- In this video I discuss how MMA fans just do not seem to show much interest in the flyweight division. This is evident in the build up to UFC 301 which is headlined by Flyweight's Alexandre Pantoja and Steve Erceg. I believe that these guys need to start talking some trash to get people more interested. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Current Flyweights are very fun to watch, but most of them are really nice guys with boring personalities.
Only time they’ve been somewhat popular was during the whole Moreno vs Figgy beef. But other than that they don’t really promote themselves at all

UFC is a promotion company. It’s their job to promote the flyweight division.
If they can’t, then that’s their fault. It’s their problem. Not the athletes.
Deivison Figueredo was the last guy to bring the flyweights into new heights by Koeing guys left and right, then he got beaten by a guy that still plays with leggos. And it turned to the Pipsqueak edition once again.

Only casuals dont care about a certain division. Im excited everytime a title is on the line. Also if Erceg happens to somehow pull this off, THIS WILL COMPLETELY SHAKE UP THAT DIVISION. And i think if that happens, A lot more lower ranked fighters with good records will be fighting for a title. This fight will be entertaining and casuals will be surprised

125 doesn’t need a dominant champion, if anything it needs more champions. The biggest issue with flyweight is the history of flyweight. There is no lineage. DJ had the belt for seven years and left without a convincing loss, Henry left without losing, Figueiredo left after going 1-2-1 vs Moreno. Morneno is the only former Champion left in the division and he had already lost to the current champion before losing the title to him. You have no stars because it’s impossible to make a star fighting guys you’ve never heard of and don’t have any accolades.

I mean the height thing is kinda aged badly now. Brandon Royval is 5 9. Steve Erceg is 5 8. A lotta fighters like 5 7. The division has gotten bigger. The problem is that those bigger guys are losing to a 5 5 boring personality fighter. I’d rather market a strong personality with boring fights. I’d market Manel Kape. Plus his fights are fun. And he’s like 5 6 right? Not too short. But number one thing is they gotta talk smack. So you’re 100 percent right on that.

Absolutely agree. The weight class is too small. It took away the physical aspect of the spots and that is the first line of entertainment. Also agree on the second point you made. Personality and rivalries are also a source of entertainment and there is none so far to build on.
I like flyweights just because it would be my natural weight class and it's always fun to fantasize about who I could potentially be fighting if I ever were in the UFC.
At one point people felt the same way about the featherweight division - and even about the lightweight division. Eventually some big stars emerge and opinions start to change.

Some fighters seem to forget that the majority of the sport is made up of casual audience that are only looking for pure entertainment, either a scrap, a knockout or a hilarious fight buildup, it’s really that simple. Even if you have average fights in their eyes, as long as you’re funny people will like you, everyone can say the DJ and Ben trade was terrible but in reality it was perfect, Ben made the UFC more money by losing one fight than DJ made for them throughout his entire career, Ben losing made Masvidal into a superstar, while it was short lived that stardom made so much money that it was worth the trade. All of you can say no it wasn’t but based on ppv (which is the only metric that matters in the sport) not a lot watched or cared about DJ until he left, even he admitted that he should’ve talked some shit. Also, Ben really came in, talked shit, got smoked, and still made BANK, these fighters really have a master plan of how to make quick money even if you lose and still don’t take it😂

There’s no meat to the punches and hits. It could be a crazy scrap, and it could look like “wow that shot really hurt him,” but then the same thing happens 20 times in a row and you’re like, oh I guess that didn’t do that much damage. I wish mentally I enjoyed it, but something about it just feels off
I know a lotta older guys like my friends dads and shit that always say they “love watching the lil guys fight because they are fast and scrappy” but only in a general sense they have no favorite fighters at these weights 😂

It's the UFC's fault, they never promoted Flyweights even when DJ was here and on his winstreak, or during Cejudo's run. During that time Dana was talking about cutting the division entirely. Also related fact: the only reason WMMA exists in UFC and hasn't been cut, is so they can pad PPVs with WMMA "title fights" without having to pay male champions more money to fight on PPV. It's just a creative way the UFC cheaps out and waters down the product.
Their simply all too well rounded which mixed with natural speed at that weight makes them all kindve not that dangerous to eachother compared to slower/more dominant area based fighters like all flyweights are all just boxers with good jui jitsu and wrestling
I think the reason no one cared is because we came off ufc 300 so that’s where the hype is at. So a decent card is something no one cares about if you came off amazing card

I also believe flyweight is cursed due to the fact that it's one-directional. A champ couldn't drop weight and fight in a division below and there is no division below it for a fighter to move up. And rarely will a BW move down to fight in flyweight. So there's no real possibility for a fighter who's not a natural flyweight to fight there.
