Why do you think Cillian Murphy stands with his hands in his pockets in front of Prince Harry of the United Kingdom?
There is a historical event underlying Murphy's spiteful gaze.
In 1920, during Ireland's war of independence, the order was given in Cork City that "Men with their hands in their pockets will be shot." That's why the Irish don't like the British royal family. In this shot, Irish rugby player Ronan O'Gara showed the same attitude to the Queen and caused a crisis. This is how the Irish protest in a simple but very effective way in their encounters or dialogues with members of the Royal family.

Like every other country these times, the difference was that the british were just more powerful than the others.
Oscar Wilde once said; “The problem is the English can’t remember history, while the Irish can’t forget it.”

While in London on vacation in the late ‘90’s I had the pleasure of meeting Irish band The Cranberries’ lead singer Delores O’Reardon. I didn’t have anything for her to autograph on me so I handed her a 5 pound note, turned it face-down so she could sign it. She replied, “oh darling, I’m Irish” as she turned it face-up and signed her name over the queen’s face. They certainly never forget.
Loving it!

As an Irishman myself, I'd like to give some perspective on this. In no way was Cillian being disrespectful to Harry as a person. As you can see, he was cordial and made polite conversation. It's what he represents is what Cillian was protesting. And by the way, it was a quiet and personal protest at that. We are not a nation to hold a grudge to the point of hurting our relationships but we will let you know in our own way that you've crossed a line and we've an eye on you!
“And that’s why the Irish don’t like the royal family”

Anti British propaganda there. It was a potato disease and famine, was the plague also the British fault? Why do the Irish love the Catholic Church? The British voted in parliament to spend billions in todays money in aid to help the Irish during the famine whereas the Catholic Church did nothing.
It was more of a genocide than a famine, Ireland had plenty of food, problem is, it was all sent out of Ireland. The only thing left for the Irish to eat was potatoes and the blight killed off most of the crops. Like I said if they wanted to destroy Ireland the country would be rubble.
There is a lot of evidence to indicate that the Irish famine wasn’t about poorly performing crops but instead related to laws passed banning Irish from owning any substantive property and then forcefully evicting Irish from their homesteads before winter.
There were a variety of contributing factors but to sum it up the main three were several poor seasons of crops with the blite affecting the potatoes, Irish farmers having their land taken and forced into expensive contracts to essentially rent the land and they were unable to afford the ridiculous costs and finally the probably most damaging was that the English essentially took the crops they needed before allowing them to have any which resulted in lack of food, food becoming extremely expensive and them not having money for any other food or supplies.
There was plenty of food! It was exported under armed guard.Queen Victoria is known to have blocked aid from the ottoman empire. It was an attempted genocide. Unfortunately our neighbours are so ignorant about it they continue to joke about potatoes 🙄

There was no mass movement to genocide the Irish contrary to what people for some reason believe today. I’m speaking as a Half Irish Glaswegian btw. Why would there be? By the 1800s Ireland was English speaking, apart of the UK and a substantial source of Britains power and wealth (40% of the British military was made up of Irishman more than there were English). Fact is the Irish famine occurred because of the blight, the same blight that had wreaked havoc in all lands where potatoes grown. The thing with Ireland is that potatoes were grown pretty much exclusively as a cash crop. Where as in most of Europe, it was grown alongside other crops for consumption. The blight was most destructive in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands, two places with similar land laws. One of them being Lowland Scot’s owning land in the Highlands, and allowing Highlanders to live on the land provided they could pay (which they did in the form of potatoes), and in Ireland where it was Anglo-Irish land owners who let Irish people live on the land they owned provided they paid (which they did with potatoes).
When the blight happened the Irish and the Highlanders could no longer pay to live on the land with potatoes so the choice was to sell the food crops (and starve), or be evicted. A million died of starvation in Ireland, 4-5 million left on British boats that were headed to the Americas, Australia, mainland Europe or Great Britain, mostly to places like Glasgow, Liverpool and London.
And before you say “well the Brits didn’t help by exporting food out of Ireland”, yeah nah we didn’t help because we didn’t do that. Most of the crops and food went to buyers in Dublin, who would have also had markets in Great Britain
The Irish famine was a famine, not some weird ploy to kill off the Irish for whatever reason. If Britain really wanted to kill off the Irish, surely they would have just done what they had been doing previously, wouldn’t that make more sense?
That family needs to work and stop the bs. Period.

Tbh I just thought Cillian looked comfy considering he was stood with his hands in his pockets and kept his left in his pocket while shaking Harry’s hand. Didn’t know about the Irish standing with their hands in their pockets until now.
My guess is, that’s exactly what happened. He shook his hand, and he was smiling. Does cillian Murphy normally stand with his hand in his pockets?
CZcamsrs Try to make a big deal about every single thing in the world and they back it up by hellA reaching 4 the sake of their argument and narrative. He looks like he's comfy standing that way. No hidden agenda behind standing like that. But they find some sort of picture, video, ot article. And they run with it.
Putting hands in pockets while standing infeont of a supervisor or royals is considered quite rude or we just didnt respect them.
I’m not Irish but I’ll always have respect for someone who stands for something.
The Irish probably won't even be Irish anymore with all the immigration going on. They'll eventually be the minority in their own country. But then again it won't be their country anymore
Absolutely 💯
like how the Irish is standing aside with the pa//le//sti//nia//n cause. they stand for humanity and justice.

Murphy was Shelby for a moment there💀
Way to be true to your people and self. No form of protest is more effective than silent insolence, which is why in the military it was once punishable by courts martial.
To be fair, he is standing behind his morals and his family history.
If he hates the royal family, that's one thing. If he hates the British then he shouldn't have taken acting work meant for British people and hand his passport back.
I can respect it... But I must say, when black people do it in any form or fashion.. there's less empathy and honor value for them🤔
Then why show up??? I hate hitler but I’ll still show up to shake hands and get my metal hahaha
Or he's just another hypocritical narcissist like 99% of the acting fraternity that jump on the bandwagon of historical and cultural disagreement when it suits them, but would sell their grandma for a bit of exposure! If you disagree with another culture that vehemently, then grow a pair and don't be there! 🤷
Nah he still shook his hand. Total coward move.
Cillians actually saying to Prince Harry "Sorry about my hands in my pockets but Ive gotta do the thing" and Prince Harrys like "Oh yeah man, you gotta do the thing".
EXACTLY..Also Harry doesn't give a rats arse about it all.
Wait... so both of them were aware of this historical beef and even acknowledged it themselves? Then who is Cillian protesting to, if neither of them identifies themselves as what they are representing?? Was the pocket hand directed to the 'idea' of the British royalty? Then is it like two immaterial ghosts interacting? I'm so confused lol
Sorry if I sounded rude, I'm not of this culture and it's kinda a shock.

Yes, stand for something, fall for nothing.
Quick question, why did they shoot anyone with their hand in their pocket?
Irish defiance is legendary. Hopefully that trait endures through the ages forever.
Yes! ❤
Yeah at how they can continue to suck and lose for 900 years.

Wait til you hear about what Americans did.
Cillian Murphy looks like a child next to prince harry.
According to Ronan O'Gara: "My hands were sweaty. I had my hands in [my pockets]. I was cleaning my hands from sweat to make sure there wasn't a layer of sweat before I shook her hand."
Was going to say the same thing...
It caused a crisis apparently lol

"SILIAN MURPHY"
It’s like crossing your arms in the military. It’s subtle but a sign of challenging the one before you.
1) It’s not “Sillian”, it’s “Killian”
2) Here’s to Cillian for respecting Irish tradition and disrespecting the British crown. As the Brits have done to the Irish for many hundreds of years.

Some people haven’t quite figured it out that you are born into royalty its not a choice. There are very few people on the planet that would turn down the choice to be royalty and rich given the chance. These people are groomed from the moment they appear to live a life they didnt get a say in. The petty jealousy of celebrities makes them look pathetic.
