In Japanese the L and the R have the same sound
Yeah the 'L' and 'R' sounds are pretty similar in Japanese, so expect a few of those shenanigans.

Fun trivia, the Jolly Roger on Ace's back originally had a slightly different symbol for the crossed bars - specifically the Buddhist manji.
Given what that can easily look like, it was changed after the first use.

So Ace's Devil Fruit is the Mera Mera no Mi. Quite a lot of Devil Fruits have names that are onomatopoeia - in this case, mera is the sound effect of a fire starting.
The Arabasta/Alabasta thing has been mentioned in other comments, but just to clear up the (probably, idk Japanese) more correct translation is Alabasta as it is a reference to alabaster. You'll also see it much more often.
In Japanese "R" and "L" are interchangeable, same with "B" and "V". This is as Japanese does not have "L" or "V" and they are not naturally/easily pronouced in their language. It is similar to how some languages/accends can not pronounce "TH" and pronouce it as a "T" or "D"

Ace's introduction is a cool and wholesome moment in the series, and with his introduction, Luffy's background is flushed out just a bit more than what we saw in the Shanks flashback.

The reason why alabasta is sometimes pronounced and written as "arabasta" its becuase in japanese the R and L sounds are almost exactly the same so it switches between the too. most fans agree that the "original" intended spelling is likely to be arabasta becuase its the most common one.

Arabasta/Alabasta, Roguetown/Loguetown, Zolo/Zoro, along with several you haven't come to yet are all translation issues. It's just a matter of sounds that aren't necessarily available in Japanese.
For the ones listed above, the second one is what's commonly accepted.
In some instances, however, what's commonly accepted may be incorrect.
For an example that you already know, Mr. 2 Bon Clay may actually be Mr. 2 Bon _Kurei_ covering both the number and holiday agent names.
Live action has two big challenges - making Chopper and Karoo look good, and making the new Devil Fruit powers look good.
As Mikey did ask a few times I will tell him how long Ace and Luffy did not see each other. I don't think it really is a spoiler, but I will still put it down below.
Ace did set sail somehwat around 3 years before Luffy so that is about the time they did not see each other.

I remember watching episode 94 from CZcams with Spanish subtitles. I don't speak Spanish so I only understood very little, but still enough to get the big reveal. 😄One of my fondest One Piece memories, along with when I caught up with the anime and had to switch to reading the manga, around episode 370.
The alabasta arabasta thing is because in japanese r and l are pronounced pretty much the same, so a lot of times when they write made up names like that it can vary if they go with r or l
with OnePiece, it's crazy that a 100 episodes aren't even 10% anymore at this point
and Ace is a nice introduction to what kind of "scale" awaits you further into the GrandLine

the arabasta/alabata thing is due to how L and R sounds the same in japanese (and probably arnety different in japanese writing) so translators sometimes have probelsm with how some words might be pronoucned if they're made up. its also why in the early days some even translated luffy's named as RUFFY.
I think it has been 10y since I watch these epidodes for the first time, and whatching them again, they look even better

The official name is Alabasta, but both anime and original manga did type it with an r. The Japanese language doesn't have a distinct separation of the two letters, instead they have "ru/lu" which kinda covers both sounds/ R and L. Luffy's name in Japanese are the characters "ru/lu" and "fi", and if you listen carefully during your watches different characters will pronounce it differently, some will go with "Luffy" and some will say "Rufi".
Actually in the Japanese manga it is inconsistent. Oda spelled it "Arabasta" in volume 19, 20 and 82, but "Alabasta" in volume 62.
On an eternal pose in the anime, it is written "Alabasta".
You've finally officially met Luffy's big brother! I also really love the little hints like the huge appetite that give you a clue that they're family. You might also remember from the episodes where Koby and Helmeppo meet Garp that Garp also had a thing with falling asleep at odd times, just like Ace. And I love how happy the brothers are to see each other after years apart, plus the gag of the Straw Hats being amazed at how responsible Ace is compared to Luffy. And of course you've gotta love just how cool Ace's devil fruit power looks!
Fun fact: in the original Japanese Manga the White Beard Jolly Rodger had a swastika. This was later changed to a cross for reasons I hope are obvious.

Not a swastika, a manji. Manjis are good luck symbols in Asia. Needless to say Oda was forced to compromise to the censors for Worldwide audiences.
It was also a horizontal-vertical oriented one, not the diagonal oriented one used by the Nazis.
Cool reaction Mikey! The thing about Alabassta or Arabasta is the way of japanese spell "L" instead of "R". Like Luffy, sometimes translated like Ruffy. But I'm pretty much sure the main intention (being "R" or "L") is to looks like "Arab" because of the island paisage (and the people outfit).

Not only Japanese, Korean too. It’s R. In case of Japanese it’s Ra Re Ri Ru Ro. So all the foreign names or words with L, in Japanese will include R. Luffy is also written as Ruffy, but as the Ru is also in front it is read as soft R between L and R. And even D lol 😆 it’s like when you try to say English Do but then try to make it Roo, the mix.
Despite the fact that some may say a very strong Rrrr sounds for the coolness, (like some future characters) Japanese Ra Re Ri Ru Ro sound like something in the middle of L and R. So often in songs some say L instead of R to sound cool. So during translations it’s always confusing especially if it’s a foreign made up word, one may assume that L was meant there just because it sounds foreign. So there is no way to know unless the Author, in this case Oda-sensei says what word he referenced in the start. Or those who know the language or certain words can also probably say what was referenced and assume what letter may be used during romanization.
Love the hint oda gives you about aces power. Now we know his heat is why it didnt snow when he visited drum kingdom

concerning the "arabasta-alabasta" thing: its not just that the r and l are pronounced similarly in japanese, its that there IS no such thing as the letter "r" or "l" in japanese. japanese works with whole syllables like "ra" (ら), and "la" would just be the same thing. there is only ら, no la and ra. so without arabic letters like we use in english or any other western language, ら is just ら. the difficulty is with translating these sounds into english or german or whatever, because just from hearing ら, it could either be a "la" or a "ra". most of the times, when it comes to character names, either oda will write them down in arabic letters in the manga so everyone will know how a name is written, or the translating team of any given language will have to make up how to spell a name. thats where you get stuff like "ruffy" which is the german name for luffy. the translators just decided that the "r" sounded better for german readers/viewers and thats that.
i personally like the "alabasta" version more though, because im pretty sure its supposed to reference "alabaster", the name of a white rock/pigment.
So how did the German translation work in Dressrosa? or... do they say Rucy? 😅 I guess that would be a little difficult when there's a sign on his back lol

Alabasta & Arabasta are both good translation. As L & R are the same letter/character/sound in japanese it is both a reference to "Arab" culture, from which a lot of inspiration is taken & "Alabaster" stone, famously used in northern africa and egypt for sculpture (as well as many other places tbf)
It is supposed to be Alabasta but since there is no 'L' in the Japanese language, they use the 'R' sound to substitute for it. The famous example is the official Viz translation still, to this day, calls Zoro "Zolo" in the manga.
Taking some notes is definitely a good idea. You've only scratched the surface of the characters and factions involved in the overarching story. It becomes hard to keep track of everything later on, as there are more and more moving pieces the further you get into the series.
Just to clarify the Whitebeard division commanders aren't really ranked by power or anything. It just means they have their own subdivision of ships and crew they command under Whitebeards flag and are a force to be reckoned with.
Oh fuck yeah! That ending theme with Chopper is called "Fish". One of the great endings for One Piece... I don't care what anyone says.

Usually when things are spelled inconsistently in anime translations, the translators simply don't know the correct spelling. Take the One Piece currency for example: the correct spelling is unquestionably Belly (it's sometimes even legible on bank notes if you pause), but early translators only had the katakana ベリー (Berī) to work with, so they have also spelled it Berry/Beri/Beli. And when things are written in katakana (one of three Japanese writing systems), it usually implies the approximate pronunciation of a non-Japanese word, so direct romanization doesn't work either.
Alabasta/Arabasta, however, has been spelled inconsistently even within the Latin alphabet. Occasionally that happens too, though not as often.
A somewhat useful advice for avoiding confusion is to pay attention when the Latin alphabet is used somewhere else than the subtitles. Like the bounty posters, for example. The Wiki would also be very helpful with spellings, as it usually cites its sources, but you DON'T want to go there until you're up to date!
It's going to be interesting seeing logia and zoan powers in the live action.
Three comments. First of all, one of the reasons I love your reactions compared to others is that you shut up and pay attention mid-thought when you have to. When I watch other reaction videos, I'm screaming at the screen "if you were paying attention instead of talking to the camera, you'd have seen that!" Sometimes, you just cut-off in the middle of a sentence to pay attention, and that's awesome.
Second, about Japanese "R" and "L"... As has been mentioned, they often get confused and switched around. Japanese has no real "L" sound, and it makes for some weird translations. For a long time, we manga readers were calling Mr. 2 "Bon Kurei" instead of "Bon Clay" due to this. There will probably be some other issues like this as well further on down.
Third, the anime added a lot in these past three or so episodes that wasn't in the manga. For example, Luffy never actually left Nanohana, and neither did Chopper. I kind of like the way the anime added those scenes in, to be honest, though. (Which is weird, because I'm typically a manga purist.) There's some other examples, but I won't point those out for at least a few episodes, just in case I'm spoiling anything there.

Oh, and side note... The skull and vertical crossbones tattoo (Whitebeard's Mark) on Ace's back was also changed in the anime. It used to be a manji (a religious Bhuddist symbol), but was changed in the anime due to the resemblance to a swastika. (They are two different things in different orientations, though.) Later on in the manga, it was changed as well to the crossbones mark shown in the anime, presumably for the same reasons.
In the manga Ace did a certain thing then left here. He's a very popular character, so the anime decided to give us some filler episodes with him, and he still does the certain thing and leaves at the end.
The english "-er" or "-or" sounds at the end of the words doesn't exist in Japanese so it has to be pronounced phonetically somewhat close to that. So it becomes "arabasutaa" with "-aa" on the end instead.
Think of it like how a British person would pronounce "brother" as "bruthaa", but with a thick Japanese accent.
There's also no "S" sound. You have to go with one of these instead - "sa", "shi", "su", "se" and "so".
The "-su" would be the closest choice, and the sound can be reduced to a shorter sounding "-su" further to make it sound almost like a short "-s".
(Like, Asuka is almost reduced to "Aska" when pronounced).
So,
Smoker becomes"Sumo-kaa".
There's also no R or L distinction. Instead, there's a sound somewhat in the middle of it. It usually depends on the person if he pronounces it closer to R or closer to L sound.
It's actually similar to how the tip or your tongue touches roof of your mouth near your teeth with when pronouncing the english "L" sound. But now move the tip a bit further inside your mouth and kinda soften it a bit to make the Japanese R. If you end up making the Indian accent "D" instead it means your tip went too far back.
(look up the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for more info).
That's how Alabaster became "Arabasutaa". The country name is a reference to the name of a rock/mineral used for different things in Egypt. And the country has different Egyptian motiffs to it. It's just how a Japanese person pronounces the word Alabaster and that's it.
Saying Alabaster as Arabasta is the same as saying the english "master" as "masutaa". But in the end, you can pronounce it however you want, as long as people understand what you're trying to say.
So languagewise the L particles and r particles (ra,re,ru,ri,ro) are pronounced the same. When learning japanese they often teach r rather than l as it sounds closer. However the original word may differ example zorro and zolo. alabaster is the translation and meaning as it is in Katakana but the pronunciation and writing is arabasuta. Luffy can also be Ruffy. Similarly there are not many W partical any more. white Beard was another famous pirate IRL

So long story short, R and L are actually the same letter in Japanese. Some subtitles translate it as "Arabasta", some as "Alabasta", both are technically correct, though the "official" Viz translation went with Alabasta (though they also went with "Zolo" instead of "Zoro" so take whatever they say with a grain of salt). Personally, I grew up calling it "Arabasta" so it'll always be Arabasta for me.
yes, i cannot stress enough that you need to take notes, you never know when something or someone from the past will appear in the story again and there are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of characters, some minor, some major.
The Reason for the Mistranslation is because the R and L Sound in Japanese are the same.

I don't know if episode 100 is anything special (that can be difficult to plan with the addition of filler episodes), but Oda did specifically arrange for chapter 100 of the manga to be the last chapter of the East Blue.

Believe it or not Luffy mom has been “shown”, yet we as on caught-manga readers are just as lost because it has never been fully stated whom she is as in to only theorize with a ludacris theory with one you’ll find out in about 5 arcs later
The L and R are the same letter in japanese, so translation is always up to interpretation. This problem will come up a lot. In the case of Alabasta/Arabasta, it's probably derived from alabaster, so the L is better.

The really neat thing about the Alabasta/Arabasta issue is that both ways are each a play on words depending on which you go with. Alabasta references the word alabaster which is a white colored fine grained mineral (gypsum) often found in deserts. Arabasta, on the other hand, has the word “Arab” which refers to the Middle East, a region that was the main inspiration for the island. So either pronunciation is correct and if anyone corrects you for choosing one over the other, that person is ignorant. (If you want to pronounce it more like the original Japanese pronunciation, la or ra could really be a very soft da sound, the tip of the tongue hitting softly just behind the front teeth “ah-da-ba-sta”. But if you say it like that, people will call you a weeb, so there’s really no winning here 😂)

Yes welcome to another "OMG" moment: ACE THE BROTHER!!!
And we`re just in the second arc.
There is no R or L in Japanese. Just a single sound that's kind of in between them. For example, if you listen carefully, there's a noticeable "R" undertone in how they say Luffy, and a noticeable "L" undertone in how they say Zoro. This is most noticeable when they say each other's names, actually. Zoro pronounces it much closer to "Roofy", and Luffy pronounces it much closer to "Zolo".
The choice of which to use when romanizing Japanese words is pretty arbitrary. Doubly so for proper nouns. Most of the time they'll settle on whatever sound best. We can infer that the country was probably named after alabaster in this case, so Alabasta is probably more correct? It also sounds better.
In Japanese they can't pronounce "L" so "R" and "L" is basically the same almost everytime.
Like Usopp once said "watashi wa Eru des" and by "eru" he means "L"

The Japanese language doesn't have an "L" phenome. So there's always some issues with translating words with L and R sounds into English. Hence why "Alabasta" becomes "Arabasta". But it is pronounced "Alabasta" in English
