Good video, 2000 Tundra TRD Ltd 4 x 4 with tow package since new and had many of the same (not so bad) issues - tailgate handle broke off, ball joint (replaced by dealer at 42K miles), sway bar ties, all of the oxygen sensors multiple times (first 4 replaced by dealer under warranty, learned how to do it myself after paying $270 apiece for the next few), replaced the faded headlights. Knock wood not the rusty frame or transmission issues. (Always tow with OD off.). Overall, still burns no oil and has never failed to start or let me down. She's a keeper.

I just purchassed an '03 2UEZ V8 w/159K miles and asap I'll RnR the timing belt and H2O pump as I haven't knowledge of when it was last performed. My mechanic said to me it had to have been done once already as the original would not have gone 159K miles without being replaced. What say you? Also my rack and pinion shows oil leaked(s) on its right end, have you experienced and rack failures?
This Tundra has been in the southwest, New Mexico/Arizona its entire life and shows no rust issues. But the clear coat on the sides of the body is fine but elsewhere it baked off. Have you noticed problems with the brakes as this was noted in the review that the Tundra eats up brakes? I suppose towing usage is part and parcel of what may be a cause of this though. One more thing and then I'll relent. Lower ball joints, any issues?

I have owned 5, 1 access cab and 4 double cabs, they are hands down my favorite truck I have ever owned, I have owned all of the Big 3 in various configurations, including built diesels and a Raptor (V-8) and though I love my Raptor it is only because I needed the extra interior room for a growing family and 2 large dogs. The FGT fits a sweet spot in truck size bigger than the Tacoma and smaller than a traditional fullsize. The biggest downside, turning radius and lower ball joints, you get used to the turning radius and as long as you are proactive in maintenance (use only OEM LBJ's) I miss my Tundras a lot!!!

Here's what you need to look for with these trucks. I drove a 2005 dbl cab 4.7 for over 6 years loved the truck. The biggest issue I had was the brakes. Keep in mind I had larger wheels and tires on mine which doesn't help but it's a known fact these trucks eat pads and rotors. Keep an eye on them and be sure to have the drums serviced and do not purchase PowerStop brakes for these trucks, that company makes low quality parts and I highly recommend going oem or opting to run larger rotors for these trucks if you can. I experienced three issues with the truck while I owned it, column shift cable went slack and had lots of play in it (fixed), Trans mount broke and made a popping sound (fixed) and a u-joint cracked and was making a howling sound (fixed) all under warranty. Nothing ever required service with the engine/trans or rear end. Tailgate handle did break and was replaced (takes 5 minutes to swap). Also the gas cap rotted from the Florida heat when the truck was about 12 years old and this will throw a check engine so keep that in mind, AA has caps for about $10-15 and fixed. A/C blew ice cold at 14 years old. Also keep an eye on the front end with ball joints and bushings, if they look worn or show signs when driving have them replaced with oem Toyota components. If you're in the market for leveling one of these trucks I'd recommend bilstein 5100 shocks and level it that way rather than a strut spacer, and run the 5100s in the rear. Never had an issue with an 02 sensor or anything with the steering even with 33s on mine it drove straight and as smooth as it did stock. Highly recommend these 1st gens if you can find one i'd definitely consider it over a similar year domestic.

I bought my 05 TRD brand new. Has 175k now. I can easily see going past 300k on it. Best vehicle i've ever owned. Besides routine maintenance I've replaced one O2 sensor and when my rear U-joint went bad I used that as an excuse to get a one piece driveshaft to eliminate the center bearing. I do have to polish the headlights about once a year. The front ball joints were replaced under recall. There are also recalls for the airbags. I think some models were recalled for frame rust also but luckily my frame looks almost new (we get very little snow and they dont salt the roads here).
We also have a 2003 Sequoia Limited 250k miles and have had very few issues out of that also. Exhaust leak, O2 sensors, blown speakers on the JBL system, and the rear hatch handle.

I have a 2001 ltd tundra that didn't come with leather or wood but did come with runners and mudflaps. the only problem I've had with this truck was I had to replace the harmonic balancer when it was still new. other than that I have replaced two o2 sensors that were over 20 years old, restored the headlights with a kit and some of the rubber trim needs replacing. I did upgrade the sound system. I only have about 95,00 miles on it. oh and the drivers side seatbelt won't retract (last quote I got was over $400). otherwise it's been a great truck. put some custom rims on it and raised letter tires. still get lots of complements on it.

the T100 did have a pretty good size truck bed even if it had the 3400 V6, i was almost gonna get one this past summer but decided not too since it had to be towed with damaged brake lines that made it not driveable. 140k was on it and it was a stick too, kinda wish i jumped on it because the truck i ended up getting has only needed repair after repair. An 03' F150 Supercrew Lariat. Dang it, and its just been a money pit. :(

Something I never see mentioned about these trucks. Most all of them were represented as 4WD models & they are the best way to go if there is any winter driving or you have other use for the 4WD, but there was a 2WD V8 model also & it's an interesting vehicle if you are using it for some performance hauling where traction is not a problem. I have only seen one of these, but live in an area where 4WD is the most popular.

  • @jimdrums4life499
    @jimdrums4life499 Před 3 lety

Keep in mind the 1st Gens are now 20-15 years old, so it will take $ commitment to bring it back in to shape.
Bought mine 4 years ago w/ 145k miles, in 2017, had the frame replaced- and that opened Pandora's box.
    Expected repairs....
Frame (this is the main thing- as the recall will likely not be covered anymore and this is a HUGE deal- Make sure it was either done, or don't buy the truck!), Shocks/struts, brakes (calipers, pads, rotors, shoes), lower control arms & ball joints, tranny service, fuel filter, tires, 4x4 fluids changed, timing belt, minor body work around the wheels. $6000
    Unexpected repairs.... $8000
Starter (nightmare location), All 8 coil packs on the spark plugs ($1000), rear axle cover leaked (replaced and welded new one one - USE GAS WELDER), rear wheel bearings (nightmare had to be torched out), Front wheel Bearings, Fuel Tank ($1000 because there's no aftermarket or used available), Exhaust (cats back w/ O2 sensors).
    Future still needed.....
Drive axle bearings, headers, front diff gaskets. $4000
In short, I paid $6k for the 17 year old truck that had 145k miles, and I've had to put $15k so far in to the truck, and probably another $5k left.
But a $25k total truck, that will run good for another 10 + years, means this is still a good purchase.
Just don't think you're going to buy a $10k truck and it will not need any maintenance- as that's why the person was selling it!
Repairs are expensive, but worth it- if you commit to the truck and have a good (non stealership) mechanic.

Timing chain is a big deal on these trucks, definitely make sure that has been taken care of or else you will be having to spend some decent cash on that.

I'll probably keep it for another 16 years as it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. The only problems mentioned in the video that I have experienced is the Rack and Pinion started leaking earlier this year so I had that replaced. Also the brake rotors had to be replaced last year.
