I agree with your wife. Steak Umms are tasty for a quick and easy cheesesteak! Grilled mushrooms are a great addition as well. Provolone is my wife’s go to cheese, while I like it paired with Cheese Whiz.

I grew up with a single parent home with my mom. She was a waitress, so she would bring home steak-umms from her work because they used them in the steak sandwiches and steak salads. So needless to say, steak-umms were an integral part of my childhood, and I will always have memories sitting down eating steak-umm sandwiches with ketchup lol Now that I'm an adult, with a griddle, I add more flavor and use different condiments but every once in a while I'll just do a plain steakumm and ketchup! 😏 Nostalgia.

I purchased the large box from a wholesaler of the pre measured meat, and honestly its just as good as fancy cheesesteaks I get around here. I find I'm able to easily portion control or adjust the meat for a person I'm making it for, and I don't have to worry about remembering to pre-freeze a steak to shave it, or any of the challenges that come with preparing any cut of steak. These also work good for variety of cooking methods or stir fry (which on the griddle would be amazing I think)

I finally broke down last summer and did frozen beef patties. They were great. But what I liked mostly was I could quickly without forethought make burgers. I see this frozen meat video having the same benefit. It's another way of keeping your "pantry" stocked up. It doesn't have to be the best. But when you're jonesing for something it will save you from having to go to the grocery store for ingredients. And that's a good thing. Especially if you see frozen items on sale. Stock up and save some money. Have a great day 🌤 😀.

I did a quick break down for prices around my area for this
      Steakumms -- $9 for 15oz we needed roughly 3oz for 1 sandwich
2 slabs of meat = 6 oz and roughly $2 for one Sandwich
Ribeye at Publix $5.79 a lb Yes i know it on sale but...
Ground Beef $4 a lb typical price
      Choice Sirloin runs around $6
I think the idea of them being cheap compared to what is available when you can use anything to replace it gets overlooked..Once cooked the amount of grease that comes out from them is alarming.. Just a quick roundabout of other options,,,

It looks like Steak-Umms have changed since I last had them 40 years ago. I didn't even know they were still around. I may get some and give it a try. I remember when they first came out and I saw the commercial and talked my Mom into getting some. It wound up being something we ate semi-regularly for a bit. It was one of the first things I was allowed to cook on my own, right after I mastered heating up Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. It seems like I used to make 2 "steaks" and fold them in half between 2 pieces of white bread (I hated cheese at this time in my life and still hate most condiments). But I remember them being more like actual sliced steaks piled up and not as processed, but I was a stupid kid at the time and didn't know any better.

I was born and raised in Philly. Make them however you like them! However, a traditional Philly cheesesteak that was made everywhere when I was growing up 50 years ago was steak and American cheese. Most people would get fried onions and ketchup. (Yes, I said ketchup!). Never saw anyone get peppers on them back then. Cooper brand sharp American cheese is the best cheese for a cheesesteak. it has the best flavor and easily melts into the beef. Cheese whiz is for tourists! It’s getting harder and harder to get a good cheesesteak anymore, and the newer places in the last 20+ years make them with different combinations like you made. Fried Pepper and egg on a hoagie roll was the go to on meatless Fridays.

As a man who knows his way around a steak and who appreciates good Wagyu. I can honestly say for a budget meal, if done right and paired well it'll be excellent. The best cooks can take the cheapest ingredients and make it taste like it deserves a Michelin star or at least one AA Rosette. At least I know now that doesn't matter what brand I buy I'm just a stickler for labels. Thank you for sharing this.

My honest opinion is this...it gets hard to eat because it stringy,. it pulls and not tears. I would balance that with an extra few cuts...slice thin the rough chop...that way when you take a bite the ingredients aren't falling out and you have a better chance to get a clean bite.
Flavor wise its all about seasoning...when done correctly its hard to tell the difference minus the moisture you miss from ribeyes..

I have found a decent frozen steak for these from Sams. They are called Steak Eze. They are formed into an oval patty shape and you break them up as they cook. They end up looking just like the ones you made. Just made some this weekend on the flat top. I'm not a pepper guy on steak sandwiches, but I love a ton of mushrooms on mine. I like white American cheese as well on these and my burgers. Steak sammies turned out great. Would they taste better with fresh rib eye?? Probably, but I like the tenderness of the processed stuff for these sandwiches too. As for melting the cheese on top at the end?? I just think you left in on the flat top a touch too long. Try just letting it get started melting on the flat top & finish melting on top of the hot sammie. Love your videos!! Headed to the frozen vs fresh burger video now.
