New Year, Old Grind - 1984 Cub Cadet 782 Onan Repower Project

  • To all my new subscribers, welcome to the channel! I wanted to start off the new year with a video of one of my smaller projects that I've been working on for the past month or so. Most people know my channel for featuring garden tractors and ag, so I have to stay true to my roots and stick to the old grind...this type of content has helped grow my channel over the past 7 years and I still gotta make videos for my long-time subscribers and friends. I plan to have a Peterbilt 359 update video pretty soon.
    I picked up this post-IH era Cub Cadet 782 back in early December from a friend of mine in southern PA. It stayed in one area its whole life, as it was (technically) a one-owner machine. The owner had it serviced at the local dealer where it was bought new. He used it to mow and plow snow for about 34 years (and 850 hours) before its Kohler KT17 Series I engine broke a rod (they were notorious for rod failure especially when run on hillsides, because they lacked pressure lubrication. The connecting rod journals would tend to starve for oil when running on slopes). Surprisingly, the engine still ran decent with a broken rod. The owner traded in the 782 on a new Cub Cadet XT3. A fellow garden tractor collector friend of mine, who worked at that dealership at the time, bought the 782 and had plans to repower it, but his plans changed and he decided to get rid of it. I got first dibs on it.
    The tractor itself is in great shape and the original paint on it was very well-preserved. It was built by the Cub Cadet Corporation (CCC) during the crossover period from 1981-1985. It came with a model 44C mower deck that I am currently trying to sell. It has dual hydraulics, so by CCC's standards it's actually a model 784. I'm assuming the original owner also used it to plow snow, because of that feature. Also, the rear tires are loaded with ballast, and the tractor had wheel weights on it when it was traded in.
    Those of you who know me, know that I am a fan of Onan opposed-twin engines. For the past year or so, I had been tossing around the idea of building an Onan-powered 682 or 782 tractor (since the factory Onan-powered 982/1912/1914 are not easy to find). I happened to come across a good deal for a low-hour Onan P218G out of a John Deere 318, so I picked it up. It has a new carburetor, but hasn't been run since about 2005, so I figured it would need a good freshening up. I replaced all the gaskets and seals on the engine, and I replaced the plastic governor flyball spacer gear with a steel one to prevent any governor problems down the road. Also replaced the original P218 oil pan and starter with the earlier-style flat oil pan base from a B series Onan (used in the 982/1912/1914). A compression test showed 96 PSI on one cylinder and 107 PSI on the other, and there was very little carbon buildup on the heads, pistons, and valves. The cylinders didn't show signs of wear and the pistons had no play in them, so I could tell the rings weren't too worn (which is a huge plus). I also adjusted the valve lash to spec. I basically fixed, replaced, or adjusted anything that could go wrong in the future, so this engine should be ready to run. I plan to make a video of the first start. I had a custom CV-joint driveshaft built for it, which should be sturdier than the original straight-shaft it used. It has a special adapter to bolt the front CV joint to the Onan engine flywheel. The driveshaft has grease fittings, and everything is held together with Allen screws and countersunk bolts to eliminate vibration, so this driveline setup should last a very long time.
    I want to do this project the right way and make it look like a factory-fitted Onan engine, not just some hack job. I'm planning to use a set of dual mufflers and manifolds from a 982, and I'm still trying to figure out what to do for a front PTO. The crankshaft is the wrong size for a 982 PTO to fit, and a 318 PTO may not fit with the dual mufflers installed, so I have to do some thinking. Also need to find an air cleaner housing and a few other odds and ends for it. I plan to make this a long-term build, and would like to keep the tractor for my collection. Eventually it's going to get rear ag tires, three-point/sleeve hitch for the plow days, and I also want to install power steering from a newer Cub tractor. I'll be making progress updates as I work on it little by little.

At first I thought you made a error on the model number, but after doing a little digging I found out that there IS a Yellow 782. Awesome!! I also got the manual for my 782 tractor and the snow blower that came with it along with receipts from the original owner. He wrote on the manual the date that a brand new motor was installed. The tag reads 24303, although the last digit is very hard to read. But I think it's a "3". So, I believe mine is a Series II. Thanks for vid. I've learned a few things today. Thank you.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 5 lety +1

      You bring up a good point Mark. That oil filter seal/gasket is very important because when not installed, it allows too much cooling air to escape the cooling fins. Yeah it's funny how different brands share components. I have been into the garden tractor hobby for a number of years. Mostly older Sears and 80s & 90s Craftsmans and recently fell in love with the GE Elec-traks . The old GT6000 hydros from the 90s used a Hydro-Gear BDU-10 pump, which was also used on some of the 200 series Deere's of the same era. I just found out that Hydro-Gear still makes that pump and Cub cadet uses it on the top of the line Garden tractor! My family has a 94 GT6000 I fixed up to mow the hill that is too steep for the z turn. It's got 75lbs wheel weights and 50lbs of fluid in each rear and at almost 30 years old is still going with the original Magnum 18 engine. Now we have most companies putting junk k46's in an LT frame and putting 22" tires on it to fool uneducated consumers to think they are buying a GT, knowing full well that piss ant will give up right after the warranty is up.

  • @cubcadetmadness4673
    @cubcadetmadness4673 Před 5 lety +1

    Yes the aluminum rear ends have fine spline axles in them witch are a little but stronger. But since the it's aluminium it weighs a lot less. Witch weight is a key feature for doing really anything except mowing with the tractor.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 5 lety

      I forgot to mention in the video, but the rear tires are loaded, and the tractor originally had wheel weights on it. I guess that made up for the lack of weight in the rear end. Having all the weight up front with the cast iron engine and aluminum rear wasn't one of Cub Cadet's better ideas.

    MichaelTJD60 I have a onan question. I have a onan for a JD with electronic ignition. I want put it on my 982 cub. I know I have to change the oil pan & starter. But the fly wheel on it is to big as well. Can I take the smaller fly wheel off the original onan with points and put it onto the new one with electronic ignition?

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 5 měsíci

      An older B series flywheel will fit your P series engine, but you would have to change out all of the shrouds and tin work. You'd probably be better off just adding a spacer between the driveshaft flange and the flywheel. The flywheel does not protrude out as far on the newer engine.

      @@MichaelTJD60 just wanted to let you know how it going so far. I just had it running for a minute. I put Rotella 15-40 Full synthetic oil in it. Being it's a Brand New NOS motor, how should I break it in? I had to use the new tin that came on the motor. The coil is different and couldn't use the older coil because of the metal block breather (not sure what it's called) that replaced the rubber ones on the P series. There's a gap around the smaller flywheel and the tin, but I wouldn't think that would be an issue. I also forgot to put the metal plate back on the outside bottom of the oil pan. Is the plate missing an issue?

      @@speedbuggy7240 Per the Onan manual, it is recommended to get the engine hot by putting it under a good load for the first 5 hours of operation (enough to seat the piston rings and to properly "wear in" all of the new components), alternating between half throttle and full throttle - don't let it idle too long. Then change the oil after the first 5 hours, 25 hours, and 50 hours. I usually change the oil in this engine every 25 hours or so, but if you're not subjecting your engine to extreme environments all the time (hot/dry/dusty etc) then 50 hour intervals should be OK.
      I never really liked the idea of the plate under the oil pan - it's supposed to help air flow between the fins on the bottom of the pan to keep the oil cool, but as soon as you change the oil for the first time and the oil drip residue sticks to the bottom of the pan (which is bound to happen anyway), it will attract all kinds of dirt and grease which will plug up those fins. Deere-spec Onan engines never used that plate under the oil pan - I don't think having one makes much of a difference.

      I don't have much faith in Tecumseh's either. Was never crazy for them. This Kohler lasted 850 hours before the rod broke, so I'd say he still got his money's worth from it.

      He did get his money for it. I have only ever seen one good Tecumseh engine, and I own it. This engine powers our old Craftsman pushmower, and the thing is a tank. It'll go through almost anything.

      @MichaelTJD60  Před 5 lety

      I've thought about buying one just to mess around with, they're pretty simple tractors. The belt-to-shaft setup on them is kind of strange though....for that reason I'd probably go with a 70 or 100 instead.

    How do you feel about the 1995 John Deere 345 series ?

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 5 lety +1

      I wouldn't mess with the 345's built before 1998...they had a plastic cam gear that was prone to failure between 500 and 1000 hours. They also had the fuel pump mounted above the muffler and because of that, were prone to fires. For the 1998 model year they changed from the 18 HP engine with the plastic cam gear to a 20 HP engine with a steel one, which is a much better design. And they relocated the fuel pump. So in my opinion, if you're looking for a 345, I would only consider the later ones.
