  • Today I built a jig for installation of a European-style rock n roll (RIB) seat/bed in my DIY Mercedes Sprinter camper van. There seems to be a lot of interest in getting these seats in the US, which, as it turns out is complicated. I explain my reasons for choosing this seat and this particular layout for my van on my website here: ourkaravan.com (see the "Choosing a Layout" in the Build Section of the website).
    These seats are now available in the US and Canada from a reputable source! (Please tell them OurKaravan sent you!)

    It's so good to see someone actually talk about the safety aspects! I'm sure other people think about it, but it's really easy to get the idea that 99% of DIY builds have crash planning that goes: "I guess we all die". They don't bolt stuff down, they don't think about where it goes when the van stops suddenly let alone when it rolls over. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your build.

    That is an awesome seat, I can only imagine what you have into it. I am building a sprinter for my daughter and son in law, I also need to accommodate legal seating for my 9 month old grandson. That is great the way it will move that far and turning into a bed is even better. great videos. I like the 80/20 you used for the cabinets.

    Great explanation and very cool to see it in action. I ordered one of these (but a little wider) for my own Sprinter conversion. It's still in en route. You are correct that it was very expensive and very hard to get, but nothing available in the US comes close in terms of safety. Question: when it's folded down into a bed, can you sit or stand on the ends? It seems like an awful lot of torque on those unsupported "wings." I was hoping you were going to try in this video. Are those hinges pretty beefy?

  • @seccat

    I was wondering why you just didn't get the seats system off a VW California.... UNTIL I saw those seats unfold. Sweet.
    I agree with everyone else, that this best conversion series. You should consider forming a company to build this design at scale.

    Hi! I have a newborn and my husband and I are converting a van, and are seriously looking at this RIB Scopema seat. We're really pushed for space since we need room for gear in the back of our van. We're wondering if it looks like the RIB seats' third panel is removable? We're considering for a kids bed just having a 2-section bed and saving the extra room of the last panel folded in back. Thanks! It's really valuable to have your resources as one of the few out there who's converting a van with kids!

    Holy merde!!! This seat is perfect for camper van conversions! I got confused though: You got the se3at from Scopema but the rails from a different maker? Also, couldn't you have used the existing anchor points from MB (where they would attach their seats) and fix the new rails in there?

    I'm really enjoying your work, thanks. I like the seat. I'm thinking of building a drop down bed instead, as I don't want to deal with attaching and detaching child seats. Is your daughter big enough to use a booster or are you still in the child seat phase? If so, what are your plan's re: child seat? Thanks!

    @mattwilliams3104 Před 6 lety

    WOW that seat seems to be the best thing that has happened to the van conversion community! I am currently planning my build and want extra legal seating for friends/family. This seems to solve all the problems but YIKES I don't know if I want to jump through all of those hoops to get it to the U.S. I am very, very surprised no U.S based company manufactures these, given the growth of the van-life movement. I've been able to find prices for this seat, but I am wondering exactly how much of a pain was it to get it to the U.S, and how much extra did you have to pay to do so?

    Love your build. I am a bit confused, I understand Uber bus does the interface for the French made seat for the track. Did the rails also come from Uber bus and if so were they comfortable in selling to you directly? From their web site they seem to want to use installation centers. Your bed design and track is the heart of your rig. Just please explain on the logistics of getting this setup to the US. It would be a great video. Did you install the Volkswagen track yourself? I think for many of us aspiring builders it’s not the building but the parts involved. Thank you again. Also, just went to your website. No doubt you invested much time in this.

    • @ourkaravan
      @ourkaravan  Před 4 lety

      Hi, basically what Uberbus does is pair the VW rails and the wheel system with the scopema seat. I bought the whole system from them. I did the install myself. It was 3.5 years ago since my transaction with them so you may want to check and see how they handle out of country sales today. It was a hassle for me because they didn’t want to sell it overseas and I had to do all of the leg work, but things may have changed. I do have another video on the seat install, by the way. Hope that helps.

    • @ourkaravan
      @ourkaravan  Před 3 lety

      It was all absurd, to be honest. The seat itself is around $3.5k, but mine was $4.4k since it had a special adaption done to slide in the VW rail system (rails included of course). Shipping was $1.1k. I'd do it again though...this layout is great and without this seat I couldn't do what I've been able to do in a 144 van. Coincidentally the cost of the larger van is about the same cost as the seat. Justification? -ken

      Way too much, about $2k for the seat. As the demand for this type of arrangement goes up, the likelihood that we get access to an affordable substitute goes up. • @Subgunman
    @Subgunman Před 6 lety

    Is this seat equipped with the European ISO child seat mounting points? Transportation, customs ect always amount to more than half of the cost of anything coming into the USA or coming into the EU. What gets me is that if no one makes such a seat in the USA, why is there customs fees on it. Customs fees are there to protect a business that makes an identical product. If no such product is made then there should not be any fees. I don't believe the company in the UK had to pay any customs being in the EU and that the unit was for export after modifications. I've been looking at a DIY build but I have been informed that here in Greece it is illegal. That's odd, every other major country in the EU has no trouble with DIY builds, lots of goodies come out of the UK for custom build work. Don't forget to add fire and CO alarms in the van. In the UK they even offer a narcotics gas alarm. Yup seems that some criminal elements have turned to gassing campers with ether or nitrous oxide and then robbing the sleeping souls.

    • @Subgunman
      @Subgunman Před 6 lety

      +Kenetube, they usually prey on those who leave side windows open and have been up real late. The major problem is that these narcotic gasses can prove fatal in high dosages, people here in the EU have been lucky so far as to there have been no fatalities or the media has covered them up. So far I have located these alarms only in the UK but not being able to read French or German I usually avoid catalogs from these countries and the bad thing is one living in continental Europe will pay an average of 20-25% more considering the value of the Euro against the British Pound. Another reason why the seats and rails cost a lot, exchange rate between the euro and dollar.
