Funnily enough "The Germans" episode was not shown in Germany until the 90s due to fear of causing offence. In reality the satirical self mocking nature went down a storm with the German public, turned out they do indeed have a sense of humour.

Makes sense. It is mocking a certain type of British man/attitude rather than any German. It's like when they banned Speedy Gonzales to avoid upsetting Mexicans...except he was one of the few positive representations of Mexicans in western popular culture and was loved in Mexico.

Not strictly true as, according to Cleese, the money made from his one-man show years ago, plus his share of the revenue from Python’s farewell stage show was sufficient to pay off his alimony. He made his final payment in 2015 and commented in interview that he’s now free and only works if it’s something that interests him. Unless he’s now divorcing Jennifer Wade, which seems unlikely as the press photographed them shopping in London together in April, and they seemed happy enough together then.

Yeah I grew up with a lot of these. But now, if you do some of these, someone sitting in front of a computer, most likely privileged enough to be without a job, and living in a nice neighborhood will get so offended, they'll be frothing in the mouth 30 seconds in. After which, they'll start a chain reaction among the handful of loud obnoxious muppets, crying and moaning like someone stole all their Ranch dressing. The din is aggravating enough that society finally succumbs to their whining, despite the voices of reason among most folks, whose heads are screwed on correctly.

According to my late grandma, the thought police were very active in the 70s and 80s, severely limiting the scope of comedy. She loved Python, Black Adder, Fawlty Towers and all that. When lockdown hit, I got her an iPad and we watched the likes of Frankie Boyle and Steve Hughes together on Zoom and she would literally be bent over, crying with laughter. She felt she'd waited for comedy like that all her life.
      👁 👁
      👄
So I think the only difference is that social media allows the people you describe to vent their outrage but thankfully the days of state censorship are over (for now) - at least in the UK.
Maybe it's different where you live, but in the UK a good laugh always trumps the whiny complains of the p.c. brigade.
