I have that multi-tool and love it so much. Gerber did a great job in designing this tool and it comes in handy for hunters, machanics, or the everyday person and I am thinking of buying another one to keep in one of my vehicle's.
I bought a Gerber in the military, used it more then any tool. My unit/division was able to purchase Leathermans for the entire group one year with leftover funds. I continued carrying my Gerber and regifted my Leatherman to my Father in Law. I'm both a big knife guy and gun guy and I know your your knife background "you guys" love your leathermans. Gerber has been innovating for a long time. Also next time, hold the pliers sidways, make a fist, open your trigger finger, insert back of gerber, secure with them, then do a side an up and down flick with the tool 90 degrees from your fist. Smooth deployment everytime.
Another thing to point out is that this tool and the Sog ones take a standard 1/4" Hex bit, so you can sub in other weird bits that other multitools don't have, like torx or square.
Thats the first Gerber I've seen that looks worth checking out. I still think Leatherman has the edge for real work, but this tool looks pretty interesting.
I have been carrying the center drive around at work and I don't know what I ever did without it. I used to carry a vise-grip multi tool but it got in the way a lot because it requires a full size plier sheath. A couple of things that I wish were different: they should include a small Torx key that fits the screws on the replaceable wire cutters, or use a standard straight blade screw. I like how the sheath can be worn upright or inline with your belt, but I wish they made it to sit on your left side for a cross draw. I always have a tape measure on my right, plus I think it is easier to reach around to your left and pull it out than from the right.
I picked one up to use while my Leatherman is in warranty. Use my multitool daily at work and honestly it will be a Leatherman replacement. Love the center drive and easy opening pliers and not sure I can go back

This multi-tool is on my Amazon wishlist. I still rock the Leatherman Supertool, after all these years. I really haven't found "reason" with any of the others (Wave, etc). They really didn't do anything for me. This one, however has sparked my interest enough to really want it. Three points I'd like to make... First, you don't have to "flick" the pliers out, like on previous versions of the Gerber multi-tools. (You doing this tells me that you have have Gerber multi-tools already). The new mechanism used to close the pliers has a smooth action and allows a simple push forward to engage them. Don't flick, just push. Second, the carbide wire cutters are actually sharpened on ALL THREE sides... when one side dulls, or you get a minor chip in it, just undo the screw and readjust it to another side. You will not find another multi-tool that offers this. And thirdly... people seem to have a problem with a serrated blade on it instead of a saw. (This is my personal preference), as I use serrated blades on multi-tools as fish scalers. I eat fish flesh, as it contains a lot of nutrients most others just just fillet and throw away. The serrated blades are great scalers. If I need to use a "tiny" saw, I have probably the best ever on my simple German Army Pocket knife... and it will probably out-perform any other on a multi-tool that I've ever seen reviewed. It is so sharp that it has it's own guard on the saw blade that must be removed first. Check them out "peeps". My German Army knife goes with me everywhere. Thanks again for the review Shane... Great videography and concise review. The spring loaded pliers are a big PLUS. For my type of (camp/hike) user, I would trade the main blade for a saw and keep the serrated blade for cutting cordage more effectively than my main carry belt knife. Modern twig stove users can make some use of a saw blade in a survival setting. Too bad someone doesn't work out a custom shop deal with Gerber to recombine standard tools into special multi-tools.
You are holding the pliers wrong, turn them sideways and the flick out the pliers, that way they slide out the first try every time. Second point the triangle cutting bit in the pliers can be screwed out and turned so you can use it 3 times before having to replace them. No other multitool does that. It is a piece for a lifetime, awesome and versatile tool.
@@kyklain86 probably the surge would be better from a technical standpoint, it has 5 tools accessible from the outside, and feels better in your hand, at least i own a rebar and a surge, the st300 is basically a bugger rebar right?
have had one for a few months now, the driver is great for a multi tool, I find the crowbar/can opener very useful. I am not a fan of the carbide inserts. I often have occasion to cut steel wire or rod and thickness that standard steel cutters could make it through the carbide cutters will shatter. wish the option existed to put steel inserts in there. Also mine did not come with the bit set, I ought to get one.

This just might be me, but I don't see the point of not having scissors. Not sure why Leatherman went and changed the blade on the Juice, but oh well. Others may differ and want a saw, and that is perfectly acceptable, but I just find that behind the pliers and screwdrivers its what I use scissors more often. Oh well Scout, do you think it would double as a hammer? I find that to be my favorite "hidden feature" on my Leatherman Wave. 10 years strong

I got one of the Gerber (with the magnetic bits). I was OK but I traded it in for a Leatherman Charge and was MUCH happier. The Gerber just didn’t have the same quality feel the Leatherman does.
I have a Gerber diesel, an the file is legit on quick jobs, much better than my leatherman. I carry it with me every day, but the biggest advantage is the one hand open. If I need to grab something hot, or hold something I will weld, the one hand function makes it the only tool for me.
I dig it but also agree with others that it should have a saw and not the serrated blade. Screwdriver is one of the main tools I use on my Wave and like the reach on the Gerber and standard drivers.
Nice new gimmicks that help, but it doesnt compare to my Leatherman Surge. The Surges ability to inter change the saw blades with jig saw blades, and the massive tools it provides, along with the wire cutters.
My Centerdrive is going back to Gerber for warranty stuff already. The spring in the pliers failed within an hour of taking it out of the box and all I was using it for was literally to bug my girlfriend by stealing her stuff with the pliers
I would not use such a non-insulated metal tool on electrics under any circumstances! I have also had a bad experience with the first Gerber multi-tool where a short tool blade snapped while prying off a tin lid! That was probably down to a poor heat treat, so hopefully a one-off.

I broke the carbide cutter inserts on my Gerber Center Drive then I went to Gerber's homepage and noticed that those cutters have a 5 year record of bad reviews, mostly for the same reason, so I guess a lot of people have had the same problem. Has Gerber ever addressed this in any way, and if so how? People have suggested making the inserts out of steel instead (like a Leatherman does), has there been any talk about that from Gerber? It really seems like the way to go.
Bought 1 and returned it, disappointed on the cutter. I like my cutter solid evenly center and sharp not like scissor. Very important that I cut my wire evenly center because it's not paper. Paper can be cut and reshape not with hard wire. Give me a sharp hard center cutter and I get one with out hesitation.
That triangular wire cutter appears to have 3 cutting surfaces that can be rotated into position when the prior is dull. Don't own one but that's how it looks. I agree, a toothed saw blade would be way more useful than that surated one.

I have a surge in my pocket now... But the pliers snapped on it so considering other options. I'll probably get another leatherman though it's the first time I've ever had the flyers in a Leatherman brake. Charge tti is probably their best model it's expensive though I had it once before and lost it.
If you want to do real work throw the sog away, what bothers me the most about the powerplay/lock is that the pliers are fully opened when the handles are completely horizontal to each other... Why? How is that a useful MT? when it comes to usefulness Leatherman is the best way to go and most of Gerber's MTs are ok, the suspension I had was great. I really think SOG is a joke. Back on point... is the driver portion on the Gerber metal or a polymer material?

Blade play after a couple days, bit driver loosened up after changing license plates on 15 cars at the dealership, and the blade's edge retention is horrible. I went back to my SOGs and Leathermans within the first week of carrying the Gerber. Yes there is a chance I got a bad one but given that I have never had a quality Gerber item I highly doubt mine is just a bad one
Does it still feel pretty awkward to hold onto when using the screwdriver tool? Seems like it would still feel very odd compared to a regular round handled screwdriver. Great concept though for sure...that is the downfall of many multitools the screwdriver blades are offset making them extremely odd trying to use.
gerber has always dissapointed me when I needed them most, shame its all chinese junk metal. Glad to see more of their profucts being made in the old usa. How on earth did you break your Surge? I work in construction and use mine everyday, and the only thing that has got bad is a small chip off one of the cutters
The nice thing is you buy all kinds of bits for the driver and not have to get proprietary bits for it.

The screwdriver and cutters tend to be what I use the most on a multi-tool. That makes this one interesting.

Very good review. For me, the lack of further outside opening tools outweights the one hand opening pliers.

electrical work. Real work (Mechanical, plumbing, appliances, motorcycles) require real pliers or better yet adjustable (Spyderco).
Great tool Sheath sloppy on the belt replaced sheath with nite ize tool sheath better now even has slot for bits holds to belt better no slop

i have a question: The unloking piece for iner tools is made from plastic or metal. Its same piece used for finger rest when you use the knife.

Wish the bit holder had a manual lock...magnets wear out over time.
The amount they wear out is not noticable and takes many many years. A manual lock can break.
