    I was about to buy one of these locks to upgrade my safe. Your video and below comments made me change my mind. What an unreliable junk! A safe lock should not be able to fail.

    Short story: I inherited my late father’s Liberty R-8 safe, that he purchased in 2006. As Executor of his estate, I was constantly in and out of that safe to distribute his coin collection, guns, his and Mom’s jewelry bequeathed to family members and to access legal papers. Safe has this exact same S&G 6120 lock; after transporting the safe from Tennessee to my home in Massachusetts, the lock worked exactly one time…and failed thereafter…with the safe in closed and locked position. After trying four batteries, I contacted Liberty; their service department was great. They told me that the e-locks are good for 15 (+or-) years….and I’m at the 15 year mark. They are sending me a brand new lock…no cost to me….but because the safe is outside of warranty, I’ll incur a locksmith charge. Still, I wish my lock had failed in the open position, as your video tutorial was excellent. I’m now thinking I can at least check the cables connected to the battery and the keypad inside the outside portion of the lock! Once again, just another reason “ya’ gotta love CZcams!” Thank you, sir, for taking the time to tear into this thing!

      My grandfather gave me his Liberty Franklin safe, he purchased in 2002. Has a Model 6120 and i'm in the same boat. I opened it with the master code the very first time, and then I put my valuables in it, and then closed the safe. That night, I went to get into it, and it wont open. The keypad will beep at me very rapidly for about 3 seconds after I hit the # key to change the code. Did this ever happen to you, or was it the actual lock not working? For me its the Keypad not accepting the obviously correct code.

      @@alanmilburn4590 I’m sorry Alan, but no, this did not happen to me. I think my problem began when unloading the safe from my pickup, wheeled it on a hand dolly down a set of ramps, and we may have let it down “harder” than we wanted. What I can tell you….customer service recommended that I let the safe sit for a while, and give the ‘computer’ time to ‘reset’, then to try again. When that didn’t work, they were great about sending me a new lock set, with a company-certified point of contact who was qualified to install it. While installation did cost me a couple hundred dollars, the tech indicated to me that these lock sets do have a ‘shelf life’, as do all electronics. But if you haven’t already, reached out to Liberty, please do. They were great in helping me through my issue. Good luck, and I wish you well, sir.

      @@captaincoyote1792 Luckily, I found a video that had my exact issue. So if anyone is reading this, and is having an issue with entering the correct master code, pushing the # to enter the code, and then the keypad beeps at you rapidly for about 3 seconds without the lock ever engaging or even making a noise as if to try to open; the answer is get a fresh DURACELL 9V battery. I was flabbergasted to find out that brands of batteries do matter. I had a fresh 9V Energizer in my keypad, and this issue was happening. I then replaced it with a fresh Duracell 9V and it opened right up.

    'Very good of you to make this video. My lock had exact same issue. After I watched your video I removed the plate that covers up the lock mechanism and holds the spring loaded bolt up. I cut a 1/8 inch diameter piece of plastic welding rod (from Har. Frate store) to just proud, 1/32 inch of the lock mechanism body. Then I reinstalled plate to lock body and it applied enough pressure to make lock work 100% of the time. Safe manufacturer Cann.. sent me a free replacement lock which I will install. I guess I have a spare lock now.. Thanks very much for your work paladinjme..

    The counterweight pushes that little nub back. It's supposed to remain in that state in normal use. It's a cheap attempt to prevent bashing it to release the solenoid. If you hit the safe, the counterweight bounces away and the nub clicks in to place where it locks the latch. If the spring on the nub is too strong, then the counterweight won't be enough to push it away. Easiest fix is trim or bend the spring to make it weaker

    I just opened mine up out of curiosity. That hole on the front where you mentioned a ball bearing might have gone. No ball bearing. That steal plate on the inside of the cover should cover that nub when it’s all back together. Maybe there is a way to adjust it. Good luck!!

    Hi Paladinjme, after watching your other video on the Variac upgrade, I got curious to see what other videos you've made, this one I watched all the way to the end even though I had absolutely no interest in a safe lock contraption what so ever, it most likely has something to do with how you easy you come across when you troubleshoot stuff, you have a knack to get people's attention and make mundane stuff look interesting, don't lose it.

    Sitting between the rear drill plate and the lock body is a small pin or ball bearing, if any force is applied to the lock body, the bearing falls away, effectively 'deadlocking' the bolt.

    @TenB33rs Před 6 lety

    I believe that the spring pin that your having issues with is the re-locking mechanism. its designed as back up security feature in case some one removes the cover plate of the lock. It may just be worn or it could be there was a ball bearing or something that should be installed on top of the pin before you put the cover plate on. Just a guess.

    • @paladinjme
      @paladinjme  Před 2 lety

      I know that's the default answer from the safe manufacturers, etc., but it's a silly and illogical assertion. Voltage is voltage and amps are amps regardless of the label or brand name. Duracells are great if you like batteries that are almost guaranteed to leak and potentially ruin your device.
