- I knew I wanted to include terrestrial plants in some way when I designed this aquarium, but I wasn't sure how. There was no way I could have them out of the top of the display itself. I had to get creative. That's when I came up with the idea to create what I'm calling a Hydro-Sump. A solution that uses hydroponic or riparian plant growth to filter the aquarium. That way, the system will remain easily maintained because of the benefits provided by these plants.

I'm really pleased with how this is coming together and I can't wait to show you all what's next! It's going to be crazy! Enjoy and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!
Also, just wanted to remind You that you can get 10% off ALL hardscape and plants at buceplant.com (non-affiliate code).
You should get hermit crabs what do you research first
You know what would be sick? If Serpa and Bamabass did a sort of channel crossover. Maybe they could even do crossovers with other “aquatics” based CZcams’s
Please do a bioactive for Western hognose snake. They are a begginers pet that need low humidity
It would be dope if you could collab with the CZcamsr “cowturtle” and completely deck out the eel pit

Hi Tanner, one of the reasons why the stain may have come out much darker is due to sanding with a different grit between the two pieces. (Or if you didn't sand them at all) the difference between the open pore sizes in the wood can be much different. Sanding both pieces with the same final grit will help make sure the open pores in the wood are the same size which will ensure the same amount of stain gets absorbed. Hope this helps!
As someone who will have to sand, stain, and seal a deck for the first time in my life, I appreciate you sharing this! You just made me a little less n00b! ❤
I never knew that, thanks for sharing this fact with us!
ugh, the cliffhangers are killing me 😂😂😂
wanna see the 🐟🐠🐡🐠🐟
I know right? I'm tormented, but I also understand why it has to be thins way to keep the channel successful and make the workload manageable. All that said, Graaargh show me happy fishieees!!
It's about the journey, not the destination haha @@Heterogeneity 🌈
I like the series you’re doing here, especially how it takes place over a longer stretch of time than just one week! You should do more of this style of video in the future
I agree. As much as I dislike the cliffhangers and as much as I want instant gratification (lol) these ten to fifteen minute updates are preferable to Tanner burning out or longer videos happening less often. It would be helpful to get a full series edit once all the component videos are released.
So cool! Love it! A suggestion I have is maybe to do a build for Western Hognose snakes, as they are great beginner snakes and the video could be very educational. I know this is a big ask, since you rarely get new animals, but I thought I’d just put it out there. Also they are sooooo cute!
I love how they look like they’re about to “Oink!” at you when you look at them😂
I agree, he could even collaborate with Snake Discovery if he does.

Good idea if it wasn't such a wet environment, they'd get scale rot in such a humid environment
I think a garter snake setup would be really cool since they like to hunt in aquatic environments. Do a little riverbank setup and stock it with some feeder fish
03:50 yeah you stained the same wood but not the same surface or orientation of the wood, so a colour difference is easily acquired then. although I have to say, the popping effect of those doors is nice
I was gonna say, the slight contrast might not have been intended but I like it.
Ulitimate in sustainability, this will exponentially reduce your maintenance, but also water conditioners, additives, the materials needed for filters and filtration, and it's so healthy for the fish. To boot it's fecking gorgeous, you are an amazing influence on the hobby. I'm so glad you stuck through it, it must have been so rough starting out! You've come do far, just, amazing!
I have a similar thing over my aquarium too :D I want to included house plants in my tank for filtration but don't want the plant roots to interfere with the look of the aquarium. So I have a small overhead hydroponic tank on top for house plants feed by a pump. I wasn't sure how well it will work but this video validate it. Thank you!
I love at the end of builds when you have some nice glamour shots of the plants and animals. I know it's probably a lot of work to edit the extra footage, but I do enjoy seeing the cool angles of the build.
LETS GO A NEW SERPA DESIGN VIDEO DROPPED!
Your work has inspired me! Currently turning my Crestie’s bioactive setup into a full-scale naturalistic habitat. Thank you so much for everything you do!
The hydro-sump is a pretty clever idea! something I haven't seen done before in a separate system! 🔥
I have a feeling I've seen something like it before, but I really can't remember where, when, or in what context. Regardless, it's certainly unusual, at the very least.
@jic1 reef hobby. The sps display drains water to a hidden sump, then water is pumped up to a display sump containing macroalgae/soft corals before draining back into the main reef. It allows for a display sump with a consistent water level.
@@danielsmith336 The more I think about it, the more I think it was some kind of small mangrove in the sump; but I think you're right, it was a salt water tank.
It’s essentially aquaponics which is super cool :D
Bog filters, too
I love how Tanner can never resist adding more plants!
I live in sw Fla and I always see plants I recognize in your videos, but there are some I did not know grew in water. Great piece of living art as always.
Emergent plants are my favorite addition to my freshwater tanks- even my goldfish tank is fresh and clean thanks to all of the plants in and out of the water.
Some aquatic floating plants like mini water lettuce or red root floaters could be added to hide the baskets from view. There would be no need to keep thinning them to let light penetrate to lower plants allowing their roots to form a dense network adding greatly to the bio-filtration. Floating species do a better job than either fully terrestrial or fully aquatic plants because of the water/air interface.
I haven’t seen a Madagascar Lace “Sword” since I first started in the hobby years ago! As a young teen I had several in a tank with Melon Swords, another difficult plant to locate nowadays. The lace swords are considered a challenge to grow as bits of detritus can easily get caught in the leaves and start to deteriorate. Keeping the leaves clean and algae free along with good lighting helps ensure success.
I appreciate the plants so much! I watch the vids because of how artfully and practically you insert plants into all your builds. The plants are my bias.
Fun series of the Jungle Aquarium, love the progress of the hydroponic segment!
I’m really looking forward to the finished product, you should be super proud of this one! 🇦🇺❤️
So cool! What an intriguing way to still include terrestrial plants. I can't wait to see the full build and I appreciate getting to see the more intricate details of each chunk. Even though I'm also anxious to see the fishes. 😊
Very cool idea to have the tank cycle through a riparian tank. Great job.
That’s really cool! It would be hard for me to resist adding fish/inverts to that sump
Same, shrimp in there would be sick!
Yeah, a wild cherry shrimp colony up there, for added interest, function, and as a live food supply 👍
What a cool implementation! Pragmatic, but still beautiful, with your plants on full display. I can't wait to see what you do with this setup next!
Really loving the multi part series, the tank is looking amazing so far!
I love the heights of the tall plants. They look so great when you get fish swimming in and out of them.
This is such a masterpiece! I like your videos a lot and I admire your talent. I am putting together an idea of my own project to keep plants, fish and reptiles composed from all of your ideas. You are such an inspiration to me.
Nate: “You good?”
Tanner: “I’m good.”
Narrator: “He was not good.”
I also appreciate the utilitarian juxtaposition in the sump. Wild growth peeking out, out of all those straight lines.
Tanner, love your work and your care for animals. Thanks for sharing it all and also showing your mistakes.
I really like the different colour look on the doors.
So cool. I would love to do something like this. I set up my first tank 6 months ago and just stuck a bunch of house plants in those little plastic cups you get from aquatic plants, and hung them around the back of my aquarium 😂
I miss when you did the cool themed aquariums like the ghost shrimps ghost ship and the carved stone figurehead in a paludarium. Those are some of my favorite by far. Love the crazy miniatures that people make into aquariums and terrariums but I dont feel like they are built to suit any of the animals. Would be cool to see you go for the same aesthetic but with the proper care for the plants and animals.
Loving the series, excited for what’s ahead
Awesome video! Love the idea of putting land plants in a sump!!! It would also be really cool to maybe have a few frogs or a species of siren or amphiuma up living in the sump
I have had a filter like that for 9 years now. Best filters you can have!!!
loving this new format, tanks are looking awesome!
Such a tease😂, man that looks awesome, and a fantastic propagation area
Holy crap I’ve been having an idea to do an aquaponic shelf set up to connect to my tank some how and you killed it.
So beautiful another amazing built .
I love when you describe your reasoning and show the changes you’ve made. So cool!
You have never-ending ideas that show more and more of your talents, thank you so much for sharing them with us!
Love this solution for evaporation
That's a neat idea! It looks really nice!
incredibly cool setup
Absolutely gorgeous 💖💖
Tannins affect pH as well. Adding or removing a lot at once can shock the plants or worse.
Such an amazing creative idea! It looks beautiful and will add so much practically to the setup as well as aesthetically! Honestly the point of propagating plants is so spot on, this is a plant paradise! Moving water, LECA, and plenty of fish poop lol! I would also be merrily excited about that as well! The more I think about it the more excited I get about the possibilities 😂❤
I'm so excited for this build! It's gonna be so cool to see the fish in! I've started putting plants above the rim in every tank and I love it!
Beautiful! I'm ready for the fish now.😉 Gina
Beautiful and well thought out as always! But I would love an update on the Vampire crab paludarium!
I’m totally doing this next!
can't wait for the next update!
Really nice those aquariumbuilds over time. Interesting!
Better and better, it's so wonderful. Thanks for taking us along. Peace.
Wow looking forward to seeing the finished product.
liked the video before the starting ads ended because i knew it was going to be good!
Nice setup! But i still prefere the old one. That one looks like a dream setup. hope youcan make another one in the future.
As always, a great build!
This really bogs me down, in the best way possible
Thanks for the update, Tanner! I look forward to your newest video all week.
That look amazing ❤
Love The Hydro Element !!
Stunning!
Love the vid and build thanks man!
The Salamanders are happy to see the years of experience coming through
Leca looks so much cleaner than my lava rock
like damn this stuff is dusty xd
What a cool idea!! 😊
Super vidéo, merci à vous!
I wish his videos were longer 😔😕...
Really awesome!!
beautiful as always, this and the aquarium build would compliment each other so well!!
I've watched the definitive guide to growing house plants in an aquarium... hoping we can see more creative ways to attach plants to surfaced materials, aquarium glass etc etc
Yoo first, great video, it’s amazing how u added the terrestrial plant area on top. Seems like a lot of work but paid off in the end.
Add Dafnia or other micro critters into the sump. As they overflow, they will prolly just add extra feed to your aquarium.
5:20 serpdesign looks likes somehow reverse robbing a house lmao
With your recent experience in saltwater, I would love to see a brackish setup, either aquarium or paludarium
The channel aquarium domain just posted a video last week about how he’s going to be adding basically just what you did to a bunch of his large setups. You should check his videos out he’s got a good handful of huge fresh and saltwater setups and makes them all himself.
"Clearly he was not good" 😂😂
I love the video insanely awesome. I don’t know if you can get around to it but you need to make another massive Vivarium like the 600 gal, and it would be really amazing if you could make it Amazon river or Amazon Rainforest themed
Awesome design! I'm wondering how easy the pruning and maintenance of the plants will be with the space available above. Although you could always make it taller later.
I always end up wanting more room whenever I build a top on something 😅 The claustrophobia sets in fast. Lol
Cool design! So the water is pumped from the sump, up to to the bog filter, and then overflows/returns back to the sump?
I will say that i love overhead filters, but they have caused most of the floods i have experienced. I think with your design, the sump should probably run dry before water makes it over the top, in the case of clogged overflows. Which is good. You want to replace the pump, not the flooring!
Nice set-up and video!
Suuuper cuuuul!
i love this content
Wow, wow, WOW!
love the vids
Love, love, love ❤️ 🥰♥️
How do you pay for all of your water? I live in a desert and water is expensive, so I 100% watch your channel in baffled amazement. I love your work. Thank you
Nice
So cool, maybe next time you can create a tank for a giraffe?
I was asleep I am here yippee
You could add a school of cardinal tetras here in the setup with no other tank mates. I think it would be a very good setup for them.
Bravo!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
10 minutes? I need more than that!!
Great system, Tanner; both the tank and the sump look neat by now. Just one thing: won't the silver dollars eat the underwater plants?
Would you consider doing any livestock up there? Depending on your temperatures for that tank, that would be a perfect set up for Sword tail newts
this is an awesome idea but why no eggcrate or flo crell under the bricks to disperse weight and prevent scratching?
You should do a land hermit crab setup!
Tanner, will you build a steampunk inspired aquarium? I think it would look so cool and it would be interesting to xee what techniques you use to make it fish safe!
Super 🆒 😆👊🏽
