      tunezjunkie87 There was a civil defense siren at my high school (half a mile from my house), and I'll never forget the racket it made when it was tested! For some reason, the county got rid of them in the 80's, and considering that central Maryland still gets hit with the odd tornado and DC is right there, taking them down was a really dumbass idea.

We’re going back and forth at the hall about our siren (which mind you, i could hear in my apartment on a clear night, three miles away, in the middle of the city, over two hills, a river, a ravine, and a railroad embankment behind our hall. Anyways, we’re talking about how ungodly loud our siren is. Lt says to Karen “siren’s wailing away, and your mum is swatting at flies, like ‘do you see a bug flying around here?’ That’s the fire siren you old bat’”. It is 115 decibels in their living room.

    • @JPa311979
      @JPa311979  Před 9 lety +12

      The solenoids block the top and bottom intake pipes. The air air gets blown out the 12 horns on the top threw the top pipe and the 10 horns on the bottom get their air from the bottom pipe. All that you need are 2 solenoids. Blocking one intake pipe makes the high tone(top row) or low tone(bottom row) go silent.

    This reminds me of my time in Kuwait back in 2009 during my time in the US Navy. We'd have to hear this every Thursday Night about 8 pm at our base. And god forbid they're about to execute a drill...
    "Attention on the base! Attention on the base! *EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE!!!* (1:00) *INCOMING!!! INCOMING!!! TAKE COVER NOW!!!*" The siren would continue to wail while we would get into our bunkers and wait until the sirens would stop wailing and then, " *ALL CLEAR! BEGIN RECOVERY PROCEDURES!* "
    Good times in the desert... I don't miss them, but I'll always remember them. Not to mention, having to sit in a bunker between 20 to 45 minutes listening to the siren over and over again, sitting out in the heat of the afternoon with temperatures around 125... just to take roll!

    I've heard this a decent amount if times when I lived in Minnesota, if you heard it in the non scheduled time every 3rd Wednesday of the month then you knew get inside or a shelter because a serve storm or tornado was coming in the area. Or if you were like me, you'd stand outside in crazy heavy rain/lite hail, 30-50mph winds, and lots of lightning because it was exciting

    Where I live, they test the sirens the first Saturday of every month at exactly 12 noon. I'll never get used to it. What sucks is my bedroom window is 350 feet away. Over here it is used to alert the fire department. We have a magnesium casting plant here in town and every time their fire system gets a little hot it triggers an alarm.
