- Today I will take you to another must-visit thali place in Mumbai. This time it is the best south Indian pure-veg thali that you can ever get your hands on. The food is freshly prepared, extremely simple yet delicious recipes, and a 100% true south Indian food eating experience.
The place was started in 1964 and offers home-style meals for everyone to enjoy away from their home.
Personally, after many many years, I have wiped a thali clean.
The sambhar rice, the kokum rasam, and the Mysore pudding were some of my favorites.

South Indian Meals is an absolute delight.
It awakens spiritual consciousness.
My Dad used to eat here when he worked for Railways in the 60’s. I have eaten here as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. Always fresh and tasty. Truly homemade food
Yes.. i too have ate here in my childhood days..was a biggest foodie ...hats off for the next generation for carrying forward the tradition.👏👏👏👏
So glad it brings back memories
it is common in Mangalore to even make long lasting pickles without even a single drop of oil. they make it using boiled salt water. small mangoes are picked and wiped with just a clean cloth. even the white sap that comes out while picking raw mangoes is kept intact as it is supposed to act as preservative by itself. the raw mangoes are then steeped in the brine for a few days. after about 2-3 days when the mangoes become wrinkly, the same brine is used to grind the masala for the pickle which consists of methi seeds, split mustard seeds and lots of dry red chilis and a considerable amount of Hing. the wrinkled brined mangoes are now mixed in this masala paste and stored in sterile jars. lastly the most interesting thing is they roast Raw Cashew seed pods on coal or wood fire till it is well charred and put it on top of the pickles in the jar and then close the jar tight. the oils that come out of the cashew pods is enough to let these pickles last for over 2 years !! the cashew seed pod is a potent antibacterial which does not allow any mold or fungus to develop in the pickle. if you come across a Mangalore store, ask for "Midi upinkayi" Midi means small raw mangoes Upinkayi means pickle. absolutely delicious with steaming hot idlis garnished with ghee. or with simple dahi chawal or with ghee and rice and this pickle-- Oh God I am drooling as I am typing these out !!
wow that's a full recipe
@@KhaaneMeinKyaHai 😊
Wow! I loved the way you explained, so precisely!
By the way, that's my favourite uppinkai. I love having it with Anna and tilisaaru.. 🤤
@@rojaachar oh yeah that is delicious. or just with plain curd rice
@@KhaaneMeinKyaHai , Kunal you should do a tour of Mangalore with your good friend, Kripal Amana. He has showcased some delectable viands and great eateries from Mangalore.
This is my go to place, I am Punjabi, but whenever I want to eat proper South Indian Food this is my Go To place. Food here is pure bliss. Missing this place and food as I have moved out of India, but I make sure to visit this place whenever I am in Mumbai!
Of course u r in canada
Name of the place?
I have been eating over there for 25 years. Same quality, healthy and pure veg. Foods. Ingredients are well chosen, made Pure Bramhmanic ways. Old to dye to eat there. I used to eat this thali for 25 rs. Only. What a joy.
The owner of the restaurant seems to be a foodie and quality conscious himself. Since he has officially put the board that "the owner of the restaurant eats his food here"
Running a restaurant for 3 generations, that shows, why people love to come here and eat food. Very good coverage, by Kunal, such places are a treat for food lovers.
You will never feel bored of eating out here. Really it's a feeling of home cooked food. Not oily or spicy gives comfort both to the stomach and to your purse.
Ya price is also reasonable
@SS J 😂
sheesh, no gloves yucks
Abe 3 din mein bore ho gaya mein..no masala no oil sab kaccha
@SS J nobody prepares all these items at once at home. When eating out if you feel satisfied that the great sign of good vibes. In other hotels no matter how much you spend and eat, it won't satisfy you meaning it's pure commercial.
Hi Kunal and Team, i think this is the first time rama nayak has been presented in a best way in any show. Legendary outlet. Thanks for pure vegeterian episode. Nilesh must have enjoyed the most.
Dear Sushant Nayak I with my family enjoying your food from more than 30 years ..
One suggestion please name the dishes as we mostly calling at our native Udupi/mangalore..
e.g.
Payasa (not payasam)
Saar or Saaru (not Rasam)
Soutekai (not Madras kakdi)
Happala (not Appalam) etc...etc
Please use our native names,
.. because it's UDUPI RAMA NAYAKS SPECIALITY of it's own
Hopes you will take initiate for this...
Thank You and your team...
Go to your Native & eat there calling by local names
You should write in your own dialect rather than using English language
Hi Kunal, we started going there as a child, when plate Thali was priced at ₹.5.50. We don't know the restaurant's name but is fondly called sada panj wadi Thali restaurant amongst all our friends & relatives. Even our drivers know it by this name. I am talking about early eighties, when idli at Cafe mysore & cafe madras were sold for ₹.3.00 to ₹.5.00.
One of the best ever, superb quality I normally used to eat thrice I a week when my office was in dadar. Nowadays, I have only one in a month type.
But the waiting time is too long ma y a times. And getting the extra chapati ot rice or pickle us a big challenge most of the time. That's the only drawback
South indian Veg Thali is pure love/bliss ❤️❤️❤️💖💖🥰💘....love from Odisha( ROURKELA)
*A culinary Legend enjoying Southern Legendary cuisine in a place full of memories* 🙌🏽
*Thankyou Mr Shashank Nayak for continuing with this Generational traditional* 🤝🏼
*Kudos Kunal for showcasing another 💎*
My Birthplace & Proud to be a Part of Matunga eatery culture, simply delicious, nutritive & healthy traditional Foods 💓
I'm glad you gave South Indian meals a try.
Udupi and Mangaloreans are known for their hotel business, they're indeed very good at it.
South Indians are very thoughtful and live by principles. We don't waste food at all, we're taught about it from a very young age. We don't use too much masalas as they do in North, our food will be balanced and maintain individual flavours by keeping it simple.
Love and regards from Karnataka ♥️💐🙏🏽
I could taste everything that you said in your food including the culture
@@KhaaneMeinKyaHai Very well said, sir! I'm glad you liked 💕🙏🏽
@@KhaaneMeinKyaHai you should try South Indian breakfast as well:
Mysore Baji, gol Baji, Mangalore buns, neer dosae (neer means water), Davangere benne Dosae (Davangere is a town in Karnataka, benne means butter and Dosae means dosa), Bonda soup, chittra Anna (lemon rice), vangi bath (brinjal rice, bath means rice item), bisibele bath (hot dal bath), tatte idli (tatte means plate) it's much sponger than the normal idlis and many more...
Actual pronunciation of Dosa is Dosae (do-say दोसे) it originated in Udupi, Karnataka.
Mendu wada is a delicacy here, from kids to old age, everyone loves it. I stayed in Mumbai for some years but never got to taste a tasty or good quality mendu wada. You should try all the typical South breakfast in South. Idli, dosa and wada tastes totally different and delicious here, in Karnataka.
You're welcome anytime 🙏🏽
I ate here...attended a wedding in a near by temple...had food there and again came back here for another lunch.
That lingering memory 🙌🏽
@@baalah7 yup absolutely, been 12 years still can recall that taste and the experience.
Our indian food is so diverse so much to taste n so much to relish this diverse culture
being a GSB i simply adore this food, i can eat it everyday and on any day
This is Konkani food?
Me too
Owner is so humble, you are awesome person who appreciate all type of food. The way u relish is more tastier than the food
Lucky to have been here and couldn't agree more...wholesome and Ghar ke Khaane jaisa swad 😋😋😋 thank you Kunal Sir and Khaana Mein Kya Hai team for visiting this and reminding me that I need to visit this place soon 🙏❤️
MANGALORE The name is enough to describe the essence of the food what a lucky mumbai to get such a Soulfull food in mumbai that to from Namma kudla

*South Indian food is my all time favorite....you can never go wrong with it* 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Begani shaadi me abdulla diwana.
Patte pe shuru karte hain aur Patte pe khatam..ye dekhe jamana hon gaya..We at our village in Konkan used to experience..This traditional South Indian Vegetarian food is surely going to be an experience, will definitely try👍🏼
I absolutely love Kunal Vijaykar. Such a pure love for food. So adorable!
His Expression while eating Pickle at 11:02😄😄
😂😂😂
Went to eat after watching you this Saturday night enjoyed it the best South Indian thali that to on banana leaf.
A legendary place with consistent delicious food for years. Great episode.
Yes I and my family used to go there quite often from Mahim. But due to my age we can't go there as children r abroad..I miss it even now at the age of 81.We r also GSB .Thus thali can be delivered at home
I have eaten in this restaurant for 3 years almost everyday when i was studying in podar. Loved it. So much nostalgia.
Hum ghanta farak nahi padta.
This refreshed my Childhood Time. I remember the day when My Dad took me to this Restaurant back in 90's. This place Reminds us the legacy of South Indian Food.
Thanks a ton for this Coverage 🙏
I miss Rama Nayak joint very very much. As we shifted first to Koldongri and then to Bhandup. From 1966 to 79. I was a regular when my father and mother used to be out of station we lived in Govt Qrs behind Shanmukhanand Hall. Being a GSB, it was my first choice being just homely food.
So simple yet yummy food.... Kunal ji you present it so well we can almost feel we too are having food... This place has a special memory... My Dad used to like it and he recommended me and my husband... I too enjoyed meal on plantain leaf😋😋.. Looking forward to visit it soon..
the explanation given by the owner is very nice, liked it. And the last thing, the reason he told behind the folding of leave. Its very nice of him.
Yet another GSB delight!!! Never knew this place being in Mumbai... Will surely visit
Mooh me paani aagaya, purani yadein jagadi aaj Vijaykarhi aapne

Kunal is host's delight, always appreciate and enjoy food from North, South, East, West. Keep Eating, keep enjoying.
was a quite frequent visitor here around 13-14 yrs ago...memories came back
Never seen so many sweets in south Indian restaurant. It's like a Sweets Thali .
Dubai has a lot of south indian food, most local arabs also love it
अहो कुणाल! हे माटुंगा सेंट्रल रेल्वे स्टेशनच्या, पूर्वेला आहे, हे लोकांना सांगायला हवं होतं?! असो. It's on Central railway station, Matunga East 😊😊👍🏼👍🏼 We often go there. 👌🏼👌🏼 काळबादेवी मधलं ठाकर भोजनालय दाखवलं आहे का? ते पण गुजराथी पद्धतीचे जेवण मिळतं. 👌🏼👌🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This is real food blogging! With decency and depth knowledge also.
So glad you went to this place. RAMA NAYAK is my favorite restaurant in Mumbai. Very affordable and healthy food. But, guys.... this place is very busy. There is a minimum 30 min waiting even on weekdays at around 12 pm to 2pm. It's never like this. I think, they've gone late afternoon when they are about to close, (for shooting purposes). So,if you plan to visit this place go there at 11.30 am or after 2pm. There's always a long queue. But, trust me it's worth the wait. Don't eat anything before you visit this place. The rasam and sambar is delicious. The rice is so tender and soft. The owners are very sweet. They themselves serve the customers. One of the uncles is multilingual.. he usually asks everyone where are you coming from and starts talking in their language. This is the best eating place in Mumbai. It is the best place for single people because, single seats get free sooner and they let the single people in more quickly. I'm so happy you guys went here. ❤️
yes you are right we were there at 11
Thanks for the detailed information...I will visit this place when in Matunga 😊
I live in USA but so tempted to eat in this restaurant. I do not belong to Mumbai but will make a special trip just to eat at this restaurant when I am in India. I hope I will be received with affection. Offcourse, you said only 1 dessert is allowed but I will have 2 or 3 desserts ( I will pay separately). Excellent video.
@@stocksfarming7530 Thank you. You are really wild.
being manglorean, v regularly visit this place ...u never full heavy after eating this full meal very easy on stomach
Wow 😋.... whenever I visit Mumbai,my visit here is mandatory... superb authentic Mangalorean food one gets here....yummy food...a must visit here 👍👌
When he said Mumbai me ake khane ki suvidha nahi thi.. Kunal ji instantly said Jo bahar gaon se ate the unki.. best🙌🏻
It's a gem and iconic food joint in Mumbai food culture .
If i recollect , Kunal sir you had done special episode in i am foodie in times now or ndtv good times ...
yes I did it on The Foodie in Times Now... but it is just so good I wanted to do it for the digital audience as well
So nice of you.. No wastage of food
Best part of this restaurant is you can remember the day of the week looking at the food. There is no repetition. Sprouted moong is on Tuesday, Chana on Fridays..just 2 examples. Lovely food without causing acidity nor stomach upset. Dedicated cooks preparing same tasty food twice a day.
Main jaunga yahan per khana khane aur puchenge khane mein kya hai. 🤣🤣🤣
We visited this hotal it was so delicious and very tasty ' muh me pani aa gaya'😋🤤
I also like South Indian food very much, really sir you present great episodes.
I look at all kinds of food lovers but your point is more... great sir.. Thanks for sharing food test
Kunal Ji very nice ,I wish you show the Goa temples where you get same GSB food .There are like these religious GSB mahats in Walkeshwar too and the food is same type …I am sure you will like 👍
Took a long time for you guys to visit here. But as they say, 'better late then never.' Another great episode.
I love how spotless the place is and the owner also looks very professional and clean. This is unfortunately not a common sight in lot of places everywhere in India
By far the best food you can get for a reasonable price. A normal meal here would be 2 gravy + 1 upkari with Sambhar, Rasam, Dalitoy along with Chappati,Puri and rice. You have been served 2 additional gravies along with 1 upkari.
Exactly my point. This is not the usual number of veggies served infact they are always basic cabbage, baigan + days serving veg. When do they ever serve jackfruit veggi or kaccha kela veggi- These are unique south Indian veggies never served here.
Kunal Sir, this video is quite full of misleading information. All the People wanting to visit first time after watching this ( Beware you have been warned- variety & no. Of dishes is hypothetical so is self sweet preference. Please don't get ur hopes too high. The food is average tasty, The waiting period excellently high, The food experience is mediocre)
I have been to this place many times long back. Homely food. Have fond memories, Best wishes to this institution .
You are absolutely brilliant Kunal! Your love for food is so infectious. My son, Akash and I are big fans. Would love to share a meal with you someday.
I am 75 years old 🧓 I still love
To eat here.I miss ...
Kunal you are Great...
Really very decent place to have fill our tummy with super good food, I'll definitely visit post monsoon 👍
I love this food. I have visited this restaurant very often.
I'm visiting this place occassionally from last 20 yrs and not a single time I had stomach upset issue after eating here. Rotis, rasam sambhar, sabji everything they make here is totally pure less spicy less oily and fresh. Unlike other hotel which have almost same gravy for many Sabji they have uniqueness of each sabji they have on their menu. Last but not least the price at which they offer this plate is very cheap. Must visit restaurant if you are vegitarian and south indian food lover.
In your future vids please can u keep a balance of the overall sound the music rises suddenly after the the conversations...
Lots of Love 🤗
Video dekh ke bahut bhuk lag Gai...... Super food and super video....
Have visited earlier. One of my favourite. Thanks for sharing the same Kunalji 🙏

We don't care.
Kya baat hai Kunal ek number nice ha.
If I remember correctly, Pu La Deshpande also had mentioned this place in one of his articles. 😍
Excellent for a South Indian Rest. Located in Matunga to serve best S.Indian Meals. I was living in Telang Road, Matunga, n we had a Restaurant named Concerns, n they used to serve good S. Indian meals, n their speciality was to serve Idli n Hot Vengaya Sambar for tiffin. A thing of the past remembrance. Thank u for showing ur varieties n delicacies in S. Indian meal.
this time Kunal completed his plate.Manglorean food🎉👌
Fantastic episode, veg food 👌. Vijay Kar thanks for covering this.

I loved eating at this place Nayaks is very very geninune. Sapadsm
One of the best i have eaten in Mumbai
We especially as family love visiting and eating at this excellent place
GSB people make best Veg food, the veggies are not your typical but different and very tasty the best thing is they don't use a lot of masala, very health friendly not much oil used.and very tasty.
It has been a very long time since I have been there, the second meal when I come back would be at Shri Krishna Boarding. Thanks, Kunal kaka for taking us down the memory lane!
This guy loves all the food he visits.
Rice and Sambhar is very delicious combination. You will get whatever you want in descent quantity but don't waste the food otherwise you will be fined is good philosophy which each and every restaurant should apply when people come to dine in their restaurants.
My favourite southindian food adda..
Wow beautiful food...... i am feeling hungry after eating chicken.
Kunal so proud of you. First time eating whole thali
Excellent home made tasty GSB food...highly recommended for thali food.
Drooling drooling. Ah so beautiful just seeing it. Wonder how it would be just eat it
