Had an adopted "Uncle" that had a buckskin that he would not ride without a tiedown because the buckskin was a "head tosser". I rode him with nothing more than a rope hackamore and never had a problem with head tossing. Ended up buying the horse from him and worked with it a bit and all the bad habits disappeared. Mostly by getting the bit out of it's mouth. Horse was found dead in his stall of old age. He worked cattle with us for about 10 years with never a problem.

I've seen so many horrible things at barrel racing shows. I once watched a horse who lost its rider panic run in the arena trip over the reins dangling in front of his feet, do a front flip and slide into the back of the arena. That's the day I realized at 13 this is not ok. I'm 27 now and this is an absolute great lesson from Rick, I wish there were more people like you in the horse world. Please keep up the great work.

Hey Rick! I am a 13 year old girl, and I wanted to say thank you, you've taught me so much about horses. I'm so excited to learn more and more, and I hope someday to help teach people like you (only if I know what I'm talking about of course 😂.) I spend so much of my time sitting out in my grandmas pasture watching her three beauties be horses, they have taught me valuable lessons by only speaking with their bodies. Whenever I see them do something new, I come to your channel to see what it means, and every time I am so intrigued. Unfortunately my grandma acts like a barn witch telling me "now you don't go in there! Those horses are unpredictable! Those horses can be mean!" But in reality these horses are just being horses. But I just really wanted to say thank you for doing what do, and helping the young ones like me learn about horses, and not about how well this pink magic carrot dust works 😉 Thanks Rick! Keep on doing what you're doing.

She's now afraid to ride him without a tie down because of that🙄. Her new trainer-uses Martin games and etc.🙄-had a spare tie down. The girl asks if she can have it. She gets it. Poor horse

I knew a person that ran barrel racing with a rope halter and with a horse that she had worked with and obviously actually liked doing what it was doing. Watching them work was amazing because they were perfectly in sync. Comparing them with the other pairs in the competition made it painfully obvious that the other horses did not want to be there let alone enjoy it. I will admit that the first pair were not the fastest, didn't even place because she didn't push her to the breaking point. I did talk to her since I was curious about her using a rope halter rather than a western bridle. She said she chose to compete the way it should be done, not that the fastest is best but that the ones who work the best together to complete the goal. She did say that in a lot of competitions she was disqualified because she did not have the correct equipment(western bridle, tiedown, exc.) but that she still went to spread awareness.

i took lessons for barrels when i was young, then i took general riding lessons and learned that i knew next to nothing. i had no idea you could ride by your legs, that reins aren't necessary and your legs are for more than go fast and stay on. i only ride my horse in a halter, but she's so used to a bit and my legs and seat are not aware enough yet to give her the direction she needs, but i'm learning slowly, and we're taking it one day at a time.

I’m probably the only one that lives in Kentucky that can’t stand the Kentucky Derby for a lot of the same reasons. They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars even millions of dollars on grooming and caretaking and use that as justification of taking the best care of the horse. And it’s really total bullshit!
It’s all about money in the end. If there were not a derby or a Belmont stakes or any money derivative races I highly doubt that they would be doing all of the same things they are doing for these horses they Claim to be taking such good care of.
I’m Native American. Anything to do with money or gains from animals at the expense of the animal Is bad medicine!

Perhaps a better way would be the winner gets to take all of the proceeds to a horse rescue Or animal rescue, and donate it in the name of all the participants. But even still, you’re in the same scenario.
Just like the horse, if there’s no 🥕 Carrot ( trailer) , at the end of the race for the participant do you think the participant would do the race in the first place?

You're not the only one who holds these beliefs to be sacred. I may not be native american, but I hold the same belief system. I believe that animals were given to us as a blessing, a gift. We are meant to be there custodian. To care for them keep them safe and fulfill their needs. I believe that sporting events with or without money are an unnecessary cruelty for these animals. I feel the same way about dog shows cat shows snake shows etc. I grew up in Arizona. My parents always took us to the rodeo. I hated it. Even when I was too young to put into words why I hated it, it hurt me inside. Even when I was too young to realize there's a strap across the testicles of broncos and bulls, I HURT inside just watching. When I finally got old enough, I refused to go anymore. When I grew up and had children, I refused to take them to zoos or even the circus. I would not be a party to teaching my children that it was okay to make money off the suffering of any animal larg or small. I didn't restrict my children from going with their aunt or cousins because I believe it's important to encourage children to make their own choices. I did however explain to them in great detail and quite frankly why I would never be the one to take them to something like that. I showed them photos, grizzly photos so that they can make their own informed decision and I informed them that making the wrong decision would be paid for someday, by them

I saw a video of a gal in an indoor jumping competition that was thrown by her horse after it had knocked off several cross bars from her jerking on the bit (in my opinion). You could tell the horse knew she was going to hurt it when it jumped. What was funny is that the horse took off without her and went through the entire course jumping perfectly to the point that the crowd applauded and cheered the horse. She probably didn't learn a lesson and probably still in this stupid sport. Actually, I should say, the horse is still sentenced to a life in this stupid sport.

The adult barrel racers were riding like the little girl. Butts bouncing a foot off the saddle with every stride, legs flapping and driving spurs into the horse, and quirts slamming into the poor horses hindquarters. I just felt sick. No horsemanship, just abuse. Then there was the bronc busting. Rodeo has always been bad. I did not think it could get worse, but it has.

No hating on you just learn, listen and don't follow the bs just because someone said so. Rick has said it before, helmets aren't bad, doing dangerous things thinking a helmet will save you is bad. A helmet is just a piece of equipment, they aren't designed for safety but to be able to say "see, I tried to make the rider safe." Learn to think like a horse. When barrel racing I used to do it on foot with my horse, side by side (at the start). Guess who won to each barrel! So my horse Pokie would run to the first barrel, drop his head at the barrel, cut hard hugging the barrel, dropping his butt knocking the barrel over. My job was to catch the barrel before it could fall over. By the time I got to the 1st barrel Pokie was close to the second (I would cheat to get to the second cutting across) to catch the second (sometimes I did sometimes I didn't - depended on Pokie's "time") NO bit, NO halter, NO saddle, NO lead rope: Free horse doing what he does with the barrels, proving how slow HIS little girl was. When riding him doing barrels, honestly I didn't have time nor did I have to direct Pokie, all I had to do was stay on and catch the barrels with my hand and foot to prevent them from falling over.
Now I ask, did Pokie enjoy the "barrel racing"? I think so because he did it on his own. This is how I learned to ride, how to "move" with my horses movements and speed, how I learned what my horse needed me to do, not the other way round. He also enjoyed JUMPING to my great irritation because I could never stay on, fell off every dam time. I TRIED to avoid anything Pokie could jump, he would jump a log, a tiny ditch etc. Why do I say he liked it? Because every time he dumped me (not threw me) he would turn around walk right on top of me, lower his head nudging me to get back on. My point, some horses will like some things, some won't. It is up to us to know what our horse is game for and what they are not. Apologies for the book, I hate the video Rick showcased, it is NOT "barrel racing" from what I know of it, the horse does not want any part of it and sad to me because he knows what to do and could have possibly enjoyed it if it had been made a horsey game rather than a human WIN event. With any animal I have worked with I do NOT take any enjoyment MAKING an animal do something they don't want to do when it comes to "fun".

Probably the folk that think you gotta show a horse who's boss and that they're expendable. Sure she's gonna be the county's top racer! Torturing the horse daddy gives her mentally and physically from making him run in circles all day. Then when he becomes anxious, pacing, cribbing, and uncontrollable daddy will buy her a new one.

We had a horse just like this with a full grown man on it at the rodeo last year. Probably the ONE TIME a helmet could have saved a life, after the horse ran his barrels (freaking out just like this beforehand) and instead of being safe with his horse and circling it around to calm it, he decided he was going to race it right back out, but the gates hadn't been opened yet . . . so the horse JUMPED the gate. It bashed the rider's head right into the cross beam over the gates. He won the competiton, but took months to recover from his injury. Too many stupid decisions in the barrel world. It's too bad the little girl is learning to ride like this. She WILL get hurt badly eventually.

Running to the Fence he looked confused there because (horse perspective) when big person on my back that fence is open and I am supposed to run through it and this fence is here? What the? My comment now is he looked confused at the end. Little girl may have directed the horse when going to the third barrel as it was not as direct like the first two. But it looked to me that horse took over again to go to the barrel. Too much horse for and I am not sure what she learned here. Better way to learn is on a horse at her skill level.

Proper use of a helmet. In combat. A helmet, as any grunt can tell you, is not bulletproof. A helmet stops or slows the small stuff. It is also good for hanging equipment like commo and hearing protection. Also your eye protection and maybe the night goggles. On a construction site. First it is required for safety and insurance. Also, as in combat, it stops or slows the small stuff. A bolt from up top might bounce off, a hammer or big stuff just means that the helmet will hold your brains until they can find a bucket. I used a helmet on a motorcycle to hold the face shield. This keeps bugs out of your teeth. Also it is quieter and I used a two way radio installed in the helmet. A helmet does add several pounds at the end of a flexible joint. Leverage, when you stop suddenly that weight might just snap your neck. Having scraped people off of highways I know what is valuable for motorcycle riding. Good, heavy boots, above the ankle so when you break your ankle it acts as a splint of sorts. Scuff resistant pants and jacket. Usually leather but it could be multilayered cloth like a gambeson. This keeps your skin on when you are sliding down the road. Treating every car like it was after you. Many bike "accidents" are actually car accidents when they run over the rider and his bike. On a horse, They can be a fashion accessory or a required impediment. Remember leverage and that they do not show that they actually work. Don't ride stupid and you won't be in as much danger in which case why do you need a hot, heavy brain bucket?

Rodeo, and ALL of the sports that go with it, have been sickening to me since I was a little kid. Human hubris is so disgusting, and rodeo carries a unique brand of it. There is something horribly wrong with people that derive fun and entertainment watching the suffering of an innocent animal. Yes, I eat meat and have some leather products, out of human necessity. It is also highly important to me, how we farm and kill, the animals that are feeding the masses.

I hate horse shows in general. A few years ago, I went to a barrel racing event to watch some friends, and some people there were so ignorant that they had tied up their horse to their trailer and left it there alone. While they were off doing who-knows-what, the horse began to colic. About a half hour later someone noticed and notified a vet, but they were too late, and the horse ended up dying... So because of stupid humans, the horse had to pay with its life. Absolutely terrible.
