Three things - 1) I have a guess - possibly Mr Shaffner had bad vision, because you’ll notice in the past he is not wearing glasses and he clearly looked like he was in his 50s and when you see him later, he has a pair of glasses and perhaps back in the 1960s (or 1970s) he didn’t want to acknowledge back then he had worsening vision, so that’s why he didn’t see the obvious rotted connection hose - but if that were the case, bad vision wouldn’t stop him from feeling the pipe, unless he grabbed it at one end and just ran off with it dangling like a kid carrying a toy with one hand and when he got to the science lab, he just stuck one end into each without bothering to stretch out the pipe or feel it - which is a possibility. However I find that unlikely because even if he had vision issues and let’s argue if perhaps he was a secret druggie (which could also explain why he was so frosty and careless), it still would be unlikely that a grown adult would have not at least felt the frayed decayed portion of the pipe at one point. So perhaps he didn’t commit pre-meditated murder but he certainly would have been guilty of manslaughter and if you take into account how there are corrupt schools with corrupt or lax officials, that would explain why he got off easy the first time, even if he did commit manslaughter. 2) As someone studying French, the actress’ accent is not French - it is actually Québécois(laugh but it’s true - look it up) because in the Québéc region, there are differences between the two and some (mercifully... hehe I love how that works as Mercí is the French word for thank you.. lol... sorry random moment) people get frosty when you mistake the two and more - though Québécois formal language is basically the same as Metropolitan Parisian French, though the informal speech is noticeably different. It was a decent episode for sure but the hippy stuff just brought back to memory when my Mom would “go back into the peace and free love period” - apparently even when she was pregnant with me in 1984, at one point she wanted to give me a hippy name - Flower Moon Water.... 🙄😑🤦♀️. Thank God she didn’t. Anyway, good review - stay tubular and vive la France et Québéc!

Even with corrupt school officials, unless the parents just didn't press the issue, I find it hard to believe that he would still be working at school, especially at that particular school. I worked for a school district in the past and they might move him to some district position if they were just looking to keep things quiet and sweep it under the rug, but to be vice principal...it's just wrong in so many ways. 2. I have also studied French, though I couldn't differentiate between the two accents that you mentioned. All accents have their own regional dialects that make them unique. I just meant that to an average American viewer, you would believe she was from France. It was easily more French that the Ukrainian accents from the Tale of the Nightly Neighbors at any rate. 3. I too have always wondered how Mr. Shaffner even kept his job as a teacher, let alone became assistant principal, since he was ultimately responsible for Candy's death. But then it also sounds like everyone else just thought Candy merely got careless, as indicated by the other teacher telling Chris about her death. If in fact the other teacher (and everyone else) thought and assumed that she just got careless, how did Chris figure out the truth?
Yeah, the original series stuff is so hard to find on disc. It's always pirated and/or super expensive. I just ended up buying it on digital so I at least have it. Still can seem to find seasons 6-7 though.
I enjoyed his episode i loved the '60's references like the Beatles White Album and the '60's outfits i also loved the time travel element in this one. Although not a scary episode i enoyed it very much

They are always sent to the office anyway Julie's parents had to fill out her school records for being a new student address phone number and such the cool guys Fritz and Donny probably knew Julie's last name as she was probably introduced to the class by her teachers they probably made friends with someone in the office a student who could go through school records and get her number in order to pull the prank off does this sound plausible
Everyone asking about the Butterfly Effect? Seriously we don't know what happened after Candy died in the original timeline and I don't think the Butterfly Effect was thought of before.
1. I've never understood why Candy's ghost didn't talk until the end of the episode. 2. A common theme in fiction is the butterfly effect, which is basically how changing even the smallest detail can result in the biggest consequences, even if it was with good intentions. Candy's death was prevented by Julie and Chris going back in time, but wouldn't the prevention of her death somehow lead to other unforeseen (and negative) results as well? Also reminds me of the common saying/belief that "everything happens for a reason." See where I'm coming from? LOL BTW, if you haven't already done so, please do the episodes "Tale of the Bookish Babysitter," "Tale of the Guardian's Curse," "Tale of the Water Demons," "Tale of the Reanimator," "Tale of the Frozen Ghost," "Tale of Station 109.1," and "Tale of the Room for Rent." Yes, I was a huge fan of this show. LOL
Oh yeah, I can't even begin to unpack all the butterfly effect fallout that probably would've happened as a result of their trip back in time. It would be a fun idea to explore though for sure. As far as episodes go, I will definitely get to those episodes in time, but I'm reviewing them in the American release order with one episode a month, so it might be a while. I'm currently on season 2 with the Tale of the Thirteenth Floor coming out this coming Saturday. I am only three episodes away from Frozen Ghost, but those others are all seasons 3-5. Well the only time I really ever seen schools that were vandalized like that or the ones in movies that took place in places like East LA. But if he's going to be enough to tell the new student about being a troublemaker, he's apparently not too good of a principal if he's going to allow his school to fall in that condition. As to why he was such a dick to her, and this is just a guess on my end since I have met quite a few police firefighters and veterans suffer from PTSD and I'm willing to bet his character suffers from that since he's having to live with what happened in the lab that faithful day. And I can also vouch that people in the '60s not all of them dressed like hippies since my dad graduated high school and he was dressed nothing like a hippie. In fact when he got out he joined the Marines and served in Vietnam so you know he was if anything the opposite of a hippie
Furthermore, I'm also not willing to rule out the fact that this could have been intentional either. If you take a few things into perspective such as the gas line that was connected to the Bunsen burner had a gaping wide hole that even a moron can see and when she was on her way to the lab, Schaffner had it around his neck like he had that particular gas line prepped and ready for her and even when she started the project, he was like be back in 20 minutes as if he's trying to get himself out of the blast zones. And before her friend went back into time to save her and he had that discussion with a teacher that was working there when that happened, he made it seem like everybody thought she was being careless. So yes I am also in spite of everything I said in my last comment also willing to lean toward that this could have been intentional
Both great theories. Regardless of which case though, there is no way he'd be working in an administrative capacity after something like that. Even if it was an accident, he'd have been held responsible for not being there to oversee a student working with dangerous tools.
Seems like they didnt realize the lessons from Back To The Future, messing with time has dire consequnces. Kids are just evil espcially in school man, they seem to get off on pranking and tortuirng people. Also that ghost had shades on.......................

The whole way it handled time travel is one of the things that inspired me when I started on writing, myself. (I actually used the line "spooky? You haven't seen anything yet" once, lol) Gotta wonder how in the original timeline, Mr. Shaffner wasn't fired rather than promoted to assistant principal since the explosion happened in his classroom. I'm sure gross negligence causing death was still a thing by 1968.
I too appreciate Kristen's costume for this one, and all the effort she puts into creating a vibe. The story itself is kinda mid though. But ok, even Chaucer has some tales less interesting than their storytellers and the introduction.

Season 2 is the only season of Are You Afraid of the Dark that I don't have on DVD. Keep waiting for Amazon to get it back in stock.
