"why don't you stop playing this stupid gamble, the chance of winning a decent amount of money is barely existent"
"yes but do you remember that i won $200 5 years ago?"
"and how much have you spent over the years?"

Yep. It's damn expensive paying for that little rush...that pang of hope. Truly addictive behavior.
I've also had that conversation multiple times w multiple people.
They don't want to hear it. They don't want to comprehend it. They don't allow themselves to understand & absorb it.
I've even said to some, "Put the money you'd spend in a jar until the end of the year: guaranteed win." That doesn't tend to go over well.
"The odds of winning the lottery are so low that they're ILLEGAL to be that low in Vegas."
      *blank look....then denial.
Those little "wins" they or their friends/relatives/whoever get...that's what keeps the deception working.
Another reason our educational system doesn't improve: The government concerned they may lose income.

A few years ago, when the lottery hit a billion dollars, someone at the office came around collecting money for a lottery pool at work. I said, "I'm sorry. My understanding of probability won't let me play." She then insisted that I'd be sorry wjhen everyone else retired and I'd still be here the next day. I just said that I'd take my chances. Once someone finally did win three or four drawings later, not only was everyone at work the next day, but out of the hundreds of dollars they spent, the winnings (they'd put in $12 each when combined [three each time] over four drawings) amounted to less than a quarter a person, so they put it back in the pool. That's almost more impressive than if they had actually won.

calling it an idiot tax, while fair, kinda just cements classism. Economic mobility is a luxury only the ever shrinking middle class enjoys. There's literally no other option for the poor if they want to stop being poor. They can't work hard to pull themselves out of poverty anymore since they get paid essentially peanuts because they're poor and can't fight back on it. And that even assumes they can get a job. So many employers look at the poor and see lazy people and don't hire them since the poor are lazy, right?

    • @SFoX-On-Air
      @SFoX-On-Air Před 10 měsíci +1

@@chaincat33 Are you talking about Germany? Because here, the minimum wage has been €12 ($13.05) since 2015. This means that no matter what someone does, they cannot earn less than €12 per hour. Starting from 2024, the minimum wage will be raised to €12.41 ($13.49) here. Eventually, according to the current Minister of Labor, Hubertus Heil, it is intended to reach €14 ($15.22).
Of course, I understand that you're probably not talking about Germany. Most likely, you're referring to the USA. I just wanted to point out that an individual's world is never the whole world. What you experience is the direct result of your country's politics. And if we are indeed talking about the USA, I can say that it's their desired approach. It's the concept of unconditional capitalism being implemented in a 'survival of the fittest' manner.
However, in other countries around the world, they don't always try to blackmail their population into submission by threatening them with starvation. There are plenty of places where people who haven't reached the middle class can afford to buy lottery tickets. And those who play the lottery are simply to stupid for mathematics. Neither the social nor the economic culture of their own country can change that.
If a lottery ticket costs $1, it's more sensible to lay that dollar on the ground and stick another one next to it next week. In the end, you will have a cardboard house made entirely of dollar bills that you can live in. And that will still be faster than winning $10,000 in the lottery.

Another great one :) The only significant area you left out was following the money. Where the Sam Hill does all of that money go? Who and how many people typically run a State Lottery? What is their overheard/payroll? How many Lottery employees make over $100k per year? How much is their pension we're all paying for? These are the kinds of simple, probing questions no news organization has ever asked or reported on. If we knew The Truth, we'd all likely be marching on our state capitol tomorrow to change this shadowy, nearly mafia-like underworld of State Lotteries.

The main reason for that would be that the high they get from buying stuff would diminish over time. Eventually, they'd get almost no high off buying anything, or only once or twice a year. The more you do something the less exciting and rewarding it is. Most lottery winners would probably get more enjoyment after a few years of seeing people with nothing get something for once in their life (from them), in the form of a low interest loan say.

The differences between getting rich by hard work and getting instantly rich from winning the lottery is that as a hard working individual your network is probably of comparable wealth as you. Where a lottery winner will suddenly find himself being the slumdog millionaire. Also; especially in the united states; people will instantly know you are millionaire and you didn't work hard for it. So people feel more entitled to ask you for something over someone who slowly became rich over time.
