    Elvis' true love was gospel. As a teen he was a member of the East Trigg Avenue Baptist Choir led by the great gospel composer and Civil Rights gadfly W. Herbert Brewster. (Brewster said "Elvis' voice was the voice of Calvary, that suggested that God use him.")
    Elvis saw his rock songs as "bubblegum," much as he loved rock and roll. He warmed up for those performances (even on the set of Jailhouse Rock) by singing gospel. He unwound from his concerts the same way, late at night in his suite with his backup singers and celebrities and ordinary people who joined him. As his backup Cissy Houston said, "You can't get away from your roots. Everything Elvis did had that gospel flavor."

Elvis's "1968 Comeback TV Special includes a Gospel medley: "I Feel Like a Motherless Child", "Up Above My Head", Where Could I Go", and "Saved". Also there are Gospel sessions from Graceland, live impromptu glimpses with J.D.Sumner & The Stamps Quartet; songs like "The Lighthouse", "Lead Me", "Joshua Fit The Battle", "I John" as well as others, maybe depending how you choose. Again, THANK YOU, AND GOD BLESS!

    Thank you for sharing Captain Tom. A quick correction, Elvis’ career was from 1956-1977.
    There was simply no type of music that he couldn’t sing and sing well. For him to outdo the original artist was the norm. But, gospel was his true love. As amazing as this performance was, it doesn’t compare with the 1977 version.
    He was overweight and in poor health. When he sang praises to God, he gave his all. The 1977 performance is my absolute all time favorite. The power and passion is beyond compare.

    It is interesting to discuss what Elvis would have been without Parker. He still would have existed since he was already discovered at Sun and had large regional success. Tom was able to take it to the next level no doubt. It really is hard to say though. Would Elvis have stayed in music and not made the movies? I can see if that route was taken, there may not have been a need for a British Invasion. I think success would be relative. Who knows were Sam Phillips and Elvis would have taken things. Music might have been more edgy and exploratory. One can only wonder.

    J.D. Sumner, Ed Enoch, Ed Hill and Rick Strickland made up the amazing J.D Sumner And The Stamps Quartet. They performed live with Elvis from 1971 thru 1977 (the year Elvis died & JD sang at ELVIS funeral).

    From 1954 to 1977.. as for "if there was no Tom Parker there would be no Elvis" that's wrong. Parker wasn't around when Elvis had his first hit ."That's alright Mama" Elvis had already appeared for over a year on the Louisiana Hayride before Parker became his manager. Bob Neal whom was VERY connected to the music industry was Elvis's manager prior to Parker, The Hayride was shooting him to stardom, and the big record companies would have came calling even without Parker, . and as Parker said , Elvis would have been a star with any manager. It would be better if you had real knowledge of Elvis's timeline before reaching a viewpoint. Would his career been different? perhaps, perhaps not, maybe just the movie portion, But Make no Mistake, it wasn't Parker that made him a star. it was his unparalleled talent, charisma, and showmanship.

    • @orioles1971
      @orioles1971 Před 2 lety +1

      I am not sure you are correct that Elvis would have sky rocketed to fame the way he did without the colonial. I do know that Elvis should have fired him in 1968. If they would have done the Christmas show that the colonial wanted to do there would have never been a comeback.

    • @warrendelay
      @warrendelay Před 2 lety +2

      @@orioles1971 It wasn't in 68 that he should have fired Parker, if he had fired him in 1960 there would have been no need for a "comeback", it was Parker's lousy management signing movie contracts that made Elvis a joke to the music industry though the 60s. Again,,,, if not for 9 years of neglecting his Musical development Elvis would not have needed a "Comeback".

    • @orioles1971
      @orioles1971 Před 2 lety +1

      I don’t agree or disagree, but Elvis signed every contract himself so he is more to blame than the colonial. Elvis was not unhappy with the colonial in 1960 because of how well his career was going, but by 1968 Elvis should have come to his senses and fired him than.

      @warrendelay Před 2 lety +1

      @@orioles1971 I do agree with you, The question was would there have been an Elvis if there was no Parker? Note, Parker had no say in the music.

    Elvis was great in spite of Tom Parker. Yes he got Elvis to RCA.
    When Elvis came back from the army he slowly killed the genius in Elvis. When you killed the genius in an artist the body soon follows.
    From 1960 he kept Elvis from great songwriters so no more number ones. When Elvis in 1969 went to American Studios he had again 2 no one's. Then leech Parker kept him from them as well.
    Elvis detested his movies in the sixties.He became a joke in Hollywood What really frustrated and hurt him was that profits from his movies was used to make great pictures like Beckett with Peter O'toole and Richard Burton.
    Parker kept Elvis from world tours which he desired, singing to 2 presidents in the White House , and before the Queen of England.
    Elvis thrived on challenges,but from 1973 he sang in the same places over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
    Angelo Dundee did not make Muhammed Ali great.
    Elvis caused a stir wherever he performed in the beginning.
    Tom Parker said after Elvis's death that he was going to make Ricky Nelson greater than Elvis.
    Parker was a huge gambler and thus needed money. So why didn't he make another artist great.
    Elvis was great because of his multi talents which included his voice delivery, charisma, presence, sooo handsome, generosity great acting skills etc.
    Parker threatened great songwriters not to bring any songs to Elvis.
    How was it possible for others to become famous but greatest singer somehow needed that Parker.
    If Elvis could have had more challenges,scripts etc he would not have looked for escapism in prescribed drugs. Even the bodyguards who had written that horrible book said that whenever zElvis had a challenge then it was pure Elvis without drugs.

    These are blk. gospel songs so this prove he was not racist.
    How could Elvis be racist with blk. female singers?
    Whites during the late 60s had not one black back up singer but the ",Rat Pack". It was headed by Frank Senatra. Frank had included SAMMY DAVIS JR..
    So, again, he was not racist. He did treat his entire blk. back up singers fair.
    His blk.back up singers did speak well.of Elvis.
    It was stated by a black 👩 that Elvis was at his group 's party, Elvis asked her to dance with him..
    White men were not allowed to show lobe to blacks.
    Elvis always stated, he do not listen to how his fans feel.
    The colonial gambled 1 million dollars from Elvis's account. The colonial did not care and forced Elvis to remain on tour.
    Elvis tried but failed
    He was too sick to work.
    Elvis was broke. He only had 20 million Dollard left..
    Everyone did get mad at the colonial. ..because Elvis tried to work but. It killed him. He had over 12 different 💊. Pills.
    Elvis no longer had heard l am. mindfest.
