    That triangle cutting bits in the pliers is genius. Just like having a centered drive, that is just a no brainer and once you see it it makes you really wonder why it took so long for someone to make it.
    You are right on, I think that since there is a fine edge blade that a saw would be preferred over a serrated secondary blade.
    From one lefty to another, that is indeed a winner, thanks for the great video. I watch you a lot to take tips on how to make my channel better, just by watching what you do.

    This is the first positive review I've seen on this multitool. The negative reviews reference the multitool in use rather that referencing specs (other than using it to screw in a light switch plate). Despite the title of this video reading (ie, 'review'), this is most certainly an impressions video.

    You're right Ben, it needs a saw! I've always been a Gerber guy with multi tools for the flick of the wrist, one hand open feature. Yes, I've thrown them a few times while trying to open them! Nice to see they have the knife feature as a one hand open tool now. Great review, thanks!

    3-year Centerdrive owner here, I actually bought this because of this review, and I'm only now coming back to write this. The center drive is a great tool my favorite part is the driver and is really the main reason I picked it up. My only complaints with it are that the prybar/crowbar is kinda malleable when you start to really put some torque behind it and the wire cutters can be brittle and dull easily sometimes they straight up shatter. I don't like how the locking mechanism for the awl side of the tool is made out of some type of hard plastic but it has held up very well. Other than that my knife has held an edge with minor sharpening. unfortunately, even with coats of rust protection and maintenance after 3 years of nearly daily use, it finally started to rust a bit. Also, I'm hearing a lot about the sheath being of low quality, This is untrue as mine survived 3 years of abuse and still going.
    The center drive has been good to me but with a heavy heart, I am moving on to the Leatherman Surge.

    I have an old Gerber multi tool that is I am thinking 20 years old. Served me well during my Marine Corps career. I was in the market for a new multi tool that could also be a bit driver for my range bag. I did a lot of research and was about to pull the trigger on a SOG PowerPlay. But my problem with SOG is they are made in China. I am sick and tired poorly made tools from China. Your review convinced me to buy the Center Drive. I will use your Amazon link. Thanks for the great review.

    Just bought this multi-tool, and I'm really impressed with it! These days we have multi-tools that specializes in certain types of tasks and this one definitely has the best screwdriver. I love Leatherman multi's, but I thought I would give this one a try,and it's well worth the price! Good video!!!

  • @preparedmind101
    @preparedmind101 Před 7 lety +7

    Mine was $99 at Field and Stream. I had $100 Amazon gift card, but they weren't in stock and I'm impatient.
    So far I like it as a TOOL. Love the screwdriver. But it's BIG and I don't want it on my belt when I already have a S&W Shield on. I put it in a HSG Single pistol mag pouch on the side of my HW Haversack. I haven't really had time to play with it, so no set time when I'm going to do a video. For on-body I'll stick with my trusty Signal.

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft Před 7 lety

      Yeah it does seem a bit big for general EDC, especially as you pointed out when there is a g19 and spare mags already hanging on my belt. That said for something to put on my belt at work, it seems darn near perfect. If it had a pair of scissors, it would be perfect for my needs at work. I look forward to your video, whenever that may be Chris.

      For the guys who just gotta have scissors on an otherwise perfect MT, just pair it with an alox SAK Classic, one more thing to carry but almost no weight, and a completely non tactical blade for when you need to look completely harmless

    I bought one, there was a Black Friday deal and I got the drill bit set with it and the sheath w/ storage for the drill bits for $99.
    I was dying to get one, it normally ran like $150 if you got it on the Gerber website. A little too steep, but $99 and free shipping, right up my alley.
    I love this Multi-tool, it's one of the best I've ever had.

    i've been using this since it first came out, Automotive work, wood work, just about anything i figured i could use it on and it's been pretty great except for the pry bar it actually chipped removing a wood staple i was like wth man. There were a few other instances my sog and leatherman were better for the job i was doing, but all in all i think it's a good multitool.

    nice tool, i like the serrated blade, i have never really seen the point of a small saw on multi tools i prefer my silky pocketboy for sawing tasks. my only query would be what would be the max limitation be for the pry bar and the durability of the mechanism.

  • @semco72057
    @semco72057 Před 5 lety

    The screwdriver feature and the longer knife blade is the reason I purchased the Gerber Center Drive multi-tool and never regretted getting it. I have the extra bits somewhere around my place, but should have kept them in the case they came in as not to lose them, but didn't. The other tools are nice also, but are just extra for me.

    I have a Leatherman Charge TTi, which has served me well over the last 2 years. I have never had any issues with it and have no complaints about it either, before this in my previous job I had a Leatherman Kick which I was trying to break so i could get a Leatherman Wave, because that´s what all the new guys got, but never managed to break it, I am sure if I took a sledgehammer and bashed on it it would break, but I had to make it look legit like it broke while working, but again I never managed to break it...which it also what really got me into leathermans and earned my trust and respect for them. I actually still have the old leatherman kick at home somewhere. Anyway, I have seen images of this and seen it for sale at a few outdoor shops, is this Gerber really as great as it is made out to be? ...should I get one or just stick with my old trustworthy Leatherman Charge TTI?

    @alexoneal1029 Před 7 lety

    Yeah Ben...I think Gerber did a good job with this multitool...had to sharpen the blade (and the serrated blade) right out of the box but overall it seems to be a pretty robust and useful unit....a saw would be nice to have in the tool set but the file makes up for it...

  • @zeros_knives_and_bushcraft.

  • @Bune80
    @Bune80 Před 7 lety +7

    Honest, solid review buddy...but...they kinda steared away from what gerber is good for, and that's budget items. I may consider it one day, but multi tools are starting to be like phones, they're coming out with new and improved ones every year and the end result is a drawer full of multi tools you don't really use. Bottom line is this, the best multi tool is the one you have on you, and the most needed is the one you have and forget to take with you.

    • @10191927
      @10191927 Před 7 lety +2

      WarGrrl3 I would "almost" agree, but honestly the lack of scissors on this really doesn't bother me, mostly because I hardly ever need scissors, and I wouldn't want a pair of mini scissors on this tool, I would want full size ones similar to the knife and the screw driver. That I agree would be great on this tool.
      But it really is a high quality tool, I have another multi tool with scissors and once I saw how much bigger and better the tools were on the Center Drive I just forgot about the other multi tool.
      So I would reconsider passing on this tool, you might regret it.

    • @WarGrrl3
      @WarGrrl3 Před 7 lety

      Marth after checking out the surge, i think it's the one I want. I like the Diamond 'file' on 1 side n the regular file on the other. I will however seek out a really good deal on it, as i am good at that. I can usually get stuff for 1/2 price cuz I'm patient; that's the key.

    • @10191927
      @10191927 Před 7 lety +1

      WarGrrl3 That sounds good, The thing that made the Center Drive a winner for me was it solved issues I've always had with past multi tools.
      For me the pliers closing completely with the body so you get the maximum amount of pressure if you're cutting wire or something, that was huge for me. I would always be wishing a multi tool could just close completely, and this delivers.
      The full size knife was also a huge plus for me, no more dull mini knives, and the screwdriver with the drill bits sold it for me. Not a weak "one size that doesn't fit all" Phillips/Flat Head driver, so that opens up the tool a lot more and makes it very flexible.

    Good Video,
    I find it hilarious that this review and the Gerber Center Drive 1 minute promo videos are comparing it to the Leatherman OHT. It's like a bunch of people got together and someone said "lets cherry-pick the leatherman that will look the worst next to our new tool"
    That being said, I'm looking forward to trying out a Center Drive.

    • @jasonorosco1125
      @jasonorosco1125 Před 7 lety

      I've never had a problem with the Leatherman 2D bits or their bit drivers. The 2D bits fit into and work with any 1/4 inch driver and if you had to use a standard bit then you can use the small adapter.
      As far as I can tell, the main advantage of the Center Drive is that the driver is ready and accessible from the outside. On Hand access is a big deal for me. But if we are all going to be fair we should give credit where credit is due. The skeletool has a bit driver that is easy to access with one hand. My first leatherman, the Crunch, has a standard 1/4 inch bit driver and it's pliers are easy to access with one hand.
      In any case, like I said before, I am looking forward to trying out a Center Drive. When I first saw videos showing the bit driver on the SOG Reactor I thought they finally made a tool I would buy, but then I heard all kinds of poor reviews. I hope Gerber doesn't let me down.

    Center drive is what happens when Gerber finally listens to it's customers. It keeps it KISS and addresses the biggest issue with multitools and it's driver length. I wish it wasn't so pricey though. I also hope Gerber uses the center drive as a new platform for later tools like the MP series from 2 decades ago.

Other companies and individuals make similar and superior products so I am not missing out. He asked me, "Why do you ask?" I informed him that I hated partially serrated blades. He asked, "Have you ever tried one?" I told him I did and my experience is where the intense dislike came from. "So how about it any chance at a plain edge LMF?" "I don't know." CLICK. He hung up on me. Crappiest customer service in the entire outdoor gear industry.

    I think that gergber cant compete with leatherman, surge and wave are more handy that Gerber, but good vid!!!

    Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like there is a bunch of wasted space inside the "center drive" handle? Wouldn't a saw blade fit there perfectly?

      Living Survival Honestly I hope Leatherman will build on this with the Surge. I would prefer the Wave, but size and available space will be the limiting factor.

    Would you please give a review on a multitool called ROXON, you can find it on youtube but i think its THAI language. The product is from china and you can buy it from amazon.uk, amazon.it and aliexpress. I like your reviews, thats why i am asking. Sorry if i asked too much

    I use to love Gerbers but the quality went into the toilet. I even had a pair of pliers on one of there multi-tools snap in two. I'm sticking sticking with my leatherman for now, and it was cheaper.

  • @tsmall07

    The main thing I'm missing from the center drive (other than the saw) is scissors. My Leatherman Blast has a really great pair of scissors and I find myself using them often. The center drive is also significantly bulkier than the leathermean. I'm not sure which I prefer yet.

      Fingernails man. That's what I use mine for. You know how sometimes you get those pesky hangnails, sometimes a little precision multi tool scissor is the perfect thing for that.

    Looks good....but, why do they give your that extra bit on the tool and the included set of tools? In my opinion that is a waste of tools space, from the comments, scissors would have been more popular. I'll have to read up or look at one. Does the file have a diamond side? That is a must on my multitools, while camping, fishing or backpacking I don't have to pack a extra knife sharpener.

    Cheap rubbish when compared to a Leatherman. I recently bought one of these after I lost my Leatherman. In less than a couple of months - the "slide out" pliers had jammed half way out and I was never able to push them all the way home again. Not long after that, the main knife blade fell off - it's still sitting on the bench out in the shed. I do like the driver - but that's about its only advantage over a Leatherman. I have since purchased a new Leatherman Surge - simply a much better built and more robust tool, and it has a lot more features than the Gerber. Yes - it cost a bit more, but is worth the extra cost. Sorry - but I won't be buying Gerber again.

    removable bits are an automatic failure of a multi-tool. a multi tool must be static. super tool 300 and the 1st genaration of the wave are the ones I've found to do the most tasks in an industrial setting. if you fold the handles long ways on a leather man, it puts the driver center
