As a guitarist and vocalist with The Doobie Brothers, Tom Johnston wrote the kind of joyful rock that is truly classic: "Listen To The Music," "China Grove," "Long Train Runnin'" and so much more. In 1975, an illness forced him to take some time off, which is when Michael McDonald joined the group.

Guitarist/singer Patrick Simmons wrote and sang "Black Water." Guitarist singer Tom Johnston wrote and sang "Listen to the Music" and "Long Train Runnin'." That's why they sound different. Patrick has that smoother sound and Tom has that more rockin' sound. They put out their first album in 1971 and released 5 albums (and a lot of great songs) before Michael McDonald joined in 1975.

Didn't I say the Doobie Brothers were one of _the great_ rhythm rock and roll bands of all time? Ha, ha! It is a joy to see someone your age discover how great our favourite music from our teenaged years was! 😉👌🙃💖🎶🎸😎😂
They had two drummers, plus congas. Often times three guitars and unbelievable harmonies! And like you said, Tiran Porter ought to be investigated. Or made illegal! Ha, ha, ha! Now you can understand why boomers don't listen to rap and hip hop. When you have heard the best, why settle for what is being peddled by the "industry" now? Keep in mind, that you _had_ to be able to play your instrument and sing back then. There was no Auto-tune and almost no guitar pedals, so you had to know your stuff inside out and backwards and be able to play your guitar _cleanly!_ Great reaction Harri!!!

Musicians playing in cover bands from the early 70's thru the mid 80's will attest that when you needed a full dance floor, the Doobie Bros were one of the go to bands to cover. Listen to the Music Long Train Running and China Grove were can't miss songs to get up and dance.. Tom Johnson lead sings on all 3 of these songs. In1974 (Skunk Baxter) and 1975 (Michael McDonald) joined the DB's. The bands sound began to change and a whole new following subsequently developed. A dividing line between the original fans and the late bloomers was real, but always friendly. Cos everybody loved these guys. The DB's are the most successful band to come out of San Jose California. The legions of us fans, who bought those first couple albums, are quite proud that one of our of a local bands made it really REALLY BIG!! On to China Grove Hari. You are going to absolutely love it.
