    Great news update thanks JP. Don’t know if you’ve read “The undoing project” by Michael Lewis, but it’s a pretty good take on the psychology behind decision making and how our minds can be fooled into thinking something is more probable than it is even if we are shown statistics to the contrary… anyway just thought I’d throw that out there. Enjoy your Thursday everyone.

    On a worrying note . Your moderators seem to clean the comment section. Which is such a shame as I enjoy reading them especially the back and forth replies . The Frontline update (may 8th) comments were really funny . Now it’s cleaned . Seeing only 42 comments on a 30+ minute frontline update is not a good sign . I can understand if it’s hate or aggressive speech.

    Not sure why this all took so long to decide on using Russian assets against them. If roles were reversed, do you think Russia would have waited to do the same thing? The West needs to start playing by the same rules, if it hopes to bring about a successful end to this conflict.

      So far, rus has already 'seized, nationalised & confiscated' western assets to the value of $107 billion, and the process continues....... There is a registered breakdown of this complete list and claimants filed against rus, in the same manner as 5,913 registered claimants against Cuba are still recorded from the 'nationalisation' in 1960. Cuba still owes this money, which now equals some $7 billion. Cuba could easily settle this amount since it only represents around 10% of GDP, but, their communist pride still appears to stand above the future prospects of the country......
      Rus will become the same by the end of this self-induced fiasco.

And while we are on the subject, JP recently said that real politik is about promising things that one can't deliver in order to get elected before one is elected. No that is populism. Real politik is about being pragmatic once one has been elected. There is a difference.

    The position of the Italian politics regarding the Ukraine war is interesting
    Italy has a longstanding relationship with Russia, however historically it has been the link between the Soviet communist party and the Italian communist party (which I think was the largest in Europe)
    Italy was wracked with political violence from the 60s to the 80s and the communists came very close to taking power in 1976 elections. The Italian communist party dissolved in 1991 with the fall of the USSR. A remarkable coincidence 😊
    As the Russians morphed from communist to fascist then so their influence on European politics has shifted from the far left to far right

    As to recruiting from prison; It is a tad rich to hear critiques from British sources when keeping in mind that during Cold War 1 there were more than a few British soldiers serving in BAOR (British Army On Rhine, Germany.) that had been given serving 'umpty' years in prison OR serving 'Half Umpty' years in Her Majesty's Armed Services (abroad). Meaning, serve in Germany with BAOR. Just thought to mention it.

      @@ATPGeo Tiens! I must have lived in the US for too long, but that doesn't change what I said by much. The Cold War (1) UK was using an 'enlightened' use of 'Jail-Mercenaries' in order to boost their recruitment when it appeared that the UK abolishment of conscription failed in that respect. And to be fair, many did come out of that service straightened out and with more skills than they came into it. That, however, is not among the likelyhoods in kinetic war-time.

    Exactly.. EDA, excess, means exactly that, excess... things not budgeted for anymore, not needed anymore, or has been replaced... the president cannot take anything that is currently active, budgeted for, and still actively used unless it is outside of the budgeted amount to maintain and use. It is against the law in the US.. which is why people continously talk about the US having over 100 patriot launchers... a launcher is worthless without the entire battery, phased array radar, command center, etc. The US had 16 full patriot batteries, gave Ukraine 1, left 15... which are in active service, budgeted for, and the US is actually trying to add more patriot batteries to its current force but cannot meet recruiting requirements for it right now. But the 15 active batteries cannont be legally touched.. 6 of them are currently in use, 9 are in a state of readiness in case of a war, they will deploy with and protect US personnel and equipment in that theater. This started back in ww2 before the US got actively involved, we were sending equipment to allies, some politicians were advocating for taking equipment from active units to send, while other politicians saw that as a threat to our own readiness, if/when the US was drawn in or decided to intervene they wouldn't have equipment for their own forces to fight with... so the EDA and readiness laws were passed, budgeting for inservice equipment, new equipment, replacement, strategic reserves, etc. Law gave president authority to send weapons and equipment but not at the cost of losing out own combat ability and readiness. Send anything that is not being used, maintained, in active service, basically if we have it but its not in the long form dept of defense budget, then we can send it..

      That post you read goes back to what i said awhile back.. the Biden admin didnt use lend lease at all, they delayed approval for F-16s, denied tanks for awhile, same with atacms. Theyve openly talked about degrading the Russian military over outright Ukraine victory, which was 1 problem the GOP had for approving more aid, and now requiring a plan for victory. Yes the GOP wanted some domestic issues addressed as well, but they were never against helping Ukraine, they wanted dems and this admin to handle both domestic issues and foreign aid, but also show it wasnt being wasted with no chance or plan for Ukraine to win.

    What’s the purpose of the legal system? I see two. One is too punish criminals as a deterrent. The other is to keep the public safe from dangerous people.
    The first one can e served by mobilizing the criminal as long as it doesn’t compromise the second one.

    • @ATPGeo
      @ATPGeo  Před 22 dny +2

      yeah, so often seen in 3 ways: 1) retribution 2) deterrence and 3) rehabilitation. But you can add separation from society to keep society safe as another dimension.

    David Axe is correct, and Colby is wrong............."The Military Departments determine what is or is not excess. Equipment which has been transferred from the Military Departments to the Defense Logistics Agency, Disposition Services, is also available for transfer through the EDA program if an eligible foreign government makes known its requirements for the equipment. ".. It's not just weapons it's everything. @@colbybadhwar4927 Thank you for getting back to me. I respect your writing very much. I did military contracting for 23 years. Ran the GSA contract for high end developer software. Including classified titles I was not allowed to even view. Biden can send Ukraine anything he wants up to 500 million per Calander year. He only needs to notify congress for any shipment over 7 million. The complicated aspect is how each EDA item is valued. We cannot send an EDA item for less than what we could sell it to another country, corporation or individual for. I really only disagree with you on what Biden can send.........the truth is anything.......
      The items must be drawn from existing
      Defense Department stocks;
      The Defense Department cannot buy or repair the items for the purpose of transferring them;
      Giving up the defense articles must not harm the U.S. armed forces' level of readiness;
      Transfers on a grant basis must be preferable to the transfers on a sales basis, after taking into account the potential proceeds from and likelihood of such sales and comparative foreign policy benefits of a grant or sale; and
      The transfer must not harm the U.S. technological and industrial base, and must not compete with the sale of a new or used article. This is straight from EDA.

Yes EDA can theoretically be used for virtually anything but a lot of people believe that he can unilaterally declare defense articles as excess or value them at $0 and send them to Ukraine. He obviously can't do that.

    Repairing damaged power generation before the war ends is a fools errand as russia will just keep on targeting them
    So for now it is diesel generators & batteries to make micro grids that are a lot harder to target .
    Then when russia surrenders the micro / local grids can turn into renewable power grids using wind & solar.
    Archimedes in Holland have just released a series of amazing spiral sail windmills that go for a few grand & can power several houses providing the wind is there.
    They are install in a day , plug & play units so could be rolled out right across Ukraine in a few days .
    Perhaps a suitable item for public donations

      A big enough Archimedes Liam wind turbine ( most efficient on the market ) will be a touch over $ 10,000 because you need 2 of them per household. So that is around 100 billion for wind generators alone + solar cells + inverters + batteries so getting close to 200 billion and that is just for domestic power so giving will not be within Ukraines budget .
