- A decision to build the door for my new workshop out of reclaimed wood leads me on a Search for Perfect Pallets. After a few false starts I was able to find enough respectable hardwood to build a 3'-0 X 6'-8" solid wood door (the Door Build will be in a separate future video) Join me on the search where I learn all pallets aren't created equal and dial in to an ideal source. You'll see WMD (Weapons of Mass Demolition) used to break pallets apart with remarkable speed... thanks in part to the FFWD feature of video editing software... but ease-of-dismantling is a key attribute of what I see as A Perfect Pallet.

I have no respect for the way you seemingly trespassed on these random businesses to steal, yes , steal, and then to actually bust them up on the spot and leave your reject pieces of lumber that someone will have to physically pick and throw away, thats real nice of you. I work at a shop that goes through alot of pallets, and yes many have some beautiful hardwoods, but the people that see them stacked next to our building have the courtesy to come into the office and politley ask if they could have some, and they also have enough respect to take the whole pallet and dismantle them at their own home. If I ever encounter someone like you banging your THOR outside my building, I would call the police for trespaaing and vandalizing. Thats all I have to say, Happy pallet hunting. sir.
Looks like you really did not bother to pay attention. Watch again, for the pallets he took he took all of the wood from those pallets. As well you did not listen when he stated on the one pallet it was not worth finding out who it belonged to. Then at the next location he commented that they asked him to leave one of the long pallets (which he did) He also comments on leaving the area cleaner then when he found it. (which he does) At the second location he takes all the wood from the two pallets and he even takes a moment to straighten up the boards he is not interested in.
Now why don't you pull your head out of your arse and pay attention while you watch the video again.

Although I have watched all of your videos including what you did with the pallet wood, it was this video that reminded me of when I was like 12 years old (1975). My friend and I were dumpster diving and we came across some really nice wood from a pallet which we made a stack of just outside the dumpster. So, dive in, get wood, stack wood, dive back in. While we were in the dumpster a guy drove up and picked up our stack and left. We were too scared to say anything because we knew we were not supposed to be in that dumpster. I can still see that wood in my mind very clearly. I think it was mahogany. Anyway, this video has inspired me to go pallet hunting! Thanks for all of your videos Matt. You are a treasure on YT.
Thanks for the anecdote Rick... memories from the '70's are the best, right? Try places like Pier One, etc that tend to import stuff... pallets from Indonesia, etc can be remarkable!

Back in the late '50s, my dad worked for a British company who logged old growth Luan ("Philippine Mahogany") in British North Borneo. He was there on a long business trip and purchased several souvenirs to ship back. The souvenirs arrived in large wooden crates, made from that same Luan. My grandfather took one look at those crates, and the family ended up with some beautiful grandpa-built cabinets! Not too sure they do that anymore!
I agree with Rolf, cutting the nail below the bend is brilliant and going in my mental tool box.

Very informative. I built a potting stand out of a pair of 24” x 40” pallets from an HVAC wholesaler I cut in halves. Added some scalp wood for the legs and discarded drawers to it.
I'm the world's biggest pallet recycling fan,and about 45 years ago I was working on the construction of of a power station as a rigger,and so easy of the equipment was shipped in huge crates,some were 25foot by 15 foot by 12 foot, I got permission to take what I wanted and got enough timber to build a 25 ft x 12 ft x 10 ft work shop because my hobby making things with recycled pallets,so you're doing the right thing,better to make something with them than burning the wood,your video was well worth watching and gets my 5 ☆ rating

Thank you for this video. It brought back fond memories of my first wood shop class 35 years ago as a ninth grade student...our shop teacher collected pallets over the summer and when school started we took them apart, learned the different types of wood they were made from, and the importance and value of recycling. We then used the lumber for various wood working projects throughout the year. BTW, This same teacher framed houses and decks in the summer months when school was closed.
I used to get pallets from the Matco tool dealer that services my area. They were used one time each for transporting the toolboxes he sold. All hardwood, right off the mill. The runners were 4x4s and could be cherry, white oak, red oak, poplar, ash, and black Walnut. Lengths ran 6' to 8'. The flat stock used for the spanners, again, varying hardwood species, and all 1 1/8" thick. It blew me away every time I went to pick them up. I always left thinking "JACKPOT!"
Nice to see your keeping busy, probably too busy, I'm sure this new shop with be the ultimate shop. I also have a narrow garage but only one car deep so things are cramped and looking forward for some more tips and tricks to see if I can use some of them, thanks Matt and good luck.

I've found the best wood from pallets built to transport granite slabs, and the businesses usually let you go through the pile before they go to the landfill.

Love the comment about the box stores. You can't beat the quality and service of a real lumber yard. In many cases, the cost of materials is actually less than the box stores.
I picked up some palettes and got as far as sawing them apart into boards. However, I was at a local supplier of wood recently and they had a long cart full of off cuts that they said are free for the taking. This place is not a lumber yard. They supply everything including exotic lumber to carpenters in NYC, Westchester, and CT. They have amazing stuff. Teak, ebony, cherry, curly maple, rosewood, you name it. Before they deliver the lumber, they rip off the sides, clean it up, and dimension it. That is what was on that cart. Most of it is 1/2 to 3/4. Some was junk, but some wasn't. I figure a trip a week to that place will become my future practice. I have a truck, so I can fill er up. Can't wait.

I heard you say there is no reason to ask for permission at some locations. However, when you found a pile of wood that you wanted you only picked up wood that you ask permission for first. I love the way you recycle and repurpose wood about to go in a landfill. Excellent video and process. Thank you for sharing.

I live in a rural area and the largest town nearby is only about 11,000 people. The businesses mostly all seem to already have a recycling arrangement with someone and that makes it hard to find available pallets. But, I have had good luck with finding people that have an old, unused shed or some such building that is made with primarily old saw mill White & Red Oak from which we make some kind of deal for me to take the boards. One lady wanted 2 end tables made. She said that her Grandmother had this 2 horse stall built many years ago but it wasn't being used any more and was in rough shape and that she would like something made from the boards to remind her of her Grandmother. So...I made 2 end tables for her for free in exchange for all of the boards from the horse stall. And that old Oak has some beautiful, tight grain...a real treat and fun to work with. Maybe I'll take another look around town for some good hardwood pallets...may get lucky..!!

It would be great to see you make the melamine drawers and units. Too many of the woodworking channels turn their nose up as melamine and MDF. But, its the ideal materials for alot of built-in furniture.

Hardwood flooring dealer has been the best option for pallet wood for me I have found purple heart and bloodwood and all kinds of hardwood from all over the world.

I have been using pallet wood for 10+ years for making furniture, as I am a machinist I get the bonus of being able to pick the best pallets and stickers in the shop to bring home and it saves a ton of money because even the pine pieces I bring home can be milled and used in framework and interior pieces or as scrap to drill into etc. Any sheet metal shop/stamping company will have huge amounts of pallets in the long variety and while the short pieces are usually pine the long pieces are almost 100% of the time oak with a rare showing of cherry or maple or ash. My woodworker's bench I made from oak pallet wood for the legs and the top is solid 3-inch thick laminated maple I picked up at a local sawmill, the bench weighs around 300lbs and can hold well over 1 ton in weight on it without moving.
As noted, pick up your scrap when pallet hunting, if you don't clean up after yourself you can cost everyone the privilege of being able to obtain free lumber. Our company no longer allows random people to take pallets because of the mess they leave.

Great video, I and others learned a lot, hope there isn't a huge run on pallets now. Really great having you back, your intro should be your view out that window.
I do a fair amount of motor freight shipping so I use a good number of pallets which I have to buy (or occasionally custom build). Now and again I catch people trying to take my pallets. Recently, I caught one guy in the act who had loaded a stack of (obviously brand new) hardwood pallets on his truck. When confronted, he insisted the "owner" had given him permission to take them. Not likely since I'm the "owner" and I don't have any employees. Fortunately for me (and for him), he had not broken them up. I made him unload and re-stack all of the pallets. I took a pic of him and his truck and license plate and told him if I saw him on my property again, I was calling the police. I have not seen him back, but on occasion my security cameras have recorded other pallet thieves. Moral of this: ask for permission before taking. Unlike my pallet thieves, Matt gets permission before taking pallets.

Something worth mentioning, if you tear down pallets on site make sure you take it all with you and dispose of the trash, I've been to places where someone gets halfway through a pallets, doesn't like it for whatever reason and leaves a mess of broken wood and bent nails. That's disrespectful to the owner and makes things harder on fellow hunters.

There's something meditative for me in pulling old nails out of reclaimed lumber. I worked a job where I managed a companies recyclables programs. They had a lot of crates and pallets. When work was slow, they ask me to break them down, keep what I want and recycle the rest. I would spend hours deconstructing pallets and crates. The nails were put in with the steel and the wood went to a company that they paid to take it. The company would turn the wood into various types of pet bedding and colored bagged mulch.

Would love to see you do a video on how you dismantle those pallets I use a lot of pallet wood myself and am I have tech I also have a good bit of those large timbers from pallets at the supply house and they were a bear to get apart but well worth it
Pretty sure most of what I have is oak and maybe some soft maple not really sure about the soft maple tho if you could do a segment on identifying different species in its rough state as in those pallet pieces that would be awesome

Great video, Matt! Colleague of mine son in law gave me a piece of wood from the pallets they got rebar on for building highrises- blew my mind! The stuff was an exotic hardwood turned like butter on the lathe, made beautiful projects of all sorts - sad part, they normally just burned it on the job site as trash dunnage😪. Now their supplier uses osb and I can't get a stick of that wood! Matt, if you can roll out the shelving and door videos at some point we would be grateful!

I’m seconding that vote. I learned one great trick a few years back: drill a hole in a block of hardwood and slot the nail in there-holds it straight for the first few blows which is usually enough. I can only imagine how many more tricks you have, Matt. If you have time, that’d be a super helpful video.

Great video and cant wait to see the door. I would like to see more on getting pallets apart and something on what the different types of wood are and how to identify what wood is what. I new to this and sometimes Im not sure what wood is what.

Lean the long side on the tailgate of the truck, with the crosspieces underneath. Then whack the crosspieces with a big hammer.
It's easier than trying to hold the pallet with one hand and bash with the other.
The Air locker ap700 professional Punch Nailer/Nail Remover really speeds up de-nailing lumber.

I used to have a connection at a guitar manufacturer. I got tons of 5/4 hard Maple. 2 inch ash. 2 inch basswood. Anything that had a defect they would throw away the whole piece. Most was 12 inches wide by 12 or 14 feet long. I wish I could still get it.

I for one, would love to see your video(s) on building melamine cabinets and drawers. After a lot of trial and error, I recently built a nice melamine cabinet with drawers, for my shop (my first ever melamine project). It turned out great and I really like the clean look, but there is not much out there showing a detailed (melamine) build process, and no one I know could help me with the basic info. I used pocket holes for the drawers (w/slotted bottom panels) and the pocket holes are all hidden between the front face panels...no fasteners show, and the drawers open to both sides of the cabinet. Learning the correct combination of how to clamp everything securely, which clamps to use (and not to use), the proper depth to drill and the correct length of screws, (and then getting those screws to penetrate the hard shell melamine coating) etc, was a real learning experience! I found a few different ways to blow out the chip board or crack the melamine on my test pieces and normal practices did not seem to apply, but once I discovered what worked nicely (for me) it was easy sailing, and they all turned out great! Lol, I probably did things the hard way because I didn't even want to use brad nails during assembly (because they'd be visible), but I'm betting you probably have an easier and better way...so I really look forward to seeing your take on this, please. A sharp, wide chisel and 320 grit paper to trim and sand the edges of the iron on edging worked best for me, but the edging was easy I thought, it just took time. Thanks for all your videos, I really enjoy them, and I've learned a lot from you!
I used duct tape as a hinge and taped 2 pieces of cardboard together. Found a door sale and now I have doors. Just have too find time. Great job PS soaping the nail makes it easy to pull out.
Nice video, well done... I do a pallet run once in a while, gotta love free wood and always clean up your mess before leaving! As for the folks that leave the channel, awell... They have to understand that uprooting everything and moving to a new area and home is no small task, let alone setting up a shop to do videos in... Don't sweat it brother, If they can't wait for a while until you get it all sorted out, their loss not yours!

This is the first scavenger hunt I've seen you do. Still reorganizing my shop and prepping for our kitchen remodel.
My Son and I have been talking about making Adirondack chairs and tables out of pallet wood.
Living in SW Florida there are a lot of patios and pool decks. I've seen people take ALL of the pallets, and then complain about the quality of their find.
Another part of the discussion was rust embedded in the wood. My answer was to drill a hole, plug with a dowel, and let the thickness planer level it out.
Glossy enamel paint will do the rest.

It's my full intent to show the whole process Rich... in a perfect world it would be in a single comprehensive video but in reality it will be more of a disconnected series as I work through the process in between payin' jobs. I believe I'll do the 'denailing' video I filmed so there's not a missing link in the chain you're (sort of) asking for. I worked for a few years at a custom welding shop, and steel supplier. The sheet products (up to 5' wide by 10' long) almost always came on hardwood pallets, and they usually had large piles of them just laying around outside. Check with your local steel suppliers and see what they have. You might be surprised, and they might want to get rid of some of them. All these same pallets also come lined with large sheets of nice cardboard to pad the expensive sheet material, and they work great for covering the floor when painting or varnishing, etc. You have to specially ask for the cardboard but they usually have it piled up inside somewhere, and will gladly give you some if you ask.
Channellock makes a deck dismantling tool that takes most of the work out of knocking down pallets and doesn't dameage them like a hammer. Home depot has them online for around $90 incl shipping. Best money I've spent on tools in a while.
Used to know a guy who got rebuilt machinery in from the Philippines. Crated in mahogany. He made some awesome furniture from it.

Like with Brian Jordison, would love to see how you process the pallet wood and see your door build.. Most of the pallets we get access to here is pine and a very cheap pine at that.. Would live to get my hands on some hardwood pallets - would salivate all over it, if I could :-)

Matt: For starters, congratulation on your new shop! I truly hope this endeavors pans out for you. As usual, an excellent video. I'd give anatomy to get pallets of that grade down here in the deep south (NE FL). Pickin's are uber slim in big box wood, or repurpose wood in my neck-o-the-woods. Yes sir - I'd like to see a video on the melamine cabinets, drawers, and tips for clean milling. I am one of those who like to pick through pallet piles and make "rustic" stuff for my kids and neighbors, and even though it isn't your personal preference (as alluded to early on in the video), I cannot wait to see what you do with this wood, and how you prep it, mill it, etc with relatively common DIY shop tools. Again, congrats on your new digs. I hope this move was worth the toil, effort, sentiment and all else for your and "Mrs NLC" (that cracked me up). Now, time to go get my thumbs Thor. Oh - and would love to see that pallet wood door come together. Man that has to be tough balancing a major move, keeping the wife-unit happy, making a living. I doff my hat to you sir! Hey Dan, thanks for a great comment... the new digs have been 15+ years on the wish list so it's a bit daunting to actually experience it... it's all good though. I hope and expect to cover the topics you ask about in the months ahead. With each new video the production process becomes less drudgery and more fun so I hope to be a bit more prolific. Pallet de-nailing is next, followed by un-crating of the sweet new Gyro Air G700 Dust Processor for the shop so I hope you're able to 'stay tuned' as they roll out. Matt, very informative video. I wish I could find pallets made of cherry, around here they are all junk pine/fur. Super slick trick of cutting the nail short will have to try to remember that one.

I might buy a 2x at a box store, but that's about it. Everything else comes from a local lumber yard I know has a great level of respect for their customers and nobody gets to dig around without the owners permission. I happen to be one of the exceptions.

Hi Matt, great video! Like other folks have commented, I'd also love to see how you build melamine drawers and that sort of thing. I've built a fair amount of euro-style cabinets (for a homeowner that is :) but it sure did take me a heck of a long time. I'd love to see how you do it and maybe learn how to pick up my productivity a little :) I've also got garage drawers/storage on the todo list so I'd be very keen for any episodes on that sort of thing where maybe utility and quick build outweighs high aesthetics, or whatever you think makes best sense for that sort of application :)

I've been searching for a good DIY video on making a flip-top work table. Even found one w/ a neat feature of sliding out. From the videos I've seen on your channel I feel that if you were to make one for yourself it would without a doubt be a solid & sturdy piece of work and would probably be the video that inspires me to start the project myself. It would be awesome to see your take on building a simple solid shop stool that is safe for people of all ages can use. More bad dad jokes please. I'm new to woodworking or making stuff w/ wood. I'm a film grad and just want to say your videos are good, but what you make and how you present them in the videos is inspiring. Thanks for making it look easy.
Thanks for your comment Jud... I'd love to be able to feature a flip top work table build but don't see it in the cards. My main work table is a very sturdy side table on my tablesaw... it's what I use so that anything in the shop that can be made multi-purpose, is. Makes for efficient use of space and efficient workflow. I actually shot video of building my favorite, VERY sturdy shop stool but never produced the video. To make the stool compact, sturdy and light weight it's made of thin gauge metal so the video would be a welding project, not a woodworking one. Since you're a 'film grad' I really appreciate your comments on video production on videos here. Working with video is something I struggle with but manage to get by with steady effort and a goal towards consistent improvement. Sorry I can't be more accommodating with this reply but appreciate your viewing and commenting with hopes you'll continue to find inspiration with other videos, old and new. Best, Matt

NLC< thx for the link to this! i just watched it and wtf??? cherry! wow. im just so blown away by that! i had no idea u cld get that type of HW from pallets. i've scored on 2 pallets before and they were from my deck build last spring from materials being delivered on them. . theyre still sitting next to my garage still. but theyre not cherry, ash or oak!! damnit i feel robbed. but really, great vid! i thoroughly enjoyed it! u are the walter white of woodworking i decided!! i dont know why but it came to me while watching this vid! like a shaman on peyote. again thx sir!

Best bet for hard wood is heavy equipment dealers, their parts come in on strange shaped but very thick and strong. The normal pallet wood people don't like them because they are not standard and don't easily make pinterest crafts.
