- This video is a free preview of my upcoming course on how to burn 350-700 extra calories per day by increasing physical activity levels (and using short bouts of exercise) throughout the day.
In this video, Dr. O explains the largest metabolic rate study ever conducted. It shows that movements is one of the best ways to improve our metabolic rate

We live in a two-story house with high ceilings and an 18-step climb. Our kids, who occupied the second floor, went off to college and careers, so I moved my office and television upstairs but kept my phone downstairs. And I make a point of only using the downstairs bathroom. The point is that it creates many reasons to go up and down those 18 steps, including just doing it for no reason but the calorie expense. It's a small thing, but it really adds. Also, I gave away all the upstairs furniture, even the necessary stuff, giving me lots of room for pacing.
This is EXACTLY what I am talking about. So great to hear. We need to build movement into our life. I did the same thing in reverse. I moved my office to the basement. I go up the stairs every time I need water, need to use the restroom, to let the dog out, etc.
The small things will have a BIG impact if we stick with them long enough to see results. Keep it up!
“Doing less isn’t the answer🤷🏽♀️keep doing things until they become easier” Thanks for this naked truth 👍
You are very welcome :). I have made changes to every aspect of my life during my health transformation. I am proud of all of it. But transforming into someone that loves to move and exercise is what is sustaining me. I used to have trouble keeping up with my family. Now they have trouble keeping up with me.
Wow-this is a major mind shift for me at 59 years. I'm going to try and remember daily the step by step with your dad. I have been so inactive all my life. I've just started using my stand up desk in the last 3 weeks. Try to stand 4 hours/day. I have 3 Grand kids, 6, 3 and 1. I NEED to start moving. We are so blessed to have these videos.
Thank you for the kind words. I love sharing my story (and the science behind it) because I know that I can help others reach their health goals. I take that responsibility very seriously.
I understand what you are going through because that was my life for 20 years. 20 years of sedentary behavior took its tool, but I am fighting back a little bit every day.
My son is 9, so I won't have grandkids anytime soon. But they are my motivation for standing more, moving more, lifting more, etc. I plan on being strong and energized whenever I finally meet them :)
I found this quote recently, and it is simple but inspiring: "All things are difficult, before they are easy" --Thomas Fuller. This is exactly what Dr. O'Neill is talking about.
I love that quote!@@elizabethkoenig5185
@@GrowGrayMatter Thank you. Dr. O.
Very encouraging. Thank you again!
You are very welcome. I wanted this video to come off very positive. It stinks when our metabolic rate is lower than we hoped. No doubt about it. But we need to focus on the parts of our metabolism that we can control.
My metabolic rate was about 600 calories lower than my "predicted" metabolic rate when I first started losing weight. Now it is higher than the predicted rate and I am burning more than 3,000 calories most days. It takes a lot of hard work, but it has been oh so worth it :)
Reach out if you have any questions
Thank you Doctor!
It is truly my pleasure. Reach out if you have any topics you want to see me cover. I am always looking for ways to help :)
I love your videos !!!
Thank you so much for the kind words. It means the world to me :)
Are these videos from your course? Because I’m thinking on purchasing it.
This course is not ready yet. I am just sharing some of the videos as I get them done. I have made about 70 for this course.
My 2 courses that are out already are on intermittent fasting and sleep.
I will be talking a lot more about physical activity in the coming weeks. As you have seen with my fat-loss sweet loss series, I truly believe that our muscles are the key to fat loss :)
Reach out if you have any questions. I will make sure they are covered in the course. I plan on finishing it over my winter break at the college, so it should be out in January.
Then I am moving on to a massive course about low-carb/keto
@@GrowGrayMatter so there are multiple different courses? There isn’t one i can follow so that i can lose fat?
My main goal is to cover every weight loss topic over time@@Bot28111 but time is limited, so I tackle one topic at a time. My main course at this time is about intermittent fasting for weight loss.
I am also having a website built where I can start to share more resources. My ultimate goal is live Q & A sessions where people can ask any weight loss related question they want
Fingers crossed that it will be up and running early next year
@@GrowGrayMatter Awesome
I am excited about it as well@@Bot28111. I doubt my wife will be because she thinks I am too busy as it is, but deeper 2-way conversations will hopefully help even more people than the videos can :)
7 lbs fat if it is true
Thanks for reaching out. I am not sure that you mean, though. Have you lost 7 pounds? Let m know
@@GrowGrayMatter Sorry Doc. Haven't lost an ounce or a gram yet. I was thinking that metabolism goes down as you lose weight so maybe they don't all lose 7lbs.
Thank you for clarifying@@mikecar52
This is what makes physical activity even more important during weight loss. You are correct. Our metabolisms will go down during weight loss. Moving more is the key way to minimize that or keep it from happening. Here is a video where I explained why:
czcams.com/video/WYHjBHYmzmc/video.html
I will share a lot more about this topic in the coming months.
This is also why I prefer fasting programs that allow you to eat more than your maintenance calories on some days. This is called calorie cycling, and it appears to help with preventing your metabolism from slowing as well:

I hope these help. Reach out if I can help you tweak things.
@@GrowGrayMatter Cheers
Your dad might also need sodium or magnesium or electrolytes. 😬. Heavy legs could be thyroid. 🤪
We are looking at i from every angle. So far his blood work all looks good. He was deficient in Vitamin D, but that has resolved. Thanks so much for thinking of him :)
@@GrowGrayMatter I love testing, but I think their ranges are sometimes off because they are using folks on SAD to determine normals. I try stuff on myself to see if it works or not. A little sea salt or LMNT during the day shouldn’t hurt, but might help. 😬
Oh for sure!@@ruthketo3167 My doctor would be terrified if he knew how much sodium I get per day, but that's just what it takes for me to feel my best. We need to constantly tweak things to find our normal rather than just going with "typical." Well said :)
