As great as the Supremes were, they are not the first. The Shirelles are from 1957 and the Bluebelle were contemporary with Supremes including Cindy Birdsong!
This was a great era to grow up in. The cars, the music, the news when it told the truth, leaders who respected each other, safe schools, when kids could be kids, family times, television with 13 channels, but those few channels had more variety and talent than the 200, 300 or whatever is out there today, and of course, The Supremes. Baby, I Loved It!
As I write this, Lamont Dozier has passed away at age 81. My heart is heavy and I feel immense loss, but will be forever grateful for his beautiful songs and the mark that he left in the world of music. Rest on Lamont! They don't make 'em like you anymore!! I was born in the 70's but my father listens a lot to The Supremes, The Drifters, Patty Page, Engelbert Humperdick, Frank Sinatra so I know most of their songs and guess what it is what I prefer to listen...an era whe music is a proper music:)
Diana Ross was known as one of the top 10 most beautiful women of her day. This was in the 60's. Diana and the Supremes broke ground, paved it with their talent. They helped to build bridges, not shatter them. The Supremes will always be an inspiration to me, as a kid, in an alley, listening to a radio, at 11 years old, loving their voices.

Florence...wow! So regal and elegant here, visually, she really stands out in this video! Mr. Gordy could have easily turned her into a solo star as well, but he and Flo had an unfortunate falling out.
Motherfucking Maki Me too, I thought she added so much additional appeal to the group. She did get a $50,000 settlement a year before she died from a blood clot, but all those years of depression and poverty took a terrible toll on her.

To each his own. I didn't make it past 1:29. I think it was the scary hair-dos, and hearing yet again that compared to the other two ladies, Diana's voice was annoyingly nasal such that I always wondered how she always had the lead.
