Nothing like today where you have to sort through 300 songs to find one that has talent. Back then it was talent: no bullshit autotune and computer looping.

This group has had three lead singers. This singer I believe if my memory serves me is named Johnson. He wrote this song and one that has become a standard LISTEN TO THE MUSIC if you never listen to another of their songs without a doubt this one must be it, When this guy left the group Michael McDonald took the lead, The songs changed to more of a blues style. Michael sings TAKIN' IT TO THE STREETS and WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES are classics.

You listened to the proper Doobies this time. Tommy Johnston, lead singer/songwriter and guitarist, who did this number among many, had to leave the group in the 1980's, after which Michael McDonald, who had already played with them before from time to time, too over the lead. There are... many mixed emotions about McDonald. But like him or hate him, he did keep the band together and successful through the 80's for which we should be thankful. Nowadays Tommy Johnston is back again, and they still rock the joint as never before; there's concerts on the youtubes by them up to like 2016/17/18
My all-time fave is and always will be their first huge hit Listen to the Music. Such an uplifting, upbeat song, you just can't sit still when you hear it. If you listen to it, you'll find out ^_^

Well, that was fun to watch. 👍🏻 I am 61 and saw Doobie Brothers 7-8 times in the 70s and early 80s. They always put on a great show. Having a percussionist and a drummer, 3 guys singing, so many guitars, and keyboards made for very entertaining shows. I prefer the pre-Michael McDonald years, but I think it’s mostly a function of my age and at what point I began listening to them. If I am the tie-breaker, my vote is for China Grove.

Man, I just love how you are enjoying that old-school stuff. It touched my heart, it really did. It’s good stuff. There’s a couple things I, as a musician Born during that time, feel I have to spell out for anyone who was born after about 1990. It’s a little thing but, it’s really easy to overlook if somebody doesn’t point it out sometimes. Here it is: this music is all made up of people making it from scratch with real musical instruments played by real people. It’s very different from a lot of what you get nowadays where everything is electronic and mixed up. For instance, that’s a real drummer there and not a beat machine with pre-programmed rhythms. That’s a real bass player there instead of a keyboard or electronic base groove. Same goes for the guitar player and that out of this world harmonica. And it’s just beautiful the way it all blends together. You felt it because it got you moving. That’s all that heart that goes into it from all the people making it. The other thing I want to point out is that it’s all original. There’s nothing being sampled here from something somebody else made back in the day. This really is music from back in that day! I wish we could get back to that a little bit because I think we’re missing something by not having it anymore. Peace, love and music.
