Whether you love or hate Linkin Park, Shinoda was the lifeblood and creativity behind it, without him there was no Linkin Park. Yes you need Chesters voice, you need extra input from the musicians, but it was always him putting together the concepts of each album and creating each song, then the others would add their ideas and input to it, he was always the mastermind.
He's a true artist and very passionate about music and I have always been a big fan of him.

I can't say I like any of their electronic or pop leaning stuff but you are an idiot if you think hybrid theory and meteors are not absolute classic albums. I also liked their hunting party album as well. But when Mike is on point he can be a damn good rapper too. Like even some of his solo stuff with Fort Minor is actually pretty good. He's not exactly a mad wordsmith like Eminem but the dude can be a pretty good lyricist in his own right. Honestly Go back and listen to the rising tide by fort minor there's some decent stuff on that album

I didn't respect LP back in the day that much until one guy in college that only liked the most mainstream pop songs in the world also loved LP. The guy was able to listen to Chester roaring and screaming his lungs out even though he didn't care about rock or metal. That to me clicked, LP was a truly remarkable and special band, an all-around spectacle that was able to speak to so many types of music fans, no band has ever done the same. Bon Jovi my ass, LP was pop but also heavy AF. They were fucking Star Wars. Kudos to them.

I've always felt like A Thousand Suns was the last album that Linkin Park made that was what they really wanted to do, and everything after was a response to the reception of previous albums.
      - Living Things "Fans think we strayed too far from the Hybrid Theory style, let's mix that old style with A Thousand Suns"
      - Hunting Party "Oh shit, fans didn't really like the electronic stuff, let's just make a really heavy album"
      - One More Light "Fans wanted heavy but didn't like Hunting Party, fuck the fans, let's just cater to radio with the most generic possible pop we can think of"
As a result, those 3 last studio efforts feel incredibly forced to me.
That's just my perception, and I can't fault the band if these last 3 albums were really them just doing what they wanted to do, no holds barred. But A Thousand Suns was the last studio album that felt genuine to me and I haven't been able to enjoy their latest releases as much.
Rebellion is a cool song. So is Guilty All The Same. Or Roads Untraveled. Roads Untraveled is great. But that's it for me.

I have properly discovered LP right after ATS came out(I have heard all the singles growing up, of course), and while I started with Meteora and HT, I have later found myself enjoying their later albums way more, I bumped A Thousand Suns so much and argued about how good it is for quite a while. And it was really an unpolular opinion back then. People were looking at Minutes to Midnight the same way, even though it is so well composed and just full of well arranged and interesting songs.
Even now I am enjoying HT and Meteora way less than most of the stuff that came after, excluding One More Light. Also, the Hybrid Theory EP was something else. When I have found it I was consumed by it, the darkness in the songs there is almost physically tangible.
I am glad to see that people are starting to "get" ATS.

    • @RyanStorey1231
      @RyanStorey1231 Před 3 lety +8

I definitely feel that their later albums are much better. Hybrid Theory and Meteora are very well-crafted and ahead of their time sonically, but they were very juvenile lyrically, and no matter how innovative their sound was, it was always going to be a product of the cringy nu-metal days. The fact that they evolved beyond the nu-metal scene, which was already on its way out, and dared to be more than just another rock band proves that they were truly a one-of-a-kind group.
There was a lot of growth on Minutes To Midnight, and they matured into the band that made A Thousand Suns. If their core fanbase hadn't been angry white boys who just wanted another Hybrid Theory to angst out to, I think the album would have been received better.

I think Linkin Park has a lot of great albums, and some of them still get some recognition, but I think Reanimation is unjustly underrated. Sure, it's all remixes of Hybrid Theory, but I actually prefer a lot of them over the originals. It's more hip-hop, more electronic, it has incredible guest artists, and listening to it from start to finish is still a journey, from the opening to the closing Krwlng melody. I'm a lot more interested in hip-hop than I was in middle school, and listening to it with a more hip-hop appreciating lens really brings out new lights and nuances in its content.
Reanimation was the album I had on my original Xbox, it was one of my favorite albums to listen to on my bus rides to school. Now, years later, I don't listen to LP 1/10th as often as I used to, having branched out in my musical preferences, but man, does that album hold up to this day.

Man almost everything he said was so honest and insightful. The thing about young artists having an edge due to their particular propensities that would read as amateurish or low-fidelity to others is interesting. Not only is it the case when upcomers work with bigger producers does there sound become too polished or overworked, It's sometimes the extreme or gritty or low fidelity that we are want anyway. A really good recent example is the Artist Eyedress. The guitars are quite considered and especially drone which isn't crazy but what stood out to me was just how amateurish or crappy his beats are. Sometimes the kick and snare barely relate to each other tonally and they're usually quite quiet or drowned in the mix. It reminds me actually of MY bloody valentines Loveless, where the drum hits are barely there, which enhances the tubular, ambient and looseness of the proceeding sonics. I just would never think to throw some half-ass, almost ironically played out drum beat like that together, but it definitely slaps.

Loved this one, you two had great chemistry. It goes to show how mature the two of you really are to be able to have such an engaging conversation and level of respect for each other, even if you're not too big on Mike's music and you're not hiding it.
Linkin Park was and still is my favourite band. Actually the first big concert I've ever attended was theirs; I was 18 and they had come to my country for the first and probably last time. Man, I was so excited about it all.

  • @JustinProper

I'm so happy they navigated this conversation in a civil way as opposed to reactionary or just getting mad at each other, which very easily could've happened. This was one of the most satisfying interviews I've seen in a long time.
