    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Před rokem +1

      Thansk. I think the pairing was because of the wet weather and possibility of the 88s not managing the heavy loads on Shap or Beattock. Can't have been a handy 66 ready.

    Amazing number joining Avanti WC trains! But when I used the 0940 hours ex Glasgow to London last Sep on my trip from Australia, I reckon close to 1000 passengers used it as many only travelled for half an hour or an hour. Who says no one uses UK National Rail?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Před rokem

      Only with DRS but usually that's when the bi mode class 88s are running their diesel engines. On that day it was so wet that the anti slip would have seen them reduced to a crawl on Shap or Beattock banks. The usual alternative is to replace the class 88 with a class 66.

This day they have used a diesel only version of the same type of loco so a bit unusual. From years ago I have seen photos of steam and electric together which always looked odd to me. I found out recently it was because the trans had steam heating and electric locomotives had no heating boiler.

    Never understood why & hope someone can explain why quite a lot of West Coast freight that isn't hauled by a single 66 has 2 90's doing the work. At best a single 66 is good for about2-3000hp ish (Wiki) but a single 90 (acording to the internet again) is about 5000. If a single 66 can do the job then why not a single 90? You never see tandem 66's?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Před 10 měsíci

      You do see the occasional pair of 66s but not often. My understanding is that the 90s are old now and unreliable hence running in pairs. I did catch one running alone. DB have withdrawn all their ⁹s and freightliner aren't using as many of theirs .

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Před rokem

      Long gripe from many. Given the restrictions on weed killing I can't see much actually being done. A weedkilling train was due over the Newcastle line last week but was cancelled on both occasions. I doubt that would have covered the station area.
