  • In the Nicene Creed, we confess that we believe in “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.” But what do we mean by this confession? In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul explains the meaning of this basic confession regarding the nature of the church.

I thank Christ Jesus, my Lord, for delivering me from the empty religiosity of Romanism, and bringing me to the knowledge of his salvation. All the works, rituals, ceremony, theatre and tradition of old Babylon, I now consider garbage, compared to knowing the living God. All glory to the Father, who reconciled a people to Himself, through His Son. It is in Christ himself -- not in religion or works -- that the sinner has been redeemed. What Good News!

@@darcie7773 I constantly remember my dear family before God in prayer, and all Roman Catholics, that the Lord would have mercy on them as He did for me, a sinner. I ask God that He would open their ears to the Good News, and that they would forsake religion (ritual, sacraments, the tradition of men, 'good works' etc), for the Salvation that comes in Christ Jesus, our Lord. I do believe that there are Catholics, Muslims, Jews, and other religionists around the world who are being saved even now, because God shows no favouritism, and calls all peoples -- from every tribe and tongue -- to come to repentance. Jesus, the Messiah, is a Light to the nations. Yes, even in the Roman system, a sinner can be reconciled to God, and in due time, that redeemed person will be led by the Spirit to leave his religion (often at very great cost), but the Lord will sustain him. All glory to the Almighty!

Besides, who decides when you've had enough in the fires of hell that you can be released? You or God? Can't be God because the bible clearly states that it is appointed unto a man once to die then face the JUDGEMENT.
Once you've been judged to be short of the glory of God you go to hell and then into the eternal lake of fire. No purgatory, no escape either. Catholics are simply fooling themselves believing the lie.

@Rodrick Evans Your old testament the protestant Bible was rewritten after the last revolt by the Pharisee Rabbi as reaction to their loss of the revolt. The Hebrew Bible didn't exist after the exile to Babylon in 585AD, the Jewish slaves returned to Israel speaking the language of their masters the Babylonians which was Aramaic a related language but Not Hebrew. The Greeks conquered Israel and ruled it for close to 300 years, the Jews was Greek speaking subjects of the Greek empire and continued to speak and write Greek even after the Romans conquered Israel. The old testament was rewritten in Greek in Alexandria because the Jews lost their Aramaic. Jesus read the Greek old testament in the synagogue and the apostles and Paul quote from it. So your Moses garbage is just garbage. The old testament you use was used to reject Christ by stripping the Greek books that supports Christ. The old testament you accept which Jesus never saw, the Apostles never saw and Paul had been dead 80 years before it existed. If you accept that old testament why not Simon Bar Kokhba who the writers of your old testament selected as the Messiah instead of Christ.
All apostolic Christians accept the Septuagint not something from 145 years after christ's birth.

Why would the pope say, " a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is a dangerous thing." It's contrary to our belief and is blasphemous to the Gospel. Yes, everybody makes mistakes. But, the bible says the bishop must be blameless. How much more the pope? Just as Jesus was blameless, we who teach the word and lead people to Jesus Christ ought to make sure we teach truth according to the Word of God. No one is worthy to step into Jesus sandles or even latch them. Who is worthy? We are deciples, followers of Christ and apostles, teachers of Christ. NO man can stand in the place of Jesus and make sacrifices for the mass. It's not biblical. Jesus died once and for all. He said, "It is finished." All former things have passed and a new covenant was made.

It is sad that you, Rebecca do not understand the 'paradoxical' use of language that the Pope uses. As a paradox the meaning is just the opposite to the statement. It actually means that having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ demands that one has to give up all worldly ways, that one cannot continue to live according tot he 'flesh'. In that sense it is 'dangerous' to a worldly life style to which one is used to.

This is false teaching of Rome. Do you know that the passover lamb is not a sin or redemption offering? Its an obedience offering and faith that God will deliver his firstborn sons from death. This is what happened as Hebrews 5:7, Isaiah 53, Psalms 18, 22, and many others teach you. Its a metaphor for YOU. If you obey God's commands he will deliver you. Why do you think you were told to pick up your own cross and your old man must be die (Adam). If Jesus died for your sins he should have died on the day of atonement and he if he paid the wages for your sins, he should be in hell forever for you. Unfortunately the catholic church and her mystery religion led believers into pagan idolatry. Worshipping a man as God is an abomination that Jesus warned you not to be deceived by.

The Catholics record of London Ontario - Sept 1, 1923 states,
"Sunday is our mark of authority... the church is above the Bible and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact." THIS STILL STANDS TODAY.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OBSERVING SUNDAY OR THE SABBATH WILL BE DETRIMENTAL TO OUR FAITH. Deut 7:4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.
Josh 24:15 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
We cannot follow the traditions of old. From grandmother to mother to daughter. Search truth in the Word of God.
Mk7:5-9 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? 6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. They don't pray to them, they ask for their intercession. The custom to pray for the dead comes from Judaism (even today many Jews have a custom to pray for their dead). The development to ask for the intercession of the saints comes from the belief in older Christian Traditions (Orthodox, Coptic, Oriental Orthodox, Catholic, Eastern Catholic, etc) that there is no separation between the Church on earth (Church Militant) and the Church in heaven (the Church Triumphant). The saints are those Christians who finished the race and are in heaven constantly praying for us (i.e. the cloud of witnesses) and why older Christian Traditions ask for their intercession. Protestant denominations have a significantly different understanding of life after death and the composition of the Church, which is one of the reasons Protestants don't have a custom of praying for the dead nor for asking for the intercession of saints.

@@bornagainsaint1friend, I can only encourage you to dive deeper into the theology and history behind it. Don't just compare Protestantism to one church (the Catholic Church). Look into the history of saints and how it is understood by the Orthodox and Coptic Orthodox as well, for example. The practice has been part of Christianity from the beginning. Athanasius, for example, the defender of Christ's incarnation speaks about it; so did Basil the Great who at his time became one of the biggest defenders of the Holy Spirit in the trinity as doubts about the Holy Trinity arose. Of course Christ is the mediator, but if we're going to be consistent with the claim that we should only ever go directly to Christ for help then let's stop asking for prayer requests from anyone, ever, as we should only be directing our requests directly to Christ himself. If I said I don't need friends, my pastor, or my family praying for me because I should only go directly to Christ himself for prayer would you agree with me? I hope not.

He would have been far more clear about us being as baptized children or kids with no sin. Either way, I know my tiny tiny babies and really small children in my family have NO sin cuz they CAN'T and it's NOT fair at all that innocent little children would carry "sin" they know nothing about. One of my pet peeves: a Protestant teacher who doesn't believe in the teaching authority of the Catholic Church just takes a teaching of a Catholic Church council, adopts it as true, then ignores that it came from the Catholic Church. Finally, the protestant teacher modifies what it means to avoid the uncomfortable aspects of the teaching -- i.e. we know all believers are "one" because it is invisible. They make this modification because no on could claim that ANY protestant denomination is "catholic" or universal. Especially in this example -- the Catholic Church adopted these 4 characteristics to define something ABOUT ITSELF. One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic. No Protestant Church can claim to be one, catholic, or apostolic. And holy is a stretch since they were all founded by men (rather than Christ himself).

St. Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, in "Epistle to the Smyrnaeans", in the year 110 AD, writes:
"See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."
St. Irenaeus, bishop of Lyon, in "Against Heresies", Chapter 3, par. 2, in the year 180 AD, writes:
"Since, however, it would be very tedious, in such a volume as this, to reckon up the successions of all the Churches, we do put to confusion all those who, in whatever manner, whether by an evil self-pleasing, by vainglory, or by blindness and perverse opinion, assemble in unauthorized meetings; [we do this, I say,] by indicating that tradition derived from the apostles, of the very great, the very ancient, and universally known Church founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles, Peter and Paul; as also [by pointing out] the faith preached to men, which comes down to our time by means of the successions of the bishops. For it is a matter of necessity that every Church should agree with this Church, on account of its preeminent authority, that is, the faithful everywhere, inasmuch as the tradition has been preserved continuously by those [faithful men] who exist everywhere."
So you see, what the early christians understood as Catholic Church is the Church established by the Apostles, the most important one being the roman one, established by Peter and Paul. St. Irenaeus in his second century "Against Heresies" talks about the apostolical succession of the Popes, naming all the bishops of Rome (Peter, then Linus, then Anacletus, then Clement, etc). The great historian Eusebius of Cesarea, in his work "Church History", written around year ~300 AD, also talks about the apostolical succession in Rome and other cities.

Denise Braganza You can't condemn ALL Christians because of a few bad apples. Look at many people from the bible like King David and King Solomon. King David returned to God after his great sins thru true repentance, but after much loss, like many of us. King Solomon was a man of the outward appearance and filled his temple with money and gold. Jesus rebuked the temple because of their outward appearances, laws and traditions but no change in their hearts. You can't say, God only is here in this place, How ignorant is that? Jesus who is the Word of God speaks for God because he is God. Jesus is the church wherever the people are joined together in his name, (Bible hearers and doers of the word) not traditional keepers. I think only small minded people would think God is only here or there. POPE FRANCES WHO SHOULD KNOW WHAT GOD'S WORD SAYS BUT TEACHES CONTRARY, IS BLASPHEMY, STRAIGHT OUT. IF YOU DEPEND ON SOMEONE WHO THINKS HIS WORDS ARE GREATER THAN JESUS, YOU ARE SETTING YOURSELF UP. THE POPE HOLDS A HIGH PLACE FOR A PEOPLE AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SO WRONG.

The RCC took out the 2nd commandment because they don’t want to face the truth that they do worship dead people and idols.
They don’t want to face conviction of their sin of idolatry.
So in order to avoid conviction of idolatry this same church uses the wrong scripture to support their idolatry.

  • @TuyenPham-jm5eq
    @TuyenPham-jm5eq Před 5 lety +3

Why Is The Catholic Church Holy?
First of all, no church is holy unless its source is the source of all holiness. Think of an organization, any organization, if its founder was a murderer, adulterer, robber, would anyone join it? I hope not for those who joined such organization associated themselves with its founder. On the other hand, a good organization, founded by good people, and for good purposes can always have bad members, and bad members don’t make a good organization bad unless the organization condoned its members’ bad behaviors or actions.
The Catholic Church has its source in Jesus Christ, the source of all holiness; flows out from this source of all holiness can only be holiness. For this reason, the Catholic Church is holy, and not only the Catholic Church is holy it is also always holy for it is the body of Christ, and the body of Christ is always holy. Eph 1: 22, 23, (22) And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, (23) which is his body, the fullness of the one him who fills all things in every way. Eph 5:23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the Savior of the body.
So the Catholic Church is holy. What then can be said about the sins committed by Catholics? Let’s think of an innocent child. If, for any reason, this child had to bear horrible looking wounds on his or her body, would these wounds take away the innocence of this child? Definitely not! In much the same way, the sins committed by Catholics are the wounds Christ still bore on his holy body, the Church. These wounds, no matter how horrible they are; they can not take away the holiness of Christ body, the Catholic Church. St.
Paul made this clear, Col 1:24, "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church.” In addition, Christ founded his Church for no other reason than to continue his redemptive and sanctifying work in the world, to make disciples of all nations, and to lead all to holiness. So if the Church itself is not holy, it can not lead its members to holiness. This, however, does not mean members of the church are holy. In fact, they are sinners, but through the Church, Christ pours out his graces to cleanse, to sanctify, and to make holy sinful members so that Jesus “might present the Church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” Eph 25:27.
As a recap, the Catholic Church is holy because it has its source in Christ, the source of all holiness, and because it is the body of Christ. Though Catholics are sinners, through his Holy Church and by the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ continues to cleanse, to sanctify, to prepare, and to adorn them as his unblemished Bride for his return.

It was Ignatius of Antioch who said that "wherever the Bishop is, let the people be, even as wheresoever Christ is, there is the Catholic Church". So this already demonstrates, at a very early stage, the authority of the Bishops. Furthermore, what is spurious and unfounded in Scripture is Sproul's notion of the "invisible church". This is a completely and utterly false. Finally, Irenaeus was not concerned primarily about the authority of Scripture. Indeed he even states that the Gnostics take Scripture and turn it into a picture of a dog. He was advocating the preservation of the Apostolic faith found in the Tradition of the Church.

In Acts we read where the apostles appointed another person to take his place. Jesus is the Head. The church is the body. So, ultimately it is Jesus making the appointment. The head and the body are one.
This is because there was an office to fill. The apostles occupied offices started by Jesus and perpetuated through time. This actually happened in history. Matthias was the first instance.

This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error."
To be clear about the 666 beast, the Bible is very specific, which is why a certain 'Universal Church' has tried to corrupt the & proscribed the Bible from the time of Constantine. By its pompous, corrupt authority, it has changed the Laws of God (Ten Commandments) by removing the 2nd, changing the Lord's Day, Sabbath Day from Saturday to Sunday for pagan 'sun'-worshippers & split the 10th in two to make up for the one removed. See Exodus 20 & compare to a Catechism.
It is curious how Roman numerals for the Latin names of this universal/ occult church add up to 666.
For example, in the Bible's prophetic code Roman numerals are an important key. Other ancient cultures that had alpa-numeric counting systems include Hebrew & Greek.
Looking at Roman numerals to solve this ancient riddle is however most revealing, for exaple, the Roman Catholic Church claims to be the NUMBER ONE CLERGY.
In Latin, NUMBER ONE CLERGY translates literally as "DUX CLERI". Apply Roman numerals to this term & then 'count'/ add.
"Let he who has understanding" realize that a "beast" in Bible prophecy is always a king or a kingdom. See Daniel 7:17 for confirmation.
(Wonder later, how this also works in Hebrew & Greek, when using their terms for the same king & kingdom.)
"Here is wisdom, let he who has understanding count the number of the beast, for it is (also) the number of a man and his number is 666."
So, "let he who has understanding COUNT the number of the beast". Rev 13:18
So, a critical identifier of the 666 beast is "his number". The only place in the Bible where 666 is mentioned in prophecy is Revelation 13:18.
The Greek word "anti" also means "instead of".
Start counting in Latin numerals, but this also works in Hebrew & Greek. You do the research.
    Recall: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 5, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. U is a modern Latin letter derived from V. V & U both represent 5.
Number One Clergy = DUX CLERI.
So "count the number of the beast", one of its many identifiers using its own counting system.
    D= 500, U = 5, X =10 & C = 100, L = 50, E = nil, R = nil & I = 1.
DUX CLERI has a 'number count' of:
    500+5+10 + 100+50+0+0+1 = 666.
Now, what’s the job description of the Pope?
Would Vicar of the family of God do? In Latin that's VICARIUS FILII DEI
    5+1+100+0+0+1+5+0 + 0+1+50+1+1 + 500+0+1 = 666.
So what's Italian for King of Roman Priests?
    Try, REX LATINVS SACERDOS
    0+0+10 + 50+0+0+1+0+5+0 + 0+0+100+0+0+500+0+0 = 666.
It also 'counts' in Greek & Hebrew, in all a total of 14 descriptions of the Vatican & the Pope revealed it & he as the 666 beast.
    A) “Sunday is our MARK of authority… The church is above the Bible and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.” (Catholic Record Sept 1, 1923).

    C) “Of course the Catholic church claims the change (to Sunday) was her act… and the MARK of ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters.” Letter Oct 28, 1895. C.Thomas, Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons.
    D) “The Pope… can dispense above the law; and of wrong make right by correcting and changing laws.” (Pope Nicholas, Dist. 96, quoted in “Facts for the Times” pp55, 56. 1893)

That is when your sins are revealed by the spirit and you have a true repentance and turn away from your sins. Not just go to confession every now and then but still sin every day. There has to be a change of heart and mind to be one with Christ. The catholic church don't even have bible study ever! How will you know truth? The priests are not sovereign, only Christ Jesus. They have led you astray, all like sheep have gone their own way. They are wolves in sheeps clothing. The outward appearance is fake for their hearts are wicked. With no sound evidence or reason to believe it to be true other than we declared it to be true so you have to believe it. so before you run a man down perhaps you should examine what you believe and is it a different gospel to the one the apostles taught. Actually, the Protestant Church fits the description of a man-made church, whereas the Catholic Church as we know it, was founded by Jesus Christ. And just because the word "catholic" isn't found in Scripture certainly doesn't preclude the early Christian Church from being identified by another name shortly after the Apostolic era, which indeed happened. It is in the writings of Ignatius of Antioch that we first see the word "catholic" in reference to the church of Jesus Christ, and that occurred in about 107 AD. Other early church fathers of the first few centuries also speak of the Catholic Church, as well as the Muratorian Canon of the 2nd century, which speaks of the inspired books that were accepted by the Catholic Church at the time. If you are of the mind that the Catholic Church did not come into existence until the 4th century or later, you are badly mistaken. You would do well to study the ECF's writings with a fair mind and see that what I am saying is entirely true.

The RCC apostated from the truth of the word of God in their doctrine long ago, which is why the Protestant reformation happened in the first place. The RCC has since not changed its teachings about Mary as a mediator to God (as well as praying to other saints), it's "purgatory" doctrine, the "mass", and perhaps most importantly, their doctrine of justification before God by works, which nullifies the grace of God in the Gospel and preventing people from understanding how to be saved.

Unless you are born again; you can’t believe. The belief it takes to be born again is not some obstacle you have to work through; it is a willingness of your soul to submit. The churches and religions are not making this clear; people are so confused, needlessly. There is some important stones to be gleaned from systematic theology and dispensational teachings, but the true tests of all matters , teachings, and religions and hearts, and souls, is this; “Do you know thy God, and does He know you in a Right Relationship”. If so, all questions may not be answered currently for you, but an understanding has been passed onto you that the answers WILL be given! He continues, "It is not lawful to baptize or give communion without the consent of the bishop. On the other hand, whatever has his approval is pleasing to God. Thus whatever is done is safe and valid". Do you know who said that RC? St Ignatius of Antioch said that in the early second century. The answer: not found explicitly .
Though like an acorn the Church developed and grew by the grace of God as promised explicitly in the Bible as a ONE HOLY catholic and Apostolic Church, and the only Church in town at the beginning was that universal Church (catholic) that sprouted into a mighty Oak that stands today as the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

If I understand your denomination correctly, Jesus said, “this is my body” but your denomination says it is not. Jesus said His body is “true food” (John 6) but your denomination says it is not true food. The Bible says five different times to eat of Jesus’ body and drink of His blood so the issue is not really even open for debate.

@Believer *You are wrong once again. Bible does not teach Apostolic Succession - APostles to new Apostles. Bible teaches Leadership Succession - Apostles to elders/leaders. Titus 1:5 says so. After the times of the Apostles, all churches went independent. They had their own leaders, own councils, own canons, ... They did not go back to Jerusalem for councils anymore. But as a whole they were still the Church (consisting of all churches + all believers).*

No he is not. Purgatory does not exist, or it would be in the Bible. Also, nowhere in the Bible does it tell us to pray to Mary or that she is an intercessor. The Bible is not most of God’s truth, it is ALL of God’s truth. Why do people constantly feel the need to add things to the Bible that not in there. I pray I will never feel that need, and that I will always hold true to sacred truths of God’s word.

Every convert in the book of Acts was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ only . Anything else is man made doctrine . There’s absolutely no place in the Bible where anyone was baptized in the titles of Father , Son , and Holy Ghost . Peter and the apostles understood what Jesus meant when he said “ Baptizing them in the NAME ( singular ) of the Father , and of the Son , and of the Holy Ghost “ was Jesus name .
