The story of how Simon Petrikov became the Ice King so tragic and adds so many new dimensions to his character. He lost his mind, his fiancée, his humanity, everything, because of that crown. Even so, a part of him is still looking for his "princess".

And just like that, everything we thought we knew about this show changed forever.
I love that moment is so strong that a non-insignificant percentage of people that til the reveal of the crown to actually process that line
Ice King is a more extreme version of Old man McGucket
True, when McGucket regained his sanity he still had his son and some of his friends to reunite with.
Even if Simon regains his sanity he'll find that everyone that he has ever known is long dead, there are barely any other humans around and the world is like a crazy person's day dream compared to his time.
It might be kinder to stay insane.
Fun fact: this predates the McGucket twist by almost _3 YEARS_ (Dec 5, 2011 for this, vs. October 27, 2014 for _Society of the Blind Eye)._
In fact, Adventure Time was already in the middle of Season 4 when Gravity Falls _PREMIERED_ in June 2012 - that's how large the time gap is, and how quickly AT was airing episodes until season 6 (four seasons from April 2010 to October 2012 - just over _2 ½ years!)._

I love how they lull people into thinking Holly Jolly Secrets is going to be a typical early seasons randomness episode of little importance, a silly little pseudo Christmas episode, then *bam*. Redefines not only everything Ice King does in the same episode, but the entire show so far.
Phil, the naked humanoid background character you've asked about, is from the episode "City of Thieves" (Season 1 Episode 13). He also appeared as one of the Naked Old People in "Blood Under the Skin" (Season 2 Episode 4).
And here we are. You will never see ice king the same ever again.

Ice King is such a nuanced and interesting character. We all knew there was more to him then what's on the surface, but it went so much deeper then u could ever expect.
Finally we have reached Simon petrikov I love this episode so much it made me feel completely different about ice king before this episode every time I saw him I thought how goofy and funny he is but after this episode i just felt sadness
The Christmas Special, the moment that showed that Adventure Time was a lot more deep than everyone thought.
So Ice King's actions have been put into a whole new light as of Holly Jolly Secrets. Since his obsession with Princesses is revealed to have been him desperately searching for his former love Betty and failing to do so. Plus, his age needs to be taken into consideration as well. As of the two parter, we have no idea how old he is. But it is clear that he's an old man who is suffering from memory lost. Making him someone who only has the memory of searching for his beloved Princess.
Also, this now raises a question regarding the crown. As we have confirmation that Simon had bought it, but as the ice King he stated to have made it from stolen magic. So why is that the case? Is it connected to the visions he saw? Well you just have to keep watching to find out.

Where the story truly begins
Tom Kenny is so good. I've only known him for his goofy roles, such as Spongebob or the Ice King, but there's so much emotion and desperation in that Simon scene and, as you can already guess, it's far from the last time you'll see it.
The segment with Ice King after the Simon reveal just goes to show how far into madness he has reached, when he can't even realise the bigger meaning of that reveal than him used to wearing glasses
was looking forward to you getting to the Simon reveal. Knew you'd be psyched about that

And thus, Adventure Time went from good to great, and the 2010s Animation Renaissance kicked off for for real.
Ice King's true identity was the best revelation I've ever watched since Gravity Falls.
Such a big moment and in the Christmas special to boot. It truly was a wild revelation watching as the show aired and not realizing the full ramifications and lasting impact of this reveal. Pay close attention to how Simon in his crazed Ice King state is treated from this point on. Love the vids!
It's interesting that most reaction channels missed the obvious reference to Dementia in Ice King's personality. Doing some crazy shit, commiting acts that would be considered crimes when most times he just takes them as games, I mean he even forgets about his secret tapes when Ice King mentioned them as his, minutes before Finn returns them

“Drama bomb” was the right way for Jake to describe it, the whole episode was played as a fun “making fun of Ice King” situation and then suddenly, BOOM! The Simon story just drops down on you, leaving you shocked!

To be fair I don't think Finn ever got "the talk" and is just in shock that she's "missing something" He's literally the only human in Ooo so he doesn't have experience with these things.
After this, Finn's view on Ice King changes. He tries to be a bit more understanding with him because he used to be a normal guy named Simon who was corrupted by the crown. He's still Simon somewhere inside.
But wait, my dude, because there are more truth bombs about to drop soon and it will blow your mind!

As a kid I didn't realize that Finn maybe saw a forbidden fruit for the first time and when I rewatched the series I felt weird lol

Maybe marceline said she didn’t have friends because she thought her only friends, Finn and Jake, didn’t show for the music section

He wasn't there for that scene, not even in a sucked-soul form; he flew away after soiling his tunic ("Completely by choice!"), and judging by that, I think it's safe to say he wouldn't be anywhere near them anymore.
There's a chance that Finn could've kept the recording, and Ice King could've heard it during any of the times he's broken into their house. But I think there's a better explanation:

The first Graybles episode even establishes that she _can_ sing (at least, well enough for one contestant to say she's "definitely gonna win" the talent show, and for another group to rip her off before she can properly perform it); she could've spread the song.

In some ways it’s worse. McGukett at least knew the Memory gun would affect him. Simon just put the crown on for the laughs and it whacked his brain.

Out of all the characters in the show, Ice King is the most tragic character
Idk if you already know this yet, and I think this is more of a warning than a spoiler. I also don't know if you'd already seen this ep yet, but there's a whole episode with literally just about SPIDERS. BIG AND SMALL SPIDERS, and I think you're really, really, REALLY NOT gonna like it.
I'm not afraid of them but there are definitely a lot of unpleasant scenes there. I don't think it's a plot heavy one or you're gonna miss anything of you skip it, so if you like, you can definitely skip that one. Just for your own mental health's sake 😅
