My goodness. Last year my English teacher made us listen to the Serial podcast and even do a mock trial on it. Everyone in my class was hooked. This was something we debated about for weeks. His case was a huge part of the year so much so that when he was released people put it in their stories on Instagram. I didn't even think that he would even get coverage. Nice to know that Adnan did. 😁

I think it's called speaking truth to power using comedy, something Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and Samantha Bee do as well. I don't think its fair to compare political comedy with banter talk show comedy. That like comparing apples and oranges imho.

In fairness, the Serial Podcast was not responsible for this. They may have bought attention to the case but they were not proactive about his innocence, in many episodes of the pod, it was actually the opposite. It has been his family, friends, and lawyers pushing for this for 2 decades that got him his freedom, if you want to give credit to any media for his release, the HBO documentary was far more open about the miscarriage of justice than the Serial podcast ever was.
And please let's not forget in this that Hae Min still died and her killer has been walking free this whole time. Law enforcement needs to recifty this as their main priority. Adnan wasn't the only victim in this.
Not to split hairs, but it was a mistrial, not a "he's proven innocent." They even have the option to re-try him. It is entirely possible -- maybe even likely -- that Adnan is the killer, but they simply don't have enough evidence to convict.
The HBO series was made by his family so was not so much open as straight-up biased. Syed should go on trial again, I think it's highly unlikely he is innocent.
@@MichaelRicksAherne Yes, he really just got off on a technicallity. Most of the evidence still points to Adnan. It's really impossible to overlook Jays testimony. Jay was not just a witness, he participated in the crime. It's very damming. Unless Jay recants or it was discovered it was him, its quite convincing. Jay also knew where Haes car was, so either he is telling the truth or Jay would have to be the killer.
@@MichaelRicksAherne His conviction was vacated (for the second time, actually) . Luckily, in the US, you don't need to "prove that you are innocent," but are innocent until proven guilty. So the state has now the choice to prove him guilty, or drop the case. If they "simply" (as you say) don't have enough evidence to convict, then he remains innocent.

The prosecutors who withheld evidence should absolutely be held to account, and sentenced to serve behind bars at least the same amount of time Syed did. That's necessary so prosectors get the message, loud and clear.

After Adnan’s appeal was denied for the 2nd time, I honestly lost faith in the system to free him. But upon finding out he is actually free now, I’m surprised but sooo happy for him!! 😭❤
Prosecution has a month to request a new trial. However what gives hope is the prosecution seems to no longer feel confident in the conviction. Or they're tired of being dragged for their blatant racism and corruption in his trial and conviction.

It wasn’t actually because of the podcast. It was because They put a new law in place in Maryland where Adnan was from. The law was regarding individuals who were incarcerated as juveniles and spent a minimum of 20 years in prison. Candidates received a review of their case.

But the way I understand it, the podcast led to other professionals investigating it and uncovered some more dirt to help Adnan. Wonder if that made it into consideration when they reviewed his case.

I agree that we need to reform our justice system. Too many people are in prison when they did nothing.
Yeah okay, but that's one thing, but there's also the fact that Hae Min Lee's murderer (whoever that was) is still unpunished. The media spotlight over Syed's conviction overturned and focusing about wrongful convictions minimized the other victim of this case. Then again, she's been dead for as long as Syed been in prison, so it might not be as interesting for a headline.

@@timkneedler7289 I agree with you, I also see his point the police tend to make a decision of someone’s guilt and they stop looking and only focus on the person they have decided committed the crime and they twist things to fit their scenario.
I remember this case when it happened over 20 years ago and I followed it.
My only concern is: they never had any leads to anyone else but Syed. It would be different if they found some clues leading to an unknown potential suspect.
I feel like prosecutor’s who sentence innocent people or charge people with extra crimes and are found out for it, they should all be sent to prison. They should be made to go to prison for the amount of time which the falsely arrested individual was forced to spend in prison.

Agreed... Adnan's story is a tragedy that could have been avoided. They cannot give back 22 years of life and all that he could have experienced if proper actions had been taken rather than going after the brown person. I think it is very "interesting" that the new suspect's names haven't been released though at the time this happened, Syed's name was immediate media fodder, the first and only suspect announced. Is this yet another example of systemic racism?
How do you know Adnan is innocent? People just ignore Jay's testimony. Jay knew where the car was. People will say police planted the ideas in Jay's head. Jay is smart human being and planting ideas is rare and low probability. Try planting an idea in someone's head, it is difficult.

That means that lawyer is a shyster and those that protect him are shysters too. It also means the justice system has been shystered. If you don't reveal information that would have freed him, this means you purposely cost someone time in prison, that's called a crime in the justice system. Deceit ruins many a life in or out of jail.

This isn’t a closed case. He isn’t exonerated. Nor is he proven innocent. There are many questions regarding his motive and much of the evidence points to his guilt. Though I must admit Jay seems awfully suspicious with all the lying.
@@tioswift3676 nobody knows for sure if he's innocent or not, but you're supposed to sentence people when you think they're guilty without reasonable doubt. There was definitely a lot of doubt here so he should not have gotten found guilty.
you are aware that he was freed because evidence wasn't fully shared before the trial began, not that evidence completely exonerated him. also worth noting there was no focus on finding her actual killer (in the podcast)
Trevor is first of all of sound mind, and has true empathy, not in the sense that he absolutely feels others pain deeply, that I can not know, but he can perfectly position himself in someone elses shoes, so he can see an issue from different perspectives which gives him the ability to come as close to a just human and reporter as possible, of course he has biases, which are his opinions, like we all have, but he pushes them aside as a presenter of facts but then comes back with his deep insight. And how he is able to deconstruct complex ideas and draws you in to seek even more knowledge and understanding. He would be a great Professor who's students would actually learn from him and not just study for the grade. He should have three podcasts if he wants :)

Ronnie is spot on as always. You guys have really found your format with the other comedians on the show. It's a solid concept and it's really entertaining.
But notice how most if not all overturned convictions are always ONLY happening after the person has served a minimal of 20 years? You NEVER hear about a conviction overturned when the person only served 6 months or 1 year or even 5 years. These systems are ALWAYS only revisiting cases that are 20 years or older. And I think they do it because if they find a mistake, then these prosecutors can feel like they at least got 20 years out of the person. SMH
I think it's because it takes that long to get all parties involved out of office. Nobody wants to admit their mistake. They've been trying for years to get him a new trial and one certain attorney general kept blocking it. This year he ran for DA and lost. Mosby lost too and that's why she made sure to get it done. Look up Thiru Vignarajah and his involvement. There's also a documentary on HBO Max that explains it.
You never hear about it because it’s not as big of a deal as 20 years. It happens

I remember listening to the podcast on road trip from San Jose to LA, then Palm Springs for a week, for a conference about law. I didn’t want to leave the vehicle at the charging station just so I could continuously listen to the podcast.
I don't remember exactly where in the road trip I listened to it, but I listened to it on a road trip that started in San Jose and went through LA pretty early on. It wasn't for a conference about law though, just went on a road trip for a month for fun.

The original prosecution team should face criminal investigation for their (in)actions in this case.
The prosecutors case relied heavily on Adnan's background & religiousity... they assumed he killed her Because of "his honor" & since their arguments began at the bottom of the moral cesspit, the juror had a head start to convict him.

@@tioswift3676 in order to get a guilty verdict, there can be no reasonable doubt and has to be handed down by a unanimous decision from the jury. The evidence that was hidden provided reasonable doubt. If he is tried once again, with this evidence in play, he most assuredly can get a hung jury at the very least and be declared innocent as a result.
No, they used religion to explain the why. There was a lot of circumstantial evidence against Adnan. In my opinion he is guilty.
There was a line on The Newroom that has always struck me regarding Adnan's case. Our justice system isn't in place to lock up guilty people, but to make sure innocent people stay out of prison. It shouldn't matter if he is guilty. The question should simply be "Is there a chance is he innocent?". If the answer is yes, then he shouldn't be in prison.

The best podcast I listened to is In the Dark, season 2. It was the most amazing investigative journalism I have ever seen. In the end, Curtis Flowers goes all the way to the Supreme Court and is finally released. He had spent more than 20 years on death row. Do NOT look up the story before you listen. Let it unfold to shock your socks off. There is no justice in our system.
Serial brought awareness to the case, but it was the podcasts Undisclosed and Truth & Justice who helped pave the way to Adnan's release. 💕 Amazing what happens when prosecutors focus on justice rather than convictions.

Before podcasts it was AM radio late night, AM early morning, newspaper editorials, 60 minutes, neighborhood activists, public debates, street pamphlets, magazine articles, public citizens physically sitting in on the trials and hearings and reporting, FM radio late night, UHF & VHF stations, now all rolled up into some newspaper, some tv news, some talk shows, mostly social media and podcasts and occasionally a celebrity turned activist.

The same thing happened to Curtis Flowers. He was featured on a podcast called “In the Dark” and as a result of the evidence they uncovered he was released from prison. His story is riveting and I recommend that everyone listen to it.
