Saving money and old filament !
That splicer is neat. I just use the filament runout sensors to be able to just feed more filament in without messing up a print. Works well but this would be nice to not have to keep running to the printer to switch out rolls! Could make your own multi-color filament roll too :)
The time loss and each change seems to create small screw up issues with the print, so just making a big roll and leaving the machine running is a blessing. My client runs can be 12 to 17 hrs and this way I'm not trying to patch up after having the "run out" stop the machine etc. Also LOVE that crazy idea about mixing colors LOLOL...
why not splice a small piece of red with a small piece of green to see the splice itself

Have you tried this type of splicer? Also on Amazon and cheap "IdeaFormer Filament Welder Connector,Filament Joiner,Connecting Broken 3D Printer Filament,Filament Sensor,3D Printer Tool for Most Kind of 1.75mm Filament,3D Printer Accessories(Black) (Silver)". I bought one a few years ago, never used due to changes in what I make.
tried the cheap one and sent it back. Didn't work, but I seem to have a bad track record 🤠
Is there an STL for the spool holder?
Thingiverse has those, but they are not great unless you tie them down.
