Absolutely love the video. Chuck your demeanor really comes through on the video, quite entertaining. I think I would have to pay you to be able to work for you...really reminds me of one of my mentors. Much appreciated.
That being said I have the same problem. Nobody wants to cut a hole but water has clearly leaked onto drywall. This needs to be removed and thoroughly cleaned with bleach and allowed to thoroughly dried before reassembling so it doesn't get moldy.
I get what you are trying to do but if the boss is right and it has been leaking for 25 years it needs to be addressed.
I love the comment about inventing something, and I have. You will not like it but it needs to be done.
So what I did was to create a template with half inch 5 ply plywood. Then I use a 1/8th inch drill bit to make sure where the studs/joists are and mark them carefully.
Then I use my drywall router against the template to cut the drywall just inside the studs/joists. It helps to wear the tyvek suit and respirator and have an assistant (not the boss) with a shop vac sucking up as much of the drywall dust as possible while routing. Other dust measures need to be taken which I wont go into detail about to prevent it from getting all over the house, you can use your best judgment how much work prevention is worth compared to clean up.
With this method the template not only serves as a guide for the drywall router it also holds the piece up on the ceiling so it doesn't fall down. It takes two people to remove template and drywall piece cut without breaking.
Then after everything is thoroughly cleaned and dry you attach pieces of 2x4 flush with face of existing studs/joists using 3" structural screws predrilled with the 1/8" bit. The you reinstall the drywall pieces you removed and or the access door for the future conditions depending and you call the guy to match the texture and paint. A good painter/texture guy and no one will ever know that a hole was cut in the ceiling and you will have the peace of mind knowing it was tested for leaks when it was open and any potential mold issues remediated.
It is a lot of work to do it correctly, and even less money will be made to do all the extra work but IMHO this is the way, the right way to fix it correctly and efficiently. Please let me know what the boss thinks of my prescription.
    Thanks, G

Chuck , leave water and trim on. Take a pan of water poor it over pop up trim while somebody listens downstairs for dripping noise. Wait a few minutes, DO the same water poor around the spout and repeat around the handle trim. O rings could be leaking on moen cartrage and running back in wall. Take trim plate off and run water to check. Another threads leaking la shower arm leaks when shower is run.

Came across this video today, doing similar job of diverter to handheld sprayer in tub only. Was a nice good laugh after failing to get my plumbing project done. The sprayer leaks a little, but the tub was not draining fast enough after last weeks house PRV replacement. Plenty of water pressure now. The boss was standing in 3 inches of water after shower. I don't have all the parts yet for tub, needs new diverter spout. Increased flow and drain needed adjustment, its fine now. I feel your pain. She is wanting to know if her shower is in service or not. I feel an access panel coming for this setup for a permanent showerhead. The handheld is suction cup mounted, it better not fall off and hit her in the head or I wont be hearing the end of it.

@@ChuckBarron Hi Chuck. I did what you did in this video and it seems like it is holding so far. I did cut a trap door hole in the next room to get closer to see what is happening. The only thing I am a little upset with is to get the nut removed on the shower valve off with some Liquid Wrench I needed to apply quite a bit of force and the valve is not vertical now but it still works and doesn't leak. I'm thinking if I try to straighten the valve it could cause the little tubes to crack. Thank you Chuck! Keep up the excellent videos.

Hey Chuck thanks for the video. We have a drainage a leak upstairs from the tub that leaks into the bathroom directly downstairs. My first comment is I think my wife and your wife are the same. I mention cutting a hole JUST to see where the leak is coming from and she said no and we should get someone to look at it and find where its coming from. Mind you between my dad and I we have over 60 years experience in plumbing and pipe fitting but in her eyes its better to pay another plumber $1,000 dollars to do what we have more time than money to fix. But who am I. I just fix everything we have problems with at our house. Anyways.........I am going to follow your lead on replacing the calking and puddy which will cost me less than $20.00 easy. Then I will tell her "I told you so." No im not stupid. 16years of marriage I know you never say that. I will update you on my findings. Thanks again brotha.

I always thought the little hole was a drain, cause if the water got behind the metal it would absorb into the foam and drain out the bottom. I like to think its just there incase of moisture gets behind the wall that it has a little air hole to let air in to help it dry. little air movement never hurt no body.

Best tool for those Moen shower valve clips is really thin pair of Needle nose pliers, that way when you pop them you won’t lose the clip in the wall.I also bought a couple different Husky pairs of multiple small grab tools like that pick and a small screw driver kit to.

Yeah that cutout is for water drainage. If any water happens to migrate behind the seals it can run out harmlessly through the weep hole. Windows have them too. Alot of times if there is a leak on a window its because someone covered the weep hole. No paying job today brother. Lol.

Mr Plumber, you should invent something to solve the leak. One thing I don’t understand is- the problem was not there until I had to call you. Now you are saying that you have to cut the wall? No one said that for 25 years, everything was fine. Come on!

Tile or fiber glass. Tile Maybe a pan. Clog shower drain and fill up a little... fiber may be a crack.

Chuck Barron hey! Dallas, TX. Thanks for the share on the leaky faucet. I’m having issues with a old 80’s shower. Leaking from under the pan on to my concrete slab. It’s a tiled shower not fiberglass surround. A hole in the wall confirms it’s not my mixing manifold or pipes. Maybe old grout? It’s not the door because the water is a puddle that grows from beneath. Searching for answers! Thanks in advance!

what I don't get is why someone with no Knowledge of the issue can ask completely off the wall questions and demand an answer with a straight face and we are compelled to give them an answer and educate them.. Why do we put up with that? We are the ones that know and we are the ones that can fix it and we rule and that is THAT!
