  • This happens so often: driving full throttle towards the closed level crossing. This happens during this ride at 15:40. On video it seems less dramatic, but in reality a train driver is immediately on the edge of his seat: is he going to stop? Beautiful autumn colors on the way, so that's nice! We also see that Ede-Wageningen station has a new roof. What do you think? You can watch the film I mention when entering Driebergen-Zeist here: • This Train Station Has...

Prachtige herfstkleuren onderweg, dus dat is genieten! We zien ook dat station Ede-Wageningen een nieuwe overkapping heeft. Wat vind jij ervan? I was on the train to Eindhoven last Friday evening when the train hit a car just before Boxtel station. I can only imagine how frightening this must have been for the driver, knowing there was little he could do to stop. He was incredibly calm and the train was evacuated within a short time. Luckily, no one was injured…Love watching the videos!

    Het CZcams-algoritme heeft mij dit kanaal op een dag aanbevolen. Het was in maart 2020; De pandemie begon en ik bracht een lange tijd thuis door, niet in staat om te werken. Ik raakte erg gesteld op deze vriend die ons af en toe deze prachtige video's gaf, zoals die van vandaag, met zulke prachtige herfstgezichten, en ik zeg dat ik op hem gesteld raakte omdat hij me op zeer moeilijke dagen aangenaam vermaakte, waarin we -letterlijk- gevreesd voor ons leven. Ik herinner me duidelijk de video's die je ons midden in de pandemie liet zien, met halflege en trieste stations en hoe langzaam alles gebeurde. Some really nice fall colors starting to set in! Very pleasant ride, as always! Oh, and if it were me, every crossing would make me really nervous! BTW, do you ever have to honk your horn? [Greetings from Tucson]

    • @markdees5347
      @markdees5347 Před 6 měsíci

      In the Netherlands, drivers (or engineers, as you'll put it) aren't required to sound the whistle when approaching a guarded crossing [anyone correct me if there are exceptions]. With a lot of crossings being within or adjacent to urban areas, sounding the whistle means noise pollution. You might want to consider the Netherlands a country having many US Quiet Zones, parts along the lines where engineers are allowed to only sound the bell when approaching a crossing, in order to prevent said pollution. :)

    • @AZqyc
      @AZqyc Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@markdees5347 Hi Mark ... thanks so much for the reply. It is quite noticeable as I "ride-along" European trains on CZcams that hearing a horn is really rare! Very nice that the noise pollution is minimized. Also, the "civilians" in cars and on the ground there all seem to understand the train ain't gonna stop for them!! Not so here in the US! Lots and lots of honking, and train/vehicle/pedestrian collisions aren't uncommon. I'd guesstimate one/month just here around Tucson. The electrification of the trains in Europe is really nice, too ... cuts down on both noise and air pollution. [Greetings from Jim in Tucson]

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@AZqyc I think it's different when trains (usually) are (relatively) short passenger trains that travel at full speed (100 to 140 km/h depending on the line) in The Netherlands compared to very long, and usually slow freight trains in the USA.
      If a passengertrain flies by while you are driving 100 km/h on the motorway, you know there's some serious speed involved.
      Using the horn is only done when danger arises or when required by track-signage (or when the horn has not been tested yet (has to be done every shift or 24 hours, can't remember which one of the two)
      I think it's better this way. Now, when a traindriver uses the horn, it stands out. And you also can tell what the horn is used for: a long single (and usually: low) tone is usually used when a train driver suddenly spots danger. A short single toned 'toot-toot' or low to high or high to low is usually used to greet someone down the line.
      The fact we don't honk also has to do with frequencies: many places see trains every 30 minutes in both directions now. When that happens some 12 hours a day (or more), and you throw a couple of intercity trains in the mix (and, depending on the line, some freight as well), you're talking about a near constant concert of train horns through densily populated areas. We wouldn't put up with this ;) If you want to get an idea what it sounds like, search for 'What if Dutch rail road crossings sounded different' on my channel.

    Wow what is apparently a very smooth ride, even the transitions are smooth. How do they quiet the noise of the wheels when they go over switch points? Coodos to the railway maintenance crews on not having annoying swaying and bouncing,like we have here in the United States. You watch rail videos of trains running in the U.S. and you can in-vision someone getting sea sickness from the movement.

    • @CabviewHolland
      @CabviewHolland  Před 5 měsíci

      There is no special technique to quiet wheel sounds. Good maintenance (=replacement) of these switches does the trick I think.

      None ;) Depending on the train you get a wider seat and more room for your legs, some have a private reading light, but when you get a Sprinter train the seats are the same shite-seats as in standard class, just offering slightly more room for your legs and a 'seperator' between the standard class and 1st class compartment that is so bad that I don't understand why it's even there in the first place (large gap (30 centimeters/about 12 inch) between end of seperation and 'ceiling')

    Your desk inspires a question, Is the speed indicated theoretical based on the motors or is it based on a separate wheel pickup on a non-driven wheel? This can be diagnosed by watching the speed indicator when obvious wheel slipping on acceleration happens. If it swings high then speed is either taken off the driven axel or the motor's electrical supply. (The latter might be a motor with a variable speed drive, which seems normal for trains and trams these days,)
    Colors - oh my gosh the colors. That's the best show I've had in the 55 years since I escaped Mitten (er Michigan)
    That blue pickup truck sure made a splendid show of wealth not caring about gas mileage (kilometerage?) with his unnecessarily abrupt stop. Gates going down ahead of you means coasting or slightly braking might save you a reacceleration from zero. Probably the driver was too young to have learned how to think yet.

      Railtracks in the Netherlands are built and maintained bij a private but mainly state owned company named Prorail. Trains themselves are owned by other private companies, like NS (Dutch Railroad), Arriva, Breng or other companies. Those companies also run buslines and other public transport in the Netherlands. So it is quite clear where responsibilities are. Because any dirt on the tracks can be dangerous as they tend to make the rails slippery, and because of safety on the tracks they usually are fenced off.

      Honestly, I see all kinds of people driving up to situations like that in which they know they have to wait, but for some reason decide that having to wait longer for driving up as fast as possible to a red light is apparently better than to just coast...
      My driving instructor always mentioned cars showing that type of behavior and asked his students to keep the car in mind if they could, because more often than not, we'd meet them at the next intersection: they didn't advance quicker than us, but only drove overly aggressive towards situations in which they had to stop.

      That, plus the fact that the soil is quite solid there (I believe?), often makes me think that the Arnhem - Utrecht part could be a nice candidate for upgrading to 200km/h. Although that would also require a serious upgrade to the electrification and train protection systems, and some trackwork to increase capacity and pull platforms away from the through lines.
      The through lines on the Utrecht - Amsterdam part were actually designed with 200km/h in mind, but the soil there is rather soggy, so I'm not sure I see that work well without a lot more maintenance to pull the newly formed bumps out of the tracks all the time.

    I know what you mean about car/truck drivers. In my part of England they have an irritating habit of accelerating when the road lights turn on and only braking after the barriers lower. Our half-barrier crossings are train-activated, so there's only 30 seconds between the lights turning on and the train passing, so they're just being impatient. :( It's not that unusual to pass over a crossing after seeing a car driven like that and it's half-way across the traffic lanes at the crossing, meaning that the driver seriously considered passing the barrier and driving across in front of the train. Even the smallest, 1 carriage, railcars (which we no longer use) weigh 41 tons; it will always win against a car!
    My least favourite crossings are something I don't think you have in NL: the AOCL ("Automatic Open Crossing, Locally monitored"), which is a road crossing without barriers, only the red flashing lights, activated by the train and with a white flashing light at train braking distance which tells the train driver that the road lights are working correctly. The maximum permitted train speed for those crossings is (in my area) 55 mph (~90 km/h), and there's *nothing* to stop an idiot car or truck driver ignoring the lights and driving out in front of the train. Thankfully they're being retro-fitted with half-barriers now, but there's still open crossings in use. And then there's the User Worked Crossings, which are mostly on private tracks to farms or between fields. I've had fatalities on UWCs...
    I'm intrigued that you don't sound the horn at people trackside. It's mandatory in the UK.
    Oh, and I hope you enjoyed your food. I heard the wrapper noise and instantly knew what it was because I do the same too. 😀
    Stay safe!

      UWCs are closed rapidly now over here finally after a serious accident at Hooghalen in 2020, those still in use have a speed restrion of 90 km/h. There are still some public crossings with just lights (AKI). Heritage railway lines still have crossings with just a road sign, accidents still happen there from time to time..

    • @atraindriver
      @atraindriver Před 4 měsíci

      @@CabviewHolland We still have road crossings here with just a road sign; there's one on a route I work. It has a 10 mph (~15 km/h) speed restriction, and a history of near misses. The UWCs on the same section of line have been retrofitted with red & green lights but for some reason this road crossing allegedly can't be - and the next level allowed today is an OD crossing (Obstacle Detection - full barriers with radar rather than cameras) which are ridiculously expensive, so there's no funds. Until someone dies, of course 😔

    I despair over the crass stupidity of almost all UK car drivers, especially where the ownership unnecessarily large vehicles and excessive speed is concerned. People don't seem to get that often it is their own selfish desires that cause legislators to enact the sanctions they hate so much. It is sad to think that you have factions in the Netherlands who are little better. I find I spend all my time whilst driving trying to predict what idiotic moves other drivers are going to make. It must be horrific when to see a large vehicle being driven towards the path of the train your are driving; it's not just your own life that flashes in front of your eyes but all your passengers and train crew too! There is a simple mantra many behind the steering wheel need to invoke: "LESS SPEED, MORE INTELLIGENCE!"
