Is it normal for a baby to start crawling at 3 and a half months old? Our baby girl just started crawling yesterday doing the commando crawl after learning to roll from her back to stomach a week earlier. Today she’s moving forward about 2 feet in 5 minutes. It seems this earlier to begin crawling but this is our first baby and we’re not sure what the averages are for baby development other than what we read from Google. Thanks

I had been doing all these things and by 10 months my daughter still wasn't crawling so on that day, I decided to pull out pieces of cheese and put them on the floor to give her extra motivation...well, lo and behold, she didn't start crawling but instead pulled herself up into a standing position from the ground up by herself without leaning on anything 😳 She learned to crawl just as she learned to walk by 10 and a half months!
I've been doing every activity I find by oc therapists on CZcams with my son and even put him in outfits that his knees and feet are not covered and he was still having difficulty staying in crawling position. I realized at the end of this video that his padded carpet was too slick and I moved the carpet and put him on the hardwood floor. Now he can hold the position on his own without support! I knew it had to be something I was doing wrong because he rocks and bounces in crawling position already and I've felt like he was on the verge of crawling for a while now. Thank you for that last bit at the end! I've heard that before but it clicked when you said the baby would push themselves backward, which is what my son has been doing. So, thank you!
As a Mum of an 8 month old I can completely confirm that our little one seems to have blossomed since she started crawling. She's so cheeky, so happy and seems to be learning new things everyday!

Thank you so much. My son is now 7 months old. He has started to show signs for wanting to crawl at 5 months, but had no hands support yet and just did tons of "swimming" on his belly, but right at 6 months he has learned to flip to his back by himself and right away has learned by himself full straight arm support, lifting his chest from the floor and saw also that he moved his one or another leg under him or even very rarely stood for 1 second on all of his 4 but fell right away on his belly. And still does that "swimming". Today he's 7 months old, I see that he wants to crawl but just moves backwards all the time on his hands. I want to teach him how to crawl right and I really hope that your lessons will really help us to crawl and stop with his moving backwards on his hands and belly + "swimming"...
My 7 months is the same, loves swimming and wants to move forward but instead goes backwards when he’s fully stretched supporting his chest. I will remove the playing mat since it seems slippery and try it on carpet. Any tips on your son’s success?
I can hardly wait my baby daughter to wake up so that we may try these tips. I was making that small mistake of trying to get her to crawl with pants and socks on. This revelation about traction is going to make a big difference. Thanks for your great videos.

Your videos are amazing and a lifeline to us. My son has Down's Syndrome and we have no Physio support for him at present. I have been studying these videos to help him. He is 14 months and very comfortable on his tummy, propped up with his arms outstretched. He can roll every which way very easily. And he kind of drags himself across the floor slowly to get around (army crawl). But when I try and put him in a crawling position, like shown in the video in exercise 1, he really struggles. I tuck his knees underneath him as shown but he really wants to push his legs out to the side and can't manage to stay with them tucked underneath him. Even if I use the rolled up towel technique, or over my leg. Any tips to strengthen him so he can hold that crawling position even just for a few seconds and not have his legs go out to the side? Thanks!
Our baby started belly/commando crawling at 5 months. He has just turned 6 months and still does the belly crawling. How can I help him use his hands and knees, as when I position him correctly he holds the position for a few seconds and then drops back onto his tummy for the belly crawling. I'm not yet a parent, though my fiance and I are hoping we will be within the next 5 years or so. I've been watching your channel so much just to educate myself because my main concern has always be "What if I majorly muck it up?" Emma, you should write a book!!! I would buy!! I know encyclopedias are outdated, but they are also timeless! My hope is that every parent educates themselves on the options they have in rearing their children, and do their part to reduce their own misunderstandings of behavior.
My boy is about to be 10 months and no crawling only face planting , rolling around and pivoting! Hopeful one day he wakes up and BOOM 💥 starts to crawl
Thanks for the video! Getting our baby to crawl has been a journey. He’s nearly 12 months and can hardly crawl. We have an ot consult scheduled in six weeks (soonest we could get) After he started rolling he would always roll out of tummy time and is just so content and calm.
Hi, my first child (now 6) crawled at 15 months and walked at 2. Looking at her now, you'd never think she was 'late'. It turns out she had hypermobility in her legs, supportive shoes and practising walking up and down the stairs really strengthened her legs. Hope your little one gets some help after the appointment!
Hi Emma, my baby has started army crawl and she is about to 11 months by few days. I will try these Exercises so that she starts classical crawl. She can lift herself when I do that but comes to tummy position as she moves forward or try to and cry. Please help me especially the case when they know army crawl and know they can grab things how to motivate such a baby??
Hi these are great tips and you make some critical points! Thank you! But a side question... My nephew seems to be held a lot and I believe he is getting used to that so when you put him down he is uncomfortable and starts to cry. Unless we are sitting on the ground playing with him he will be happy and he will roll around but hasn't gotten into that crawling position. He is 10 months.. If I am doing tummy time with him and using your tips and he starts crying, do I let him cry?
Will definitely try these tips. Thank you. If my 7.5mth old boy hardly ever rolls, is this a cause for concern? He's done it before but during tummy time, even when tired he will grunt and complain rather than roll from tummy to back. He's super active and virtually never lays still otherwise
Hi Nick, I wouldn't be concerned. What you can do though, is every time your little one grunts or complains to let you know that he wants to roll from his tummy to his back help him complete this movement and physically roll him over. That's exactly what my little girl did one month ago. She would even cry because she could turn from her back to the tummy, but not the other way around. I tried to let her do it herself for a while, tried to encourage her to roll on the back by helping her make the right movement, but it never really worked, she never did it herself. She would play on her tummy, then begin to grunt and then after a while she would cry and then I had to help her and put her on her back again. Now she loves to stay on her tummy, she tries to move in every direction when she's on her tummy, she's beginning to crawl (only very little though), but she still won't turn from her tummy to the back. It doesn't really concern me much since she's still learning new things everyday, but I wonder why that is...
Omg thank you for this. My baby is still not crawling at 9 months. She can get into her position but then can’t move forward and falls down. Definitely trying to take her pants off so she can have some grip!!

Please make a video on how to accelerate standing and walking. My baby completed 16months and just started standing on her own for 1 or 2 seconds. I want to speed up this and make her walk.
I'm having a problem with my 9 month old son, when he gets in a crawling position he slides on his tummy and then throws a tantrum because he can't move forward. He also seems more interested in walking instead, as he can pull himself up into standing position and insists on attempting to walk. I will be trying some of these techniques to try get him to crawl, because I can see he gets frustrated that he cannot move about to where he wants by himself. Thank you for this video
Do you have any advice to encourage a baby to use her arms more? She's seven months old, has a very strong back and neck and does plenty of tummy time. But as soon as she gets on her knees she rolls to either side instead of using her arms to lift her body up. Thank you very much!
My 7 month old has been army crawling since he was 5 months. He is so fast and gets around so well, I'm a little concerned that he will rely on that instead of transitioning to hands and knees crawling. If I put him in the 4 point position, he falls out immediately as he lunges forward. He'll even crawl over my leg and keep army crawling onward, I just can't keep him still in the 4 point position for long. I'd love more advice on this transition in particular. Thanks!
@@petal8829 my daughter army crawled from 5 months by 7 months started pulling herself up on furniture to stand up and walked by 9 months. She never really crawled. Every child is different.
Hello, my 8 month old baby can do the 4 point position and rock a little, but any time she wants to reach forward, she slides forward out of that to reach (so pushing on her feet doesn't help), then wants to roll over (whether she gets the toy or not). If I try to flip her legs under her body, she pushes back. Is there a way to combat this?
Great question! Fortunately wooden floors do not hurt their knees because a baby’s patella is initially made from cartilage, which is softer than bone. Eventually the cartilage will turn into bone but not until your little one is a toddler or a bit older.

Hi! It is really common for bubs to initially push themselves backwards when crawling. And if they are crawling while wearing long pants on a slippery surface, crawling backwards is a given. Placing your hands on the soles of your little one’s feet to give them something to push off should help them learn to crawl in a forward direction. Also make sure their legs are exposed so they can get traction.
For some reason my grand daughter doesn't want to crawl, or when she tries going forward reaching for something she land on her stomach and stay there. I tried holding her under her stomach on all four and even trying the towel method. Every time I do these things, she starts to cry and turn her body around. I'm not sure what to do next..

Sounds like she needs a bit more time to build up the strength required to stay in the crawling position. I would just wait and with time she will get there

My baby boy is 7months now and he still wont push on his arms... i have to put on a story/nursery rhimes on the ipad and elevate it for him to look up. He prefers to sit up instead of playing on tummy. I started to let him stand on knees and play on elevated surfaces ect. Any advice or tips for this?

He’s crawling backwards since 4 months, but now he’s almost 7 months he doesn’t move his hand in turn instead he crawls forward like a seal😅 He can turn 360 with his arms just doesn’t do that when crawling. Is there any tips to teach him or it doesn’t matter?
Hi Joanne! So glad you have found these videos helpful. It sounds like your little one is army crawling and pivoting (turning 360 when on tummy). These are great skills which bubs usually learn to master before they start crawling. It sounds like your little one is strong enough to start with the first activity mentioned in this video and then progress as he gets stronger. Hope that helps!

My 9 month old seems to refuse to crawl. She finally started rolling around 7 months but she’s so stubborn. I moved all her toys to the edge of her playmat so she just lays there staring at me. When I try to get her to practice crawling or even putting weight on her arms she just wants to roll out of it. I’ll keep trying with these tips.

Thanks for the video suggestion! I have found with my own kids the earliest they start using a balance bike is around 2 - 2.5 years of age. They generally have more success initially with a trike when they are under 2 years of age but the down side is they don't use it for long before they move onto a balance bike. Hope that helps!

My baby is in his 9th month. He is going on all fours, rocking back and forth, then tries to crawl, brings one foot front then he goes down and comes forward. He repeats this to move instead of crawling normally. Goes on all fours and pushes his body to the front and falls on his tummy. Is this normal. But he is standing by holding my hands. Hi! As you have noticed when little ones want to get to a location ASAP they will revert back to the quickest way which might mean switching to army crawling. As your little one gets stronger and more confident crawling, it will be more efficient for her to crawl and she will stop army crawling. It is just giving her more time to develop.

My 6mo has started to crawl like a worm. He gets up on all fours, pushes weight forward onto both hands and extends both his legs at the same time to move forward, then lifts his butt up first to get onto all fours, etc. How can I help him discover how to alternate his arms and legs?

Hi! It sounds like your little one needs more time to get stronger in the 4 point position. She still has a lot of time to master crawling. Just let her continue to have tummy time and get into the 4 point position and with time, as she gets stronger, she will start crawling.
My daughter was walking at 9 half months old she’s 6 now. My other daughter is 7 half months and won’t crawl, I know children are different but it’s starting to stress me out that she isn’t, I know I shouldn’t compare but I can’t help it I feel like I’m letting her down .
My baby just turned 6 months and she just refuses to use her arms. We do tummy time all the time and she put her arms to her side. I'll keep putting her hands back in front, but back to the side they go. Any suggestions on how I can encourage her to use her arms more and hopefully start pushing herself up soon?
Hi! It sounds like your little one might be doing the Landau reflex which emerges some time between 3 - 5 months of age. It is an automatic reflex that occurs when bubs are placed on their tummy and they lift their head, their arms and legs lift as well making them look like they are swimming or doing the superman pose. With time it should decrease. But in the mean time you can get out a toy that your little one only gets during tummy time, as this may encourage her to place her hands on the ground to play with the toy. Alternatively, you can place a rolled up towel underneath your little ones chest when in the tummy time position as this will make it easier to push up through her arms. Hope that helps!

Imagine asking someone on the internet how long untill your baby can crawl. These small motherfuckers can take up to a year before they start crawling. Aint no one gonna know how long untill your baby hits a certain milestone. It is impossible to predict 🤣

It sounds like it might be a bit too early for your little one to get into the crawling position. She sounds like she needs a bit more time to build up her strength. She still had lots of time to master crawling. It is a skill bubs learn anywhere from 8-13 months.
my 7 months old doesn't show any sign of crawling, he hates tummy time and he rolls from tummy to back one side only. And when he is on tummy side he don't know how to push up his arms. I am a bit concerned.

My 11 month old army crawls with one foot only an is skipping crawling. An she may also be developing foot drop she drags her foot a bit. She can pull herself up on things an uses her sit in walker just fine pushes her self everywhere in it. I'm worried she can have foot drop tho. Will crawling help her cure it
Hi! if you’re worried your little one has foot drop and you have noticed that she is only using one leg then it might be a good idea to check in with her doctor to see if there is a reason and what you can do to help.
It's great that your little one is army crawling. Hopefully the physical therapy can start soon. While waiting for physical therapy if your little one isn't yet able to move into and out of sitting I would try and encourage him to do that. Also continuing to provide him with lots of floor time play lying on his tummy will help to strengthen his arms so that when he is ready, he can maintain the crawling position. Hi, my first child (now 6) crawled at 15 months and walked at 2. Looking at her now, you'd never think she was 'late'. It turns out she had hypermobility in her legs, supportive shoes and practising walking up and down the stairs really strengthened her legs.

Hi Emma, my baby has started army crawl and she is about to 11 months by few days. I will try these Exercises so that she starts classical crawl. She can lift herself when I do that but comes to tummy position as she moves forward or try to and cry. Please help me especially the case when they know army crawl and know they can grab things how to motivate such a baby??

Hi these are great tips and you make some critical points! Thank you! But a side question... My nephew seems to be held a lot and I believe he is getting used to that so when you put him down he is uncomfortable and starts to cry. Unless we are sitting on the ground playing with him he will be happy and he will roll around but hasn't gotten into that crawling position. He is 10 months.. If I am doing tummy time with him and using your tips and he starts crying, do I let him cry?

If my 7.5mth old boy hardly ever rolls, is this a cause for concern? He's done it before but during tummy time, even when tired he will grunt and complain rather than roll from tummy to back. He's super active and virtually never lays still otherwise
Hi Nick, I wouldn't be concerned. What you can do though, is every time your little one grunts or complains to let you know that he wants to roll from his tummy to his back help him complete this movement and physically roll him over. That's exactly what my little girl did one month ago. She would even cry because she could turn from her back to the tummy, but not the other way around. I tried to let her do it herself for a while, tried to encourage her to roll on the back by helping her make the right movement, but it never really worked, she never did it herself. She would play on her tummy, then begin to grunt and then after a while she would cry and then I had to help her and put her on her back again. Now she loves to stay on her tummy, she tries to move in every direction when she's on her tummy, she's beginning to crawl (only very little though), but she still won't turn from her tummy to the back. It doesn't really concern me much since she's still learning new things everyday, but I wonder why that is...

Omg thank you for this. My baby is still not crawling at 9 months. She can get into her position but then can’t move forward and falls down. Definitely trying to take her pants off so she can have some grip!!
Hope it helps! She might also just need more time to build up strength and coordination. In time she should master this skill.
My little one refuses to let me even bend their knees for the crawl position even though they are stongly holding their front up

I'm having a problem with my 9 month old son, when he gets in a crawling position he slides on his tummy and then throws a tantrum because he can't move forward. He also seems more interested in walking instead, as he can pull himself up into standing position and insists on attempting to walk.
I will be trying some of these techniques to try get him to crawl, because I can see he gets frustrated that he cannot move about to where he wants by himself. Thank you for this video

Any tips on teaching baby to stop scooting and do the 4 point crawl? My twins just push around with their hands and drag their legs with them.
Do you have any advice to encourage a baby to use her arms more? She's seven months old, has a very strong back and neck and does plenty of tummy time. But as soon as she gets on her knees she rolls to either side instead of using her arms to lift her body up. Thank you very much!

My 7 month old has been army crawling since he was 5 months. He is so fast and gets around so well, I'm a little concerned that he will rely on that instead of transitioning to hands and knees crawling. If I put him in the 4 point position, he falls out immediately as he lunges forward. He'll even crawl over my leg and keep army crawling onward, I just can't keep him still in the 4 point position for long. I'd love more advice on this transition in particular. Thanks!

@@petal8829 my daughter army crawled from 5 months by 7 months started pulling herself up on furniture to stand up and walked by 9 months. She never really crawled. Every child is different.

Hello, my 8 month old baby can do the 4 point position and rock a little, but any time she wants to reach forward, she slides forward out of that to reach (so pushing on her feet doesn't help), then wants to roll over (whether she gets the toy or not). If I try to flip her legs under her body, she pushes back. Is there a way to combat this?
My daughter is doing the same thing, any advice now that it’s been a while for you ?

Do wooden floors hurt their knees?
Great question! Fortunately wooden floors do not hurt their knees because a baby’s patella is initially made from cartilage, which is softer than bone. Eventually the cartilage will turn into bone but not until your little one is a toddler or a bit older.

Hi! It is really common for bubs to initially push themselves backwards when crawling. And if they are crawling while wearing long pants on a slippery surface, crawling backwards is a given. Placing your hands on the soles of your little one’s feet to give them something to push off should help them learn to crawl in a forward direction. Also make sure their legs are exposed so they can get traction.
For some reason my grand daughter doesn't want to crawl, or when she tries going forward reaching for something she land on her stomach and stay there. I tried holding her under her stomach on all four and even trying the towel method. Every time I do these things, she starts to cry and turn her body around. I'm not sure what to do next..
I have been doing the supported crawling position for 2 weeks ...my 1 year old is able to support herself now on knees if I put her in the position...but after a couple of seconds she pushes back and starts crawling on tummy again... she's really very delayed in movement and I am worried 😟

Sounds like she needs a bit more time to build up the strength required to stay in the crawling position. I would just wait and with time she will get there

My baby boy is 7months now and he still wont push on his arms... i have to put on a story/nursery rhimes on the ipad and elevate it for him to look up. He prefers to sit up instead of playing on tummy. I started to let him stand on knees and play on elevated surfaces ect. Any advice or tips for this?

He’s crawling backwards since 4 months, but now he’s almost 7 months he doesn’t move his hand in turn instead he crawls forward like a seal😅 He can turn 360 with his arms just doesn’t do that when crawling. It sounds like your little one is army crawling and pivoting (turning 360 when on tummy). These are great skills which bubs usually learn to master before they start crawling. It sounds like your little one is strong enough to start with the first activity mentioned in this video and then progress as he gets stronger. Hope that helps!

My 9 month old seems to refuse to crawl. She finally started rolling around 7 months but she’s so stubborn. I moved all her toys to the edge of her playmat so she just lays there staring at me. When I try to get her to practice crawling or even putting weight on her arms she just wants to roll out of it. I’ll keep trying with these tips.

Thanks for the video suggestion! I have found with my own kids the earliest they start using a balance bike is around 2 - 2.5 years of age. They generally have more success initially with a trike when they are under 2 years of age but the down side is they don't use it for long before they move onto a balance bike.

My baby is in his 9th month. He is going on all fours, rocking back and forth, then tries to crawl, brings one foot front then he goes down and comes forward. He repeats this to move instead of crawling normally. Goes on all fours and pushes his body to the front and falls on his tummy. Is this normal. But he is standing by holding my hands. Hi! As you have noticed when little ones want to get to a location ASAP they will revert back to the quickest way which might mean switching to army crawling. As your little one gets stronger and more confident crawling, it will be more efficient for her to crawl and she will stop army crawling. It is just giving her more time to develop.
So I have a question, my almost 7 month old isn’t rolling over yet. He can do it but it’s just like he doesn’t want to almost. I’ve watched you’re red flag signs and he doesn’t have any of those problems but I’m starting to get concerned. He will move and push up but he just wont roll.
My 6mo has started to crawl like a worm. He gets up on all fours, pushes weight forward onto both hands and extends both his legs at the same time to move forward, then lifts his butt up first to get onto all fours, etc. How can I help him discover how to alternate his arms and legs?

Hi! It sounds like your little one needs more time to get stronger in the 4 point position. She still has a lot of time to master crawling. Just let her continue to have tummy time and get into the 4 point position and with time, as she gets stronger, she will start crawling.
My daughter was walking at 9 half months old she’s 6 now.

My baby just turned 6 months and she just refuses to use her arms. We do tummy time all the time and she put her arms to her side. I'll keep putting her hands back in front, but back to the side they go. Any suggestions on how I can encourage her to use her arms more and hopefully start pushing herself up soon?
Hi! It sounds like your little one might be doing the Landau reflex which emerges some time between 3 - 5 months of age. It is an automatic reflex that occurs when bubs are placed on their tummy and they lift their head, their arms and legs lift as well making them look like they are swimming or doing the superman pose. With time it should decrease. But in the mean time you can get out a toy that your little one only gets during tummy time, as this may encourage her to place her hands on the ground to play with the toy. Alternatively, you can place a rolled up towel underneath your little ones chest when in the tummy time position as this will make it easier to push up through her arms.

Imagine asking someone on the internet how long untill your baby can crawl. These small motherfuckers can take up to a year before they start crawling. Aint no one gonna know how long untill your baby hits a certain milestone. It is impossible to predict 🤣

It sounds like it might be a bit too early for your little one to get into the crawling position. She sounds like she needs a bit more time to build up her strength.
She still had lots of time to master crawling. It is a skill bubs learn anywhere from 8-13 months.

My 11 month old army crawls with one foot only an is skipping crawling. An she may also be developing foot drop she drags her foot a bit. She can pull herself up on things an uses her sit in walker just fine pushes her self everywhere in it. I'm worried she can have foot drop tho. Will crawling help her cure it
Hi! if you’re worried your little one has foot drop and you have noticed that she is only using one leg then it might be a good idea to check in with her doctor to see if there is a reason and what you can do to help.

My one year army crawls, he is supposed to start physical therapy but it's taking forever. He sits with his knees under him but won't crawl that way
It's great that your little one is army crawling. Hopefully the physical therapy can start soon.
While waiting for physical therapy if your little one isn't yet able to move into and out of sitting I would try and encourage him to do that. Also continuing to provide him with lots of floor time play lying on his tummy will help to strengthen his arms so that when he is ready, he can maintain the crawling position.
