- microSHIFT Advent X is a modern, 10 speed 11-48t wide-range drivetrain for under $169. That's derailleur, cassette, and shifter for $160. Not to mention, it weighs less than Shimano XT 12 speed. In this episode we put it to the test to see how it does.

A few more comments:
- Since filming this review, I've put over 400 miles on advent X, and it's been absolutely FLAWLESS
- I like this drivetrain so much I went out and bought two more setups. I now have Advent X on 3 of my bikes
- My all-time favorite drivetrain is Sram XX1 11 and 12 speed, but I can buy 4 sets of these for the cost of xx1. It's a no-brainer.
- This uses an HG driver
- 11 to 48t is plenty for me
- The ONLY thing I would change about this drivetrain is I'd love to see some sort of bar clamp that is removable so this could be compatible with matchmaker or ispec.
- The feel, clutch tension, and quality of this feels miles ahead of the Box 3 I reviewed earlier
- price does not include chain, crank, bb, or chainring.
hardtail party where are you finding the derailleur? I’ve had the shifter and cassette for several months but can’t get my hands on the derailleur. One of the last parts I’m waiting on to build up an mmmbop
@@roryjohnson3567 I bought it from worldwide cyclery using the link above. I had them email me when it became available.
Cool, thanks. I’ve done that as well. I ordered one from them 20 minutes after getting the email that they were back in stock but ended up with a refund as they had already sold out. I guess you were one of the people that beat me to the punch lol. Thanks for all the awesome videos
@@roryjohnson3567 Get some photos over to /r/hardtailgang when you're done!
I take this works with any crank & doesn't have some weird chainline spacing like some Shimano products do(looking at you GRX).
Best mtb channel on you tube! You would be the perfect guy to do a virtual bang for your buck build. Keep up the great work!
I've got some fun videos coming that you're really going to like.
Great to see this review. Advent X made a BIG splash in the "gravel" bike world as Microshift makes a drop bar set up for this drive train.
Yeah, but can you use it with hydraulic brakes or do I have also to replace them?
I have this on my Surly Ghost Grappler and it's great. I didn't like the drops and it was so easy to change to a trigger shifter and alt bars. Trigger shifter is lovely and cheap
I just installed mine two days back and took a quick test around the block yesterday. Can't wait to hit the trails when they refreeze later this week. Your review was awesome. My experience so far was exactly what you described.
I'm building up an old Gunnar Rockhound for touring and this is a perfect update. Almost went with the Advent 9 spd but I'm glad I opted for the 48 cog here in CO. Great seeing this review. Your channel is super informative.
Now if I can only find a store with the groupset in stock.

I totally agree! I stopped upgrading at 10sp & I feel no need at all for tighter gear steps.
great review! I just ordered this drive train and after your review i'm super excited about it!
I've had the Microshift Advent X for several months now and it's been great on my steel 650b
Great review! I was thinking about this for a project I am building. You have definitely helped me make my decision!
Thanks for the review! I have been wondering specifically about the the shifter feel. Thanks for addressing that. I hate my Box Prime One shifter and am ready to make the plunge on this drivetrain now. Keep up the good work I always look forward to your videos!
So excited to watch this - this will be going on the Honzo in 2021
I’m running the Advent on my Solaris Max for a while It’s running perfectly, actually much better than my new Deore group set on other bike. I love the positive “Clickiness” of the Advent. Cheap and cheerful 😀
Never went to 11sp. Running a Saint shifter, a SLX (11sp) derailleur, SunRace cassette and KMC chain. Nice mix’n’match!
Upgraded my kid's 27.5" and 29" hardtails to 1x10 from 3x8 & 3x9 with Advent X, been a month and super happy!
Was able to bolt a Wolftooth narrow-wide chainring and a bash guard on one of the 3x cranksets, the other was riveted so crankset and bottom bracket had to be replaced. Of course both bikes needed new chains as well.
The drivtrains work great, huge improvement over the lower-end stock Shimano stuff that came with the bikes.
11-48T in the back, 34T up front on the 27.5" and 32T up front on the 29er. Gear ratios are very similar between the bikes, kids seem to be able to make them go? :)
Its unbelievable, that they can build shifters that are so precise, for that kind of money. Like you
said $169. for everything. Now if they last that would be really cool. Thanks for the great review.
Have fun and be safe.
Yes! Great to hear the review on this! My youngest is moving up to his older brothers 24in Giant xtc jr with a 3x7, as the oldest is waiting for his new Talon to arrive for next year. Been debating about upgrading that drive train on that xtc jr to this AdventX 10spd to simplify things. Reached out to Microshift and they said that clearance wise the 10spd derailleur will clear with 24in tires. My only reservation right now is how well at 7yrs old he will handle trigger shifting with his thumbs vs the 3x7s revoshift twist grips....
Thanks again for the great reviews. This is why I love this channel. Cheers, Colin.
I recently changed my boys, age 6 and 9 from Shimano rev grip shift to trigger and they both love it. 6yo on a 1x7 and 9yo on 3x6. I have heard no complaints since, they just shift as needed on their own.
I might try this on my fat bike when I finish wearing out the budget SX Eagle drivetrain it came with. 10 speed with that range would be awesome
Thanks Steve! I’ve been waiting for this review. I already have the cassette and shifter. I’m waiting on the derailleur to be back in stock. This will be going on my Paradox build this winter. My only concerns were how the jumps between gears were and shifting under load. You answered all my questions in the vid!
There are a few shops that have them out there if you're an expert internet sleuth. I just bought two today. :)
The jumps never bothered me, it felt very smooth to me. Granted, I like SS bikes, and I'd probably be ok on a 7 speed. Eagle has smoother, smaller gaps, but I never felt like these gaps were bad at all.
I have an XT 12-speed and Advent X. While I wouldn't go as far as saying I prefer the Advent X more, it's REALLY close. Absolutely amazing drivetrain.
Excellent review. Thank you!
So refreshing seeing a test on budget hardware. I also like that you mix n match equipment to test, so much more real world than the usual. Another great video 👌
Thanks for the kind words. Recently I mixed and match an advent x shifter with an 11 speed NX derailleur... It didn't work very well. :)
@@hardtailparty was it way off or minimal failure?
@@xrated_ way off
@@hardtailparty can you see any wear on the hanger when Microshift derailleur is mounted? I had bad experience with SRAM derailleurs when the hanger lip is not that long.
@@xrated_ I've never seen wear on a hanger before, from any derailleur. What was causing the wear? Was it loose?
Thanks! Based on this, I replaced my old XT drivetrain with an Advent (9s) and could not be happier. Next build will absolutely be Advent X.
I have the Advent! With about 200 miles on it and it is fantastic!
This is very encouraging.
I've been using the Advent X on my NS hardtail for six months and it works great! You get used to the gear ratio really quickly.
Big fan of your channel. You are blessed to ride Sedona. Looks incredible!
Thank you so much We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to live here.
I upgraded a Marlin 7 with this drivetrain it was awesome!
10spd never left. Been running xo shifter with gx or x9 rear mech and wide range cassette. Never needed more.
Thanks for the review Steve. I love seeing new companies getting into components like this. More competition and more choices works in the consumer's favor!
100% agree. The shifter, cassette, and derailleur are half the cost of a GX cassette
@@hardtailparty and on a ground up build, you either save money on the build or you can use the saved money and put it into suspension, wheels, or brakes. For me, drivetrain is on the bottom of priority for a bike build. Frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, drive train.
No complaints here about a 10s hardtail. I did try and look up the Advent X, but seems to be sold out, like every other bike part in 2020.
nice review i look forward to the next one regards, the longevity vs real world riding.
I've got 400 miles on it so far. It shifts identical to the first day.
Nice something to think about when I begin to modify my bike.
That trail looks amazing
It is amazing. I love it.
11-48t, I would have to run a 28 tooth front ring... but that would be ok. I rarely need very high gears anyway. I used a Microshift non-clutch model 9 speed rear derailleur, it worked great until crash damage wrecked it. I still use Microshift 9 speed twist type shifters on some bikes. They work very well. MicroShift is an overlooked manufacturer that produces some good parts at good prices.
I have advent 9 speed works fantastic!! Also review the new Marin el Roy vs Kona honzo the price is pretty close !!
I’d take this over SX or even NX Eagle all day long. I have the normal advent on a hard tail and it’s honestly perfect.
Fantastic review! So much I had to go digging for the set. Found and snagged it on Cambria. Which crankset/chain ring and chain are you running?
Yeah between cambria and universal cycles, I was able to snag a set too
Do you have a long term review of this drivetrain? I’ve been running it for 2 years and love it.
Currently building up a Mmmbop with the Advent X, I'm hoping it performs as well as you say as it's probably saved me £200 over going Sram or Shimano. Now, if only I could find the shifter in stock.. anywhere!
I love my Advant X but think for my new build I'll be trying e13 hilux
Managed to get two cassettes- they're cheap, got enough range, and are really light!
If I can fit this on my Surly Pugs I would consider this to replace the old sloppy 2x9 from 2014 on that bike. Maybe go 32t on the front ring.
If you have an HG driver, you can fit it.
How would you compare the Kona Honzo Steel (2012-13) to the Kona Explosif (2014-17)?
Iam a sucker for Kona Bikes ever since i got back into cycling as a mote of commuting to work and your videos put the idea of a steel hardtail in my head for just having fun.
Living in Germany getting hands on Kona Bikes is a bit of a hassle but from time to time there are some good deals on used bikes here.
I just dont know of i should take up a Honzo or a Explosif for flowy trails i wanna ride.
Cheers
I have one of my hardtails set up with a 1x10 with a sunrace 11/46 and I prefer it to my 1x12 11/50 full sus. With the 12 speed it always feels like there is either too much or not enough torque to climb up roots, logs etc. When I'm climbing it always seems to feel like I'm in the situation where I shift I want it just a tad easier and I'll make it but if I get into the first 2 gears the torque is gone and feels like the chain is off and momentum is lost.
You should do a review one of the GarbarUK cassettes
this is kinda unrelated to this particular video, but is there a review for the nukeproof scout, cus im thinking of getting one
I just ordered Advent 9spd for my backup bike after not really liking the Box2 11spd drivetrain that had the same range. Got the trail pro shifter with Ball bearings so hoping it feels better.
What were your complaints about the Box? I just ordered that drivetrain for $160, haha.
@@RSJ115 lots of shifter flex, inaccurate, too much pressure required to shift into lower gears even with the clutch in it’s lightest setting.
I did a review of the box 3 on my rurok kanlaon video.
I've got the Advent 9 with the old style shifter. I went with the sealed bearing shifter and zero complaints on shifting pressure thru out the whole cassette. It is pretty consistant from 1 to 9. I broke my thumb a couple years back and it didn't heal right so thumb shifter tension is something I look out for otherwise it hurts. No issues here.
Please have a review of the Microshift XCD 11
Awesome video! Hows the climb with the Advent X? Right now I'm rocking a GT aggressor pro 3x8, will I be good with this Advent X? Or will I struggle during the climbs? Thxs!
Revisiting an older video. My new hardtail came with Sram NX Eagle. While I'm in no rush to change it out I do miss the Advent X. The Sram is slower and a little crunchy where the Advent X shifts faster and harder.
Great review as always. Would a shimano xt 10 speed shifter work with the advent x rear mech and cassette?
No, at least that's what microshift says.
Great video, the advent feels great for shifting quality! However, I've had 4 shifter cables snap at where it comes out of the derailleur, I think the angle is quite sharp with a sharp corner there. And I had chain retention issues at the top idler wheel on the derailleur it likes to come off there on mine. This is roughly over the period of use of 1000km, with lots of bike park. I think I've solved the cable snapping by oiling and cleaning the cable housing religiously (more than ever had to with sram). The chain popping off I haven't though, really only happens on long chunky bike park runs here in BC.
Hace you adjusted the b tension?
@@hardtailparty For sure, I've even tried way too small gap and way to large just to see if it made a difference. Hanger is straight, derailleur isn't bent. Chain length is about as tight it could comfortably get with chain growth. Mind you this happens on sustained chunky stuff. So I'm waiting patiently to see the long term review or comments you have haha! It's great dt but I've had some issues. Again great video!
@@spicyberms7282 very I rereading. Which bike is it on? I wonder if certain suspension designs leaf to more chain growth and make it behave differently. I don't ride park on my hardtails, but I haven't run into any issues yet. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Keep me posted if you figure it out.
@@hardtailparty I'm on a 2019 Commencal Meta AM 29, single pivot linkage, and it has a good amount of pedal kickback...maybe be part of it? Ya if I figure it out I'll let you know
Great review! I was thinking “ wow, is this trail bumpy and rocky” when you made a comment ‘let’s see how it does in the bumpy parts”. And you ride a hard tail in that stuff! Way to go!
A dumb question; I have a super light 2010 Kona Kula Supreme that needs a new group set. It weighs just over 23#, and that’s with its 3x9! It has the standard QR for-that-period spacing on both hubs. I want to make this my light XC trail/urban all-around gravel bike. I’m not a young guy anymore, and I want one bike, the crescent wrench tool of bikes fit me.
My question: will (or should) this 10 speed AdventX system fit on my bike? I was considering getting rid of one of the chainrings and go 2x9, using the Advent, to the extent my bike is set up for 9 speed, but so many folks say great things about the AdventX. As long as it fits. Thoughts? Have you gotten feedback on the 9 speed system?
Thank you much for sharing your video!
I haven't tried adcentx on 135mm spacing yet.
I just see in my bike shop the phantom 29 2021 it just blow my mind this bike is awesome, I check the components there are ok but comes whit a rock shox 35 look at the geo and 66head angle whit 130mm fork,75 seat tube angle,it have long reach and comes whit maxxis minion DHF and dissector 2.4 both tubeless ready rims, how come that I was looking for something like this, also a dropper post for like 1700us for all the package what do you think of this new bike? In numbers looks amazing
If only I can get my hands on one
I rarely ride at high 1/2/3 gears except on flat road, I do need low gears at least 48t. 10 gears with 48t or 50t is the way to go.
Do you know if the cable pull the same between the drop bar shifters and trigger shifters?
Is it worth changing/upgrading from an old 10 speed Shimano Deore to the Microshift Advent X?
Have you put any miles on Prime 9? I want to ditch my GX Eagle, and I’m considering micro shift, box one prime 9, or xt with the new e13 cassette.
Hey I got 2 questions.
1. Can you adjust or "service" the clutch like on Shimano? It seems like you could?
2. Is it only single upshift or can you upshift multiple gears? If yes how many? Thanks a lot!
Seeing how some people can fly on single speeds has given me some perspective. Especially considering how the pulley cage on my Eagle derailleur is a stick magnet and has been bent a few times. Sometimes less is better.
what hubs r u running sounds like plenty of engagement
Hi Steve, just wondering if there will be a review for the nukeproof wheel set
Yes. Coming soon.
I have the advent 9 speed on my hardtail since January and it’s been pretty solid. Question, have you tested the newer Onyx Vesper hub?
I have a vesper on my ZIPP wheels. Its got a little bit of play in it. It feels like a loose hub. I had to warranty the spindle, but now it's working well. It'd my favorite hub, aside from that side to side play.
Do you think the 10 speed shimano deore shifter, derailleur work with the advent X 10 speed cassette?
Can you do a long term review?
These one chainring set ups are new to me. can anyone tell me how many teeth are on the single crankset chainring in this setup ? thanks ! Im a road biker - what crank arm length ? are we still using 170 172.5 175 ?
On my order list but where can you even find it in stock?
2days ago i watched this review and today i got em advent X fixed on my big Al. like what you said... it's a game changer. feels so much better than my Sram XO drive 🚂🚋🚃🚋🚃🚋🚃. many thanks Steve
Love this drivetrain. Can I use a Shimano SLX crankset with this?
Yes
Love this drivetrain. Got some of the parts on my bike. Any opinion on the weight?
It's lighter than 12 speed XT. Who knew... fewer cogs, more spacing between cogs, eaiser adjustability, thicker chain, cheaper price, AND lighter weight? Sounds good to me. Now, it doesn't feel quite as refined as an x01 shifter, but it's pretty amazing when you consider the shifter is $27.
I have a shimano SLX 11 speed 11-46 drivetrain. My cassette needs to be replaced and i dont have many options at this point. Cost wise id only be spending a little more to swap out the whole drivetrain with Advent X. I also wouldnt mind the bigger 48T granny gear instead of the 46t. I think im going to get this.
or try the sunrace 11-50 11 speed cassette with the aluminum 42 and 50 gears. they are only about $90 and work fantastic, I have one on a RSD and love it.
Just got this on my fuse after smashing my Deore 'railer on a rock a couple weeks back. Everything Steve said is spot on. I had to drive across Phoenix to a shop that one in stock.
What shop in Phoenix stocks this?
@@Digital_Gangster Global Bikes is where I got mine, they have several locations.
I'd wager the gaps are probably better for punchy trails. I'm considering upgrading my OEM Sram SX to this because not only is SX fairly clunky and heavy but I'm often double shifting. I rarely shift only a single gear, so the larger gaps of the 10 speed may be an advantage for my style of riding. Though I also like riding single speed sooooo maybe thats just me.
I agree with you. If riding were primarily flat, perhaps closer gaps would be better, but I'd honestly be fine with a wide range 5 speed.
I just purchased this group set from Universal Cycles located in Portland OR. Unbelievable that this is only $179 including a KMC X10 chain.
I just bought 2 more sets myself. It's crazy how cheap it is compared to everything else out there. And it's still lighter than shimano xt.
Now that you you’ve had the drivetrain for quite a while how is it holding up? I saw a video where someone had really bad wear on the cassette only after 400 km.
How many km/miles do you have on your adventure x now?
How is it performing now?
I second everything Steve says here. Great value drivetrain, been running it for 4 months and zero issue. Easy setup since it isn't such a narrow gap between gears, positive shifts, solid feeling components. You can get noisy shifts under load, but then shifting under high load is bad technique anyway... SRAM just lets you get away with it. Really pleased that there is an inexpensive, high quality and lightweight setup for custom builds without getting into yet another new standard.
100% agree. Shifting under load is bad technique and should be avoided on any drivetrain. It's not hard to learn to shift well and ease up for a little bit when shifting.
I didn't know 10spd ever left LoL. I personally don't see a need for 11 or 12 speed. All I'm waiting for is a 10spd XT wide range cassette from Shimano. 11 - 42 cassette with a 30t or 32t single ring is more than enough for me.
I see the Advent X cassette and derailleur come in steel versions. Cheaper and more durable, I suppose. Any reason not to go for the steel options apart from the weight penalty?
I've used both and they're both great. The steel ones are a bit heavier, and are a tiny bit quieter under shifting (due to the mass of the cogs). Apart from weight, there's no disadvantage.
Just like to ask, how did the cassette and RD hold up on the long term? Thanks!
Still going strong
How does this compare to the older Shimano and SRAM 10 speed groupset in terms of weight, quality, etc.?
MUCH wider range, and a better clutch. Unsure about weight.
I see you have an Ikon in the back for Sedona. What do you run up front?
Dissector
Any updates on this drivetrain? How has it held up? Did you make a follow up video?
See comments below and my corazon trail bikepacking gear video.
sure it's lighter and cheaper, it's alloy instead of steel on sram/shimano cassettes.
anyway, keep the budget reviews coming, it's great!
Sram/shimano are alloy as well.
Lol, I've lost an XT derailleur to a rock on the exact trail you're riding there... Would have been nice if it was a $60 derailleur instead of a $90 one.
Just because you have an XT derailleur, that doesn't mean you have to replace it with another XT derailleur when it breaks. For example a 12spd XT RD costs ~$115 and a 12spd Deore RD costs ~$70. The RD is one of the best places in the drivetrain to save money and "downgrade" because you won't notice pretty much any difference.
Yup i using adventx on gravel bike no issue. I dont need any hype like GRX shimano 810 groupset and its too way expensive for hype.
How good is the 9 speed?
Would this work if I just buy the cassette with a shimano deore drivetrain?
No
Any 1 year update?
Hi, have you had any experience of how this drive train works in winter slop conditions?
No We don't have winter or slop here in Arizona, sorry.
@@hardtailparty You're missing out! 😜
I'm just getting into mountain biking and I got the 2021 Specialized Fuse comp. The stock drivetrain is a "Shimano Deore M6100, 12spd w/Hyperglide+, 10-51t".
would this microshift drivetrain be an upgrade to the stock shimanos that came with my bike?
no, probably not
depend what you like, i'll stay with the deore personally
Not a huge upgrade, just weight. The deore works well. I'd keep it.
Thank you all for the replies- yeah I'll just wait till my current drivetrain breaks before even considering a new one. I don't know why I have the mindset that all the stock parts that came with my bike should be upgraded ASAP when in reality they are perfectly fine
What do you think of the Microshift XLE 11 speed?
No experience. Advent x is just fine for me, i don't feel like i need another gear.
Would this derailleur work with an XT 10s shifter? And then have the multi-shift ability?
They have two different shifters, a single and multi shift! I have the just Advent 9sps with multi shift and love it!
I don't believe they have a 10 speed multi shift. Mine only shifts up one gear at a time. Microshift claims it's not compatible with shimano or sram shifters or derailleurs. I can confirm that it's not compatible with sram, but I haven't experimented with shimano yet.
Yes it does, I've been using an 11-48 MS cassette with a XT 10sp shifter and Mech with OneUp RadR cage and GoatLink, it might just work with the GoatLink only but if you had a long cage it would work no problem
You gotta check out the Marin El Roy. Looks really slack!
Yes. There are only 2 in existence right now. Once marin gets more in, they plan on sending me one for review. I doubt it's going to fit me, with only two super long sizes, but it'll be interesting to see.
Good to hear! Love Marin’s designs and philosophy
What size is the front chainring?
I run a 32t
@@hardtailparty ok ty
Hi, can you use 11 speed chain on 10 speed drivetrain
A 10 speed chain is recommended. Fortunately, you can find 10 speed chains for $25.
My local bike shop ran out of 10 speed chain. But they said it ok to use 11 speed chain
This vs Deore M4100 with an 11-46? Pretty much the same price.
Both are good. Most people will pick the shomano, but I'd personally rather have the advent x. Shifting feels crisper, faster, and it feels more solid. Not to mention it's significantly lighter.
@@hardtailparty Yeah the M4100 cassette is pretty porky at ~530g.
I’ve got 17 miles on my cassette and it’s so noisy. I know it’s not high end but the noise is worse than $40 cassettes. There’s a ton of rotational play. Wondering if you got/get that on any of the cassettes? My freehub is in good shape, other cogs/cassette fit well.
I'm betting you're missing the spacer on your free hub. Some hubs come with a spacer that sits behind the cassette. Is there any rattle/play when you grab the biggest cog and wiggle it?
@@hardtailparty yup, that would make sense because I just tossed my spacers I had. Got used to XD. I knew I shouldn’t have tossed parts. Thank you for your help.
P.S. nimble 9 is amazing. Been single speed for a while just threw gears on for some backcountry stuff. I hardly ride my transition sentinel anymore.
So if you have 12 speed SLX you can’t use this right
Shimano 12 speed uses microspline hub bodies, so no. You could upgrade to an XT shifter though.
What chain are you using with your advent x?
A cheap $25 sram chain. I don't remember the model number.
@@hardtailparty I assume it’s a 10 speed specific chain though? One more quick question if you don’t mind... Does the lower pulley on yours sit a little farther out, away from the wheel, compared to the upper pulley? Basically not aligned exactly vertically.
@@downtoridemtb d'oh I meant to say a cheap $25 10speed sram chain. Sorry about that.
My pullets are aligned. Is your hanger straight/aligned?
@@hardtailparty thanks for your response. I don’t have an alignment tool so I just checked it with a metal ruler at various angles and it looked fine. Maybe that’s not an accurate enough way to look at it though. Bike will be in the shop next week anyway for something else so I’ll have them check it out properly.
@@hardtailparty well as it turns out, derailleur hanger was fine. I manually bent the derailleur cage to get it more inline. But the biggest problem was that my hub was shot, the hub body had way to much play which was causing strange shifting. New hub on and it was shifting pretty good but a little noisy in a few gears (the smallest 3). Replaced the SRAM 10 speed chain with a KMC 11 speed chain and it is fantastic now! So smooth and so quiet!
