Hi, I'm Les Gilpin.
I'm a lifelong railway enthusiast now based in Carlisle and a railway historian. I'm spending more and more time recording videos in Carlisle and on the lines radiating from there. Diesel, Electric or Steam - if it looks good I'll record it!
I'm also a keen railway modeller. I'm currently modelling Canadian and US railroads freelance in 1:160 n scale: a new version of my Canuck Union lines. You'll find videos of some of the smaller model railway exhibitions I've attended and occasionally of my own layout.
My railway history interests are mostly the railways of Cumbria (UK) for which I've written 4 books. I'm also interested in the history of railways in Canada and the USA including for some of the more obscure places I've visited. I record hours of video for CZcams when I go,

The Beautiful Midland Pullman visits Carlisle.
The Settle to Carlisle and Coastal Pullman.
Plus some passing freight trains.
12 June 24
On Wednesday 12th June Locomotive services' Midland Pullman was used to form the Settle to Carlisle and Coastal Pullman. The passengers from Gerrards Cross and the Chilterns had the opportunity to travel over not only the Settle & Carlisle Line but also around the Cumbrian Coast line in luxury.
We also see the regualr midday freight trains passing through Carlisle.
Finally at Wigton, we see the Pullman heading on its way to Maryport from where the passengers will see the beauties of the Cumbrian Coast on their way south..

Great footage as always Les. I happened to be fishing on the end of the big pier in Whitehaven so I had a great view of the Midland Pullman snaking it's way around the coast!
Fantastic Video. Well Done.
Nice video, great to understand what stock forms the Jacobite this year!
Great video Les loved it the pullman looks awesome great condition and well looked after thanks for sharing take care a t b syd😃👍
The Blue Pullman is still my favourite train and this HST version looks the part. Always well presented train and staff with their replica uniforms give it that special touch.
In an age when there are some hideous liveries about - especially down south - the Midland Pullman is just perfect. It always films well.
Such a beautiful train The Midland Pulman . That Colas 70 must have some power to pull those logs up Blae Moor. Thank you
It certainly is. The 70s are very powerful beasts.
Lovely video, Leslie.

Indeed
Just ONE wagon load of those logs would keep my wood burner fuelled up for the rest of my life....! The Blue Pullman looks fantastic. Long it may continue. I'll book a ride on it when I retire. That front bogie wasn't very far away from the P4's edge.....
Yes 20-21 wagons all going into board for constrution! I'd like to be able to afford the Pullman too!
Fantastic Video. Well Done.
Thank you very much!
TANGMERE's wheel slip at 8:50 was probably caused by the drenched condition of the railhead after all that steam had condensed on it. It has been a while sincce you caught a Northern service arriving into platform 2. Some weeks ago I wondered why terminating excursions used P3. I think the answer was staring me in the face. 3:40 (±) shows a whole train load of passengers on the platform. It has to be that the width of the platform is capable of accommodating them, which P1 couldn't. Well, that was a day when the weather changed quickly. I got caught out by it as well. I had hung out the newly done laundry and went shopping. The sun was shining when I left, but not when I got back.
P3 is popular for the charters, partly because the punters can stay dry plus any other non passenger trains can run past. Arrivals on 1 or 4 seem to happen when 3 is otherwise occupied. It poured down that evening.
When the driver of 6E41 saluted you (4:20) I noticed that the image stayed rock steady. Either you have nerves of steel or the camera was tripod mounted.
I was expecting a tone! No tripod! You would notice if it was unexpected!
Awesome as usual Leslie 👍 Thanks for sharing Andy
Glad you enjoyed it
Well done for keeping up with the wildlife Leslie
It gives me something to look at during the quiet moments.

nice video Les great steam action ,yes a shame you don't get a it longer in Carlisle to have a good look around thanks for sharing Les take care a t b Syd👍
The locos are very popular for the passengers so there's always a queue
It's nice to see steam but I also wish they would send a Black 5 out as well. What a long journey this was 17 hours for a short time in Carlisle.
The journeys are getting longer these days. One of Riley's B5s needs to be on a more permanent loan to WCR. Or one of the locos seemingly permanently down south retrieved
Some really classy stock there Leslie. Nice. I hope nothing happens to the little feller. All the best.
Thanks Tim. Not often I pay much attention to the stock

Hi Les, I was on the Belmond Pullman on Saturday and it was a very long day 17hrs, no time to look round Carlisle.
Its a shame really as many visitors get to the station entrance, see the Citadel and turn around. They don't realise that the Cathedral - a real gem - and Castle are not too far away.
More interesting Loco's at Carlisle. It is now a mecca if you want to see live steam, the more the better.
It certainly is. What we though is West Coast to find a regular alternative to Tangmere. Things are almost back to the frequencies of 2021
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I agree, any stem loco is better than none, but Tangmere is getting all the action this year. I would like to see a Duchess back in live steam for a change.
So, Les ....... what is CDL?
Central Door Locking - has ben a big issue with West Coast Railways
Great footage of Tangmere, and a wonderful variety as ever Les!
Many thanks!
Loved hearing the chiffchaff while the rhtt went by.
Ah that was what it was!
I expect the gull sees the train as a predator and is trying to drive it off. It succeeded see! 😁
It can try!
Every generation thinks the seats in new trains are worse than what's gone before! 😁 But they gave sterling service in Mk 3 stock right up to the 2000s.
Indeed but I can remember when Mk2 setats were seen as less comfortable than in the earlier Mk2s and then the late Mk2 seats with bright orange and bright green covers.
Another great video Les, tangmere off beat, sounded nice when towed backwards 🤣cheers Steve . 🌝
I was told yesterday it was missing a beat and clunking when it went for servicing. I'll have to listen to other videos from 15th
Congratulations and well done on your 500th video Les
Thanks!
On the face of it, Les, it was either an early breakfast or no breakfast and sustenance later from a local eatery for you. So, WCR are having to do what they ought to have done long ago. Their procrastination cost them dearly. Oddly enough it had strange time-keeping for the remainder of the journey - 30 min EARLY at Helensburgh Upper, on-time at Crianlarich and finally 15 min LATE at Fort William. At 6:23 another gull appears from the weeds on No 1 Road and flies off. At 6:55 you catured a gull going back to near that weed patch. Another nesting gull not spotted before? As for chicks. It is hardly a threatened species. One less to crap on people or cars is one better.
Thanks. The gulls are a bother even when they restricted their activities to the station wall
Herring gulls apparently are, according to the bird experts. That's why they're seen inland so much now, because there's no longer plenty of fish in the sea. There was a piece about it on Springwatch just this week
Becoming a must watch video every week now! Superb mate.x
Thanks. I'm glad you are enjoying them
Great video. Was the 47 helping a bit at the end when Tangmere was heading out of Carlisle
Unless the driver requested assistance I doubt it. The rear loco usually runs without the buffers touching.

The thunderbird does move. in fact at the station this morning it was nowhere to be seen
Hi Les. I see you got a name check by Richard Bowker on Green Signals today, relating to Jacobite Stock. He said you're the "guru" when it comes to movements at Carlisle. You'll be needing an agent next! Keep up the excellent work, sir.
Yes I had a laugh at that! Didn't get a mug tho lol! Thanks
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I've got one! I won the quiz a few weeks ago.

@LeslieGilpinRailways It sounded like he was very impressed by your knowledge! I got the anniversary of the completion of WCML (or was it ECML?) electrification right to get mine. Did you get the longest platform question right? I went for Gloucester. Do you know the answer to this week's question? I think I do & sent it by email. Shame I can't win twice!
@@stephendavies6949 yes I got it straight away, ironic quote given the same person invited bombers to drop bombs on Slough!
That pair of 769's again. I found the Freedom of Information article where Scotrail back in January said they don't currently have any plans to use them. While that statement might have been true 6 months ago things can change. Scotrail or rather Transport Scotland haven't placed an order for any new rolling stock for either EK or Barrhead lines which will both be fully electrified come next December. Also the new Leven branch (that I experienced last weekend) is "electric ready". Funnily enough that line had 8 cancellations last Sunday - great way to encourage the people to use the new line!
Thanks Euan. I suspect you are correct. Apparently the pair of 769s have been running on the Sou Western to Annan this week. Doesnt surprise me when the TOCs can't run new services through lack of stock - anything that may have been useful seems to have been stored or scrapped!
Hi Les. Is ScotRail really going to be lumbered with 769s?
Absolutely no idea. ScotRail have said no - but why would Brodies / Porterbrook refurb them mechanically and paint them blue?
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Yep, exactly what I thought...
