FYI - you are in England where the intensity of the light is quite different than in the southern US (I'm in Florida). These crotons are EVERYWHERE here and our local nursery has given us some invaluable information about them. While they should get light daily, in bright/hot sun, these plants actually don't do as well in terms of not producing such high intensity of colors than if the plants received partial sun or are place in a bright but shady spot. Your plant is completely normal in producing green leaves at the top. They will eventually turn to the more vibrant colors as they grow. You can also prune these to make them more bushier. As new leaves start to form at the very top, pinch them off. It causes the leaves below to grow bigger and sprout out in more areas than just the top, giving the plant a fuller look. :-)
I've just pinched the top of mine, only very tiny leaves though. I have a long stem also with lots of little flower buds that knock off really easily. Should I chop that off?
I too am in Florida (north central) we had an unusually bad frost and all the leaves browned. Should I remove just the leaves or cut them? They're young, only 18-20 inches tall. Thank you 😊
I have three crotons and they're all so unique. Petra loves the direct morning sun exposure and is thirsty all the time, I have to water it every two days even now in the middle of October. If it gets too much direct sun, the three green leaves at the top will droop a little, then come back up in the afternoon (east-facing window). The Banana Croton is fairly non reactive, the only issue I've had with it is that it absorbs the water very slowly and the soil can stay wet for too long. Same thing happened recently with the Gold Dust. I decided to change the soil thinking it was going to develop root rot and now the leaves are drooping like crazy. Definitely does not like being disturbed.
In my home country, we'd just leave them outside all year and they'd be FINE. I got my own croton now after I moved to a temperate country -_- I've had it 2 days and it's already being a diva. Bright light, but can't be against a window. Moist but we'll draining soil. This is a lot.
Thanks so much! I thought I was killing my plant. I bought it in Indianapolis and brought it home to Chicago. It started dropping leaves left and right. I get it now.
Transplanted a croton & leaves are drooping. Now I know why. Omg just watered & misted 10 minutes ago. Leaves are already not as droopy! Surprising how it tells you when it's thirsty too cool. Thank u so much😁💚
I got one of these yesterday from the clearance section of a nursery for 4$ not even knowing what the name of it was. I didn’t know they were so delicate and meticulous but it’s still a very beautiful plant.
Croton is my childhood plant. I remember picking its leaves and making "barbecue" out of them and playing with my friends. And nope, we never tried eating it😆 I found it here in Europe so it made me very excited. And that excitement turned to regret like in a snap😂😂😂
I got a couple crotons about 4 years and last October we built a greenhouse for them. They get huge! Beautiful plant that loves water! I put them on the porch this spring and some of the color faded due to not enough light. So now I’m pulling them out for a few hours of light.. Just wanted people to know how big they can get 😍
I’ve had mine for about 4 months and it’s really not bushy at all so I repotted it to a larger pot and placed it in a place with lots of direct sunlight to see if there’s growth!
No joke, I was about to throw my Croton Petra away before I saw this video. I was at my wits end with this plant. Thanks for sharing this. I finally understand what the drooping was all about.
I'm so glad I found you, I follow lots of plant people but hardly any of them are based in London, or even England and climate makes such a massive difference. I've just bought this plant and really appreciate your guide. Thank you ❤️
I got one today as my first plant because i really liked how it looks. I hope the leaves won't fall off due to shock I'd be so sad. I'm a bit worried about the direct light requirement as my room does not really get a direct sunlight but it is still bright. Thank you for your video
These plants seem to be climate sensitive. Here in North Florida, the leaves will turn a bright yellow if exposed to direct summer sun. They are also very thirsty, must water at least every two days in this climate. I have them potted in the front of my house, but they have to be moved to keep the sun from damaging them. They seem to love the extreme humidity here as long as they are out of the sun.

I received one of these as a gift. It has dropped all but 6 leaves. Yikes! Thanks for the knowledge & advice. I am hanging in there and hoping for better days for this ( formerly) beautiful plant!
Try a grow bulb in a lamp or a grow light strip for plants , both are super cheap and work well for me for my plants I have in my basement rec room with small windows , I have them set on a smart timer and the plants seem happy.
Super video. Just bought one of these in Coscos . Doesn’t seem to be very colourful but it’s going to be a work in progress! Thanks for all the tips. You’re amazing and make it so interesting thanks
My leaves were falling off because i has it on my island but i just moved it outside But i live in Texas so i May give it direct sunlight for four hours and then move it into the shade

New croton mama here. Your video is extremely informative 😊 but I am looking for help pruning to create a bushy plant. He now has bare legs sticking up and I’d like to cut them back in hope of them getting bushy.

Just bought a gold dust, but the only place it can get good sunlight is on my windowsill, the leaves don’t touch the window. Do you think it will be okay or should I move it further away?
I have seen this as tiny cuttings, so many times, so I decided to bring it home. Now I think it might not be the best plant for me. But I guess my little cutting, will let me know.. 😉
Just got one as a rescue. Someone was about to toss it. It literally is a 2.5 foot tall stick with 5 leaves on it 😭 the poor thing. Put a grow light on it and letting it recover. Hoping to see new leaves!!

It's totally normal for crotons to drop leaves after a big move (like being brought home from the shop). It is a big shock to their system. As long as it's getting adequate light in its original location I wouldn't worry too much.
@@GoodGrowing Thank you for your respond. Hopefully I will learn from people like yourself on line and will stop killing these beautiful works of God. Feels bad when they not happy with me.😥🙋♀️❤

Hello hello please can you tell me why I have the leaves dry at the end trying to cut them off from trim them a little bit today I still see some dryness on the leaves and I have it in the east window but not too much sun and it’s only in the morning So why the leaves it was doing good in the same spot every day I seen the leaves not the new leaves it dry the bottom leaves from the tip let me know please and thank you
Dry leaves is usually a sign of too low humidity. Do you know the humidity of the spot it’s in? At the same time, older leaves will die off eventually so a bit of drying around the bottom isn’t really an issues. I’d only be really worried if the new growth or newer leaves were having issues
So the whole "Joseph's Coat" thing comes from a Bible story in which Joseph's father had gifted him with a very beautiful and colorful coat that all his brothers were hating on and eventually was essentially the last straw before they decided to throw him in a snake pit and leave him for dead. Wonderful story.
Good to know, thanks for sharing.. however I’m against all religion so I’m just calling it Croton from now on.. Religion in Iran.. where I’m from is used to beat you over the head, incarcerate you, and are super mean to women. All in the name of religion.. sorry for the downer.. love your plants!
Yes. I always keep my plants like this to ensure the best drainage. I know some people like to plant directly into decorative pots with drainage but I find that messier as you need to have trays for them all
Mine looks almost nothing like that! Mine is the small green leaves with red spots on it similar to the colors on yours but thinner and tiny leaves.. would the care be similar?
I liked the way you explained it but I know all about this plant but I don't know why my corton isn't doing well. Dull color not growing properly . Maybe it wants to repot. I have added manure, dried leaves and I add NPK every a month. What do you recommend me? What should I do?
@@abhirajsharmagardening7469 Hmm it may want more direct sunlight than that. I try to give mine like 4-5 hours if possible, especially afternoon light as it is a bit stronger. Hmmm... this one's pot is probably about 6 inches and the plant is about 1.5 ft above the pot.
@@GoodGrowing I live in India. The state where I live has a dry condition not humid as all say corton loves humid atmosphere 😔so I'm afraid to give it more sunlight. I think what will happen when I come from my job if I forget it in sun. I have observed that its leaves get down if sun falls on it for a long time. . terrible 😭
@@abhirajsharmagardening7469 Could you boost it's humidity by misting it or leaving it on a pebble tray, or even getting a small humidifier? It's also possible it's leaves droop after being in the sun for a long time because it's drying out faster. It may just need more water
I put it outside on autumn, this thing went droopy on me all the times and is been raining and sunny all the times. I don’t get it what croton is requesting.
Mine is losing a lot of leaves. They stay really straight up, but start to dry out a hit and get crunchy and then the leaf falls. I mist them 1-2 times a week. Please help, I don't want it to die.
@@GoodGrowing Its not a new plant I've had it for around 10 months now and kept it in one place.I had 3 new leaves but one fell off and the other two sadly stopped growing.
@@GoodGrowing Its getting sunlight 4-6 hours a day. Its winter where i live so i water it every week and a half or 2 weeks because the leaves dont drop. Already lost all my new leaves and there are no pests. Also i cut ne leaf and put it in water to try and maybe save it and start a new plant.
@@Eryy7706 hmm strange! I really only water mine when the leaves droop and I think that's probably every 2 or maybe more weeks. It may be worth getting a moisture metre and using that to see if the soil is dry.
I should send you pictures of mine. There are only like 5 leaves left. It hates me and everything I do 😂. I moved it up to our sunniest and warmest room in the house, still not happy. I have a humidifier going constantly, still not happy. I give up 😩

Thank you so much!!!
Always glad to help :)
I love crotons...💋💓
When it is time to repot, what kind of pot will you put it in? Is another plastic pot inside of planter best?
Yes. I always keep my plants like this to ensure the best drainage. I know some people like to plant directly into decorative pots with drainage but I find that messier as you need to have trays for them all
If I don’t have a gold leave what kind of realize that I should but thank you
it depends on what is available where you live but I suggest a houseplant focused fertiliser rather than an all purpose one
I got 4 diffrent ones and panicked after seeing the 5 leaves fall off in one a day... Thank you for easing my mind.
No problem! Yeah they can be total drama queens!
I have a gold croton and the leaves are either drying out or falling and I don't know what to do. I water it and mist it but it still keeps happening
Have you recently moved it to a new location? They really hate moving and can sometimes drop all their leaves!
Mine looks almost nothing like that! Mine is the small green leaves with red spots on it similar to the colors on yours but thinner and tiny leaves.. would the care be similar?
There's loads of different types of croton but the care is pretty similar for all types yeah! :)
Just picked one up at the local Kroger...
Wish me Luck🤞🏿🤞🏾🤞🏽🤞
Ooh fantastic! Good luck :)
I liked the way you explained it but I know all about this plant but I don't know why my corton isn't doing well. Dull color not growing properly .
Maybe it wants to repot.
I have added manure, dried leaves and I add NPK every a month.
What do you recommend me? What should I do?
Yeah it may need a repot. Is it getting enough sun during the day?
@@GoodGrowing yes I have kept my plant near a window it gets early sunlight almost 2-3 hours. I think my pot is small it is almost 10 inches
Does *don't move these" mean like not at all? There in front of my window and I move it always when I open them... Please help :(
I think it's more so that they don't like being relocated. I don't think moving them quickly to open the window should be a problem
Can i put them outside and put them back in if it get too cold?
I put it outside on autumn, this thing went droopy on me all the times and is been raining and sunny all the times. I don’t get it what croton is requesting.
The droopiness could have been stress from the move outside
Can croton go n self watering pots
Mine is losing a lot of leaves. They stay really straight up, but start to dry out a hit and get crunchy and then the leaf falls. I mist them 1-2 times a week. Please help, I don't want it to die.
Is it a newer plant? Or have you moved it recently? Big changes like this shock the plant into losing leaves
@@GoodGrowing Its not a new plant I've had it for around 10 months now and kept it in one place.I had 3 new leaves but one fell off and the other two sadly stopped growing.
@@Eryy7706 Oh no! Is it getting much sunlight? Have you checked for pests? What's your watering schedule like?
I give up 😩
It may be happy because you keep moving it. They reallllllly don't like change unfortunately.
Just recently purchased 3: Thanks I purchased 2 Petra's and 1 Mammy
Ooh so exciting! 3 of the same variety or a mix?
@@GoodGrowing : 2 Petra and 1 Mammy croton
