Dundee Twp, MI Fire Dept Federal Sign and Signal 500-SHTT sound off on request May 5th, 2009

- As a request, I got permission from the fire chief to set this siren off for me. This is a 10/12 Port Federal Sign and Signal 500-SHTT running in Attack signal which is what they use to use everyday for fire calls. This siren has been re-located to the new station at a different site and is only for display today. According to Ron W's information, This siren was first installed in March of 1970 which was used as a Tornado Siren back then and this siren replaced an old Sterling that apparently got damaged by a lightning strike. It is unclear of when the Fire Dept started to use that siren as their fire call siren but sometime around 2008, West Shore Services refurbished the siren head and may have installed a bad gear reducer (which is probably why it rotated so fast). I hope you all enjoy.

It almost sounds like a Thunderbolt and an 2T22/3T22 combined. Man, does that thing have an incredible RPM!
Eric Wood from the sound of it, this thing must have something like a 10/12 port ratio, the same as a 2T or a 3T22 siren
2T? as in Model 2T? if so no a Model 2T is 4/5 ports like the odd Thunderbolt 1000T (rare) or even more rare the 1003
2t22 stands for 2=Two, T=Tone ,22=22 horns. Two tone 22 horns. 3t22 is 3 tone 22 horns. 10 on the bottom, 12 on the top.
Edaan Friedman I know. I learned that a while ago.
Ok.
2 things
1: it sounds like a 3T22
2: it is soooo fast
It sounds like a thunderbolt too
Holy SHTT that's fast!

The Sterling was taken down in the early 1970s, when a new roof was placed on the fire station. It sat over the township building for 15 years in storage, and finally went to scrap, when they decided to clean it out. I always loved that Sterling sound as a child.
This siren rotates so fast it looks like its going to fly off its pole.
The max for rotates are 8 RPM i think
yep

I'm glad someone finally got down to Dundee and filmed this beast! Good work!
That is THE fastest rotating siren Ive seen in my life.

That is one awsome siren!! It looks brand new. Never seen any other siren spin that fast. Great vid Dan!!
Who gave the siren some drgs?????
Dan, this siren looks and sounds great. I'm glad you were able to record it! I was shocked at first to see the horn whipping around so fast. Hopefully that's not too much torque on the rotator gear!
attack mode/wail and a very fast rotator
Wail and attack are 2 different things
Dang this thing is older than my parents lol
Ahh... refreshes my mind to hear that 10/12 port tone. Rotates like a T-Bolt too with the 8 RPM. Great video! Five *
it exactly sounds like the CLM siren and it rotates the same
I wonder if it uses the same part is the same as a CLM.
yes it does. both are 10/12 port however this one’s has one single chopper, while a CLM has two.

This siren has been removed from the fire station. Yes was removed and put on a shorter platform. Never was wired back up. So now I believe it's pretty much a display piece.

wow thats the fastest rotating siren i think ive ever seen....nice video!
does the allertronic siren work? i know there is a modulator across the street
@Siren1000T1 Do Sirens Still have Belt Driven Rotators?...or are most Going to gear Driven ones?
You Spin Me Right Round Baby Right Round
@EOWS 812's SIREN PRODUCTIONS He might not have its a famous song that used to play on the raido station i dont hear it anymore but it played a lot
@USRoute66 What happened to the sterling? Did it die and was it scrapped? The 500AT also used to be a civil defense siren to right?
@Siren1000T1 Dont the Belts Wear Out after a Few Years?...does the Speed of Rotation Matter much?...as far as Coverage?
Im Assuming that the Speed of the Rotator Mechanism is Adjustable like the Thunderbolts?
This siren has a sound remix between 2T22/3T22 sirens, Thunderbolt sirens (probably 1000T) and a B&N Mobil Directo siren
Dundee's 500AT, was installed in March of 1970. I can still picture the siren on its tower with a canvass bag over it when it was first erected. Moreover, Dundee had a 16 port Sterling vertical siren before this 500AT showed up, that was used for fire/rescue calls.
Who gave the siren crack?
Great video! I've always wanted to hear a 500AT in attack.
It’s not there anymore sadly I wonder why?
Would you happen to have some photos?
Not only did the Sterling get hit by lightning, but a Whelen WS-2016 that had Ultravoice panels and was on the Monroe county system also used to sit near here, and it too was hit by lightning!
Is the rotator slowing down with the chopper or is it just me?
Wow,great job on finally recording this beast. The rotator setting is haul ass I think.
I remember someone at the Dundee Fire Dept telling me that. They also said that if they were to build a new station, they would keep the siren. There is a Modulator a block west of the station which is actually what I would consider the "Tornado Siren" because it's part of Monroe County's siren system.
@Siren1000T1 What is Direct Driven?...No Belts?
@form109 Yes. You have to adjust the belt in the rotator in order to do that.
i think that the motor that runs the chopper also runs the rotator because when the siren winds up the rotation speeds up as well. that might be the reason its rotating so fast.
this siren video has the BEST wind-up i think ive ever heard.
how loud is it from 100'?
Just like that mobil directo! From the RPM, to the port ratio!
Its just like on Allertors or Penetrators. The motor is set to how fast the rotator goes along with the chopper motor.
@Siren1000T1 So the rotator is driven with the same motor, not a separate one then.
HOLY SHTT!
Haha
@form109 I think you have to place the belt on a specific section on the pulley wheel to make it spin at 8 RPM.
what siren replaced this as being a tornado siren or do they still use it as a tornado siren?
Holy SHTT
Pfft

nice 10 RPM there

wow that rotats fast btw great video Dan
Has this be restored since it was installed.
The speed of its rotation makes this scary for some reason.
sounds like a high pitched thunderbolt 1003 or a 2t22.
rotates faster than i thought and based on the sun light hitting the siren, very cool.
Can I use your video because I’m going to crate a comp of sirens?
Yeah that's fine.
Holy shit. That spins fast!
Holy #shtt
OMG THAT SIREN IS HIGH OR SOMETHING!!! That this spins amazingly fast!!!!
best vid of a 500AT on youtube
Why was it taken down
My dad is on dundee firedepartment and after the tornado the siren is still there it can also be used as a tornado siren if it needs to we dont really use it anymore though because we have to reset it every time and most the time we forget to. Btw we were having a cook out at the stationthis day and our fire millage passed and we are getting a new fire hall
Is the siren on tol of the Building?
@form109 I think they are mostly direct driven by now. Its a BIG improvement too.
Reduced power?
Why does this siren speed up when it winds up and then slows down when it winds down? that seems a bit weird.
500 SH TT ?
I just hear the lirycs:You spin my head right round!
@acahurricane1275 The description should say that this siren is still in use for fire calls. There is a Modulator a block away from this station which is used as a Tornado Siren and is also part of Monroe County's Tornado Siren System.
Sounds a little like a 2t22. Is it the same motor for the chopper and rotator?
Wow fast!
how old is this 500AT?
do they test this on the last wed of each month at 10 am?
They don't test THIS siren, but they test the Tornado siren on the last Wednesday of every month at 10am
I wonder if you went up there and spun it by hand it would makeany noise..
Why dose it roatate fast??? ITS FREGGEN FAST
Dan, what years were 500ATs produced?
P.S. I Am glad the Whelen could not replace this siren!
12 rpm?
@flippy941 Standard 220-240 volt service is two phase in North America.
Sounds like a B&N Mobil Directo
Same ol ratio
sounds just like a Canadian CLM siren and rotates like one too.
If this siren is still there and they still sound it..could you pleeease try and get a distance recording? :)
Man, I love these things!
was this siren restored or repainted? sounds/looks healthy.
to bad they scrapped it, did it still work when it was scrapped?
wow that siren looks and sounds great.....and rotates really fast. i'm guessing its 8 rpm like the thunderbolts. nice video dan. 2 thumbs up.
This is on Main Street just on the west side of the river in the downtown area of Dundee.
