  • This homeowner had water leaking through their ceiling and called a plumber to check it out. Upon inspection, the plumber found that the leaks were not coming from the plumbing pipes or drain. They cut a hole in the ceiling and determined it must be the tile shower pan that is leaking. The homeowners called me out to diagnose the leak and find out if if can be repaired. Check out the video and find out!

Laid down 3Mil PVC, 8" up the walls, filled with 2" of cement, and brought the backer board down to 1/2" off the base. Covered everything with RedGard, and thinset all porcelain tiles to the backer. Next time you test for leaks in plumbing you want to isolate the plumbing in the wall from the shower pan. First thing I would do is plug the drain with a test ball and fill floor with water to top of curb. But water needs to come from another source other than the shower valve. To check the plumbing in the wall , cap all the out let's and charge the pipes by turning on the water at the valve.

    This is why I don't trust the liquid applied membranes either. Settlement can also force those "membranes" to stretch beyond their capacity. I don't see that happening as easily with the fleece backed membranes. I am sure you can rip the fleece membranes but dollars to donuts a liquid membrane will rip with 10x less force.

    • @Waremonger
      @Waremonger Před 3 lety +1

    I just want to say that I have a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes when installing a tile shower. We had a water leak showing through our living room ceiling and put in a claim to have it investigated. It appears the incorrect membrane was applied to the bottom of the shower which over time leaked and caused water damage. It has been over a year since we had the shower torn apart and we are reluctant to have it repaired due to not trusting anyone to rebuild the shower correctly. We need more people like you to make homeowners feel good about the work that is being done to their home. If you have any recommendations for south of Boston I would love to hear from you. • @pjplumber2146
      @pjplumber2146 Před 3 lety

      Grout and tile are not water proof. Sealer only lasts about 2-3 months. But on the floor every minuscule movement is a movement. Tile doesn’t flex. It all starts with a pop one morning. Then 4 years later your shower floor is softer and flakey than grandmas biscuits. So a good base foundation to absolutely zero movement. But then the wood behind walls swells and contracts a thousand times a year. So really I always suggest to budget a new shower floor every 15-20 years. Keeps everyone from stressing out.

    Long time watcher (and subscriber) and I have a question - regarding shower pans: Does anyone other than Revolutionary Shower Systems allow one to order a custom size? I'm seriously considering this for my next shower remodel but would like to compare others that also do this, though I haven't found any yet. Also, what product would you use for waterproofing at this point? I've watched your evolution but am not sure what your fav is at this point : ) You do good work, with your work ethic and heart in the right place. It's nice to see.

    The problem isn’t the hot mop or the hardy backer. The reason why is is leaking is because the first row of tile needed to go above the tile of the shower floor. This is the reason.

    I have done some major nice tile jobs now and had GCs come in during the waterproofing wondering what we are doing... sad really.
    "we do tons of showers and never do this stuff"

    Another issue is that homeowners that are selling the house dont want to pay for other issues. They just cover it. Sometimes the only thing wrong the installer did is not adress other issues to the owner like frame damage. Water damage. Etc. And if he did... I have seen it many times. They still install with issues and you get a series of unfortunate events.

    A lot tile setters don't dip the prep work, the contractor typically subs it out and will have his helpers install walls board.
    However, the tile setter should have recognized that the boards don't go all the way down and there wasn't any seam tape our waterproofing membrane

    Thank you for your instructional videos. They have really helped me out in tackling the task of building 3 complete showers after tearing out fiberglass originals. I was wondering if you are familiar with mapei CQ grout and what may be a good sealer to prevent staining. I'd love to with you images of our 1 of a kind showers.

    What a bummer, that some blocking (and back when this was done, wood was “cheap”) could have prevented what will now be around “xx” for a remodel shower now.
    If installers would just slow down and take a few extra minutes to make sure things “correct” before continuing, imo.
    That is another BIG ISSUE. A nice shiny new bathroom when buying a house, imo, sends up FED FLAGS; b/c why and if have multiple bathrooms….why just 1 redone and not the rest; especially if not the master, or everyday bathroom/shower. If happen to see a shower/bathroom that is the guest or the bathroom in the downstairs room that no one uses and it’s been redone….I’d take a few and find out why before spending money on a house. That’s my opinion. Drywall cheaper to fix and if able to “inspect” the shower/bathroom before you buy and find issues; easier to knock down price of house so can use that money to fix the issues; then pay asking and find out have an issue down the road and be out “said money”.
    The same things apply to outside or anywhere around a house…..if your buying and you see “new nice stuff etc….” Ask yourself WHY! and remember an inspector is not gonna open a shower floor/wall, and electrical conduit (and see if romex or THWN/THHN) being used; they just gonna look at common things and check those boxes so you’ll get approved.
    Thx for vid Issac, and FYI, it’s hot and humid in FL…so make sure have some loose fitting summer clothes, & definitely stuff that if gets wet; not gonna be an issue as in rainy season😉 If already here in FL, hope trip going great and having a great time,
    Cheers✌🏻

    Sir, can you answer me the following question: I'm a novice and your'e the expert. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The way I see it, is that a leak emanating from a shower can be from one of 3 causes. Either you have a drip from the supply line, i.e a drip behind the wall. 2) the problem is in the drain, or 3) a problem with the grout where you have penetration. Is it correct then, that the following tests can determine which is it? after cutting a hole in the downstairs affected ceiling, you have someone observe for water when you first pour 3 gallons down the shower drain. if no water seen, then its not the drain. turn on shower, and let the water enter a bucket to assess if the supply line behind the wall is the culprit. If this test is also negative, then spray the shower head to all walls and observe for water coming down. will these tests work? thank you for your time.

    This is horrible. I started doing things myself, because sadly here in my city those jobs are common. Just bad people cutting corners, or claiming to know something they don’t and you end up with a bigger mess and a bigger bill. Workers get so mad when I’m watching their work and bringing things up, they say to me “do I tell you how to do your job?” I tell them it’s my house and I’m paying for the job.
