    This thing flys around quite nicely with a forty something HP engine, has retractable landing gear, and will scoot along at over 110 mph, and has a stall speed down around 40 mph. That in itself is quite remarkable, But the first thing everyone wants to do is stuff a big heavy 150 to 300 hp motor in it. I bet this would be a super sweet plane with a lighter 85 to 125 hp engine in it. You start stuffing big hp in this thing, you start having to basically redesign the whole plane to carry that hp and extra weight. Then you start defeating the whole purpose for this planes existence.

    • @buzzypeterson1147
      @buzzypeterson1147 Před rokem +1

      @@MRxMADHATTER actually you’d be surprised. Not as light as you’d think by the time you are done. Plus the Regitity of carbon is a problem. I had a buddy build a wood core composite plane called a kr2. It was very successful in fiberglass. There were many built. The issue is he did his in carbon 100% and it delaminated because the carbon is so stiff. It’s very hard and will delam from the core. That is why cirrus uses very little carbon fiber in their planes. They are actually 90% regular fiberglass.

    • @MRxMADHATTER
      @MRxMADHATTER Před rokem +1

      @@buzzypeterson1147 I understand that. I used to build. the F-35 and other planes out of carbon. You can't just use carbon by itself. You have to have a framework to attach it to. Also, it helps to use the right resin when doing the lay ups and then cureing it in an autoclave. That strengthens the carbon quite a bit. Also you can go a little bit thicker without adding much weight. Also layups need to be done in vacum bags to remove the excess resin. Resin is the weak link in carbon fiber. I would not recomend a monocoque design in pure carbon. It can be done but that makes it heavier. To keep it light you need just the right combination of metal formers, stringers, bulkheads, etc. I know it would work if it's engineered right, because I've done it myself.

      @manofsan Před rokem

       @Major Chungus - bubble canopy sounds awesome, and probably not that hard to do. Current version looks like WW2-fighter canopy. They said they'll bring in electromechanical actuators for the landing gear, to replace hydraulics, since electromechanical is more reliable and can also be lighter. I think they also ought to try a self-feathering or variable-pitch prop.

    • @manofsan
      @manofsan Před rokem

       @Timothy Campbell - do you think that airframe can handle 170 knots? That "intake" configuration looks like it might be too draggy for that.

      @@manofsan Remember this is a hand built prototype we're Looking at. With only a 40hp engine in it and a fixed pitch prop the designers are getting 120mph out of it. With some drag reduction detail changes and a Rotax 915 with a constant speed prop I think it could do 200. And still keep it's 40 knot stall speed.

    I'm surprised that homebuilt planes like this don't use motorcycle engines. A 998 CC Honda engine produces 183 HP, and running at 50% throttle that should still be close to 90hp, with LOTS to spare. They're also really reliable engines, liquid cooled, electronic fuel injection, and lightweight. And it also runs on Premium pump gas - no leaded AVgas needed. Mind you, a pair of PBS TJ-100 jet engines tucked into the aft end of those tunnels would be sweet, and provide some redundancy in case one of them flames out.
