I love how Sam has been involved with the 401 and everything else. Looks like everyone has a new best friend in Sam. Thanks Sam for all of your help and friendship!
Yeah Sam is awesome!!
Heâs a great guy, glad to have him around!
Sam too is a very generous person!!!! Iâm very honored to have been blessed by him as wellâŠđâïž
Sam wants to see this plane fly again there's no way in hell it coulda flew again without all the support.
And plane
Is incredible how Sam became part of this rebuild in such an organic way. I like seeing him working in his plane, this has to make him really happy!
Went here to write the same thing. BUT Sam said NO ;-)
So I just binge watched this series as I came across it. I really gotta hand it not only Jason but also Sam. What a stand up guy to not only follow through with his word but also end up being a part of the project. The interaction between his first appearance and this is so different as their friendship grew. You never know who you're going to run into and where your meetings will take you. What started off as mere curiosity and interaction turned into something great! Wish you guys the best!
Jason, as a former F-16 Crew Chief i have a lot of experience with a Johnson bar. Anytime we removed panels on those fighter jets we were guaranteed to have several stuck screws. A good A&P mechanic will always have one of those in their bag of tricks. A great job by the entire crew!
$400 well spent, glad i brought it for this
We used a screw buster almost every day, yet never noticed anyone use a Johnson bar. Worked at an airline maintenance base.
I love how Sam is such a large part of this series now. This clearly means a heck of a lot to him. None of this would have been possible without him, so as a fan and a donor, thank you Sam.
The way Sam is smiling and obviously loving the fact that he is able to help with his plane rather than just handing it over is so awesome. Thanks for the ride along through this project with these great videos!
Reading through some of the comments on here has me scratching my head and slow-blinking the screen...... For those that couldn't figure it out, the two teams were comprised of Certificated A&P Mechanics. There are also a ton of comments about how "If they're not A&P's, they are not legal to be working on the airplane". To those individuals, you are 100% wrong.... A non-certificated individual absolutely CAN work on the airplane, as long as they are under the direct supervision of a Certificated A&P. Please stop with the armchair quarterbacking. It's obvious to those of us that ARE Certificated A&P's that you have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. Just stop.....
Your comments always make my day.
Experience is gained through doing. But I heard a lot of talking about the manual. Yes follow the manual and the process should flow to completion. We do not need to pick on people who are working, They are the ones getting their hands dirty. Keep up the great work you guys and have fun with this project.
The Janitor can be drafted in that hangar, to do rivet bucking.....it doesn't matter......every educated A&P Mechanic KNOWS what's on the line. Educated Redundancy is built into Civil, and low rung Commercial Aviation.
You can't do a high speed taxi, or a swing at Compass Rose, without revealing incompetence.
Admire the Volunteerism and grit, and if you love Acft, or just shy about it, show up at a small Airfield near you, you' ll find a place and serve a purpose
A little explanation about these rather young unprofessional-looking people at the outset would have saved a lot of ruffled feathers.
AMEN.....there's way too much inspection, and parts scourcing with provenance, to come. Projects like this require Labor, but this isnt Shade Tree Maintenance.....its a real deal lets make it happen effort. Godspeed and stop pissing on the Parade.
If you plan on getting both engines completely overhauled, it would probably be a good idea if you can trade them off for a pair of Zero timed engines since there are no log books available. You will have to "build" new log books from scratch basically There are several benefits to this: cost, History, Records and AD compliance. The spar strap compliance is going to be expensive, however with the wings off, after the Spar AD is complied with, you can replace the Fuel Bladder tanks.
Man, I just found your channel. its 2am and I just finished watching all your 401 videos. What a cool project. Great work to you and a big thanks to everyone helping keep this bird alive.

We need more of Jake. He seems like a great down to earth guy.
Jake is a great guy. Heâs been working with us at my company Mr. Dent for a long while now.
đđŒ
Agreed, seems like a guy that'd be fun to hang out with đ
I TOTALLY get the âI donât have the heart to remove the baby birdsâ thing my man. I even tried but theyâve been forced on me, lol. European Starlings are quite stubborn. đ€š But after learning a bit of their character from this experience interacting so closely, I donât mind them there at all actually. Theyâre funny critters.
I pulled a nest with eggs (that I couldnât see from the only angle available) out of the gooseneck attach point housing of my mobile classroom lab. European Starlings love those tucked away spaces for their nestsđȘș. They went right back in and made another one. So I just let them have at it and now Iâm carting around a group of baby Starling chicks all over the place. When I return, momma Starling is sitting on the fence waiting right next to my truck window and as soon as I disconnect and give her the all clear âGo get your babiesâ, she darts up into the nesting cubby and tends to the chicks. Anyone but me goes near that spot and the two parents go nuts. If itâs me, they just sit there on the fence next to me chirping softly. Itâs pretty friggin cute actually, lol. I use my borescope to check on them and admit to dropping a few mealworms into the open mouths with my long extension tweezers. Canât let the little dudes starve on road trips, right? I also made a protective cover for that opening for travel so they donât roam around and fall out. These chicks have probably travelled more miles that their parents and they donât even fly yet, lol!! đđ»đđđ»
Scott, this is an awesome story and thanks for sharing it. Hopefully they will grow up and fly away without coming back to build future homes...LOL. Anyway, it is an amazing story and I enjoyed reading about your baby bird adventures here.
Ooh, how sweet !đ
While I certainly understand the urge to do no harm just be aware that the Euro. Starling (and House Sparrow) were originally introduced from England. In their increasing numbers theyâre overwhelming other native bird species habitats namely the Eastern Bluebird and Chickadee by displacing them from their nesting sites, often eliminating their eggs and killing young chicks in the process.
Donât know what theyâre like in the US but Starlings are considered an invasive species here. They displace all our native birds and theyâre absolutely disgusting, disease ridden birds covered in lice and gods knows what else.
Love that Sam has been there since Day 1 and wants to be apart of this⊠Also for him keeping his word and not selling it to the other person trying to buy it in the beginning.
You guys are really great, I also need help with my private jet.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Don't rush it!
âTrust me, Samâs cheating somehow.â LMAO!!! đ€Łđ€Ł I really love seeing Sam becoming such a regular part of the channel. That dry humor and side eye smirk is classic. Itâs also pretty cool to see a real friendship evolve over the series. Impossible not to fully enjoy this stuff.

Itâs quite obvious that Sam totally appreciates being with you on these adventures and being a naturally important part of the whole process. I had the pleasure to know a number of folks with a very similar character and those kind of folks usually reciprocate as being the most loyal and dependable friends. Again as I had mentioned earlier, watching his natural progression from this sorta standoffish kind of guy in a sort of mini scandal in the beginning to now being so obviously enthusiastic and interactively comfortable, that whole âcrazy uncleâ, as you put it, adds such a grounded element to the content that compliments the whole experience. I canât WAIT to see the sort of follow up missions that will come once this thing is flying again. Samâs experience will certainly be a huge asset going forward. Just great stuff my friend and a huge thank you for such great content. đđ»đđđ»
I joined the rebuild rescue family with the first 401 episode and havenât looked back! Love the videoâs and Sam is a national treasure! What an absolute gentleman! So glad to see him get involved with everything and such a great group of people. Thank you for making it so enjoyable to watch

I was really enjoying watching this resurrection of this AC and now you partner the the Constitution shredding likes of Squarespace. Way to go!
You needed to introduce the team members. Curious of the backgrounds and experience with planes. Otherwise love this project and canât wait to see more.
We videoâd everything and then realized that we totally forgot that part đ€Šđ» Theyâll be back soon for the wing disassembly and weâll make sure to introduce them and give some background on the team members.

I think they all won they did an incredible job taking both these engines out. That's one helluva lot of work! Cheers to you all... If you didn't take on this project 401 wouldn't still be rotten away without a future. Looks like your on your way to seeing this bird one day fly once again.
This was pretty damn cool seeing all those guys and girl going to town on that 401 and the way they attacked their objective from slightly different angles both of which seemed pretty damn effective in the end. Hats off to all of them!
Sam's suggesting that the money should be shared out across both teams after his team won further clarifies that Sam is indeed a class act. I definitely think that was the right thing to do after all the effort and hard work everyone put in. That was a good call old boy... đ
Weâre lucky to have so many amazing people around usâŠ.
Looks like Sam (and everyone!) is having a great time.
As for the birds, maybe try owls with motion sensors that hoot. Those might drive you out of the hangar before the birds, though... ;)
Glad everyone got paid. That was the right thing to do for all of their hard work. Loved the episode!
T J is a true team player and leader đ
The ending is exactly why I watch this channel. Jason could have just kept the sponsor money for himself, he could have only divided it up and they would have gotten less. Nope, he gave each of these team members a really fair amount for their demanding work. Based on previous episodes, I could tell Jason was going to do something nice for these guys. He knows it is not just the right thing to do, but also what keeps them and their skills coming back to help with this amazing project. Paying it forward is a rare thing these days and it really brings me joy to see how this channel is always paying it forward financially and with man-hours. Few people give up their time and skills like this. Excited to see what comes next.
Hey Philip
They deserved every dimeâŠ. The craziest thing is through this action the very thing you mentioned is happening ! Paying it forward !
Stay tuned as the giving in this videos story had grown a few days later. All of these guys and gal are awesome. Weâre so lucky to have them with us đđŒ
He promised them that the winners would be recieving $5k and then after the winners had been determined he instead split the prize between all of them. And I don't think he could've just kept the prize money for himself because it was a sponsorship deal and squarespace didn't just send him $5k as a present.
I love seeing Sam so involved and how passionate he is about the project.

The cameraman are insane!!! Very good job Man!!
I honestly feel like a speed challenge for disassembling an aircraft engine is a bad idea đ I pray it goes well and nothing goes missing
It has to be completely overhauled first buy qualified mechanics and then reinstalled by the same or it won't pass inspection. Plus it didn't appear they were setting the woods on fire mostly using hand tools and not using power tools but a few times. Certainly respect your concern but there's a lot of technical things that must insure 100% safety and flyability.
Yeah so we bagged and tagged everything as it was removed. The four of us are professional mechanics from the 145 repair station and part 25 jet world, probably 60+ years of experience between us with AOGâs and quick turn maintenance. This was a full dayâs work and Im really proud of our team for pulling it off and not creating damage or additional work.

Another tip if you have a screw (phillips or hex) where the head is stripped or rounded: Add a generous blob of valve grinding/lapping compound to the tip of your driver bit, then apply heavy pressure as square to the fastener as you can and work at it with short twists till it breaks free.
Great job. And a tremendous amount of work. Getting those engines out. I think paying them all was a awesome gesture. And then can use them on the reinstall of them. The 401 is a great restoration. Thank you for sharing!
