Totally agree. Michael McDonald with the Doobies had some great hits and really showed the Doobies music versatility and vocal harmonies which messed incredible well with MM's different/creative musical style. There is a Doobie Brothers concert video on CZcams from 1982 in California. It was great and Michael McDonald was there with all of their biggest hits together, But the biggest roaring ovations still came for the Classic Doobie original hits. ALL Doobies, original and newer are all incredibly gifted musicians and singers. Big shout of appreciation to the Covid 19 home-based performance of BLACK WATER, it made my day.
So MM came later when the original singer, Tom Johnston, started having troubles with his voice as well as a horrible case of pancreatitis. This was from a grueling touring schedule. this was before Michael McDonald. The opening riff is what most people refer to the tom johnston sound (after guitarist and singer Tom Johnston). Michael was hired to fill in for Tom after Tom developed Ulcers that required hospitalization that lasted several years. During this time the sound shifted from guitar oriented sound to a keyboard/piano sound. garnering new fans but also alienating some core fans. in 1987 johnston returned to the group and Michael left. They released the first album Cycles which includes the great song, The Doctor. You should check it out.
Tiran Porter is the Bass player, an African American. You will like "The Doctor" from the late 80's when they reunited with the original singer. Great Song.
"And the steel rails lie cold and hard for the miles that they go down". Yes, I think it is saying that, without love, life is just a mechanical process that grinds on.
These bands were all great musicians, no studio artists BS they could sing and play like crazy. Thank you for introducing this to a new generation. Great job
Holy crap!!! I just looked and you haven’t done “Listen to the Music” by The Doobie Brothers !! Geez! That’s a HUGE one- please react to it- it’s fantastic too!❤️💛🤘🏼✌️
The Doobie Bros is one of those groups that basically have 2 fan bases, you have those that like the albums before MM got there then you have the base that only likes the albums MM was on, nobody is wrong just a matter of taste but there’s no denying that their sound changed once MM got there.
There's a third fan base -- those of us who liked both eras, and don't see why the other two have to keep tearing each other down all the time. :-) The McDonald era was different, to be sure, but it's hardly accurate to say he "ruined" the band, especially when you look at the history of the group and the things they were going through at the time.
If you're that knocked out by harmonica look this one up: "Bonnie Raitt - Runaway (Live 1977)", as entertaining as it gets as well as one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
Everything in this track is just perfect. The conga percussion is the salt and pepper that flavor it beautifully. The Doobie Brother's are great, I'm so glad they were able to channel these vibrations of love from the universe into such uplifting inspirational body moving grooves to share with the world. ☮️💟🎵
I love watching you respond to music - so genuine and heartfelt. I was born into this era, with my parents as young hippies in their 20s. It's a time that really can't be expressed in words. It was close to another dimension. Then it ALL went sideways!! Badly. The 80s were just a slow-mo trainwreck (imho). The drugs got harder, the clubs got bigger, and everything got REAL dark. Suddenly everyone was out for themselves. I have a lot of trauma from that. Going from such light to such darkness. Maybe had you been there.....you could have kept everyone dancing and appreciating life. GOD BLESS YOU and your 'good work'
The Doobie Brothers are one of the few bands where you can tell the fans apart based on which singer they prefer. I love both the Tom/Pat-led version and the Michael McDonald-led version mostly because growing up in my house, my dad was a bigger fan of the Tom/Pat version and my mom preferred Michael. Always good on road trips to see which one's songs we would listen to more on our "Best of the Doobies" CD
"I Cheat the Hangman" from the Stamped album, was featured on the 70's TV show "Whats Happening" when the Doobies made a special guest appearance. Fun episode as Rerun gets caught up in a scheme trying to secretly tape the concert at the school and the wacky fun ensues.🌟
Another band no one on You Tube has touched yet is "Loggins and Messina." My personal favorite by them is "You need a Man/Coming to you. Be the first one to check out this great band.
Jamel I just love your reactions vides. The Doobie Brothers are great. One of the best bands of 70"s and 80's. Love everything they did. Always great to dance to in the clubs. Great to see in concert. Keep up all your good. Love you Jamel

Ah...this song always brings back the memories of the 70's in Southern California...what a great time be alive !
YOU, my friend, have great taste in music. I grew up in the 70's and without question is my favorite decade of music.
Another Park Another Sunday-Real Love-Here To Love You-South City Midnight Lady. React Away! Sung by Tom Johnston and another lead singer before Michael was Patrick Simmons.☺
Jesus is Just Alright is another great Dobbie Brothers song!!
Absolutely right!
Back when you could say such thing on the air and it would be a hit.
The Doobie Brothers before MM, Tom Johnston on vocals! “LISTEN TO THE MUSIC” one of their bigger hits! Where have I heard “listen to the music?” Can’t remember, hmm!
Double drummers in perfect rhythm. One of the best 70’s band.
My favorite Doobie song !! The " Harmonica" is Sick !! 🤘
THIS WAS WHAT ALL THE BANDS IN HIGH SCHOOL WHERE PLAYING AT PROM !
AWESOME!!!!!
GOD BLESS
School dances were the best, live bands only back in the day!
Could not click fast enough! I was wondering when you were going to do this one! Oh yeah the harmonica was just laying in the weeds for ya Jamel! 😂 you want some funk? Hot Fun in the Summer Time. Sly and the Family Stone. That was early Doobies with Tom Johnston on vocals
this was before Michael McDonald.
Exactly right.
There are a lot of old blues musicians in heaven smiling knowing that without them there would be no rock and roll
Geez! That’s a HUGE one- please react to it- it’s fantastic too!❤️💛🤘🏼✌️
Great choice. Try “Listen to the Music” and “Black Water”. You will love it.
He did Black Water about three months ago, video is still up on the channel. :)
"Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" by the Doobie Brothers is also a great song.
you just gotta love those guys, they got the beat, the rhythm, the vocals, the soul!!!!
You can't sit still with this Song! It compels you to move and groove. Your reactions are awesome.
The Doobie Bros is one of those groups that basically have 2 fan bases, you have those that like the albums before MM got there then you have the base that only likes the albums MM was on, nobody is wrong just a matter of taste but there’s no denying that their sound changed once MM got there.
I like pre stuff better, but I still like both.
Agreed. Prefer pre-Michael best.
I like both!!!
@Stephen S. Me too! I look at them like two different eras. The original set that foundation, though.
If you're that knocked out by harmonica look this one up: "Bonnie Raitt - Runaway (Live 1977)", as entertaining as it gets as well as one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
...best way to know imMEDiately if vocals are Tom Johnston or Michael McDonald...if the funk is knee-deep from the jump, it’s Tom...;)!!
" Hold my beer real quick"!!! Classic Jamel. LMAO. Awesome!!
Oh and by the way, great choice!!
When you reacted to the song it just reminded me of how good it was. Good job
Listen to Doobie Brothers "Jesus is just alright"
Everything in this track is just perfect. The conga percussion is the salt and pepper that flavor it beautifully. The Doobie Brother's are great, I'm so glad they were able to channel these vibrations of love from the universe into such uplifting inspirational body moving grooves to share with the world.
☮️💟🎵
It doesn't get better. So strong. So solid. Soulful
I never tire of this song. Can't sit still.
When I first learned how to drive. This was the very first Song that came on the radio. I of course Cranked it Up!!
GOD BLESS YOU and your 'good work'
The light is quietly coming back. Keep the faith.
@@nancy9478 Yes it is. Faith is the most important thing right now. Thanks.
The original Doobie Brothers are the best ! And, the Captain & Me is the pinnacle of their talent, i think .
Be the first one to check out this great band.
the live version of Angry Eyes is fantastic. Recorded around 2009
Your Mama don’t dance (and your Daddy don’t rock n’ roll)
I found that version not too long ago and I was beyond amazed after 30 years the song was flawless.
Aleph Male Great suggestion with Loggins and Messina! Pathway to Glory is my favorite by them
Jamel I just love your reactions vides. The Doobie Brothers are great. One of the best bands of 70"s and 80's. Love everything they did. Always great to dance to in the clubs. Great to see in concert. Keep up all your good. Love you Jamel
Back when these songs my band played them 5 nights a week in the local taverns and clubs in our city and they always filled the dancefloor. We actually made a living playing doobie brothers songs and other popular groups from that time. The music from that time was awesome.
