I'm sure everyone who's been gaming for a while will have a beloved franchise that went down that road.

This video made me rewatch the entire Austin playlist.
I know this video is a year old, but I need to say something and I hope Austin sees it. I guess you could call this comment an open letter to Austin lmao.
    Dear Austin,
Thank you for this. When your SCIENCE videos came out is was probably darkest period of my life. I was in an abusive relationship and had no ability to care for myself. Your videos were a bouy in the turbulent seas of my mind, and I didn't even realize at the time how much they helped me. Not even just the creativity and the humour and the math. Hell, the content was barely what made me love your stuff so much. It was you. It was the energy you brought to each video and the way you've always been willing to be vulnerable and ernest in your videos. In times where I was verging on suicidal, your videos gave me something to look forward too.
In the same period of time you were going through your struggles with finances and Zoloft I was apparently going through something similar. My finances were destroyed by COVID and I was taking prozac which caused the same symptoms you described. I just came out of it a few months ago. I'm just finally getting my life back, and then I found this video. On a random whim I searched Shoddycast for the first time in years (partially cus I just watched through BDG Unraveled on Polygon, and it reminded me of you lol.) I watched this video while I got ready for work this morning and I felt seen. I felt heard. When you said "it's just... Me" it brought me right back to the day I made the same realization. The way you talked about fear of coming back and anger at the time lost hit me in my soul.
Idk what this comment is for or why I felt like I had to say something. I guess I just want to say thank you. Not just for the content of the past, but your transparency and vulnerability. You made me feel less alone then and now. Whatever you do, I know it will be great. I always concidered myself a fan of your work but I'd say without a shadow of a doubt that after seeing this I'm becoming a lifelong follower. Whatever you do from here, I'm on board. Parasocial relationship reactivated.
Thank you Austin. For this, and for everything. Shoddycast may or may not be dead, but I'm not. And I think you have a lot to do with why. In my darkest times you unknowingly provided a light and through screaming about math and giants and lasers, you probably saved me from myself.
Sincerely, me and everyone who loves your work.

And I am in such a dark place as of this week and seeing that he’s back and posting, it gives me something to look forward to. And I find such comfort in this video, seeing that he is a human, just like me, and he feels bad, even if he can’t control it just like I do.
To the commenter, thank you for sharing your past and being so open, because it inspires people just like he does. Small interactions do make a difference and reading your comment made a difference in my day. Have a great day and thank you Austin

They really need to be more clear about all the terrible side effects from SSRI's and the like. Not to mention the dangerous interactions, EVEN with all natural supplements.
Whoever is reading this. Whatever you do, do NOT take 5-HTP while taking an SSRI. 5-HTP may be natural and all, but that combo is potentially deadly. For whatever reason, no one will ever warn you about that lethal combination except for me. Just don't do it! It feels TERRIBLE.

Humans have an unfortunate tendency to focus on negativity. We feel less positivity to being given a glass of water than the negativity we would feel upon someone taking that glass of water from us. We don't think about our toaster until it stops working. The average person doesn't give one hot damn about the complexity of a vehicle under the hood until the vehicle stops performing its functions. When it works, we accept that it works. When it doesn't work, SPECIFICALLY when we want it to, what the fuck? Stupid piece of junk. Suddenly the stuff under the hood goes from being a marvel of engineering that we really don't give much of a damn about, to it becoming our enemy that is preventing us from getting done what needs to get done.
So yeah. Unfortunately for a lot, or most, or maybe even all people, a compliment will tend to give us less positivity than an insult will give us negativity. We get used to things going well and come to accept it, it can even be called ignorance because we tend to IGNORE what is functioning well and functioning correctly. It's the problems we tend to focus on, rather than the good.
That's why it's important to count your blessings, to remind yourself of the good things, to appreciate the good in your life instead of ignore it and take it for granted.

Thank you for the memories, thank you for all the laughs, all the irrational behavior, and most of all thank you for letting us know you are better now. Please take care of yourself

Man, I gotta say - thank you for making this video.
I've been going through a very similar situation/cycle/whatever-you-want-to-call-it with my music. Bar Hopping was my "Devil's Advocate".
That didn't help, so I recreated "Mike Check", and that made things even worse.
Then I told myself I would "give myself permission to take an extended break" - and now that I'm watching this video (halfway through currently), I think im coming to the realization that I may genuinely be done with music. After 17 years, I think it's time to put down the microphone. I still love music. But I don't think I can do it anymore.

But, I'm still glad to see him on Game Theorists. It isn't his fault, he just had a lot of responsibilities and he had to make a decision. I shifted to my official account just to make this comment. As a society we need to start accepting that things end. Shoddycast like many things was unique and beautiful, an art that called out to others in its own language and pulled in those that understood it, a conversation to be had. It is often in our parasocial interactions and relationships that we forget those people are just that, people. Shoddycast didn't die, it changed and when people find something comforting they fear change even if it is for the better. But change is inevitable, enjoy what it gave while it was here but know it cannot always be. Shoddycast like many things was unique and beautiful, but who and what Shoddycast was could only exist there and then, any other time, any other people, any other ideas and it would not have been Shoddycast. Austin never killed it, only changed it, and for him it was for the better.

As someone who had a nearly identical experience with Zoloft I remember listening to your videos with little "upped my dosage" snippets mixed in here and there and wondered and worried I may see a creator I related to and had welcomed into my life as a pseudo-friend who's voice got me excited to see how bat shit crazy the answers science provided would be. Even though I'm intimately familiar with the majority of the concepts maths and science behind what you addressed hearing you get as excited and engrossed in it as I get was one of the highlights of my life.

Hey, man, just want to say I loved your videos on FallOut years back (I want to say 2016 was when I binged them), all of the Science videos & how you talked about if FallOut was real to the chaotic tune of Grieg. They got me through some rough times, and I hope you have a way to get through your own rough times. I hope to see more videos like them, but I also hope for you to be well. Best wishes. Just know you have a positive impact on many around you 👌🏼

I may be just one person amidst the sea of a million, but I am still here, and I am still listening, and so long as you produce content, I will be here, Austin. Remember that. You take the time you need, needed, will need, and there will always be someone waiting for what's next. I've always enjoyed what you do, and I'll continue to enjoy what you do. I had half a mind to write out a lengthy story regarding how you remind me of myself, but this is the CZcams comments section, afterall. Not exactly a place to dump a long tale for a man who likely won't see it. All in all, my opinion is that you kept ShoddyCast alive. Even at your lowest you have an energy about you that I just cannot find anywhere else. The way you speak and conduct yourself, produce your content, it has, and still has, a unique charm to it.
There will always be detractors, and I know how that feels. Even if it's just one comment, it still stings, still keeps a man up at night. One thing that always bothered me is that you've received that treatment across channels. "Oh who's this Austin guy, this guy sucks. Ew skip I thought it was game theory not suck theory" Makes you wonder what you did wrong, was your script bad, your delivery lacking, your presentation boring? When the reality is the only reason they're upset, is not because your content was lacking, but because you weren't MatPat. They wanted one thing, and were given something else. Even if that something else was just as good. (And in some case better, as some of the best videos on GT are some of yours.) I saw a lot of that energy here. People wanted content exactly this way or that, and looked to place the blame on you once it was over. You make great content, and continue to do so.

I absolutely second this notion. I came to your channel (I know it wasn't originally yours, but it is now and that shouldn't be objected to) because I saw what your content looked like on GT and thought "wow, a whole ass channel like that. That's really something speciall." I still feel the same way, and as long as you make content I will be here to consume it. Take all the time you need my good sir. I will be here waiting. Not impatiently, or with anything other than goodwill towards you and what you do. I know I don't speak for everyone, but for those like me, we love you man. Thanks for what you do.

I lost my best friend to his battles with mental health last February, then the pandemic happened and so much else. You're one of my favorite creators, and I relate with pretty much everything you said. The feeling of the dam breaking, of all those emotions and all that pain... I get that.

And for those sleepless night where I just needed to get my mind to be quiet, your videos really were a blessing, you’ll probably never realise how much you helped ❤

Austin, I physically cannot describe to you how much joy your videos have brought me. The, Mirror’s Edge video, got me back to running and fitness after the Marine Corps rejected me due to my Asperger’s Syndrome. Seriously, I built massive portions of fitness plans around rough mathematics derived from that video. In discussions about nuclear engineering from Fallout, I have advocated and changed the minds of people and Autistically spat useless knowledge about Uranium decay and such at friends, loved ones, coworkers and many others. This barely scratches the surface, and I have come back to them all, many, many times. Whatever happens Brother, good luck, rock on Man. Do your best always, and smile even if things feel impossible or hopeless. Smile like a fool and love the fact you’ve brought us joy. Smile for your wife and child and all the love to both.

  • @alaskanoffroadadventures2545

Even to this day I still rewatch the fallout science vids just for lulz. The energy you have is great; and I hope to see more
