The thing I love about Mr. Ballen's storytelling is that you are not even consciously aware you are being told a story. It's like you are actually there and it is happening to you. That is a rare quality.
Thank you! That’s really cool!!
it's both his best and most disturbing storytelling quality. I have had to take a break from his videos for a few weeks a number of times simply because it was starting to creep into how i thought in daily life.
I would bet it's the reason he has started telling some positive stories on his channel. Which BTW MrBallen you could 100% start a side series where you tell mostly positive but interesting stories. You're a storyteller and I would wager you don't have to just tell these kinds of stories. That would be really cool. To hear you tell funny stories or touching stories, etc.

I have the same fear, But im sure he don't rub Out of stories.. Cause is a crazy world we live in 🥸🤠

Your biggest fear should be he'll die before getting through half
Great Story. Thank you. It struck a nerve, because of an incident many years ago: We ( 7 teens) camped on a Oregon beach on 1970. I awoke with a feeling of something being wrong. And, wrong it was. A woman was crawling toward our isolated camp on the beach. Confronted, she ran. We all awoke and armed ourselves. We found another strange man in his forties also very close hidden behind a driftwood log. This was the " Charlie Manson era" and it really terrified us. Footnote: I've run into similar strange people ; possibly a cult who claimed there was a cave system under Mt Shasta. Right. But I' ve not hiked without a firearm for 35 years. Thousands of miles of solo hiking for over fifty years left me with the lesson for those in the next fifty years: Don' t hike alone. Travel armed. Keep aware, not paranoid, just realistic. Dont be a victim. Project strength.
Yup, don’t go anywhere without it!!
I've hiked alone but where I live the hiking trail always has people on it. I've stayed away because there are too many people but wow after hearing stories like this I'm grateful that their are lots of people I encounter. Sometimes I'm alone but nothing weird has happened.

how scary! glad you all made it out safely. thanks for telling!
I saw in the comments on a different comment that the cave system you mention is “hippy liberal bullshit propaganda” 😂 I just wanted to say that lol. Also, glad you’re okay man that sounds absolutely INSANE. That’s why I bring a gun no matter where I’m camping or hiking. You never know.
Please Mr.Ballen don’t run out of stories I’m actually living away from my country and I don’t have parents nor any relatives ever in my life to talk to. I actually met Christopher's mother a few years back traveling through Colorado, she was a very kind lady and helped us out tremendously, she was more concerned for our health than of anything else and so she told us about her son Christopher's story and actually showed us some proof, because it's not every day you run into the mother of the guy from "Into The Wild". She was an amazingly kind and warm hearted woman and I hope she's still doing well.
I love how you have 6M subscribers but still mainly just sit in front of a green screen and talk, no flash, no clickbait, just pure stories, really goes to show how much talent you have

The thumbnails are clickbait but the videos themselves are excellent.
And how humble he's stayed.

That was scarier than a movie. You sealed the deal for me, never going into the woods by myself, especially at night.
yea fr, every time I go out in the woods or do something especially stupid ill tell my friends to get me a mr ballen video
Eh most are safe enough from this type of thing in my own experience. At least on the east coast. Gone solo hiking/camping for years and haven’t had a single experience that I can’t explain. Nothing scary beyond what the human mind itself will do in certain circumstances. That’s not to say it can’t happen, but fear itself can often cause the brain to trick you and, well, I value nature too much to give it up over that. Always strapped just in case though, and having an intimidating canine companion is also a plus lol. He’s with me most of the time when he can get off of work.
Lol, jerk.
You are both lucky because my place is surrounded by woods
So once night falls I am inside!
I turned this story into a series of encounters for tonight's session of the DND campaign I currently run. It was hella spooky and creeped the whole gang out. Thanks for the inspiration!!
You are so fuckin beautiful ❤
Na bro what the hell 💀💀@@Chelseaupdatefc
How many sessions were you stringing your players along? And what was your climax like? I only ask because I also DM and want to try integrating a arc like this in my campaign.
@@garrittmohn188 I made the arc last for three sessions. The campaign they're traveling through the woods, so on the first session where this arc showed up, they ran into a family in the woods who was telling them about how other travelers in the woods in this area have reported things going missing from their campsites in the night. Later that session, they saw two people in white who refused to speak to them at all. The next session, they woke up in the night to the sound of whispers and then also heard whispers around them in the day as they walked. This happened a few days in a row, one of the players got so freaked out he took a level of exhaustion to stay up all night and watch for them. The day after that, cuzza his exhaustion, as they heard whispering during the day, he sent an Eldritch blast in the direction of some of the whispers. This prompted the leader to come out of hiding-turned out they were a group of traveling nomads/cultists who believed in some Jacques Valee-esque stuff about life. They were all illusionists and they lived in Tiny Huts and would steal from people who traveled. They said they took a liking to the party and wanted to recruit them to join their cult. But the cult was involved in some nefarious stuff related to the campaign (the scales of magical creatures were discovered to be potent magical tools and a sort of trafficking industry sprung up around the sale of these magical creatures, these cultists were involved in the trafficking). A battle then ensued where the cultists hid inside their tiny huts and the party had to figure out how to draw them out of hiding in order to take them down. Eventually, it was kinda uncovered that most of the cultists were under magical control by the leader, so once they took the leader out, the rest of the cult kinda woke up from a haze and disbanded.
Most scary stories youtubers just seem to be reading posts directly from reddit in monotone or overly dramatic voices, but Mr. Ballen has a genuine "dad telling his kids a bedtime story" energy. And I love it.
He projects energy because of how much he utilizes body language
Yup
He's actually a good storyteller, and it shows. It probably helps quite a bit that he edits most of these stories into his own words, so you've got a consistent voice, from a guy who's actually good at telling stories...
Cut to his kids just being utterly terrified and freaked out
I don’t think any functional dad would be telling their kids these kind of bedtime stories
I don't even feel completely safe walking in the woods during the day time, I can't imagine the fear this hiker went through. Absolutely terrifying.
I live in a small town of 800. We have a bike path that’s beautiful, both sides lined with trees but I would never go there unless my husband was with me. In bigger cities that has bike paths like ours, women were attacked. It’s scary because you never know who would be hiding in the trees. It’s probably been around 20 years ago since I’ve been there.
I went to quote a job in the country broad daylight no one around for miles and I did not like it. I could have made $5k in a week but I didn’t like that feeling being there alone was horrible. Couldn’t imagine being there at night
The woods are a little scary at night, tbh ...
I mean, not least of all because, depending where you are, there's a very good chance there are things out there in the dark that could easily take you apart, and/or might find you delicious...
I think humans understand and feel this on a deep instinctive level...
Maybe some kind of species memory from our "cave man" days... lol
It's an unsubstantiated claim so there's no telling whether it really happened. Still a good story.
I often think about how my friends and I would explore the woods as kids in the 80's. No food, no water, no way of communication. Our parents basically were just in hope we'd return home, and they had no idea where we were. Fun times, but I couldn't imagine it today.
The fact that Matt was able to go a few hundred feet away from the trail (and more later on) to set up camp and was able to get back to the trail just as easily was surprising. If it had been me, I'd be lost 😅
Me too. I have no sense of direction
I'm assuming it was just directly left or right so all he would have to do is walk straight. I could be wrong though
Tchya, but this dude has already walked 2000 km.

When I was a little boy back in the early 70’s my mom would tell my brother and I ghost stories. Thinking back at it I have trouble understanding why she would tell a six year old these creepy strange stories but she did. I’m not gonna share a story but the one theme she always brought up was that the forests all across America were haunted. She talked about people dying and people being murdered out there and their spirits become trapped. I’m 56 now and to this day I have trouble thinking about camping out in the forest because of my odd mother. I’m not afraid of cougars or bears per say but I am afraid if ghosts bothering me. This mr ballen made me think of my mom. Thanks a lot mom!!

15 years ago I was on a Wild land firefighting crew for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and we did a lot of hiking and training in the Lassen forest, and I can tell you, there is some eerie country way back there. It made the hair stand up on the back of your neck!! Creepy! Glad I was with 16 other crew members 😮😮😮
America is cursed
Can you give me an example? Not doubting you at all. It just seems really interesting to me.
I personally have also had a few incidents out in the woods, alone, that caused me to….well, it wasn’t funny.
At all. In fact, I bought my first pistol after one incident.
I love the idea that going into the wilderness is seen as "taking a break from reality". There is no reality more real than the wild.
Yup. I see it as going back to reality lol
Wow. You said it so well, it makes so much sense. Thank you so much for this
Even the wilderness isn’t true reality. It is a set up. Reality is found in spirit which manifests into quantum mechanics which manifest into matter.
Stepping into that reality can make you realize just how hardy our ancestors were. They definitely lived short, but exciting lives. It's harder to live off the land than most people think.
Especially going there all alone. Use the "buddy" system so you don't end up as a Mr Ballen story.
When you go camping you better be prepared for a ringing bell, a guy stalking you for directions, weird noises, people stalking your camping area, land mines, bigfoot, guys being very tall and tapping on your cabin and the roof, other cryptids, and a whole bunch of other things. Mrballen has taught me nowhere is truly safe lol
Don't forget about asking for directions to bells canyon
My woods are safe! The Pembina Gorge of North Dakota is safe as hell. There mountain lions and wolves and bears but they don't really mess with people. The most dangerous thing here is the Moose.
I'm going to vacation in the headless valley.
When I go camping I am armed well enough to take down a bear. Anyone who isnt is part of the food chain...
Also the men who take your torch while you are asleep in your tent and taunt you by writing "sleep well" on the back your car 🙄🙄🙄
I once decided to take a trip to Yosemite, ALONE. Being my first time out there I thought to myself; what an exciting adventure I'm about to have! This was during the year of Covid and so I needed to have an access pass which I didn't have. So day after day I drove the park finding back roads and deep woods that I could park the truck and sleep. One day I finally found this beautiful stream that I decided to hike up to; it was amazing. It opened up to a nice river a couple miles in. I started to get this eerie feeling that I was being watched. I found this pool that I finally stopped at that almost looked like it was man made but was questionable because it was so isolated on this trail I was on it didn't even have footsteps or tracks and covered in brush I was definitely on a trail less taken. Before I could even take off my boots to dip my feet all around me the the bushes and brush all moved as if the wind was blowing down stream. Only problem is in the distance no other trees were moving only what was near me. Rocks started to fall suddenly there was a dead silence. No wind, no bugs, no birds it was just silent. I never put my shoes on so fast! I yelled out and said I'm sorry for disturbing your place and I'm leaving now, I respect your space and I wont be back and I leave your home in peace. Terrified but not wanting to show fear I walked fast, then jogged and eventually I ran so quick to my truck at a sprinting pace and the entire way I could hear parallel steps along the ridge with every step of mine. I'm 6'2" and in pretty good shape. Whatever kept pace with me was with me every step of the way and every time I stopped, whatever it was stopped with me. I finally made it to my truck jumped in the bed and pulled out my sidearm ready for whatever was following me only to find me looking around aimlessly at nothing. I hopped in the truck, punched it and didn't look back. I've been camping all over the US. Angeles forest, Yellowstone, Joshua Tree and the list goes on but nothing and I mean NOTHING compares to that creepy experience I had that day.
sounds insane mayne, what do you think it was?
sounds like a typical bigfoot experience.

@domm5715 I've seen some crazy stuff in my life on this planet. This world is old and beyond me, and my small-minded comprehension. What I can tell you is I was scared. I've been around a while now, and I've had a few jump scares. A few things startle me, but nothing to this day. Has had the hairs on my neck and the fear down my spine like that day.
@JamesPlatt88 maybe big foot, maybe spirits. Might have even been alllliieeenns lol. What I can tell you is that I'm comfortable with the dimension and reality of what I can see, feel, and believe. And I believe my ass was getting the hell out of dodge and back home to the comfort of my 4 walls!
They kept finding him because he kept cooking after making camp. Smells in the woods that don't belong tend to carry and can attract unwanted attention. Plus, his pace by that time would be set, meaning he would travel the same distance each day. Not hard to do the math. Also, if those people lived of the land, they would be excellent trackers. Food for thought....
I have three rules when hiking: 1) always carry a large friend (357, 44 mag, 9 mil, etc.), 2) hike with another large, competent male (usually my brother), 3) make sure my large, competent male carries a friend (357, 44 mag. 9 mil. etc.). These are good rules to prevent feeling vulnerable.
That's what I never understand. I wouldn't do this solo and definitely not without my friend who carries 18 kids in her.

I've watched SO many of your videos and this one has me looking behind my shoulder in my own house. Thanks for always putting so much effort into your content John!
The thing i love about mr. Ballen is that hes an Excellent story teller seriously
I grew up hiking and camping in Boy Scouts. We had 3 major rules: NEVER hike alone, always have something to protect yourself, and if someone is following you, turn around and leave.
Finally someone sensible. I've heard too many of these camping stories of people going alone and getting stranded and nearly dying. They're amazing to hear about their survival but I can't imagine why these people go alone or don't have some way to communicate with someone else of some kind of danger.
Same here
We also was told that at minimum hike with 3 people
If someone gets injured: 1 goes for help, 1 is injured and 1 stays with whoever is injured
wait, if someone is following you and you turn around, doesn't that mean you're heading toward them?
yeah turn around to their side
And,if some-1 else is w/ you.NEVER say "I'll be right back".
I’m watching this in broad daylight, in my kitchen, while doing dishes. Just at the part where he sees in his peripheral vision the dark figure running toward him, my 6-year-old came running into the kitchen. Startled the hell out of me. That just shows how talented you are at telling these stories.
I was downstairs many years ago watching Salems Lot, must have been around 3am when I felt someone stood behind and to the left of me. I slowly turned around to see my daughter who must have been around 3 at the time just standing there looking at me. Dressed in a long white nightshirt made my jump so high I must have almost hit the ceiling!
Heheheh
Kids can be creepy. I love mine, but sometimes they get up in the middle of the night and stand there and look at me, and will wait until I say something to them like "get in the bed go back to sleep". My eldest is 13 going on 14 in 2 weeks and when she was 2, she would sleep walk and just stand there. I know that people who sleep walk will attack so I would have to be careful. This is off subject but I do not feel it is sleep walking if they have a weapon. Lol there was a case where I believe a man killed his wife because she woke him up. He had that fight or flight experience going and I think he was also acquitted of all charges because it is a known condition.

Camping in Silverado canyon in 92, had someone walk a circle around the tent me and wife were in. Left as soon as i cocked the revolver, that was a good feeling right there. Next morning saw there was another person, stayed about 50 ft away.

This channel has single handedly made me 10,000% more cautious when contemplating a forest outing.
Thinking how much time I spent hiking and camping in the forest. I'll never ever hike or camp again.
And more aware of the world
This channel has single handed Lu made me more vigilant about my surroundings! Plus I absolutely learnt new stuff especially about cave diving, diving in general etc!!!
You needed this story to be cautious about a forest outing?
It bums me out really, I'm in the valley of the famous cougar attack he showed a shot of. We've had big foot photographed on the mountain, I've camped, run around the mountains here so much without a fear until I encounter Mr Ballen. I'm older and haven't been up the canyon in too long it's across the town and up! I yearn to go up there but guess who will be on my mind? Many stories. Oh and from the place Elizabeth Smart was taken from her home by two people in White robes no less.
This one hit home for me. I've lived in shasta county my whole life and have experienced some pretty unexplainable things in these woods. Around 20 years ago my uncle disappeared in a area just south of castella. His dog returned home but not a single trace of him was ever found even after large groups searched for him. I just worked in the Lassen national forest area last year because of the Dixie fire and let me tell you those woods get dark not just physically but mentally. I love your stories Mr ballen. I could tell you some pretty interesting ones of my own.
Tell them please
I'm really sorry to hear about your uncle. I pray for your family to get some kind of closure someday.

I did a a few searches and supposedly some ancient people called Lemurians, tall thin in sandals and white robes, are believed to still live there. Odd thing is they are believed to live under Mt Shasta or something like that. Very odd
Lots of folks live(d) out there in the wilds of N Cal. Back in the 80s there
were lots of "weed" farms way deep in the forests. LE/military would conduct ops and clear them. Also were several old US Army "camps" from WW2 era. Dangerous people and dangerous areas. Excellent story.

Hands down, this would be the perfect story to tell at a campfire. It would help set the vibe and could give others chills on a entire level.
Until the feral humans overhear you know they exist. Then they have to kill you and your whole group to keep it secret. Only hope is if Bigfoot comes to save the day for a payment of beef jerky or that there’s enough bullets/guns to kill those smelly fucks who look like they’re walking dead extras.

I live near the Appalachian Trail and Ive seen some WILD things out here, and there are people who you look at and just instantly worry you. I REFUSE to hike that trail without a firearm anymore.

My thoughts EXACTLY!

That’s a good idea, there are several dangers in the application mountains.
Whypepo problems.
The scariest story I’ve watched so far on this channel, reminiscent of, “It was a dark and stormy night…” or “the call is coming from another phone in the same house”. Great storytelling.

As an avid horror movie fan this was 10x better than watching tv.

The part where he reached that little town after leaving the woods and the people in white, and debated about calling his family to come get him? I was yelling at my phone screen “don’t finish the hike!! It’s just a 100 miles!! Lie! Tell people you finished! But don’t leave that town!”
Just like watching a horror movie, only better lol
I’m gonna re watch/listen to this! In case I missed any additional details
I live near Shasta, and it's true that there are so many stories of strange happenings on the mountain. The craziest ones to me are the people who disappear from places where it is seemingly impossible to disappear from -- like parts of the mountain where there are no trees or hiding places, and they were with a group one second only to not be with them the next, and no sign of them is ever found again. So many things I want answers to!
Makes me wonder a bit if there are hard to see holes. You wouldn't think a person would be able to make a full-grown adult vanish suddenly without a sound if they really are close to other people.
However, sometimes there are pits or holes people don't see, and that could happen so fast that someone could be "there one minute, gone the next". Like when someone falls in a well.
Of course, there are also other things to take into account, too. I bet some of the people who 'disappeared' never even went there and it's just a cover story for a murder, using the stories surrounding the area to make it sound more believable. Things like that.
@@emeryltekutsu4357 this is the answer. Shasta is full of limestone caves. Me and my dog almost fell into one years ago. My brother saw the hole in time and screamed at us to stop but it was overgrown and very hard to spot. Not even the dog saw it. We most likely would have died as when we peered down into it we couldn't see bottom.
I live in shasta county and my uncle disappeared years ago off of Gilman rd/fenders ferry without a trace. His dog returned home but he was never seen again.
Watch his 411 series.
There are supposed to be accesses to inner earth, in and around Mount Shasta. In other words somewhat of a portal for entities from hades.

God bless you. I wish you the best possible outcome. That was a lovely tribute to Mr Ballen. Storytelling and the oral tradition runs strong in our culture and in cultures all over the world. It is a special way of sharing our history. By telling stories with your friends when you meet up with them, you carry on this tradition. And I think Mr Ballen wouldn't mind if you shared some of these stories with your friends also. You make an important contribution to this world and to your friends. May the White Light of Christ Surround you and Protect you.

I used to listen to scary stories in my hammock at night after hitching all day. I was a homeless traveler from 13 to 20. I ended up settling in Texas of all places but I got a really good job now, my dog really misses spanging the corner and sleeping in the woods but I'm over it.
God bless you, don’t forget God will always be there for you.
I would have had a heart attack. The one time that i went backpacking by myself i set up my tent at dusk and made a fire and all of a sudden coyotes surrounded my camp making some crazy cries. After i shouted them away i swear i kept seeing a person coming towards me. Needless to say i didn't even attempt to go to sleep. As soon as the sun came up i was so grateful and kind of felt like a tool for letting myself get so scared but i would never and have never went backpacking overnite alone again.

I never used to get freaked out by Mr Ballens stories... Until tonight. This is even a story I've watched once or twice before and it never bothered me.
Tonight the story made me recall when I was younger and used to do similar things to Matt. Like going exploring in wilderness country all by myself for days on end.
Tonight, after Matt's story, I thought of the danger I may have been in. How vulnerable I was to anything like Matts story.

How do we live in 2024 and people still go out in the wilderness unarmed?
Because I’d get arrested if I did Canada sucks the only place you can go in the woods and get eaten alive by a bear and get charged after your dead that’s how bad it is
Truly it boggles the mind! You should always be prepared, especially when you are alone.
I 100% agree unfortunately countys like mine Canada’ it’s illegal to carry almost all weapons anywhere, this is what blows my mind it’s illegal here to own body armour. We can’t protect or defend up here
Edit, the law up here basically says let the bad guy kill you and the government will do there best to find and prosecute them
Nothing matches the terror of being in a forest, knowing that you’re being hunted down and your instincts are literally screaming out danger signals.
Thats no bullshit either. Ive thru hiked both the AT and the PCT. The PCT was definitely a more rugged trail with alot less hikers. On the AT you can head out at alone, and it was literally impossible not to find hiking companions. Infact, it was a guarantee that you would meet people and fall in with a group. Theres just tons and tons of other hikers on the trail. Especially the first 1000 miles or so. Thats not the case at all on the PCT. If you are heading out alone there, you are ALONE, and will almost certainly be on your own. You go days and days without seeing a soul. It can be very isolating. And especially around Mt Shasta, its impossible not to think about all the people who have gone missing around there. It truly is an alarming number of people. This story sounds absolutely terrifying. Beyond terrifying. And its exactly why I'm NEVER unarmed when I'm in the forest. My .44 has gone with me on every single hike or expedition ive ever been on. I would not even consider being out there like that without it.

I usually take what someone else says with a grain of salt, but this is different. I'm usually mad when people do stories with no proof of the situation. I believe this because every step I think I would have done that exact same thing. I have had a group of people who wanted to do more than hurt me and I was so scared I got into fight or flight mode and reacted the same way flailing my knife everywhere. This is terrifying, imagine what you would feel in this situation.

As someone who has been “crazy” like involuntarily hospitalized crazy, it sounds like the guy was the one who was crazy, specifically psychosis. What he is describing is classic hallucination, down to the constant sensation of being followed and watched. My guess is after getting spooked and something stolen the first night he wasn’t sleeping anywhere near enough and that combined with the physical exhaustion caused him to enter a psychotic episode. It’s likely the episode resolved once he felt safe and was able to sleep for a long time in the motel. If the episode was induced by sleep deprivation getting some sleep would resolve it quickly.
I quit telling my kids, "keep that up, and you'll get hurt". Now, I simply say, "This looks like the beginning of a Ballen story", and then proceed to narrate exactly what they're doing. They stop the dumb thing immediately, but they do give me the eat sh!t look.

It’s not big mystery as someone with Bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms he had a psychotic episode that was likely due to a combination of sleep deprivation and physical exhaustion. My guess is after getting scared from the two people and having his food stolen (almost certainly by them) he stopped sleeping anywhere near enough. In fact, every thing aligns with this the fact that it took a few days for the “people” to show up again is because it takes a bit of time for sleep deprivation to cause the hallucinations to get that severe. Once he made it in town he got some sleep and then carried on but once he was away from civilization he probably stopped sleeping enough and… the symptoms returned. Once he was at the motel and felt safe he probably got enough sleep to the point the hallucinations subsided.
Like everything he described is classic psychosis. He had persecutory delusions (feelings of being followed and watched) and the footsteps and whispering come from everywhere… yup, classic hallucinations. Even seeing fair figure in your peripheral and the suddenly darting towards you and the sudden bright light… ya, classic textbook hallucinations.
