  • These are the most common problems or issues that you may have when you buy a 1st gen Toyota Tundra. The First Generation Toyota Tundra is extremely reliable, but that doesn't mean it isn't prone to a few issues. The truck benefits a lot from some good preventative maintenance - make sure to check you lower ball joints, timing belt, and radiator before they fail on you!

    When those first came out I thought they and every other Toyota were the blandest lookng cars you could buy. Now I think they are timeless in their simplicity and I drive a old Toyota.

      All of these new trucks are square. The old Tundras and Tacomas have this swept in, rounded, body style.

    have 2000 tundra myself. great truck. my lower ball joints recently failed and no matter what people say. Go OEM! that’s my advice.

    Bought a used 06 in 07 for $18000 it had 16000 miles. It was the third one I tried to buy I got beat out on the first two. It now has 59,000 and outside of replacing all the suspension have done general maintenance. Get offers to buy it all the time. Was thinking of buying until neighbor bought one new 6 years ago $68,000 ! Thanks for advice great job.

    ...most informative intro to first gen troubleshooting. Thank you. I just bought a first gen. for the first time. An '03 one owner who had maintained it very well before he passed away. Truck has 150k and is very clean.. I'm looking forward to having more time to work on my favorite Toyota,..my 77 FJ40. I'm stripping the doors, dash, rear hatch..etc from a '73 and having a lot of fun. Thanks for all of the helpful info.

    Great Video man, my 2001 4x4 has had almost every problem you’ve stated haha, but I’ve kept up on the preventative maintenance. The one thing that got ahead of me is the exhaust manifold leak, it drips slightly and I definitely hear it on a cold start.

    Superb info thank you. I just bought a 06 Tundra double cab with 116k. I want to get all the preventive maintenance done asap. (LBJ, timing belt, spark plugs, battery and frame repair were done already)

    I've got the exhaust manifold crack I'm pretty sure, or something of that sort, Ticking noise on acceleration some times when it's just started up and I'm going down the road, 0-40mph usually. Don't plan to fix that issue lol. Do need to replace my carrier bearing though, Been putting that off for about a year but it still holds together so I ain't too worried. Biggest problems for me right now is a mystery scraping/grinding steel/metal noise on acceleration when kicked into OverDrive, which I believe is just 3rd gear? 2nd biggest issue is repairing my CV Boots due to adding a 2.5 inch leveling kit on the front, That is going to be a fun one.. Great video! Always look forward to 1st Gen videos!

      Haha we basically have the same truck!
      Ya not sure what the grinding noise would be, maybe also driveline/driveshaft related?
      I’ve been fortunate to have my CV axles stay intact even after the lift!

      If the frame, body, and floor of the bed are okay, don't give up on her. They definitely need to be maintained, but if you don't have rust issues, they're good for several hundred thousand miles.

      @@rickfitzgerald4426 How did it turn out? Going to look at and likely buy a 04 with a nice frame Friday. He's right if the frame is good then it's worth it to fix it. I already have a 03 tundra and it runs and drives like a new truck, shifts great amazing & it's at 280k only reason i'm going to look at this 04 tundra is because of my bad frame on my 03 if i could get it inspected with the frame repairs i've done it would drive more at least 1 -3 more years & that only because of the frame engine and body would go for 100s of thousands still. both of these have the 4.7 though not the v6.

    I’m only 30 seconds in trying to decide if I want to take on my dads old tundra. That same ball joint failure happened to him a couple years ago taking my little brother to school. He had just turned a corner and so he wasn’t going very fast but it gave right on the main road so he just floored it all the way to a side street. It was so funny afterward seeing the one tire skid mark trail from where he started to where he parked we had a good laugh about it but that is scary

    Also the 04-06 or maybe it was 05/06 have bigger stronger ball joints so it’s less of an issue. I say less but still needs to be maintained.

      Dude! I had a clip that said exactly that haha. It just barely missed the Final Cut during editing. Ultimately, I didn’t want to give people a false sense of security. I’ve seen enough double cabs with blown joints that I couldn’t personally justify giving double cab owners any kind of pass, if that makes sense.

    I've watched this video 2 times now. I've been deciding a 1st gen tundra over a tacoma. I refuse to pay the tacoma prices. Makes me wish I had kept my 3rd gen tacoma.     Got a 2000 tundra which the lbj sheared while I was going 50mph down a hill. Almost lost my tire but the tie rod held it under my truck
    When the lbj went it ripped out to ubj and my brake line
    Skidded to a stop on the control arm
    Fixed it all myself for $600 or so

    I bought a used one with 450K Miles from the original owner. It has been running great for several years - its incredible how smooth it really runs!. Just replaced the one of the lower ball joints.

      If you replace one, you should replace the other at the same time. Keep good record of the mileage and replace every 100k

    Just came across this vid out of curiosity of what potential issues CAN be for the truck and youre very helpful. However ive been lucky enough to have little to no issues w my '02 V8 access cab. So far only the ignition coils have given me an issue that and the alignment being wonky but all has since been fixed. Very solid and reliable truck. Is there any exhausts or other lighter mods youve done or recommend?

      I don’t really like aftermarket exhausts, so mines stock.
      I love having a fiberglass shell and a small sleeping setup in there, that’s about it. And a nice set of all-terrains

      I've got an '02 V6 with a stick shift and 4WD.
      Only 152,000 miles.
      Best pickup ever made.
      Apparently there weren't a lot of Acess cabs with 4WD and a stickshift made.
      Took me a year to find it in 2014

      @@208Tyler yeah I've been seeing some older that are running under $8,000. And a lot of them are saying the same parts that you said have been replaced and that's why I was researching it.

    I had to do the chassis on my 02 sequoia, I was 1 year out from the warranty. The original owner was either lazy or unaware of the recall. Found a chassis from another truck that had its chassis already replaced for 500 bucks with the lower control arms and ball joints. Got it done in 38 hours.

    Definitely have had all of these issues. LBJ was done as soon as the recall happened, carrier bearing went out and felt like rotor warping x5, accidentally dropped the radiator so that solved itself, exhaust manifold seems to tick tick tick in the winter for a few minutes, and my only check engine light ever was the O2 sensor. Another thing for 2005-2006 RWD is that it is almost guaranteed Sequioas and 4runners included that your transmission mount cross-member is no longer bolted to the mount and your transmission has nothing holding it down. Part of the TSB is that the cross-member will be cracked and you will have to weld or replace it (I live in Florida so welding was very reasonable).
    I do have one question for my fellow tundra owners, has anyone experienced and/or fixed 2k rpm surge? drives me off the chain I can't accelerate 100% smoothly at low throttle yet it PURRSSSS at every other RPM.

    Very informative video., you have a gift for explaining this stuff. I just got an 01 tundra and ive got an issue that's difficult for me to diagnose and even explain. Basically sometimes when I come to a stop and then go or even sometimes immediately when pulling out of my driveway the truck feels like it's stuck and I have to give it gas to push through. Then it's fine while driving and may or may not happen again after coming to another stop. It feels like it's being hung up on something but can't tell what. I suspected it was a seized caliper but I tried to replicate the issue while it was on a jack and couldn't. Could it be a drive train issue? I don't think it's the ebrake either because u can hear a thud/clunk noise when it happens and it sounds like it's up front. Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated thank u. It's the v8 model with extended cab.

      Could be that something in the driveshaft, like any joint or yoke, is dry, and needs grease or replacing. It can bind up when it’s idling and under tension, making a little popping noise

      My buddies truck had that same issue. It was not disclosed at dealership where he bought it used. It was a trans. problem. Bad. He had to fight but he got his money back. This was back in the day. 2005

    steering rack develops a rust hole on the right side over time. A guy on tundrasolutions forum rebuilds oem. I bought a beck-arnly replacement, works great.

    I've had all the issues you've listed and more hah. Slowly but surely I've been replacing things but one thing that started happening yesterday is, when I unlock the door and open it, the locks keep unlocking while the door is open. I think its a sensor. Have you experienced that?

    I recently had a leaking problem in the rear end, around the differential, also, pumpkin. I believe it’s caused by rust and small holes in the metal. Anyway, I sprayed it with flex seal, which I learned about by watching CZcams. And now for the last four days I have had no leaking in the rear axle around the differential. do you have any comments on the workings of the rear end and differential, and what are the corrective actions can’t be done? I have contemplated buying a rear end from a used parts dealer in Worcester Massachusetts. Nothing has happened yet though. It would be helpful if you could comment on this also.

      Well, I’m not very familiar with rust repair, but if it works it works. There are places online that sell a rear diff cover - you could cut yours out and weld on a new cover, if the cover is the issue. I believe the cover has the thinnest metal
      Obviously, if you’re buying a new rear end or rear axle, you’d want it to not be very rusty.

    I have an '01 with a replaced transmission, replaced 1 o2 sensor and just ignored the next one, I too get better mileage. I also have the exhaust leak. I just got it back from the shop replacing timing belt and expecting to replace the lower ball joints but the shop said they checked out fine. All these stories have me worried though...Is there a symptom of them failing or is it just one day they go?

      Sometimes there are LBJ symptoms, but a lot of people are surprised and caught off guard when theirs fail.

    10:30 in when you talk about the recall is that just for an edit/fix on the repair manual or the actual transmission cuz that's actually what I own an just recently my tranny kinda went out. Stopped working. Started working again all a sudden then stopped again. But when it started working again I drove about 20 mi through all the gears no problems. Then I went to leave again 2 hours later and it wouldn't work again today wouldn't engage in gear.. 🤔🧐🥺

      The actual transmission had some small problems, as well as the repair manual having the incorrect fluid capacity, is my understanding

    I've got a 1st Gen with 85k on it and for some reason appears to be having a rear main seal leaking. Didn't notice it until I started to see drops of oil in the driveway. Got under the truck to inspect it. Cleaned all the old oil residue off with black cleaner let it run for a while and right between the engine and trans is leaking from the gasket.

      Might be your valve cover gasket. The previous owner of my truck had that done.

    1st gen tundras early ones 2000- maybe 2002/03 DO NOT tow or haul anything or any amount of weight with out first turning off your overdrive. So again do not have O.D. on when ur towing or hauling at all. Some Known for weak planetary O.D. gear.

      00-02 are all identical basically, but I don’t know why you’d avoid them in general .
      They do have smaller brakes and some had a recall on part of the transmission, but they’re still super solid.

    If you are unsure while buying a First Gen Tundra with a 4.7 liter V8. Changing the timing belt. It's a belt. Safe for about a 100K miles. From a guy who bought one new in 2004. If you are buying, Ask.. When was the timing belt last serviced? I have done this twice now with my 04.

      If you buy, ask for any maintenance records. I still do some basic service at the local Toyota Dealership when needed. The whole history. In their database. Toyota of Santa Cruz or the local OilChangers . I have kept my truck completely factory/stock for 19 years.

    I have a tundra with a bad frame. Are you sure people are still eligible for a frame replacement because i thought they ended the recall a year ago.

      While I've never looked into having it done personally, I have quite recently seen testimonials about it. If Toyota has already checked out the truck previously, it will be harder for you to get them to do it. I'm not sure if it's dependent on the model year either. You will have to contact your local dealer

    U FORGOT TO MENTION THE WIRE THATAKES OVER DRIVE TURN ON OR OFF GETS LOOSE AND U WILL START HAVING IT TURN OF AND ON INTERMITTENT, U MUST REWIRE THAT WIRE TO GET A SOLID CONNECTION AND THATS THE FIX

    My 2002 V6 has no power when accelerating. I cleaned the map sensor, throttle body, changed the 02 sensor. Still wont accelerate as quick as it used to. Any ideas?

    What would cause a tick-tick-tick-tick engine noise (2005 v6)? Don't remember it making the sound before, now it seems constant. Can hear it at idle especially. I wouldn't call it a flutter really. Could it be the manifold?

      If it gets louder when you step on the gas, exhaust leak. Otherwise, I couldn’t be sure just from that description

      @@208Tyler At first I thought the sound was coming from the serpentine belt but when I pop the hood and listen while it's idling it sounds like it may be coming from the driver's side of the engine. But no it doesn't seem to get louder when I step on the gas. I really can only hear it when the truck is idling.

    Replace or upgrade, repeat. I'm sorry to say I do not have the money to do half this nor the time I agree with you to an extent however most of these issues happen on poorly maintained tundras.(im making myself feel better because I don't have the money to do all these replacements)

      Most likely the drive Shaft because that is what mine is doing, mind you I have replaced basically the whole front end of my truck. Rack and pinion and all suspension components brakes tires etc

    He yes been allover death valley and my home state nevada if 0eo0le did recall the would not have to worry about lower ball joints 05 06 never had 5hw issue 1 recall aince 06 air bag 250,000 roufh miles one xv boot and carrier bearing 0lua timing belr and plugs

    You have to change ball joints on ebery truck about the same duration. This isnt a toyota issue

      No- there is a Toyota specific issue where the failure is catastrophic, therefore more attention needs to be payed to inspection and replacement of the ball joint.

    On the first part of Tundra from 2000 to 2002 the brakes from a Tacoma 2003, they put a bigger calipers and bigger rotor cause I have a 2005 Toyota tundra double cup. I have a 13 1/2 inch router with port piston caliper

      Yup! The brakes got bigger as the generation went on. That’s a common swap on the earlier model year tundras

      Yes! You want the 13WL calipers, you will have to trim the dust shield a little bit to make them fit.
