Actually, even though Ellie put the gun in her coat pocket, went against what Joel told her, it was very smart. If they were caught or robbed, her pack would be the first thing they’d take and they’d likely not suspect her of having a gun.

I found it very interesting that Ellie's question in the car about Tommy was really answered in the staircase in the house. In the car, there was only the one-sided view of Tommy's life from Joel's perspective of the protective brother. In the staircase the picture was then completed.
Tommy has attacked, robbed and killed too many more or less innocent people with Tess and Joel. That's why he left Joel and Tess for the Fireflys. He then left the Fireflys for similar reasons. Violence without positive results. Basically, he wanted to be a hero 3 times and each time he was disappointed. Joel thinks Tommy needs him to survive. He thinks he needs to take care of Tommy, but Joel needs Tommy more than Tommy needs him. For Joel, it looks like Tommy doesn't know where he stands. But Tommy knows what he wants and if nobody gives him that and everyone around him are nefarious murderer, then he leaves these people and looks for new ones in the hope of bringing positive change.
As I understand it, Henry here is a snitch and responsible for Kathleen's brother death by betrayal. I guess he betrayed them because Fedra threatened Sam. I think Kathleen's brother was the leader of the resistance movement and she was probably the mom of the troops. That's the only reason I can imagine why the group follows her at all, so insecure and focused on revenge she seems. The bottom line is that she has absolutely understandable reasons. Just as good reasons as anyone else on the show and Joel wouldn't do anything else. In fact he did the same. Shows again that no group is good or bad.
Joel executed a teenager here. This was not a man. He was paralyzed, screaming for his mother begging for his life. There was no need to execute him. Joel knew his comrades were coming, he was no danger. Knock him out, so he doesn't see where the two are going. What could he have revealed? It was a man and a child and that's it. Would have been even better, because now they believe they were mercenaries on Henry's behalf. A husband and a child might have interested Kathleen as much as the crater in the basement. Not at all.
Joel's poor hearing has been shown throughout the episode. He always sleeps on the right side and Ellie often had to repeat when she called Joel.
He didn't hear Henry and Sam because he hadn't slept the night before and because he had laid down on his good ear in his sleep.
The only criticism so far is really the lack of brutality shown by Joel, because that is very important. Firstly, Joel was brutal and ruthless and secondly it's important for the second season. I think it is a mistake not to show this in all its brutality. The show still has to improve and I hope it will be later. It just has to.
Btw... I still believe that Ellie pocketed the two grenades that fell at her feet when Tess had her heroic death. And the Bloater under the crater will eat them.
Kathleen's right-hand man with the beard is Tommy's voice actor in the game.

The "Mother" archetype leading a group or faction is a pretty common trope. We haven't really seen the group dynamic, just how militarized they are. I'm curious to see what they do with this character. Historically, revolutions are lead by smart and charismatic people, not warriors.

Ellie was at a military academy so handling a weapon was part of her training. Most reactors underestimate her abilities just because she is 14.
Joel is shut down and doesn't want to feel again.

I get why people are reacting to her casting as a leader of the "hunters" or what they are now, but considering they overthrew Fedra, there must have been A LOT of planning and coordination, to get the entire QZ to overturn Fedra.
All the beards and guns don't mean anything if you can't organize a solid plan. She obviously was the brains, and by her questioning, people were ratting out their neighbors/people who were planning the uprising. Her brother was ratted out, by Henry (probably because they threatened to kill Sam) and murdered by Fedra interrogators. Looks aside, she clearly LED the rebellion, and has maintained everyones trust and support.
This seems to be the beginning of the end, because her right hand obviously doesn't agree with her going after personal revenge instead of dealing with the real danger under the sinkhole. They've all become their own version of Fedra, and when the people realize she isn't putting them first, even KILLING their doctor for a personal feud, they'll likely overthrow her.
