  • In this video I review MEIOU & Taxes. I discuss the main features, how they change the EU4's atmosphere, and how I think they make the game better and worse.

      I find this critique (quite usual among this and other communities) unfair. The fact that a mod is free is precisely what allow modders to do certain things, some good and some bad. First of all, they can target a very specific (and small) audience, since they don't need to cover a determined investment. What I mean is a company always wants to appeal to the largest audience possible (and NEEDS to appeal to a large enough one), so they won't include many features that will only appeal to, like I said, a very specific demographic. Considering EU4 has sold a few million copies, the % of players who regularly plays MEIOU is EXTREMELY small. A profesional studio can't afford working on a game for years only to sell it to a few thousand people at the very best. Not this game anyway. And that's considering every MEIOU player would pay for such a game.
      Second, players don't have a right to make MEIOU accountable for certain flaws, design mistakes or, especially, poor performance, since it's a free product. So modders have a large degree of creative freedom that a company hasn't. Could you imagine what would happen if EU4 vanilla performed like MEIOU does? There would be tons of refunds and rant posts on the forum, and for a reason. On top of that, a lot of people with low end pc's simply couldn't play the game. And modders don't need to worry about whether their mod is more or less popular, and don't need to worry about whether some players like or don't like the latest update or any new feature.
      So in conclusion, yeah, good mods add many cool features that hardcore players love and that's great. But companies (in this case Pdx) don't do it not because they can't or don't know how, but because that's not their goal and because they are restricted by the financial constraints large economic investments force them into.

      So you're saying is Paradox is unable of making a good game, because they need to milk cash from redditors who are unable to play a complex game. And games like Kerbal, Factorio, various complex simulations, even fighting games, shouldn't exist because they make little money from a small crowd.
      What you're really doing is simping for paradox, a publishing company that moves hundreds of millions of dollars yearly and shits on the same players who made them into a giant. Grow the fuck up.

      I'd say about 70% if Vic 3 comes out within 4 years,
      50% if 4-6 years
      30% if 6-10 years
      0% if 10+ years.
      If it isn't there initially, they'll release it in DLC, as they would for Crisis - again!

    The increased crashing may have come as the result of dispatching runners. I've heard that due to the way coring is handled by the game, dispatching runners adds files to the game and doing it too often ends up causing instablility in the game and causing it to start chugging along.

    11:30 Wait, Total War is more abstract than Civ V? I strongly disagree. Total War uses units from that time period, on maps from that time period, with general strategies. It's not perfect, but it does what it can within the confines of its processors. Civ V, meanwhile, is a hex-based, turn-based board game. Very different, and much more abstract.

      Yep, I agree with everything you said. Especially the expansion and CB problem. The first nation I tried to play as was also the Ottomans and I didn't feel a lot of Incentive to play after establishing the empire in it's historical zenith. They really should give up on the railroading. If not for that (and buggy/unfinished colonization) it would've been the perfect mod. I can't wait until it comes out fully.
      Also, if you're going to make a M&T series, I'm definitely watching it Aldra. When the mod's out and colonization is fully implemented I'm doing a Dutch campaign to avenge what happened to you in your latest EU4 MP series :D
      Now excuse me while I return to my M&T Naples campaign. I wonder how the mod will punish me for having 3 vassals and 3 junior PU partners (one of them being England).

    • @nanaya7e433
      @nanaya7e433 Před 7 lety

      Well, I can say that playing as Naples is pretty enjoyable. It starts in a pretty strong position (for its region), but it's not as easy to blob out because of Italian powers balance mechanic (basically your ae acquisition gets bigger the stronger you are in Italy). It's more of a start for playing tall which is what I'm doing. Also, what wasn't mentioned in the video is how reformation is handled differently (which I read about in the forums). I don't remember how exactly it works (I didn't get to it yet), but basically the further away you are from Rome or the more you or your provinces suffered from the hand of the church (or the Papal State), the easier it is to go protestant and apparently after a certain period it's set in stone whether you remain catholic or not (and your subjects prefer to choose the opposite of you).

  • @theWebWizrd
    @theWebWizrd Před 7 lety +10

    Extremely well done; top quality content as always.
    What happens with colonization is essentially that it's just flat out broken (in a bad way) because of the way population is handled. Essentially, provinces unconolized at the beginning of the game can't be assigned population values or fertility (what makes you grow), so they all default to the same low value and are more or less useless - that's what I heard anyways.
    The North American natives are removed because apparently when they migrate, they cause a division by 0 error that the team hasn't been able to get around.
    I've had a fun time in this mod, but as someone who plays more for mechanics and conquest this got a little stale. I am very much not fond of the inability you have to change your rural pop cap, as it really ruins the "going tall" part for me. Also, it feels really bad from a player perspective to have huge plague waves that utterly devestate your best provinces quite often and there is nothing you can do to save them, since plague measures only works for spreading it from the big orban senters.
    Modifiers also feel really unimportant and insignificant compared to vanilla, which feels boring and bad. Getting -20 construction cost from an event should with good design make you go "Oh! That's so cool, I want to invest into this province now and take avantage of this!" - then you realize the modifier went from +250% cost to +230% cost, and you feel like the entire thing was just a waste of time. Same with many other modifiers too, like discipline, production efficiency, tax income, manpower... although construction cost is a big one.
    I really love the way autonomy and institutions work in the mod though - I really wish that together with a more interactive population mechanic could make it into vanilla. Also, bigger map with more provinces is total awesome.

  • @stavenid
    @stavenid Před 7 lety +8

    i used to love playing tall when i started playing eu4, mostly because i didnt understand province value, (this was long before development) now im a blobber like everyone else, but i thought playing MT would bring back my love for playing tall, it really didn't. Yes playing tall is very viable, but again only for some countries. Money not mana is the real bottleneck in MT and if you want it raiding other countries is the only real fast way to get it, that means playing as novgorod or scotland and going tall involves countless wars against your neighboors only for burning stuff down and using their money on your own provinces, but: if you burn down their workshops in london, you only get maybe 1/10 of that value, since money cost scale with how many buildings a province has, and that workshop produced much more in london than it ever will in scotland, this means its always more profitable for you to conqer london than to build workshops somewhere in scotland, this, and the changes to trade nodes and steering ways wich punishes every country not in and end node (steering ways have been more than halved) means going tall as an historic nation with little population startdate or in a bad trade node will probably take you 500 years and your returns will be very negiable, The real problem here is railroading, where only countries that went tall and started colonising early are countrys worth playing tall as, forget playing tall as Scandinavia, forget colonizing as india, mali, inca or malaysa, tall is only worth it if you start tall,

      Chief Gironca well baltic end node would be weird, either cutting off rest of europe from russian trade or giving baltic all of western europe trade, seems kinda overpowered, but i guess endnodes always gonna fell abit unjust, well they've added alot pf nodes, so england is its own node, going to netherland endnode, and hansa is its own node, and denmark gets no part of it, instead beloning to the North see node that also dont get anything from north america or canada, prussia is its own node, and novgorod and moskva are two seperate,

    • @stavenid
      @stavenid Před 7 lety

      i like more nodes ofcourse, but because most of them only steer to one or two other places it makes it a lot harder to profit from trade steering if your not in the right places and you kinda have to conquer for that, trade steering has also been nerfed in its own power making trade republics even more useless

    The problem of ending up having no real opponent happens in vanilla EU4 as well

    • @1ProAssassin
      @1ProAssassin Před 7 lety +15

      Yeah he mentions that in the video except in the mod not only do you have no real opponents you have to kill them over and over and over again just to finally conquer them. Main reason y i get bored of invading russia, or the ming, or PLC, or the Ottomans when i'm stronger than them. This runs parallel to the fact that you can blob like crazy due to the current casus beli system, which also means u get to the point where you are stronger than everyone around you much faster anyways and cannot quite expand towards stronger opponents. The mod is fun but it ends up becoming a bigger grind than a normal eu4 world conquest. I also personally don't like too much historical railroading. I could get over it if it ran faster than the normal eu4 but that would obviously be impossible.

    • @rambard5599
      @rambard5599 Před 6 lety +6

      In EU4 you end up getting coalitions though, which play the part of the "real opponent" that you miss due to being huge. And if you're skilled enough to avoid coalitions altogether, you probably are skilled enough to not even have real opponents at any point in the game to begin with.

    • @bobby8012
      @bobby8012 Před 6 lety

      +Rambard What are you trying to say?

    • @rambard5599
      @rambard5599 Před 6 lety +4

      Bobby I'm trying to say that in vanilla EU4 you usually always have real opponents even in the form of coalitions, and players who are smart enough to avoid coalitions are probably smart enough to beat any opponent with relative ease.

  • @christopherjohnson1873
    @christopherjohnson1873 Před 7 lety +10

    Another note: the other DLC you probably want to get for this is Common Sense, because of the province interaction button that won't be there without it.
    I tried to play this DLCless, but couldn't get far enough to do anything because my computer sucks, but I think you have to build a building and wait a few days to bring up the interaction event without Common Sense, which isn't ideal.

    • @liberphilosophus7481
      @liberphilosophus7481 Před 7 lety +1

      Don't encourage DLC like common sense. It's completely inappropriate to release a DLC that changes the game to an extent that it's unplayable if you don't have it.

    • @stevenbishop8850
      @stevenbishop8850 Před 7 lety

      CS is just a greed enabler, built to reduce real-life complaints for monarch points. Certainly not "unplayable" without.

    • @liberphilosophus7481
      @liberphilosophus7481 Před 7 lety

      The AI has access to all DLC features. They can develop provinces while you cannot. It basically forces the player to play on patch 11.3 if he/she wants a fair, playable, game.

    • @christopherjohnson1873
      @christopherjohnson1873 Před 7 lety

      Liber Philosophus Can you cite something as evidence of that claim?

    • @liberphilosophus7481
      @liberphilosophus7481 Před 7 lety

      Me playing the game? Regardless, as a modder, most DLC features are in the commons folder, meaning they are in the base game. Meaning the AI has them. But, DLC specifically *Locks* features from the player. The only exception I can think of this is the recent "vassal" system for China, which is removed at the start of the game. If you read the common sense reviews, then other players make similar claims about ai getting the features but the player doesn't.
      In CKII, if you take over a republican nation without the required DLC, then the game says "you don't have the required DLC, the game will now exit."
      In Vicky II it is also unplayable without DLC, as without DLC you cannot fabricate casus beli. Meaning, you ever take land, you're going to immediately and always eat 10-20 badboy.
      In HOI3, it is partially unplayable without DLC. Without DLC, you cannot set theatres. This means you must micromanage every single little action by your army, including moving your troops to the from line and advancing troops.
      Luckily, in HOI4 you don't need DLC for it to playable... but that might change in future, as it is a relatively new game.

    I posted a thread in the paradox forums that both reman and gigau replied to about how M&T was an encouraging attempt to reduce abstractions from the history in eu4, and make it inherit the mechanics of ck2 better, where estates and dynasties controlled everything, rather than everything being centralized suddenly in 1444. I think we agreed that m&t is probably the best anyone's gonna get to balance history and gameplay until eu5, but I have to agree with how obtrusive the expansion mechanics have been designed. I tried 1.99 a bit but I'll wait until actual 2.0 to really put it through its paces.

However, it should be said that tweaking and touching on all the little nobs and bits that run your country (ie. the micromanagement) is made extremely fun by the mod, seeing little percentages and numbers going up gives a sense of progression, buildup and improvement that i think i've yet to see in any other game.

    Few things should be removed or changed. Timber is kinda weird and out of place. Runners are broken apparently and can ruin or slow your game. The AI sucks if you siege them into debt. I think it needs mapmodes to see more things ie road levels. But its in beta so who knows.
    Edit: I do like the idea tree and pops a lot. And that monarch points arent as hard to stockpile so going ahead of tech isnt hard. although its not hard to get ahead of the AI and stomp them.
