This is a great example of what not to do if you think you’re having a heart attack.
I did that this morning, then made an apt with my doc. I know that's not smart.
Your comment is as foolish as her decision.
That's because she was afraid of the money it was going to cost to go to the hospital... nice country.
Yeah it's because the healthcare in this country is awful and people would rather take that risk than pay thousands of dollars that they don't have

Sherry was hanging out with geniuses who did cosplay murder mysteries. She did this while in disguise, solving an ACTUAL murder mystery, and wasn't even a genius herself.
Sherry is Legendary Status.
@@jellyfishi_ She was a genius in a way that Mensa members didn’t understand. It’s amazing these people are considered geniuses but yet step over the line and kill someone. They probably thought they were smarter than everyone and could get away with it
We actually don't know, she might have had a genius IQ, she just wasn't a Mensa member. You need an I Q over 145 to qualify for Mensa. A number of people have that, they just don't feel like joining. My oldest son is in Mensa, but he went to like two meetings and thought of other things to do. I think he got involved in interpreting a lot of languages, not sure. I'm the village idiot, I have no clue how he came out so amazing, but I'm kinda proud of him.
None of them were or are actual geniuses. So-called IQ is thrown around like alcohol or drugs - it's a poor measure of intelligence.
I should add, Mensa and other high IQ societies are a veritable joke.

Sherry was clearly the main character.
I can't believe this story hasn't been made into a movie. This is one of the most original murder tales I've ever heard.

This would make a pretty good movie you right

MrBallen should have his own studio by now. I would trust this guy to oversee the adaptations of all these stories.
I think it’s a episode on forensic files
I remember this case. It just goes to show that intelligence not anchored by good ethics and morals breeds arrogance and narcissism.
Based, we make the characters we play. When we stand by and watch, we become what we hate.
This is such a brilliant comment. I love the truth it rings!
Same
Your analogy is faulty! Breaking the law is either intelligent or smart. The perp is just opportunistic pri*k and attempt of leaving town after a murder is a typical criminal mindset
In my experience arrogance and narcissism tends to be pretty even across the board. Loooot of smug dummies out there.
I’d heard of this case before, several times, but no one begins the tale with the victim, her personality, her life. Everyone starts with the poisoning and what came after. Thanks for painting such a vivid picture of Peggy as a person. What was done to her was just horrific.
I think thats why I just love what he does with his story telling. Theyre not victims or statistics, theyre people with lives and loved ones who miss them. No one else ever tells us about who they were and often times theyre just reduced to nameless victims.
The podcast 'Small Town Murder' did a good job covering this case.
I always admire the True Crime channels that put the victim in the forefront as opposed to only mentioning the victim when describing their brutal end.
So what killed the woman and hurt the kids in the first story?? Did I miss it? I just heard it's well known, it's got a cure, but it was too late for the mother... Anyone know what caused it?
@@deniseredman195 they were poisoned with thallium
For anyone wondering what thallium is. Thallium is a heavy metal used in the manufacture of electronic components, optical lenses, semiconductor materials, alloys, gamma radiation detection equipment, imitation jewelry, artist's paints, low temperature thermometers, and green fireworks. How I know all this is because I use to help my ex boyfriend cook meth. I've been clean 8 years 2 months and 11 days. All without going to jail. My husband saved my life.
It's also a major component of rat poison years back
Also, congrats on keeping clean for years!

That's what I love the most!
"A pale horse" is an Agatha Christie crime/detective novel where the murders are committed via thallium poisoning. A copy of the book was found amongst George's things.
So his brilliant masterful plan wasn`t even a original idea of his own.
ig he was prolly inspired by it.

I'm surprised Pie didn't connect the death threat to the neighbours who hated his entire household.
Because Pie didn't watched true crime all day on youtube like us all.😄
I'm Nigerian and one thing we know for sure is to watch and be careful of your neighbors at all times. And make sure your doors are locked and your iron bar protector are locked using more than 1 padlock. This is such amazing story telling, the first half of the video I was convinced it was Pie. Then for the second half I was 100% thinking it had to be ‘Sherry’ because of her interest in how George used thallium in the fake murder. Also how you set her up as this crazy woman who wanted to be friends with this ‘lovey couple’. The last 7 minutes? Just imagine, these psychos threatening the family to move and then killing the mother just to decide a few months later to move themselves.

It just goes to show Mensa is bullshit, or high iq doesn’t actually mean you’d be smart. Because their act was just retarded.
Forreal. That wife is still out!
Maybe they were paranoid and wanted to distance themselves from what they just did
The moment you introduced how sherry was super attached to George and Diana I thought that it must have been her who committed the crime but when you revealed that she was the one solving it I was in real astonishment. Wow the way you give voice to these stories is impeccable
Yeah, I originally thought- oh geeze, mentally focused nerds- these people must be harmless and therefore the good guys…. But that annoying Susan must be the killer! If she couldn’t get her life together in Texas- I bet she met the family and killed them having met the mother at the diner!
….and then MrBallen explained the truth and I felt totally hoodwinked and bad for misjudging Susan- who was apparently a complete badass and the hero of this sad situation.
It’s sickening that Diana somehow is still out there being a vile Karen of a creature.
Same, I thought she was gonna either be Pye,Pi,Pie’s? Ex wife, ex girlfriend or a lover…

I can't remember why I know about thallium poisoning, but as soon as you said poison tests came back negative I had a strong feeling it was thallium poisoning, and when the Mensa portion got to the "perfect crime" game I was sure of it.
I remembered the case from an ID channel program but couldn't remember the name if the poison. But if not mistaken, they way they put it is the guy used the woman sherry as a scapegoat to draw suspicion away from himself even so far as to pretend to want to date her and actually blackmailed her somehow to help him. Not sure but thats what i remember of it.
My mind didn't go to thallium, but I recalled an episode of House where a woman poisoned her husband with gold of all things. So I was wondering if a heavy metal of some kind was involved.
Why can't it be detected?
Can't thallium be detected in blood or urine?
@@random_information7it can be detected everything known to mankind can be detected unless its alien. The problem is doctors in rare cases like this don't even attempt to test for it. Theres probably thousands of diseases that harms a humans. Unless your doctor know the situation u were in they cant properly test for it thats why they read symptoms. Also thats why u need to always be purely honest to doctors in such situations. The gamily got lucky that doctor remembered the teachings as thalium poisoning is so rare the family mostly likly would have died and doctors had run out of possible tests to give family as nobody would be able to connect the dots of thalium to them
Yes, because with cyanure it couldn't be " perfect".
I’m really picky about my true crime- there’s a lot of really bad storytelling out there. No inflections, context or creativity … and how the story is presented is so crucial. You are really skilled at that and I appreciate it. This was a great story telling and what a twist at the end! Thanks for these I really enjoy them.

Totally, without her amazing work I'm sure George would have made the perfect murder and hot away with it.
"Smart" is actually not defined properly in American system. American system just evaluates vocabulary and a miniscule set of drab computational skills. When you look at eastern cultures, smart is a compilation of not just academic smartness but also application, innovation, emotional intelligence, social inteeligence, ethical intelligence, abstract thinking, big picture thinking, cross linking various aspects of life and occupations, personal responsibility, sensibility to different cultures, awareness of various perspectives, resourcefulness etc etc etc. I mean there are entire books on just each one of these subjects. Best Hello Fresh ad ever!
I can't fathom how completely terrifying and horrific Peggy's suffering was. It breaks my heart hearing the pain she was in for months on end.
I was quite confused what is going on with her, why is she so resitant to medical treatment? Is it because it is expensive?
@@1mol831 I believe it was because she had 50,000 times the amount of Thallium in her system. Pain medication wouldn't/couldn't touch her.
@@Mswords This.
As well as the fact that no one knew it was thallium poisoning until it was far too late, there was no way for them to give the correct treatments in time. They could only apply general medications to treat the pain, which of course did not do much due to the severe amount of thallium in her system.
@Witty Witty no way my guy. I’ll concede that Diana probably played a part in the murder/poisonings, but George is not innocent no matter what his wimpy disposition was.
@@1mol831 not just that, you'd be surprised as to how many people are terrified of hospitals and doctors.
Kudos to their police woman who gained the trust of George and actually got George to hand over the keys of his house to her. That was brilliant police work
As soon as I heard about the murder mystery plan, I knew she was a cop. Suzanne is proof that if you “play nice” you get more done as an investigator than if you act like a jerk.
@@cpmow831 there's a good chunk of cases that took alot of dedication from law enforcement to private eyes that some have lasted years. Nowhere near as exciting as the cases we see here on YT, and not even the great JCS could fathom the extent of their methods .

I am not too crazy about podcast. I like watching you tell the story simply because I am hearing impaired. Your voice is clear as a bell. Perfect!
I 100% believe Diana is the mastermind to this.
My dad was a part of a Mensa chapter growing up, and he ended up leaving. I asked him after watching this episode and the first thing he talked about was the MASSIVE egos that every individual had. I showed him this video and he laughed saying this is no surprise. Their idea of fun isn't typical.
I used to go to chapter meetings which were basically just cocktail parties where the kids could play and the holiday parties with my parents. I did find the newsletter amusing. Especially some of the classifieds back in the late 70s looking for mates. Wild

I remember when this was on the news. It took them 1 minute to describe it. The next door neighbor, who was a Mensa member, got tired of his noisy neighbors, so he left a few cans of poisoned Coke on their doorstep. The family didn't know who left the Coke there, but they took the cans inside and drank them.
It wasn't a group of geniuses, it was one guy. And he wasn't killing for fun, he was upset at the noise level of his neighbors.
Discovered this channel recently and have been binging these videos waaaaaaaaaay too fast.
I'm dreading the point where I've watched them all and have to wait a whole week for the next one like some kind of caveman
Mr. Ballen, today was the day I introduced my adult son to your stories. He was mesmerized and is likely binge watching your videos right now. Your unique talents for storytelling is reminiscent of my Cherokee Grandfather’s style. Btw I am a 55+ year old lady, and my grandfather was born in the early 1900’s. Your style is familiar and very interesting. Have a wonderful day!!
Very cool!!!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven by Dr. Diana Carr’s office and never realized this story was attached to her. I grew up in Sebring, FL… so this story hits home. Literally. It should be noted that Dr. Diana passed away in 2018 from a stroke.
Good, may she rest in piss. She was obviously involved and does not deserve the respect of being called doctor
Just another Karen who doesn’t deserve the respect to be referred to as doctor, especially since she insisted on it. 🙄 There is no way, IMO, she didn’t know. Good riddance.
Good riddance tbh
Not surprised that a stroke got her after seeing her photo. Then again it coulda been all that big brain strain from being so much smarter than everyone else to marry a murderer.
That's absolutely crazy, but good to know. Ty. I think I'm going to google my doctors.
I usually never comment in a video, but i have to come up and say that this is the best storytelling of a murder that i've ever seen. I was nowhere close to the truth the entire time, great video!
This was one of the best stories, lots of twists. Sherry going from suspect to cop was amazing.
You told this story so well, I thought up until the end that Sherry (Susan) was definitely the killer. Absolutely crazy. So sad that Peggy lost her life.
OMG, I thought it was Susan too. Great telling by a brilliant man, MR B👍🏼
At first I thought she was gonna be too till she kept asking George questions about the murder mystery game then I realized that she was a PI
Me too! What a twist that was.
The killer in this case has to be simultaneously one of the smartest and dumbest criminals in history. On one hand, he used a very potent and uncommon poison with vague symptoms that make it difficult to identify. On the other hand, he cooked up a "fictional" scenario that bore an uncanny resemblance to his crime, distributed it to dozens of people, and bragged about his knowledge of poisons to an unusually curious stranger who turned out to be an undercover cop.
I honestly believe its not just stupidity but more so his ego. He felt like his plan was so good it had to be shared and he likely wanted a sort of recognition for it while also not being caught. Someone with a lesser ego would probably avoid mentioning anything at all involving a murder.
@@MurkyTheWolf 100% As I was watching, i was thinking man, crazy how "geniuses" lack street smartness. Him and his wife not seeing red flags abt Susan and catching on. At the end of the day, the most intelligent are humans too and vulnerable to the most basic human instincts.
@@zeffery101 well, mensa takes in the top 2%, given the worlds population.. we are talking about above 140 million people..
to me as a swede, that is a high number of people.. (we have 10 million)
but then, those who join mensa in the first place have already shown they have something to prove.. given the amount of people with that iq and the low number who actually join mensa.. well.. people join to show off.. they have an ego and they arent actually that smart to begin with..
it doesnt take a genius to join mensa.. you can pay, cheat and retake their test how many times you want.. people do it for clout, that includes stupid people.
I feel as though ego and stupidity are justifiably comparable because the ego makes us do stupid decisions based on simply how we “feel”
@@abril443 i think what separates us is the knowing... the self-aware.. ive been administered the wais iii test and they claim i belong in the 2%, yet i consider myself an idiot.. im fully aware of all my flaws..

only 2% of the worlds population has green eyes, so ill happily stay in that category instead.
Usually the minutiae of a story drives me crazy. The little details in Mr. Ballen's narratives are engrossing.
A true storyteller
I have said it before and I'll say it again. You are an absolutely spectacular storyteller. I love how you treat narrative. As a writer I try to do the same (mostly in health comms and marketing for small businesses, but still).I take notes during your videos and podcasts to try to inform my writing better. I realize that writing and telling are two very different things, but they borrow heavily from one another. Thank you for your excellent commitment to this amazing tradition.

Sherry/Susan might not have been a literal genius, but she deserves honorary Mensa membership for the way she brilliantly outmanoeuvred these people. Ironic that she turned out to be better at solving murder mysteries than they were at creating them.

What’s sad is that Peggy was unable to be saved and passed away from the Thallium poisoning and George is still alive to this day on death row, after committing such a heinous act.
It's not really so sad he's still alive, since he's still rotting in prison and eventually getting euthanized. But man should it have been sooner.
Don’t be sad. He’s sitting in a 2x4 concrete box. I’d rather be dead.
They should use the same thing he used on him instead of the normal "lethal dose". Which just makes you got to sleep very quickly.
Imo thats much worse. He’s dying slowly in a cage on death row. He’s suffering right now.
That's life for you
Poor Susan had to attend all those Mensa meetings. She’s lucky cringe is rarely as fatal as thallium poisoning.

In the process of committing his "perfect crime," this genius killed someone with which he had only one degree of separation and a history of conflict via his wife, used a rare method of killing he subsequently explained to a local audience following the murder, and after meeting a suspicious-as-fuck woman who repeatedly probed his knowledge of said method just two weeks after the crime, he provided her with unlimited access to the evidence and murder weapon he had failed to destroy. Yeah, and he would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids.
Perfectly said. Killing someone you live next door to immediately disqualifies it from being a perfect crime. Physical proximity to a crime is like the most basic factor in who becomes the target of investigation. Just looking at wrongful convictions, being near a crime or knowing the victim puts you at a greatly increased risk of being prosecuted. Elaborate is not the same as intelligent. And not to get too far into phrenology, but the dude looks more pre-human than human. No offense to previous species of hominid.

I'm only 15 minutes into this, but I've heard that the way we put people to death now is excruciating.
