    I can't wait to see your full review videos, particularly for the standard iPhone 15. It seems to me it is bringing a lot of "pro" camera features without the "pro" complexity. Producing 24 mega pixel photos standard (on a 48 mp sensor) and automagically capturing depth info to be applied later may be huge.

  • @EggTamago7
    @EggTamago7 Před 9 měsíci +38

    While I realize that all the focal lengths aren’t “real” - they’re cropped… I appreciate that they’re there. And they’re labelled in mm rather than “x” on the Pro models. I love shooting in 35mm, and having that just there to quickly select is convenient.
    I’d mainly like to see how the processing has changed - if the heif files aren’t as oversharpened this time around.
    I’m sticking with my 13 Pro Max for at least another year, but that’s been my main annoyance with it. If I shoot in ProRaw, I have reasonably detailed files that I can minimally sharpen to my liking. If I don’t, I’m left with too-aggressive sharpening baked into the file if lighting isn’t optimal.

    • @pressrepeat2000
      @pressrepeat2000 Před 9 měsíci +4

      I’m confused about how this work on the phone. Different focal lengths is not just cropping, the lens actually distorts the light and faces looks very different at different focal lengths. Are we going to get the same effects here, or is this just cropping?

    • @tomburke5311
      @tomburke5311 Před 9 měsíci +5

      @@pressrepeat2000 If you're in the same location and pointing your camera at the same scene, then zooming is (kind of) like cropping, except that you keep the full resolution. But the perspective remain the same, in that situation. It's only if you move closer that the perspective changes.

    • @thebrenizers
      @thebrenizers Před 9 měsíci +5

      thank you@@tomburke5311 we need to end that misconception. if you use a wider focal length, someone's face gets distorted when (and only when) you step closer to recompose. the main difference between zooming and cropping is that you aren't generally altering the effective f-stop in terms of depth-of-field. The difference between a 2x crop and 2x teleconverter is even more subtle and arcane.

    • @walrusgumboot
      @walrusgumboot Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@pressrepeat2000as Tom says, that’s not correct. It’s only when you move your position/perspective that the compression effect kicks in.
      I think it’s being a little picky Tyler complaining about Apple calling out 7 different focal lengths. There are real camera brands that do this, for e.g Leica Q3. Plus lots of smaller sensor cameras state their focal length in 35mm terms (when it is really a crop relative to a FF).

    • @pressrepeat2000
      @pressrepeat2000 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@walrusgumboot This is very useful. What do you all think about the fact that we now only get a 12mm, 24mm and 120mm equivalent lenses? I like shooting at 50mm, especially portraits, and this seems to now mean that I can only get a cropped, very low resolution picture. At least on the 14 Pro we got 77mm equivalent. But I would have loved a fourth 2x 48mm/50mm lens on there. I think the 8 plus, XS and 11 Pro were the last ones to have that.

    I’ve noticed the metering is highly dependent on digital zoom, so it’s not “exactly” the same as cropping. I much prefer the 35 and 50mm focal lengths, so setting one of those as default, and getting the correct metering, will be very helpful.

    A better solution to the lack of a real variable zoom would have been to keep the 3x telephoto lens but put another 48 megapixel sensor behind it. The Spatial Video on iPhone 15 Pro was a nice surprise announcement; glad we didn't have to wait for Vision Pro to be available and then the following iPhone that has the capability to come out. Agree, it'll be interesting to see how it works with lenses close to one another given that the AVP has so many cameras. Let's see this magic happen! The LIDAR sensor is surely part of what will make the Spatial video work with such close-together cameras. I do WISH they'd spread those cameras out just a little more, but maybe with a little algorithmic magic it'll pull it off really well. @Ryan256 Před 8 měsíci +2

      There’s no doubt that having a greater distance between the lenses would give a more 3D look, but I’m guessing Apple can still make it look pretty good because the lenses are different focal lengths. That said, I hope the 16 Pro Max has a fourth lens on the opposite corner to make the 3D effect even better.

    The 120mm pro max lens is cool… but considering you have to spend $200 more, carry a larger phone, and jump from a 24mm to a 120mm… I think the 85mm of the pro (non max) is the go to in most scenarios.
    I’d much rather have my “7 lenses” be macro-85mm than have a large gap from 52mm to 120, especially with the 52mm being a sensor cropped 24mm. You kind of lose a standard portrait lens focal length.

    That portrait mode was meant, that iPhone will recognize that you are taking pictures of people, and automatically it is going to include depth map with the photo, so that you can later decide to change that photo into a portrait photo. When they mentioned pets, they meant the same thing. It will understand you are taking picture of pet and it will automatically embed depth map, so that you can later turn that photo into portrait image.
    Its also convenient for apple because it means your photos will get larger (because they are now going to save not only bigger 24 megapixel images but will also include depth map automatically) which means you will need more iCloud storage. How convenient for them. haha

    Since i am a bit late iPhone 15 Pro Max owner (i am always hesitant with new devices) i will add my personal thoughts about these cameras. A short background first: i am a hobbyist photographer for the last decade. I started with DSLR's (a Canon 7D was my first, then i went to full frame 5D mk III until a changed to a Sony system with an a7II and the a6000 (APSC). For various reasons i sold all the FF stuff and now i am using only my lovely a6000 and a triplet of primes, all of them MF vintage lenses, a 35mm (equivalent), a 50mm and a 135mm (hold that for later). I am shooting exclusively during weekends or vacations, 90% of the time cityscapes and 10% landscapes and mostly during blue/golden hour (i like the afternoon sun only for monochrome shots). Now lets talk about the 15 Pro Max... i was always skeptical about phone cameras because of their limited raw capabilities and their weak lenses but this time there are numerous things that, all together, makes these cameras capable of more serious (than the past) photographic work. 1) Apple, for the first time, uses the term "lenses" and actual focal lengths rather than the traditional x zoom levels. As i said above, my usual routine is to change between three lenses and i even missing the very useful (for architecture) 24 and 28mm. The iPhone now provide me every possible focal length i need for my shots and with the best possible resolution, not just by traditional crop. 2) there's something this year with the overall rendering of the photos that satisfy me a lot. For example, i am shooting only raw with my camera and edit every single image on Lightroom Classic. I am not overedit my images, i prefer natural looking tones and a little muted colors but with strong contrast. Guess what! Using the Rich Contrast preset on the iPhone i have the look i would have edit for 8/10 times! I don't talking about image quality (still at 100% zoom my a6000 wins by a big margin, but i don't care that much for it). I am so impressed though by the SooC photos from iPhone that i don't even need to make any edit at all (except for the vignette that i like to add for artistic purposes). And 3) lastly, i decided to make a risky move. I have the habit to print one photo every single month for my personal collection on fine art paper at A3 size. The 40euros (shipping included) for that one photo makes me very picky about what i am printing and this time i tried to print a photo shot on my 15 Pro Max a few days after i bought it. It was shot with the main camera at 24mm, JPEG (not raw) and with minimal edits in the default iPhone editor... The result print of that 24mp file was impressively nice! I thing that this time around, though its not that realistic to say about a mirrorless replacement, the iPhone can definitely be a trustee camera companion (or even a complementary camera?) for non professional photographers.

    Should I upgrade from the 14 Pro to the 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max? Currently, I have the iPhone 14 Pro Space Black 256GB which has scrolling stuttering, battery life is bad, and it has lags in games and overheating issues. So for that reason I'm interested in getting the 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. I'm still not sure which model to get in your opinion if battery and camera is important for me and I used a 12PM size before the 14P that I currently have. If you could choose in my situation, would you go for the 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max this year coming from a 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro and a 14 Pro?
    And, is 256Gb enough? If I'm only using the regular 12MP photos and 4K 60fps regular videos most of the time, and sometimes only when I need to I shoot a 48MP on pro raw.
    And as for the colors, I wonder if the Natural Titanium color will look good on cases compared to the White Titanium color. But other than that, I prefer the Natural over the White one. Would you still go for the Natural Titanium?

    The reason why 15 has USB2, is because it still has last years SOC, the USB controller is built in to this so you can't upgrade it without putting in the new SOC A17, since they chose not to, the shape of the plug can change to C, but the bridge is still whatever lightning had.

    I agree their terminology re telephoto is very misleading sometimes even using "optical" incorrectly. They are using a fair amount of digital zoom and, I assume, interpolation/computational photography. Simply cropping in to an equivalent focal length doesn't create the same image as a lens of the actual focal length. My guess is it's just a fancy crop and relative sizes of foreground and background objects will not change.

    The reason the iPhone 15 is only USB 2.0 is because it's using the A16 Bionic chip, which already existed before the migration to the new port and already has a USB controller onboard which is USB 2.0. - There were a lot of rumors about moving to USB C equating to also being USB 3.0, but USB 2.0 over USB C is rather common and I'm not sure why people made those assumptions. But I am thrilled that the Pro/Pro Max gets 3.0 since it's a new chip and includes a new controller, though I would have preferred USB 4.
    As for cameras though, this is an incredible year for the iPhone all around TBH! The main lineup hasn't gotten a significant jump like this as you said, especially since they'll be doing the binning and "photonic" processing down to 24MP images instead of 12MP. Hoping the quality is where we need it to be!
    Also, just to add some extra details on the "focal lengths" thing... For 1.2x and 1.5x, they both output binned 24MP images the way the 1x mode does, binned and processed through their pipeline. So it's not just a crop in the sense that the main 1x 24MP output wouldn't generally be called a crop so much as a binned output. The 2x, however, does crop in from there, resulting in 12MP output.
