And Then There Were Two - Another Cub Cadet 782, and Another GoPro!

  • Now coming to you through a GoPro Hero 8! I decided my old trusty GoPro Hero+ was due for an upgrade as it was pretty outdated. I bought the Hero 8 and plan to use both GoPro's together in some future videos. I'm impressed with the video and sound quality so far. Let me know what you think!
    Sometimes, one just isn't enough. My CCC-built 782 needed a companion since I sold my 882 diesel last summer, so I thought it might be a good idea to find an older IH-built 782 to go alongside it. The red IH Cub Cadet garden tractors are hard to find in my neck of the woods (I only know of one or two around), and when a friend of mine put this one up for grabs, I couldn't refuse. I needed another garden tractor like I needed a hole in my head, but the deal just seemed right. It came with no attachments and I don't really have a plan for it, although I may be working a trade deal for a tractor of another color (stay tuned).
    This red 782 was built in June 1980 and is in very nice original condition, with the exception of new front tires and a replacement Kohler Magnum 18 engine. It mowed a trailer park outside of Baltimore most of its life. Like most 782's (including my other one), it was a victim of the Kohler KT17 rod failure some years ago, and the KT17 was replaced with a good-running M18 out of a 1993 Snapper tractor. The Magnum engines are a popular repower option for these tractors since they're physically identical to the original KT engines and don't require any modification, aside from a couple small wiring changes. This one starts and runs great after a carb adjustment. The tractor overall is very clean and doesn't smoke, knock, or leak any fluids, and despite its age and some scratches in the paint, looks to have been very taken care of. I really just wanted the tractor for the purpose of making this video, as it looks pretty sharp next to the other 782 (which is also in its original paint). We'll see what comes out of this deal...someday down the road I hope to end up with a red 982, if I can find one.

    I heard you mention the tractor being built on a Monday and it made me think of this. I have a 2003 Craftsman LT2000 that was built on a Monday, and the rear decal that says, "Craftsman" was slightly misplaced. Mine is a bit higher up and possibly a bit to the side as well. The ones on the grille were starting to peel when I got it, so I put it under some water and scrubbed the stuck dirt off the back with a tooth brush, and they stuck again. Anyways, whoever was on decals that day was not doing to well.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 3 lety

      I've seen that on a handful of tractors. I'm almost certain this 782 was built on a Monday - not only is the IH decal off-center, but the serial number was stamped in the wrong spot on the tag. I've even seen a few of these tractors with a different decal on each side of the hood - one had a 582 decal on one side and a 782 decal on the other, and the owner swore it was all original.

And also you probably know this but surging is remnant of a lean condition..

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 3 lety

      This one doesn't have dual spool hydraulics, but my other 782 does. The surging on the Onan engine is more likely because of a leaking intake manifold, but I've gone through it and checked it over multiple times. I may try adjusting the carb as a last resort.

  • @paulg444

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 2 lety

      That's a possibility, but another possibility that nobody thinks about is how these engines pack full of debris over time and overheat as a result. I've heard that a lot of these engines threw rods as a result of packed cooling fins (overheating) in conjunction with the lack of oil.

      This particular model? Yes, the Kohler opposed twin engines had issues with the plastic governor gears stripping out, even on the newer Magnum series engines that were used for repowers in these tractors. I worked on another 782 with one of the Magnum engines (not the same tractor in this video) and it had a bad governor gear so the only way to keep the engine from over-revving was to use a second spring to hold the governor arm in place.

      The Onan engines are known for surging because of the split intake manifolds, but I don't know why this one continues to do it - I've split and resealed the manifold and the carb is new. I'm thinking it's the fuel.
