An African American saying is "They want our rhythm, but not our blues". If you look into the origins of the majority of ballroom dances , you'll find they have their origins in Black and Romani cultures. In addition to Romani Polka, Paso Doble and Flamenco have Romani origins. Tango, Samba, Rhumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Swing, Foxtrot, Rhumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Swing, Foxtrot have origins in Black communities in the Cuba, Argentina, Brazil and the US. But once they're adopted to fit the ballroom standards of 'grace, technique, and refinement' their origins are erased. Now those dances are grouped under "Latin dances' to tie them to upper-class Europe while making them sound "tropical" enough to be intriguing. What angers me is when white dancers see these dances done the traditional way, in the communities in which they originate, and call it 'unrefined'.
I love "latin" dances, Caribbean dances, African dances, lindy hop and others, but I am also pissed off when I see them turned into mere stage show, over-refined and over-spectacular... Seeing those dances performed and/or taught in a more faithful/original way is what I consider the real honor and privilege.

I always found it baffling that people can see parts of a culture they really think are cool and then demonize the people who made it and live it. Like...that's like hating an artist who was making their art in their style but only loving their style they created when done by other people as knockoffs, rip-offs, and with a lack of any deeper meaning behind it. (Like hating a design of clothing but then loving the Shein version.) Baffling. Why hate and be cruel to people who created something you find beautiful? Personally, I didn't get educated on Romani people at all till about late high school and I had always liked what I had known as "boho", but after doing research, learning from this creator, and informed by a dear friend who knew more on the topic and so on it's been much easier and worthwhile to learn more about the various Romani peoples and the values, historical context, traditions, and culture behind their style and how they live across the world--and to appreciate their styles and culture for what they are without appropriating. (Aka, supporting Romani artists, and not making or buying things made to rip off their designs.)
This is one of the reasons why they love to ponder and philosophise over the separation of art from the artiste, for co-option of art and condemnation of the artiste.

I'm europian and the racism towards the romani isn't gone after all of these years and i had to be reminded of that in the worst moment possible.I suffer with panic/anxiety attacks and i get really pale so a woman noticed and thought i was going to pass out so when i got up from the floor to sit next to her since the seat opened up she borrowed a water bottle and tried helping by throwing cold water on me which she borrowed from a girl.I started getting better as she was constantly talking to me and as soon as i went to thank her she told me about how she experienced a heatstroke like this once(again she didn't know it was a panic attack and to be fair it resembled a heatstroke)and went on to talk about how she was so desperate for water she took a water bottle from a romani as they were the only one offering. And how i was lucky that i didn't have to do that.(she even called them the slur bc in Europe it's still not seen as "directally"offensive+our slur is different from the word gypsy)I didn't have anything left in me so i had to answer her questions for about five more minutes and turns out she knew my maths teacher bc she was A TEACHER herself.First thing i wondered after i got off the bus was what she was teaching those children at school.
The rich and privileged love apropriation actually. Lots of food, dance, music, signs of celebration and creativity at the high class are taken from the poor, struggling and marginalized that use it to enjoy what little they have. Its upsetting how this works, but hopefully beauty and fun remain as people recontextualize from history.
Your channel is so instructive. It would be super interesting if you could help us defining the boundaries between what is cultural appropriation and what isn't, specifically when it comes to Romani culture.
Because they traveled, lived in carts, and had their own beliefs outside of society, they were seen as poor, unclean, thieves, and pagan. And the superstitious belief romani have didn't help at all. And not having normal identification and education and work experiences it just made people treat them as separate. You know how it goes when your different. You aren't following the pack, and that marks you
I had a couple aunts who loved to “glamorize” our ancestry by saying we are descendants of the Romani, Sioux, and Ashkenazi. They were wealthy WASPs and wanted a little bit of excitement 🙄
Dancing polka to this particular song is actually a recent invention. The Romani Polka was choreographed by Richard Powers, a CONTEMPORARY dance master, following "long polkas" tradition: fit specific polka dance moves to a specific melody
Yes, appropriation. Take a Czech folk dance, claim it is Romani, and make everyone believe that the French stole it from Roma. Might as well claim they stole it from Madagaskar.
Not really. New dances can spread and I as a Czech can assure you that it is logical and alright that something like that had spread at first to Wienna and then to other places from there. Just because Parisians ejoyed it doesn't mean we stopped having it.
Czechs turned a lot of their dances into waltz variants during the first German occupation (not the Hitler one, the Germans have tried several times to Germanize the Czechs) so many “fancy” dances have a faster more playful Czech origin. That seems to be the Czech strategy for preserving their culture, smile and nod to the occupiers and do what you want anyway. Or prank your occupiers into doing it themselves without knowing. Then sit back and laugh as your “lowly” culture becomes their “high class” culture.
It’s giving “I can do this thing but you can’t even though you invented the thing because when I do it it’s an aesthetic but when you do it it makes me uncomfortable”
As far as I know Czechs were never banned or frowned upon because of Polka. Granted never was that much interested in the subject but I'm pretty sure that if it were so it would carry with our nation, so..
I'm from russia and here many romani are part of the bands - kids don't go to school, adults don't go at work... A lot of marriage with kids. We could end it, but russian police is the most important part of it, they have money from these band and it's not a secret from any russian.
Being pushed into that is caused by “othering” by the ethnic majorities. We’ve done it to quite a few groups here in the US, where it’s downright hypocritical since the majority is from another continent altogether and made of enough ethnic groups that we don’t have any real traditions. Quit “othering” and there is just “us”.

What does polka, a Czech folk dance, has to do with Roma? NOTHING!!!
Something like bohemian in arts and literature from Baudelaire to Rimbaud, in paintings ecc
Roll call: Slavic-Romani peeps whose ancestors are from Bohemia.
Your channel is so instructive. It would be super interesting if you could help us defining the boundaries between what is cultural appropriation and what isn't, specifically when it comes to Romani culture.
The rich love doing that. Heck, even to their own people.
In the UK, there is a huge problem with this in class structure.
May I ask why the Romani people were seen as a threat 😕? It seems a lot of our cultures get romanticizes until it doesn’t fit their narrative anymore
You aren't following the pack, and that marks you
@@elizabthharris6741 thank you for this explanation
I had a couple aunts who loved to “glamorize” our ancestry by saying we are descendants of the Romani, Sioux, and Ashkenazi. They were wealthy WASPs and wanted a little bit of excitement 🙄
Your aunts really tried to fill the minority bingo card
I love your sass
They had been appropriating the culture back then too 😭
Dancing polka to this particular song is actually a recent invention. The Romani Polka was choreographed by Richard Powers, a CONTEMPORARY dance master, following "long polkas" tradition: fit specific polka dance moves to a specific melody
@@HelgaVolya Interesting! Thank you for sharing
I didn't know romani people has their own vatiation of polka.
Thank you.
...is George Bizet's Carmen also an example of this??? I'd like to know since I'm performing in the chorus this Friday
Appropriation baby.................Yup!
❤
Euro peans have made them that way.
What are bands? Is that a gang?
@@mangopudding5979 yes the European has control over the whole world and everybody in the world on an individual level as well. Right now I am making many minorities do bad things as we speak…
The fact that this is the first time I'm hearing about Romani people😳 I've got some serious research to do
The fastest way to gain experience is to come to an Eastern European country.
@@zalanemeseYou think you slick
You hit the nail right on the head, Florian! The Romany Culture is so romanticised and even appropriated in "fashion" (🙄), yet allover the World, Romanies are seen as the lowest of the low. It makes me sick!
Possibly a dumb question, but when should I use Romany vs Romani please? Or are they interchangeable? 🥰
Use Romany when you take a dump and Romani when you take a walk.
Man such a landback moment. Makes me so mad.
An "imperial" ballroom dance? Dude, chill out.
Cultural appropriation is not a new concept. 😢
I know very little of the Romany people
So it's like Song of the South?
I think aristocrats just don't know how to be happy
Dude take a chill pill
Oh has Romany changed to end with a Y and not an I now?
So this dance was Romani? 🙄 And Romanis originated from India....😰😱 Woah, we used to do ballroom dancing? Damn
What's actually Romani? I'm guessing it's not one culture?
Romani is an ethnic group with many sub groups and sub cultures found all over the world. So yes it's indeed not only a single culture.
@jaxthewolf4572 okay thank you
The mire videos of yours I see the more I find that upper class push people down and pick theor pockets of things theu find interesting at the same time saying theu do nothing of worth. As an American I see it a lot wirh black people, aave, fashion, music just about evetuhing urban or hip hop is taken from black culture, watered down and spread through the masses as the new coll thinh everyone is doing when it started as a black thing
True gitani or as you say romans or whatever were actually maasters of theft so they adopted lot of factors to their music :D
All you do is whine whine whine, is that also a part of ramany culture? I’m Canadian from French descent. I was born with nothing but I don’t go crying all day about things the English stole from us (half of the words in our language etc) so my question, is complaining one of your traditions? Maybe breathing is your tradition? Sorry I won’t breathe anymore . But also since u guys stole the essence of the dance from the Czechs as you said then please do not call it your own. It is your own version, just as the French did .
Maybe being racist is in you? Racism has no race, anyone can be racist, like you.
They stole your language thats it ? Thats nothing compared to what romani people had go through you weren't inslaved and oppressed and discriminated by the english like romani people is still today
I have noticed that you dont like it when people have suffered more then you and tell about it. Because of morons like you most Roma e Sinti go undercover -- meaning I never mention what my ethnic background is on my workplace. One leg in western society and one leg in traditional society: my choice.
Florian mentioned clearly that the Csech polka was the mould from where the romani polka evolved. So you trying to implecate he is a liar, is kind of childish. Get over it!
The English stole half of the words from French? Dude, crack open a history book. Normandy, that spoke French, ruled England for a couple hundred of years, French was the language spoken in court and by the nobility. It was the mother tongue of English kings for like 400years! THAT, besides being geographically close and trade, is why there is so much French in English ffs 🤦🏼♀️
Yes they sto le, and you have every right to point that out otherwise people won't know the truth.
your albanian not gypsy
polka isn’t a roma thing
You clearly didn't pay attention. He said that it was a variation of the Czech polka but the song that goes with the dance is called "Romani Life".
@@YAWSSSSSS oh so they stole it from the Czechs then…
You've proved this app has improved tremendously!!! Ok by the way i am glad you speak your mind more!!! Like you always did but 👑 still. I noticed you talk with your hands more and KNOW you're right.More open.🩷 always were right&glad you know it
